Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
I'm playing the SpaceChem demo and it's fantastic so far. I hate chemistry, but damn is this game good. It's really great at making you feel smart, and the histograms at the end of each puzzle are awesome, since they show how your solution compared to everyone else's. It's definitely going to be worth the $2.50.
That's funny because I felt like the game was really good at making me feel stupid...:dunce:
My husband really enjoyed listening to me chanting "Gonna die, gonna die, gonna die die die" to the tune of Camptown Races while playing Jamestown.
Maybe you mean the William Tell Overture? I'm not sure how the phrasing fits with Camptown Races

This sale is nuts... This is the first time I have ever bought anything off of steam (mostly because I got tired of the client that kept on crashing or messing up my system).

Saved some good $$$ on these sales.

Finally got around to doing the Sanctum achievement, got the game in a bundle and hadn't tried it. Took about an hour to get enough presents, just played the first map on easy.

In doing this, I discovered that SANCTUM IS AWESOME.

You're right, I think. I'm not much into music, but I think that William Tell thing sounds about right.

Yes it is

Even though I have two extra copies part of that cushioned by knowing it's an awesome game lol

Likewise, I started Sanctum for the achievement, and I ended up playing the entirety of the first level, keeping me up well past when I wanted to turn in for the night. Really enjoyed it and looking forward to playing more.
So what daily deals did everyone pass on that they hope are recaps?
Hoping Fable comes back up so I can get the lost chapters for $2.50 I stupidly forgot it was on sale too and missed it the first day.
Magic the gathering worth it for $3.99? Or should I get the bundle?
From what I can tell, all the bundle really includes are alternative images of the cards; nothing more. Plus, it unlocks all the decks in the game, which sort of defeats the purpose of the game overall (as you defeat stronger opponents to unlock their deck so you can use it yourself).

Though I could be totally wrong about this as I do not own the game, but have heard similar things in the 2011 version.

You may want to grab the expansion, as that may be the only thing that adds content worth paying for to the game. I'm not sure about the Deck Pack 1 + 2, though, as the description mentions "new decks," but I'm not sure if they're also unlockable like the other decks (I'm guessing it isn't).
Mass Effect 1 and 2.
Mass Effect 2 is still on sale at Amazon for $4.99. I believe it may activate through Origin as well (don't hate me if I'm wrong). Not sure about Steam.

Note that it's the standard edition, I think, and not the deluxe whatevertheheck edition.
Amazon price matched it, and it also registers on Origin, but I had to use this link to register it, since it was giving me an error in Origin itself.
Cool. Wonder if mine registers on Origin. I don't have many EA games. Does Origin still do that spyware or whatever people got pissed off about?
So what daily deals did everyone pass on that they hope are recaps?
Portal 2. I was certain that it would be a recap deal (a little less certain now that they didn't have a midweek recap) and it seemed as if games were being won left and right, so I thought I'd save a little money. Other than that, I picked up everything else I wanted that fell into my price range.
So what daily deals did everyone pass on that they hope are recaps?
missed both Payday the Heist and Limbo when they had a daily deal hoping they comeback on the final day of the sale

Oh my god, this exactly. I had never gotten around to it before. I had to play a few times to get all 10 presents, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

I have a 50% Droplitz Coupon 50% Oblivion GOTY and 50% Fallout NV coupon I want to give away. if anyone wants them just PM me. All blue.

Edit: And this sale is what I love about games/Steam. This is why I buy games I knew I didn't have the time to play and only buy PC games on steam. Gives me a fun opportunity to try games I wouldn't otherwise and get rewarded for doing so!

Thanks for the info. I was actually just wondering about all of that. I think I'm finally going to bite on something from this sale. Been resisting like crazy but I don't think I can anymore!

+1 on Sanctum as well. Much more fun than I'd expected.

I created a category in my library for the Holiday 2011 games (I usually don't do categories because of the resets), and I've been pleasantly surprised by quite a few of them (Atom Zombie Smasher, Dungeons of Dredmor) and had my above-average expectations met by Renegade Ops and Rock of Ages.

Probably the only game I regretted not buying is Avadon. Otherwise, I'm fine with what I passed on.

So, when are they changing SMB's achievement? Or was that someone's wishful thinking?
Cool. Wonder if mine registers on Origin. I don't have many EA games. Does Origin still do that spyware or whatever people got pissed off about?
It should. Origin never had spyware; people were just pissed off about the EULA, since it allows EA to gather information about your computer for marketing purposes.

EA revised the EULA, but it still gives them the right to access some of your information for marketing purposes. It's not desirable, but EA isn't the only one doing something like this.

This is what it says:

"You agree that EA may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer (including the Internet Protocol Address), operating system, Application usage (including but not limited to successful installation and/or removal), software, software usage and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online services. EA may also use this information combined with personal information for marketing purposes and to improve our products and services. We may also share that data with our third party service providers in a form that does not personally identify you."

I passed on Portal 2 when it hit a daily, because I was sure that I would win it. Then as the coal started to pile up I hit the forums looking for someone who was looking to trade a copy of it. I lucked out, found someone who was willing to trade it for a $5 game on their wishlist. So, I actually saved $2.50. If you search the steam trading forums and the ones here you might get lucky.

One of the devs tweeted about sending an email to Valve. So if it does, probably tommorow around regular update time.
Mass Effect 1 and 2.
If you want them on Steam they'll appear again in a few months. I think they've been part of the Valentine's Day sale in the past and there's usually an EA week every quarter or so.

Thanks. I don't like the sound of that, I'll continue avoiding Origin.
I enjoyed Old World Blues and Honest Hearts the most. Old World Blues had me laughing during nearly all the character interactions and there seemed to be lots to do. Honest Hearts didn't get very good reviews, but I found it short and sweet. Beautiful setting.

Lonesome Road was incredibly linear, had minimal character interaction and the antagonist would not shut the fuck up and get to the point. I can't put my finger on what was wrong with Dead Money, but I didn't like it that much.

Both Lonesome Road/Dead Money had drab and uninteresting settings.

I would vouch for all of the Fallout New Vegas DLC, sure Old World Blues was the most interesting (albeit also by far the oddest piece of DLC in both 3 & NV) however, I think they're all worth playing for the following reasons -

In Dead Money, you get introduced to some interesting characters and while the DLC is linear, it adds some interesting twists and basically becomes a 'Heist' mission that you don't see anywhere else in F:NV.

Honest Hearts was ... honestly, a little boring but you do get a brand new setting, tribals, new (old) enemies and you get to meet with a legendary character from the F:NV mythos ... so worth it there.

Old World Blues is good all around, and actually ties in to Dead Money with one of the characters there.

Finally, Lonesome Road has a character that's mentioned vaguely throughout the entire NV game and adds some closure to that plot line.

The great thing about all the DLC is that it ties in so closely to what was established in ether the vanilla game or the other DLC. In Fallout 3, some of the DLC was hit and miss, but only some of it dealt with the main game, others like Point Lookout were amazing but didn't really tie in to the main story.

All of the DLC here either ties into the main story or it builds on prior DLC entries. For any fan of the Fallout franchise, I would recommend all the DLC ... but then again, if you waited until now to buy everything, you probably aren't a huge fan ;)
Thanks for the excellent information! I am going to snab all the DLC because frankly that's as cheap as I'm going to see it for a while, and it's worth the risk for roughly $12.

For the TL;DR version: Level a tower apprentice to level 30 and the achievement is easily soloable.
So I took your advice and leveled an apprentice to 30. I have no trouble getting to the final boss wave solo. However, I don't understand how you solo that final wave with the boss included.

You have 60 seconds to place towers which is rough. I managed to cover all the areas. However, the minions don't stop coming and the boss just comes down with all the minions and takes out my towers and a flood ensues.

If anyone is interested, I still need the friend trading achievement. Add me on Steam: Glomerate. We'll just trade our worst coupons =P

Update: All set, thanks Gutsman!

Sorry to spam posts back-to-back but I can't seem to find an answer after a cursory search of the main thread and Steam:

What's in store for the next two days sales-wise? Is Saturday the last of the daily deals with Sunday being the recap day? When's the last day we can get these winter achievements to count for coal/coupons/games? Thanks in advance.

I just added you to my Steam list. Add me as my same nick here: NeoGutsman

EDIT: My pleasure, Glomerate! Awesome avatar - I liked that cartoon as a kid! :D

You shouldn't be placing your towers to stop the minions in the same spot you place towers to stop the snowman. If you set some towers at the minion spawns and the rest at santa then that should do it.

Of course when I did it I had some level 70 help so the snowman died in roughly 10-12 seconds.

well finally got 7 coal and crafted them into................................50% off GeminiRue coupon, a game which i have no interest in not to mention its already at 50% off

Hmm... to craft my coal or not to craft? Sounds like a lot of people are just getting lame coupons
