Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Problem is Steam is becoming more focused on these gimmicks and less focused on straight up larger percentage discounts.
Yes. At least 50% off everything is such a horrible sale.

Just to clarify, the Steam sale sucks because Amazon has been undercutting them, and the Amazon sales suck because they've just been matching Steam. ;)
Know what a huuuuge highlight of Steam is for me?

I bought Skyrim on Steam for my hubby. We've spent the last hour and a half playing together. That is, I'm logged into his account in offline mode, and he's logged online. And we've been playing Skyrim at the same time.

So. Freaking. Awesome. :applause:
So basically, someone can login in offline mode and play my games while I play them online at the same time? That sounds interesting!

Man no fable on recap day :/ only thing for me is maybe dungeon defenders. Passed on it two times before but this third time is going to be hard.

Think you've stumbled on the wrong forum. It's called Cheap Ass Gamer, is it not?

I never saw Dragon Age during this sale. Really surprised at that.

Also to Terlan, i picked up Capsized for $2.50 (non-sale) and all the Oddworld games are heavily discounted too.

Ha! I knew it! Skyrim would be back. Still not going to buy it though. Too much of a backlog. I AM going to add Orcs Must Die! to it though. I regret not getting that the 1st day.
I never saw Dragon Age during this sale. Really surprised at that.
Check Amazon. It's $12.50 for both right now.

Is any of the Shogun 2 DLC essential? Didn't pick any up the first go around because I was gifted the game after the fact, but I'd like to nab anything important at these prices.

Well f*ck me.
Arkham City is still not available in my region, why am I being left behind just because I live in South America? Whoever came up with this limitation deserves nothing less but a punch in the face.

So you took my advice to play his copy.

I've got to ask though about the Dungeon Defenders DLC. Do they really add enough? I know they are 75% off, but paying for gender swapped heroes is still ridiculous no matter the cost.

Rise of the samurai adds a new campaign and 6 clans(blood pack is supposed to work with this though I have yet to test it myself) . I would say its worth getting. The blood pack is fairly decent and does give the battles a much more enjoyable look (though be warned they went with an art style for the blood not everyone agrees with) The clan packs and extra units are kind of hard to recommend though. But if you like the game they might be worth getting.

Well anyone know any hidden gems for indie games? Looking to see if there are any last sweet deals I should be considering.

Other than at, tried some Puzzle Agent last night. It's weird enough for my tastes, yet very fun. A absolute steal at the $1.25 I paid for it.
I definitely think Valve made a misstep in how they handled the promotion. All coupons or all games would've been fine, but mixing the two kicks in psychology they should've known better to avoid. If people craft a 10% coupon and their friend crafts a DOTA 2 beta invite (yes, this happened to two people I know), then the person with the coupon is going to feel pissed that, for the same time or effort, he got less than someone else. Basic psychology: we don't want to get less than what other people get, or we become unhappy with what we got, no matter what it is.
It's not just that. If the coupons were actually decent deals then I wouldn't necessarily feel quite so bad. For me the real kicker is that you get a coupon that you can't use now and for a lower discount than the games currently are now. Why should I feel good about getting a 33% off a game coupon for use later (when the games are regular price) when I can get that same game for 75% off now. What's the point? It's like hey we have this great sale now but if for some reason you want to wait and pay more for the same game later here's a crappy coupon.

Some people thought they would do an encore day tomorrow and thus the coupons could stack with the discount, but I suspected they would not do such a thing. Basically the coupons are worthless unless you have a sudden change of heart later and decide you want a game you passed on and absolutely cannot wait until the next big sale.
Picked up Bastion and Legends of Fae. Was hoping it'd be discounted further, but that was good enough.
I like Legend of Fae and it hardly ever goes on sale. They really need to do a daily deal out of it some day because it just hasn't gotten enough promotion. It's a good game in the Puzzle Quest vein but far less cliche and with some different, unique elements, like having to work against the element of time. You can't just sit there and take all day trying to decide like you can in PQ.

Well, only game I still want is Portal 2. Looks like it will still be $7.50 tomorrow (until 1) so I can use my coupon (though I think I should farm some more tickets, as 33% off valve ain't the best...lol)

Pretty sure the game will go off sale before the coupons activate. So you might not want to chance it.

Can't you get someone to buy you a gift copy?
Can anyone who has played the original Fallout games recently tell me how they hold up? I only just figured out they're 15 year old games... :p

It's not a matter of 'do they hold up' more so of 'do you like true, old-school, turn-based RPGs?' If you do then Fallouts 1 and 2 are classics. Note they are nothing like Fallout 3 in terms of game play, just thematically.
Mooby has it right. They are classics, on par with Baldur's Gate. You get over the graphics quickly. The interface is a bit clunky in 2011 but the game itself is worth the trouble.

Fallout 3 happened when Bethesda, as big fans of the original games, rented the Fallout license from Interplay to make a new modern RPG. The PC world trembled in fear that they'd screw up the franchise. But the Fallout franchise was otherwise dead, and Bethesda made some of the best RPGs of the past 10 years. Bethesda delivered in spades with Fallout 3.

I like that Fallout 3 has brought some attention to the original games.

I think the big news of this year's Steam sale is the arrival of Amazon as a viable DD retailer. Not just viable, but aggressive!

Pretty much. Has Valve ever not activated something at their usual time (which is noon central time)? I mean this sale started on December 19, but it did not start at 12:01 A:M on Dec 19.

That is not to say you can't wait to test it out because honestly everything is going to be there for hours into tomorrow.

Not bitching so much as I found it funny, but I bought the Frozenbyte Bundle months ago. Last week, I was a little miffed when the first prize I win is Shadowgrounds/Shadowgrounds: Survivor but now I suspect Valve is just trolling me because when I finally crafted my coal, all I received was the Frozenbyte Bundle and a coupon for Frozenbyte games.

Unrelated, has anyone seen a coupon for Simbin stuff? Thats actually a coupon I would like.

Yeah, now that I think about it, the coupon probably goes live "valve time" which would be when they update the deals....dammit.... But on the other hand, they are coupons, which they never offered. Worse comes to worse, I'm sure it'll be a daily/midweek/weekend deal before March.

Just noticed you can win "golden" tickets that are valid now...that'd make it easier..haha
Would I be better off buying UT3 Black for $5 or the Unreal Deal Pack for $10. I already own UT3 for 360 and a disc copy of the original UT for PC.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/13210/
Might be better off buying games that people play.......... No but really it depends on how much you plan on playing those older games. Do you want to play 2k4 or do you want to play 2k4 with better graphics? Annnnnd I'm done making fun of games that Epic makes.

I bought the Unreal Deal Pack awhile ago, but I also wanted to play Unreal and Unreal 2 which are fun games even if Unreal ran 2x faster than it was supposed to. It really depends if you want to play the single player and if not then you will most likely only play one of the online games. Because honestly that is how shooters work. You may own 500 online shooters, but you are bound to only play 1 to 3 and they won't be the 1 to 3 of the same series.

All I hoped for this sale were cheap Indie bundles. 5 games at $1 per game is all I asked for. Most of the Indie games that would've been in the bundle were offered for $2.49 because they had achievements attached to them. Sure, you could get games for doing the achievements, but so many people exploited it that they've run out. Last year, they offered And Yet It Moves, Beat Hazard, Flight Control HD, The Polynomial, and Toki Tori for $1 apiece, and they even offered Recettear for $1.

I agree that they focused more on a gimmick than price discounts. And I really hope they switch back.
Can anyone recommend day of defeat source?
Yes, I am capable of recommending it.

It is essentially a World War 2 class based (not class to the point of TF2, but you have to choose a class) that feels a little like Counter-Strike, but with respawns. It is really fun, fast, and completely action packed and luckily it does still have a community.
What about the Magicka achievement? That one easy?

Thanks
If you do it the normal way (playing through the game) its quite time consuming but not difficult.

Theres a Youtube video on how to do it in about 20-30 minutes though thats even easier.
Holy shit you guys are hard to please.
:applause:
I don't think you understand. Valve owes it to me to put every game on sale for $5 so that I can add them all to my backlog of a hundred games and never play them. I'm pretty sure it says so in the ToS.

Can anyone recommend day of defeat source?
DODS i's a good game with a very small community. If Valve ever wanted to re-enter the "war simulator" genre (CoD, BF#, etc), this would be a very good launching point.

But DODS gets no love from Valve anymore - the only "updates" anymore are tweaks required because they keep tweaking the Source engine for TF2.

Your best bet is to find/join a community that plays regularly. It's great fun with friends. A little heavier than TF2, but still fast and fun.

Thanks, I haven't gotten to play it yet, so I'll hold off. That blood DLC looks kind of goofy though, I checked out a video.

Question: Do we know when the Indie Royale New Year's Bundle is going up? That's my one hesitation, as far as pulling the trigger on a few more indies.

We don't and on top of that, they still need to offer preorders on it. So I am guessing it wont be today or tomorrow, but sometime this week.

I'm kinda bummed that almost all of the encore deals are all the high budget ones. I wanted some of the cheaper deals.

Looks like you're going to have to risk it, either way.
Screw it, buying terreria 4 pack for my son and a couple of our gaming friends.
Good choice sir, Terraria is super addictive I put in close to 200hrs into it and that was before the 1.1v patch which just added a ton of new items and made it feel like a totally new game

I am one of the people who just could not get into Terrarria. It felt like I was forced to play this game for 50+ hours just to grind armor and weapons to kill a boss. Too much of a grindfest for me with nothing for me to get out of it to continue playing.

Not my cup of tea. I can see why others like it and respect that, but it's not my game.

Thanks for the responses about Indie Royale. I've gotten enough free stuff from the Steam Sale that I'm comfortable taking my chances. :)
