Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I want to like Hoard, but as soon as I played an actual competitive level against the CPU, it schooled me. Twice. I feel like somehow from the tutorial to the real thing, there was a massive complexity spike that wasn't properly explained.

Play the co-op maps with friends. I find it a lot more fun. That's where 75% of my time with it was spent.
Anybody ever played Blood Good Time? Not discounted much, but looks fun.
Great game concept its a lot of fun, but be prepared to play with bots until they do a free weekend/another sale (which isn't that bad, and kind of fun tbh). Tried last week on 3 different days at various times to see if anyone was playing, and it was completely dead--I was the only one on any of the 4 official BGT servers (which are the only servers left).

In case you're wondering about the game itself, you receive a target to kill, while also being the target of someone else. There are weapons scattered across the map, and each weapon receives stars, you receive more points killing your target with a high starred weapon. Weapon star ratings cycle every so often making the gameplay pretty dynamic, and map traps that you activate also give high points. There's also auxiliary items, such as a hologram, but most of them don't affect score. One of the more interesting aspects is that you have 3 meters that slowly expire over time, that you only replenish by resting, eating, or going to the bathroom...why its interesting is that while replenishing, you're exposed to being killed (more or less disabled from moving or doing anything for roughly 10 seconds), and if your assassin is nearby they can activate a death on you for full points. Also I'm a bit of a fan of the tone and art style of this game, and other cartoony/non-serious multiplayer games (TF2's style comes to mind).

Possibly a little TMI, but supposedly one of the Assassin's Creed games (Brotherhood I think?) has a very similar multiplayer too, and there is speculation Ubisoft bought the rights to publish this game in order to cannibalize BGT's multiplayer for AC. Interesting posts in the steam forum for BGT regarding this, its a pity it didn't end up being more popular since I haven't played another game like it...I think a free weekend would really do the game well.

Bloody Good Time was the sequel to The Ship. I think it improved on The Ship in about a dozen different ways but it had smaller maps and no cat and mouse. You could always see your target at more or less all times.

Since it has had zero support, the game is deader than a doornail.

You know, I really have to thank Steam for really wanting me to try new games. I mean a lot of the bigger games are well are facing this level of sameness and I been turned off to a lot of franchises because of it.

With Steam and these sales, I can try a ton of indie games for like $2.50 a pop, and if I don't like it, I wasted $2.50 not $10-60 on a game and I am ok with that. I mean games like Puzzle Agent, Rock of Ages, stuff like that I would have never considered buying but at $2.50 I said hey it's worth a shot. Of course I check to make sure people have played them, but still in all.

Also I would like to thank this group on here, because I feel were a community now who really helped each other through this sale, weeding out the games we would like/hate and offering honest recommendations. Plus helping us get rid of the stuff we don't want. :grouphug:
dammit, if i keep reading this thread i'm going to end up buying bastion. then cursing myself (and all of you...) when it shows up in an indie bundle / hits $3 as a daily / becomes free (?) before i've even had a chance to play it.
Play the demo, thats what talked me out of it.
after midnight their time and the coupons don't work, guess it was wishful thinking that it would stack with the leftover sales.

steam days never start til 10 am pacific
Yes, but the hope was that, in an oversight, calendar days would trump steam days. Considering how poorly prepared steam seemed to be during this sale, it was a valid hope.

It would have been a nice thing for Valve to do.

Oh well, if they don't announce a reasonable program for using these "coupons" tomorrow I know I'll be watching Amazon DD instead. The coupon thing they're doing already cost Steam at least one sale from me just now.

Oh god, Steam is tempting me with Skyrim for $40... That level designer being released this month is beyond tempting but I already own the game for the 360...

I picked up Bastion for my friend's birthday, I was going to pay the full $15 but this just makes it extra nice.
There are some good deals in the steam trading forums right now. I was able to get Killing Floor for 2 pieces of coal.
I think you just got extremely lucky. No one has use for coal anymore.

They're still valuable. A lot less so now, but still valuable nonetheless.

Oh you stop that you :whistle2:#
There are some good deals in the steam trading forums right now. I was able to get Killing Floor for 2 pieces of coal.
Hmm, that's strange. Haven't seen anything anywhere near that good on the forums.

Found out about the coal/gift stuff during the final days of the event. I did win a copy of Portal 2 just for playing L4D2, though. That was neat.

I was looking for a particular game, but I don't think anyone has spare copies of it. Plus I only have crappy TF2 hats to offer anyway.

Happy holidays.

Yeah at this point coal is so worthless. I traded someone 42 coal and a few TF2 hats for Assassin's Creed 2. It took me 2 hours sifting through the SPUF trading forum to find anyone that would even take my coal. AT LEAST I HAVE A GAME NOW! :whee:

I will post my final haul later today.

Does anyone want Portal 2? I'm not looking to trade it for anything, but I feel it's a waste to just keep it in my inventory. All my friends either have it or don't and wouldn't play it (blasphemers, I need new friends).

I picked up some of the games that had achievements that I didn't already have. That games that I picked up that I was actually interested in were:

Total War: Shogun 2
Orcs Must Die!
Recettear
H.A.W.X (played it on the PS3, wanted to do something with my flight stick)
Hard Reset
Red Faction: Armageddon (I think through Amazon, though)
Homefront
Bastion

PM me if you're interested in Portal 2, btw. I'll probably be asleep so I'll just give it to the first person that does.

Edit: someone responded for Portal 2 already.

I own it on the PS3 due to a deal I got earlier even though I really wanted the PC. I'd recommend waiting until next winter sale where we may see a sale price of 66%. Then that would be a decent price to pick up for all the mods.

Dang it, there have been a lot of mixed opinions on Bastion - I may end up sitting this one out until the next sale.

At least I've got another 3 hours or so to decide.

My big winners for Steam were DLC and Indies for sure, but I also picked up quite a few games from GOG.com and one Steam game from GetGamesGo.com. Also, Battlefield 2 appeared in my Games list during the sale, and I have no record of how I received it...

I didn't separate out trades & 4-packs, because that would be too hard to keep up with. :)
I found the narrator guy worth $5, aha...I know, lame.
I actually found the Narrator somewhat annoying and very gimmicky. I think it's great that so many people liked it, but I think people made too much of a deal out of it - like it was the best game mechanic in the last 5 years.
dammit, if i keep reading this thread i'm going to end up buying bastion. then cursing myself (and all of you...) when it shows up in an indie bundle / hits $3 as a daily / becomes free (?) before i've even had a chance to play it.
That happens to me a lot, but just think about the fact that you are supporting the developer. It's not like your money goes to a black hole or Valve takes all of it. The extra money you spend supports the game and future games from that developer. That's how I don't get upset when I buy games like Fallout New Vegas and Shogun 2 at launch and don't even play them until after they are $5-$10... :p

Any good recommendations for any cheap non-daily deal games?

I picked up that Faerie Solitaire game a few CAGs recommended and that was great.

Someone posted this thread a few pages back that has a nice list of cheap "non-Daily Deal" games with screen shots.

Personally, if you haven't gotten them yet, I recommend VVVVVV and Blocks that Matter. I found both of those to be horribly entertaining and fun.
Bloody Good Time was the sequel to The Ship. I think it improved on The Ship in about a dozen different ways but it had smaller maps and no cat and mouse. You could always see your target at more or less all times.

Since it has had zero support, the game is deader than a doornail.
That first review sounds like something exactly up my alley. Thanks. As for it being a sequel to The Ship, I assume you mean in spirit? But with that comparison I am reminded of the fact I have a copy of The Ship I bought in store for 2.48 that I haven't played yet. Given the relatively minor discount on Bloody Good Time I think I'll install The Ship first and then pay full price if I have to for Bloody Good Time once I am done with The Ship.
Any good recommendations for any cheap non-daily deal games?

I picked up that Faerie Solitaire game a few CAGs recommended and that was great.
If you like classic Metroid games can't go wrong with Dark Void Zero for 99 cents.

So I have a couple of hours left to get those last few achievements that I haven't gotten yet. At this point, I'm down to Super Meat Boy (too hard) Dungeon Defenders (I've never played and so I don't have time level up enough) and the free to play games. Already did TF2 & Spiral Knights.

That leaves Crimecraft, Rusty Hearts & Rise Of the immortals. Keeping in mind that I've never played any of these games, rank these achievements in order of their ease of acquisition. with 2 1/2 hours left, can I even do any of these?

BTW, I've already downloaded them all. So it's just a matter of playing them to get the achievement.

Crimecraft - can be had in under 30 minutes
Rusty Hearts - took me about 45 minutes
Rise of the Immortals - minimum 45 minutes, and there's no guaranteeing you'll be successful.

I tried RoI - and I play MOBAs regularly, I gave up because the game is so bad and the players were all wanting the achievement and refused to kill enemy's. As a result, we got steamrolled by the computer and I never played again.

In this order: Crime Craft (about 20-25 minutes - you don't have to get all 200 points in one game) Rusty Hearts (about 30-45 minutes) and the ROTI (Maybe an hour or longer - depends on who you're playing with)

Thanks guys. Gonna give crime craft a try. If I have time, I'll also try rusty hearts. But it looks like ROTI is gonna be beyond my grasp at this point.

Rise of the Ancients took me ~15-20 minutes. Play a healer, just heal your teammates. You get assists every time.

(BTW if you play 3PVE you are playing against bots)

Thanks to the NeoGaf lists, I bought Guns of Icarus and Hinterland and put about 5 indies on my wishlist (such as Tiny Bang Story, Star Raiders, and I-Fluid). I already have so many other indies I picked up, that I'm going to wait on those.

Also, in regards to the Indie Bundles conversation, I also think that too many bundles can devalue the games. I try to pay $1.50-$2 a game for each bundle (though I only count the games I don't already own), since that's what I'd pay on Steam, but I do get tempted to spend less the more bundles I buy, and the average is almost always half what I pay, showing that many people are paying a dollar or two total.

Now, I'm not judging anyone's purchase amount (since people may already have all the games or have literally no money or whatever), but I'm just pointing out that the developers aren't getting much for their games - whatever the reason.

So, I'm very curious to see how long the bundles will keep going, or if minimum values will be put into place. Another thing they could do is make you pay a certain amount above the average to get the bonus games (kind of like an eBay auction that requires $0.25 or $0.50 increments in bids). That way, the average price goes up quicker as people pay more to get the bonus games.

I don't know...just thoughts... :D

If I may, I do question the need to even go for those remaining achievements. After all, you're either going to get a piece of coal or Valve coupon.

I don't mean to be a pain, but I only had actual fun with one or two of the sale's Objectives. Therefore, I'd feel my time was being wasted if I were still pursuing them.

I just played a bit of Crime craft and boy are those controls horrible. Press F1 to throw a snowball? Are you kidding me?

I don't think I was doing too well in the match. I killed a few people, but I was on the receiving end a hell of a lot more. I'm not sure if I was reading the score right, but it looked like I was actually in negative numbers. Does that mean that I've now got to make up that deficit before I can start making a dent in the 200 point requirement?

If that was the case, I decided that it was just better to quit before I ended up further in the hole.

You could also win a Valve game.

I did the achievements I could to get 14 coal and craft two items. One was a game. I also found I loved Psychonauts in the process since I hadn't played it. Moreso than giving you free things, I think the achievements were to encourage you to play.

The only reason that I'm still pushing on with these last few achievements is because I'm sitting at 6 coals. I want one more shot at crafting before this is all over. Either that or I'd like to win Portal 2.
I spent more at Gamersgate during the Steam sale, picking up (for cheaper than Steam) Shogun II, Deus Ex: HR DLC, Orcs Must Die! + DLC, Civ V Vikings DLC, X3: Albion Prelude (OK that was 75c cheaper on Steam later), and Sanctum. It was a good year for Gamersgate, they really improved a lot, while Steam has pretty much stayed the same.
I've seen many mentions to GamersGate.com, but I have never used it. It kind of looks like Direct2Drive's model where there is no client, and you just download the game files through them (also like GOG, I guess). Is that right?

I personally am very intentional about only having games from a few places so I never forget where they're at if I need to play/download them. That's why I currently only use Steam, GOG, and Origin (just because of BF3 and my retail games that I activated on Origin). I also just downloaded Desura due to it's mod and indie game support and have many indie games on there from bundles, but I haven't really used it yet. I plan to install some mods soon using it.

The exception to my "rule" is a couple games I bought from Amazon or GetGamesGo that are Steam activated, meaning that it doesn't matter where I bought them once they're on Steam.
