Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Which retail CD Keys are accepted on Steam?

Just a heads up for other CAGs who live in this thread, over at Green Man Gaming Warhammer 40000: Space Marine is on sale for $12.50 for the next 4 hours.
Here's the link to the Steam trade thread for all your trading and selling needs. :) It's mentioned in the OP but I think we should make it a bit more obvious in V3 of the thread. Anyway, happy trading and good luck with the coupon.

I'm not sure if you're just looking for the expansion or not, but just to be sure make sure you get Titan Quest Gold (or Immortal Throne if you already have TQ). IM adds a lot of extra content that truly rounds out the TQ experience to a large degree. Also, make sure to visit TitanQuest.net for the latest patches, mods, etc. The game is no longer supported by the now defunct developer but TitanQuest.net is host to a community-made series of patches that fix and update all manner of things.
Thanks! Yeah, I was looking around to getting Titan Quest Gold, but I was able to trade for Titan Quest vanilla. Now I'm hoping to find someone with Immortal Throne (not likely) or some coupons from the Holiday achievements.

Thanks for the help!
They sold out and replaced it with DoW 2: Retribution.
They sold out but were still selling (keys would come later), but the deals are only 24 hours long, it's Retribution now because it's the fifth day :)
If you guys could help with the V3 thread, it would be fantastic. Mid-week sales don't matter so much unless the deal is something really special. But I'm thinking we should at least make sure to post the weekend deal, and every day of major themed sales.

I would love it if everybody uses my established format because I think it's the most attractive and useful (percentages off are not actually useful). But if you only have time to stick the list in, that's better than nothing. Just make a note next to the place where we mention when a section was updated (Updated 1/4 etc.) and someone else can go back and fix the formatting later.

I want to do more with the thread, but I've ended up with the unenviable problem of a real-life workload that never seems to calm down. Also, for me to put in the effort here, it needs to be appreciated. The occasional thanks are great, but actually pitching in with the Wiki is 10 times better thanks. That would help me maintain enthusiasm and put in more energy even when things are hectic.

Of course, I also appreciate everyone who posts in the thread and keeps it alive, even when we're slacking with the OP. The discussion is consistently great, and we don't get the annoying entitlement posts that show up in most other deal threads. (The consistently high quality of Steam sales may be a factor, but still!) This thread is one of the reasons I'm proud to be a CAG.
I, too, would like to throw out a quick "thank you" to my CAGly pal, EastX. Your efforts here have not gone unnoticed - I understand that you really do want to maintain this thread and keep it concise but accessible to all. However, the "real life workload" has kept you from doing maintenance here on a more consistent basis. Nevertheless, your efforts have kept us from making multiple Steam and Steam Deal threads here on the forums, which would have scattered an otherwise dedicated collection of Steam-centric CAG's. I don't have a lot of time to post here these days, but I'll be sure to offer my support and, at the very least, post when able.

I want to take a quick moment and thank the civil members of this thread, as well. It's the CAG's that are helpful and welcoming that make this thread successful version after version. We're all on the same quest to find good games for a good price, and, when we work together, we achieve a community, as well.

Keep up the good work.
I'm surprised that Steam doesn't have a blog type of feature. I would actually use it to keep track of the games I beat this year, probably just use the profile instead, seem like a pretty obvious feature they would have imo
Kaotik, there is a Steam RSS feed, and it's great:
http://store.steampowered.com/feeds/news.xml

It's the old news feed that Steam used to offer on the front page of their client, before the new (current) client version. Back before they had so many gazillions of games, and each game's update or sale was actually newsworthy.

For people who check in daily at Steam (or here!), it's not too much to keep up with. I follow it in Google Reader, myself.

Edit: Upon rereading, I think understand now that you meant you wanted your own blogging space. That, I can't help you with. I suppose your Steam profile "about me" would work. Or use the "recommends" feature -- In 2011 I started writing a quality review for each game I finish, including going back and adding reviews for games I played long ago. 74 reviews, and counting!

... If ppl would like to see my "recommends" reviews on Steam store pages, add me in Steam. I've posted several of them here, maybe you've seen them. My userID is the same as CAG. I'm not as cranky as RollingSkull, but I do offer critical insight.
Wow, seems kinda over priced even being 50% off.
true that. it should be $30 or 20$ as full price, and discounted to $15 as a sale.
I guess the price will drop soon enough. Theyre just trying to milk money from all the customers that REALLY want the game on steam.
Remember when this was 10 cents during that sale on GFWL last December?
Yup. I was just checking xbox.com to make sure it was the same edition. Good times. I wish they'd done that again this year. Lots of good games for around $1.
Wow, seems kinda over priced even being 50% off.
It is. It was $0.10 last year on GFWL Marketplace. Unless you value Steam 20,000% more than GFWL, which I know some of you do. It is overpriced.

I was curious if my old GFW keys from when they had the 10 cent AoE3 promotion would work, so I went to load up the client. Crash on launch. Anyone else able to give it a shot?
Remember when this was 10 cents during that sale on GFWL last December?
I should probably play that sometime, instead of buying more games...

The last time I started it up, it wanted me to shop for games on http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/PC. I don't know, can you redeem it like you would an Xbox code now?
I should probably play that sometime, instead of buying more games...
I forgot I even owned AOE III until today . It's been forever, and well I don't even have GFWL installed.

Updated the OP.

eastx, I completely spaced that this was a Wiki Post and never thought about helping contribute. I really appreciate all of your work with this thread and will be sure to try and help out when I can, especially on the new V3!

On to the deals today at hand however... they kind of suck haha
Everyone getting that new indie bundle? I'm kinda interested in Fractal.
I picked it up for Nuclear dawn, but Fractal does look interesting. Still steam sale just ended now an indie bundle had to roll up and kick my wallet while its down. Sadness
Everyone getting that new indie bundle? I'm kinda interested in Fractal.
Fractal is really fun. It's good puzzle game with great music and a good mechanic. Although I suck at it .

Super Crossfire while not on Steam is alright for short 10 minute bursts.

Can't say about the others yet, need to try them.
After reinstalling the client, the keys aren't recognized in Steam. Not surprising but thought I'd let everyone know.
They were never Steam keys to begin with.
Everyone getting that new indie bundle? I'm kinda interested in Fractal.
I'm debating that one since I probably won't get to these games for ages. Otherwise, I've been interested in Fractal and Max and the Magic Marker for quite some time. (Admittedly, I've always assumed that Max and the Magic Marker is simple and suited for small children, but I have a fondness for games with the platform-drawing mechanic seen in titles like Crayon Physics Deluxe and Kirby: Canvas Curse.)
They were never Steam keys to begin with.
No, but a handful of games that weren't originally on Steam can still be activated. Which is why I asked, tried, and reported back, to save someone else the effort and question that was bound to come.

Preordered IndieRoyale since I knew I wanted Nuclear Dawn -- seems like that was the right choice since the minimum price is now 10 cents more than preordering.
No love for the X-COM Complete Pack at $5.09?
Not saying it is bad, but I got it for what $2 a year or more ago?
No love for the X-COM Complete Pack at $5.09?
As others have said, it was down to $2 at one point, and likely the only worthwhile games in there is the original and Terror From The Deep. I know Apocalypse was a mess.
As others have said, it was down to $2 at one point, and likely the only worthwhile games in there is the original and Terror From The Deep. I know Apocalypse was a mess.
The $2 was the pack release price if I'm not mistaken. I don't remember it ever returning to that price point, and I somehow doubt it will.

Oh well, I picked up UFO defense during the summer sale, Terror from the deep in the winter sale, and will no doubt now be picking up Apocalypse to round it off. The other two can diaf xD

i bought the x-com pack a long time ago for 3$ish. I love strategy rpgs, but somehow I couldnt get into the original xcom. I didnt know what to do. All i want to do is fight the battles. I have no idea what to do in that globe screen.
Remember when this was 10 cents during that sale on GFWL last December?
Technically 2 Decembers ago :p

Anyway, it's #1 on the top seller list right now. Good for them.
I paid like 2 bucks for the xcoms last year... tried playing it and couldn't understand it...
I played one or two of them when I was a kid and found them extremely difficult to pick up again when I tried about 4 years ago. I think it's one of those franchises that probably only works for a tiny audience who doesn't already have some familiarity.

So, if I'm not a strategy game person in the least bit, or I don't have nostalgia for this series, I should probably avoid it like the plague, eh?
So, if I'm not a strategy game person in the least bit, or I don't have nostalgia for this series, I should probably avoid it like the plague, eh?
Although I am in the minority, I did not enjoy X-Com. Not when it was new, and not 10 years later when I tried it again. I don't know what rose-colored glasses people are wearing when they reminisce about this game, but, well, it was never my cup of tea. No bashing required, I fully acknowledge that I'm in the minority on this.

However, I read today at PC Gamer that Firaxis has committed to making a new X-Com game. Not the FPS X-Com game that 2K Games is making, but a real turn-based strategy modernization of the original. Perhaps I'll give it another go. :D

Yeah for those looking to pick up the X-com games they do have a steep steep learning curve and you'll probably keep learning new things about the game after you've played for a while. Might want to look at some guides and such before you sit down to play.

- "Hm, X-Com on sale today... and hey, I have a 2K coupon! Wow! These coupons are actually useful!"
- Add X-Com Complete to cart and checkout. No discount.
- "..."
- Add single X-Com game to cart and checkout. Only the single game gets discounted.
- "wtf. Stupid good for nothing Steam coupons."
I played one or two of them when I was a kid and found them extremely difficult to pick up again when I tried about 4 years ago. I think it's one of those franchises that probably only works for a tiny audience who doesn't already have some familiarity.
For those of us who loved TRPG's back in the day it's still an unsurpassed title in many ways, but yeah, getting into it now is asking too much for most people.

UFO is *harsh*, you're not going to go through any mission without team members dying left and right, partly because especially in the beginning they're vastly outclassed by the enemy equipment/accuracy, but also until you learn not to be *anywhere* out in the open without some points to react. (not to mention having soldiers who have a decent reaction skill)

That said, it was, and still is an awesome title. I still love picking it up now and again, and for a lot of games, nostalgia gets me to the title screen, and playing for an hour or two. This title can keep me going for days.
- Add single X-Com game to cart and checkout. Only the single game gets discounted.
I wouldn't mind that since I only need one game anyway, but it's better saved for more expensive 2K titles I imagine ;)
So, if I'm not a strategy game person in the least bit, or I don't have nostalgia for this series, I should probably avoid it like the plague, eh?
Might be a good idea. On that note however, I was pretty sure that the original X-Com was considered freeware at this point. It may be worth a google search to see if it is, and to grab a download if so. That way you can give it a fair shot. =)

As an alternative to gcorlett's experience, I got the original X-Com on a PC-Gamer disc back in high school. Having absolutely no experience with the game and not even being aware of the hype, I plunked it in and tried it out. For somebody playing X-Com for the first time, I would liken it to a rogue like. The game is VERY unforgiving, and your first number of games will probably go poorly. However the more you play, the more you pick up about how to play properly. You realize what research options are kind of worthless (early game, or at all) and how to safely traverse the map with minimal casualties.

There's always a random factor to X-Com, be it enemy locations on the map or simply alien AI. (I have had a game where the very first alien attack was against my base. o_O ) For the most part however, you learn from it and simply step up your game. I find this aspect of it rather rewarding.
