CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I don't know about save file corruption with GFWL, but my hatred of the service comes from its horrid DLC installation. It failed to install a DLC I registered for Fable 3 about 15 times before it magically worked and I didn't change a single setting anywhere. I checked all my network settings to ensure it would work, but couldn't find any issues. So then I went searching for technical help on forums and similar sites; there I found a ton of people who had similar issues installing DLC with both this game and others. I don't know about you, but an issue of this level remaining unaddressed after many people have reported or talked about it is unacceptable for any service, so I stopped buying games that use GFWL whenever possible (massively discounted games are a bit better, but still, fuck that service and all its bullcrap; Microsoft can do better and they will have to in order to earn my business).

One decent point on the issue is that Microsoft can benefit more from the Xbox platform, so they put little effort into publishing and supporting PC titles. I understand the reasoning, since gaining $10 in royalties on a single Xbox game would make for a great motivator. However, I don't understand why more resources cannot be put into supporting the platform that made (and makes) Microsoft so well-known. (At the same time, I suppose it's assumed by the vast majority that Windows has the largest selection of games, whether independent or widely distributed.)

To the company's credit, Microsoft did start the "Games for Windows Live Marketplace," but it was poorly implemented and supported. It faded fast after its launch, and Microsoft did little to make it a real competitor with Steam.

For CAG's, though, the Games for Windows Live Marketplace will be remembered as the place where we got Viva Pinata for 10 cents.

In the end, I'm deciding to pass on Adam's Venture. I have no qualms with religious elements, but at $4.41, it would sit in my inventory for a while and maybe see 75% off in the Winter Sale. I just bought the Pendulo Pack last month, so I have enough adventure gaming to scratch that itch through at least the rest of the year.

Honestly not a bad idea for a game, if it were mixed in with a mini-game type mechanic like AAAAAAAAAA, but I'd consider that more cutesy as opposed to this one which would probably work better with HD graphics and scenery to reward the player for completing climbs. ;)

Of course, you could also throw in some challenges like a slip or eventual fall if you screw up too many times. Of course, the falls could be a cinematic which could also be visually rewarding, and could be based on how high you've gotten. ;)

Yeah! How does that sound!?

EDIT: IN FOR 20!

I missed the Viva Pinata deal sadly, because that is the kind of weird assed game I'd be all over.

The only thing I ever bought on there directly is the Bioshock 2: Minerva's Den DLC when it went on sale for $5 and that's only because it is the only place you can buy it. Thank goodness 2K got over their GFWL phase.

And Shadowrun and Max Payne 2

I managed to get the Viva Pinata one and missed the AoE3 one. I've never gotten Viva Pinata to work. Could never log into GFWL (something about Vista bs) and without so I couldn't save the game.

Other than that (and the disappointing outlook on the dumbed down Dark Souls port, was really looking forward to kb/m support), I've never had any issue with GFWL. I was peeved with the AoEO DLC going semi F2P but oh well. Enjoyed the hell out of that game.

Wow triple post WTF? lol

Agreed, that was really lame. They should have given those of us who bought those dlc with, you know, real money some sort of bonus or recognition for that. In game cash would have been nice but even just some little 'founder' or 'supporter' vanity item would have worked. Just something.

Otherwise it just seems like a 'let's follow the trends and go for a cash grab and don't really care about those who supported us before that' sort of thing.

/End Age of Empires Online rant

I got 500 Empire Points, or was that given to everyone?
They did a bunch of those deals in November 2010.
Damn. I wonder if I intentionally passed on it because I didn't care about it. Still, for $.10 it would have been worth trying out. I know I got AoEIII for $.10, so I was definitely aware of the sales at that point...
And Age of Empires III! So yeah, there are at least two things I like about it.
It was very strange to see a lot of people jumping on AoEIII at the steam sale for 100x the price of a few years back.

ditto

From my understanding, they gave that to all existing players prior to the free to play change, even those who didn't buy the DLC and never spent any money at all on the game.

I guess I am nitpicking, but still I felt like I supported them early on and didn't get anything special for it that I couldn't have gotten had I just started playing the 'lite' version for free without the DLC and not spent a cent on the game. I just feel like they should have differentiated the paying players from the free ones in some way.
I regret not seeing the Viva Pinata deal, those games are extremely fun. Hell I'd pick it up for a bunch more than $.10.
Figured as much. I never paid full price for any of the civs and I think I have like ~300 hours in the game. I like what they did with the new quests but the Crete grinding has halted my taste for the game entirely.

I, like a few others, don't recall Shadowrun offered for 10 cents. I could easily be mistaken, since the GFWL Marketplace is quite the distant memory.

Oh well, we'll always have the fascinating SNES version; The soundtrack for that game had a very distinct "Secret of Mana feel" to it.

Has there been a giveaway somewhere for the game Dynamite Jack?

I'm starting to see it pop up a bit on steamgifts and I'm seeing it being offered by people on various trade forums. It's not a tidal wave of keys like you'd see if it were a Reddit code drop or from the summer seal thing. But previous to a few days ago, I had almost never seen it offered anywhere. Now it seems to be showing up a lot more frequently.

From the Steam thread I remembered that I had picked up AOEIII and Viva Pinata from GFWL. I have since bought a new computer and now understand all the GFWL hate. I had to download several times with the download getting to the very end and then saying it was corrupt. I also had multiple issues with logging in. Viva Pinata is surprisingly enjoyable though.

@Motoki
Here's one simulator right up your alley, High School Dreams ($1.23 @ GMG)

You’re the new girl in town and it seems that everywhere you look there are boys! Sporty boys, funny boys, talented boys, good looking boys, intense boys, nerdy boys…

Pluck up the courage to talk to them and get to know them, see if they have the same interests as you, dress up to look your best, get invited out on dates, talk to your friends at school and spill all the juicy gossip, learn who’s in and who’s out.

Is it just a bit of fun or could it really be true love?

Create and dress your own unique character.
Explore key locations including the high school, shopping mall and park.
Date a variety of unique boys, from the popular Jock to the Chic Geek.
Go shopping at the mall; purchase new clothes and make-up.
Play a variety of fun mini games including Dancing, Mini-golf and Ice Skating.

Why am I convinced this is totally worth it? ...well at least I can buy this with less shame/self-questioning than the male-CAG populace.

Edit: Bought!

If it was on steam Id have bought 20 copies by now.

Today's deal is the Double Fine Bundle at 50% off ($14.99)

It includes Psychonauts, Costume Quest, and Stacking. Individual games are not on sale. The package has been cheaper and the next time it's on sale will probably include Iron Brigade.

I saw that a while back but before it was on sale. Apparently, it's a Greenman Gaming exclusive.

At that price I will probably grab it, sure bought, thanks for the heads up.

*Edit: Also, it apparently reviewed pretty well from the GMG user reviews.

Dang, not a horribly good Daily Deal. At least I grabbed Costume Quest during the Summer Sale for $3.74 - I'm looking forward to starting that one [around October].

You know, I could be wrong about Iron Brigade being included next time as it's a different publisher. Still, this bundle has been half that price before. I love the games, but now's not the time to buy if you've been waiting.

I saw a thread on sg a couple days ago saying how the iOS version was on sale, and through that you could get a steam key. In the thread there was a little talk of it being exploitable (sorry, didn't care enough to check validity of those statements), so I've been avoiding them, just in case. The game's cheap enough as it is that if I really wanted it I'd buy it during the next sale.

All the Double Fine Games are very good. That price however, is not.

I've been trying to unload costume quest by itself for $3 forever without much luck.

People tend to think of me as an otaku, or a weaboo (which isn't true, by the way) because I think Asian women are attractive and subsequently spend lots of time with them. Having said this, and having had many nerdy Asian females as my friends, I can tell you that there's a huge market for free-to-play dating sims. And eroge (erotic games). Although charging a price through a third-party seller like GMG should infer a more refined gameplay experience than someone's hobby game they made in their spare time and are distributing for free would, there are nevertheless many great games akin to High School Dreams on indie developers' websites.

You can usually find free games to torrent on Nyaa (please don't torrent the licensed games) or just by searching for them. And if you haven't played Saya no Uta, for example...do it. ;)

Iron Brigade is now available and 20% off ($11.99 or $35.99 for a 4-pack) until August 20th.

Join The Mobile Trench Brigade and protect humanity from the evil Monovision menace in this Tower Defense Shooter from Tim Schafer's Double Fine Productions. Use a combination of mobile firepower and stationary defenses to turn the tide of war in our favor. Customize your trench with thousands of possible loadouts.
Genre: Action, Strategy

Freeware is one thing because free is free and I can't complain. However the odd exception here and there aside, I'm not willing to go down that rabbit hole of having a bajillion paid games from a bajillion sources.

I feel the way about spreadsheets that mommie dearest did about wire hangers. NO SPREADSHEETS! EVER!!

All that being said, I'm a bit interested in (to clarify PG or maybe R but definitely not X or XXX) dating sim-ish games if they make it to Steam. I've kind of got my eye on that magic academy sort of visual novel, sort of RPG, sort of dating sim game, whatever the hell it's called (I'm too lazy to look it up). The art style kind of turns me off though and I'm generally okay with Anime.

Maybe I will check out some of the free ones, but realistically if they aren't right up in my face and I've got to do work to seek them out vs a ton of games I already have that need playing I probably won't.

It's not quite the same as a dating sim but still visual novels have that same sort of cult status. I like Analogue quite a bit and it even inspired me to check out Christine Love's earlier works but quite honestly if it wasn't on Steam I can almost guarantee you I never would have looked for it or played it.

Just like in the physical world, in the virtual one sometimes location is everything.

Let me know how much you enjoy it, it attualy does sound kind of fun. There isn't really to many date/life sims on the PC that are good quality. plus have a 1.50 credit on GmG

Also if you haven't check out Magical Diary on Steam I loved that game and will soon give it another play though. Basic run down of Magical Diary is imagine a Harry Potter type world with a life/date sim with many different storylines and things you can do but only so much time to alot during each play through kind of like Persona. So each play-though you end up finding out a new story and path that you can go down, finding out things about characters you didn't know before through previous play-through.

This isn't directed at you, just an aside about the Asian fantasy thing. In my mind it seems kind of creepy when a guy fetishes a woman just because of her race or primary status, like say because she is deaf or because she is white or blonde or anything. Attraction is a big part of finding a partner but just personally I would never want to be with someone who basically fetishes me as a person just because of one aspect.

Maybe this is just the more common thing men talk about, so it is more obvious and every man fetishizes about their own niche of women, but it has always just creeped me out when thinking about someone being with me only because they get off about one aspect of who I am.

Torrent sites that on first glance and judging from his comments have non-freeware titles.

$15 for a tower defense? Even at the discounted 4-pack price I can't justify the 9 bucks that Trenched/Iron Brigade would cost me. The genre has too many games at a lower price that I can wait for a sale.

Maybe I'm missing something but Iron Brigade doesn't look like a tower defense game at all -- looks more like an action shooter.

It is Tower Defense. The closest it comes to any other TD games is Sanctum, but it's still pretty different. The focus on action is greater than any other game like that that I've seen and it's doesn't have the same rigid grid setup that many have. There's no blocking off sections to create paths or direct lines that the enemies have to follow. It's more similar to your typical TD game than Portal is to Battlefield, but not much. Iron Brigade is probably closer to playing the Engineer in Team Fortress than it is to Fieldrunners.

Geno, I'm siding with you on this one - I never use torrents; I believe no good comes from their usage. What I can't find through normal, legal means, I don't need.

I think posting links to such sites creates a slippery slope, but, then again, the people here are a good lot; I'm not too worried.

Really tempted by iron brigade just cause I really love anything mech like. Gonna see if I can't find any first impressions of the pc version before I hit purchase.
