CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

So I watched a review of Recettear and do not see what all the hype is about.

From watching the review I do not want it, coming here with all of the raving recommendations however I am curious if I am somehow missing something...?

Yes, you're missing this:
really want Sins of Solar Empire: Rebellion but $30 seems bit much... I know it just came out but guess I'll try to hold out for the next sale.
How does it compare to Trinity? I doubt Rebellion will hit
Never played any of the Total Wars games a not a lot of strategy games in general.
If I already own Shogun 2, does it make any sense to play the older titles that are on sale right now?
I don't imagine there's a amazing story in any of them and the game mechanics must be similar across the franchise, right?
Mechanics are fairly similar but the older games didn't have ship battles till Empire/Napoleon.

Really the main differance is the setting and the fractions and the map.

Shogun is all about fedual japan.

Medieval 2 deals with well the medieval period of history so knights and archers and eventually cannons and the first types of muskets.

Rome deals with roman history time period with Greece and like elephants and flaming pigs and slingers and so on.

That's really the draw and selling point for each game. The period of time and units and nations is completely different from each game.

I must be the only one who just doesn't care for the STALKER games. I own the first and tried it years ago when it first came out. The TONS of reading turned me off, the fiddly menus turned me off, and it just seemed like the weapons never felt quite right. It felt very second-rate. Perhaps I need to revisit.

Recettear I guess is more suited to those who love the Harvest Moon games or even Rune Factory (BTW if you haven't played those either.......by some weird chance..... please do).

If you try Stalker again get the Stalker Complete mod, there is a version for each of the games now.

The mod redoes the entire game with better balance and fixes all the bugs better lighting and shadows and graphics and basically makes the game feel more like a first rate release. However if it was just the theme of the game you didn't like the mod prolly wont fix that =p

Thanks for this. I've always wanted to try this series out and this just tops it off.
I don't know why I laughed so hard at this. Haha.

Well, they did a pretty good job at making me want things I didn't know I wanted. I got Limbo, Anomaly, and NFS:HS today. I resisted Just Cause 2, but I probably will regret it shortly. That and Sins Trinity at $5 is tempting, but I'll probably resist that in the end.
You turned down JC2 at that price?
You will regret that one!

I hate Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games, but I like Recettear. Riddle me that. ;)

re: Reccettear

I think the fun of it is running and managing a store with junk you found or bought from other people, haggling, all that. It's kind of an under done genre. The gameplay is relatively simplistic but it's addicting.

For $5 I think it's worth it but like I said anyone who despises Anime should stay away.

- relaying the cricket scores to me when I can't get down to Headingley;
- and other great, jolly rapery.

I'm happy to contract out his services for four pounds seven shillings and tuppence per day once we've got settled in.

I see someone has been playing Coconut Queen and is ready as a ripe papapya.
I would say make sure you can run the game, I tried to instal the game but when I launched it through steam and tried to log in. It kept saying I needed to enter in my cd key, only you never get one through steam to give to games for windows live. So could never even sign in to the game.

Apparently it is a very common bug if you check out their forums and steams forums. After a hour of trying to just log in to a free 2 play I gave up myself.
Welcome to Games For Windows Live.

Oy. Finally fully caught up on this thread and updating the OP.

I am still on the fence about Recettear... We shall see, I have until tomorrow to decide.

Thief however? INSTABUY.
Is Hot Pursuit similar to Burnout Paradise? Itching for a racing game and really wanted Driver: SF but now contemplating this one.
Not similar, Burnout Paradise is my favorite car game of all time and I hate Hot Pursuit. Need for Speed Most Wanted is coming up and is essentially a sequel to Burnout Paradise, check it out.

The upcoming NFS: Most Wanted is much more like Burnout Paradise than Hot Pursuit is.

Beat me to it but I'll echo this. Unless you're the sort who refuses to mod a game the first time through, I'd really recommend this mod. Doesn't change the core game but adds a lot of quality of life/technical enhancements.
Thanks for this. I've always wanted to try this series out and this just tops it off.
Ya I am working through Stalker again with the mod and then onto the next two. It is like day and night with that mod with graphics but also performance
and how the AI and like just everything.

There is no way I could ever play stalker now without those mods, even tried it briefly on clear sky where when it first came out it was buggy and had poor performance and now with that mod it worked much much better.

I mean they are a small Russian developer so even with the mods have to expect a few weird things(Like everything has collision detection like most games do, However your allies when they seek cover to save their lives will end up pushing you out of it. Kind of like the reverse in other fps games where you end up pushing your allies out of cover and into fire. ) But really just a minor thing as you barely fight with npcs and when you do just go lone wolf and flank the enemy as your allies fight head on =p

Sad part is, Every time I look at it I generally want to play it from my history with Age of Empire 2..

I actually really don't like the complete mod for stalker. It makes the game much easier and makes the weapons super accurate. I like Stalker when it's pitch black at night time having gun battles with huge groups of bandits, all of whom can take me down in one or two hits. I installed a much more complicated mod system that incorporates the graphical enhancements from complete, but keeps the new weapons and gameplay difficulty/realism from amk.
Edit: This is the guide I used for modding stalker. It has the best weather effects, anomalies, weapons, difficulty, and graphics by combining all mods into one game.

Thanks for that. I've had SOC forever now but have never gotten around to playing it. That mod has me interested in finally giving it a go. Went ahead and grabbed COP too (skipped Clearsky).

Carpe Fulger Bundle, Indie VII , and dungeons of dredmor expansion today for me. First purchase since late last Friday; finally something interesting that I didn't have already popped up. Kinda glad I passed on Q.U.B.E. and Vessel earlier in the sale and got them in the pack.

Thanks for helping not buy I game I don't need and I just saw gameplay footage for NFS: Most Wanted and that is the game I need to get.

Sins of a Solar Empire Trinity is definitely worth the $5. I already own the base game and Entrenchment, and I'm considering this offer so I can pick up the Diplomacy piece and own the game on Steam. Other copy is via Impulse.

Definitely interested in STALKER bundle, but is this the best price for it? Also, how do I apply the mod to the game (workshop)?

Actually, I'm not too sure what Stalker is about. Is it like Fallout where you essentially travel around from mission to mission, or is it much more linear?

I can't believe I'm entertaining buying Thief 1 and 2 again......
Anyone able to comment on whether these two Steam Versions will run on Windows 7? The game info doesn't say.

On the fence for Fortune Summoners
Liked Recettear, but disliked Chantelise

Most reviews say hard controls, okay story, bad system (dungeons/revives)
The full game plus DLC went F2P a few weeks ago.
Actually AOEO was designed from the ground-up as a microtransaction-based F2P strategy MMO. See here: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/age-of-empires-online-launches-this-fall/.

There were and are premium and pro civilization packs as well as cosmetics and "boosters" available for sale. Most of these items are now available to buy using Empire Points, a new in-game currency earned by playing the game. See here: http://www.ageofempiresonline.com/en/articles/blog-20120711.

The game is a decent mashup of RTS and MMO. It's not really Age of Empires IV, but if you've played III then the capital city mechanic will be very familiar to you. The only significant downside (if you don't mind the somewhat cartoonish graphics) is that most quests will take at least a half-hour to complete (often longer), so you need to be aware of the time you have when you load it up.
there is still stuff you pay for (Civilization packs). You can try to earn them in game but you might die of old age first.

This stuff on sale is a total waste, cosmetic crap.
= opinion

 • The Pen of Herodotus: The premiere historian of the ancient world owns a bunch of Cows, Sheep, and Goats—9, to be specific—and for some reason he's unable to keep them in their pen. So they wander around your Capital City, visiting your buildings, eating, and conversing with your citizens. Yes, conversing. Or at least the citizens talk to them; who knows if they talk back. Available only with this offer.
 • Storage: The 24-item 'Grand Warehouse' gives you more space to store your gear, materials, and loot. And possibly other things.
 • Exotic Vanity Gear: Impress your friends and confuse your enemies. Receive 9 pieces of gear in total, including 3 Vanity Helms, 3 Vanity Shields, and 3 Vanity Weapons of the Tiki, Samurai, and Prehistoric varieties.
 • Consumables: 5 'Heroic Aid' Empire Consumables. For those times when everything on the map needs to die. Not available for purchase within the game.
As you can see some of this is cosmetic but the consumables and item storage have actual in-game value.

I know I'm repeating myself but perhaps my question wasn't clear before. I already own Napoleon, Medieval, and Rome base games. The pack would be a good deal but I'd like to know if anyone knows if I can gift the duplicates.

You can't.
So is the indie bundle worth it if already have zombie driver?

and

Super meat boy yes or no?
Super Meat Boy is one of the best platformers this gen for sure. Each level is micro though, like 20 seconds long. But tough as nails.

The format would actually work best as an iOS game, but you NEED a controller for this as input has to be super responsive and lightning fast

I would really like to get into this game but for some reason, the 360 controller on my Mac just doesn't work with this game. The inputs are completely JACKED and impossible. I could load up Windows but I am usually too lazy :(

i missed the humble bundle deal before so im individually buying the games on the list as it goes on sale... bastion check., limbo check, psychonauts check.. now super meat boy. yay!

In the same boat. I'm curious as to whether Diplomacy is worth the 5 bones by itself.

For those on the fence about SoaSE in general, I'd say "jump in." It's not at all inaccessible and it's pretty fun. Bear in mind it is kind-of a "slow-paced" RTS: not a "let's zerg the AI" kind of game, generally, but still faster than the glacial pace of most TBS games.

From http://supermeatboy.com/115/Things_every_Mac_user_should_know___/ :

"Custom Controls:

Update:

Due to an unfixable bug in the Mac version, we don't support 360 controllers on Mac. I do apologize for this. The bug is unfixable because I can't again risk killing everyones game with another update. The game incorrectly assumes that no more than 12 buttons will ever be on a controller. This is mainly true, however Mac controller drivers map the JoyHAT as 4 different buttons it seems, which makes it so you can't map B X and Y properly. This also messes up the start and select buttons. It was a mistake on my part. The bug could be fixed, however there is a significant risk that fixing it will break other things to the point where its unplayable with the keyboard which we would then have to go in and fix and start a whole new cycle of updating the game / breaking something in an update, rinse, repeat. I am sorry about this, do know that it is fixed in our new engine for game 2. Also, non Xbox 360 controllers appear to work fine. Joy2Key esque programs may remedy this issue, but it has not been tested by me. Again, we are sorry about this."

Having bought Crysis 2, Fear 3, Deus Ex HR and the orcs must die DLC I'm only hoping for a better deal on Arma 2. That, the DayZ mod, plus my backlog will probably keep me content untill the winter sales.

How is the storyline in Thief deadly shadows? I'm interested in getting just deadly shadows instead of the collection since I've never played a thief game before.
picked up need for speed and the binding of isaac DLC.

everyone think jade empire thoughts, maybe we'll get lucky :)
Oh I'm thinking those thoughts all right. I own the game on disc for both PC and 360, but would throw down 4 bucks to have it on steam.

That being said, Sins Trinity and the last 2 Stalker games for me today.
