CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

get old world blues, it is the best.
Is this is a good deal on Witcher 2, or would I be better off waiting since I haven't played the first one yet?
it's been $10 already, it will hit $5 or less soon enough.

Yeah, I voted for shogun for you as well. Since I don't care which game wins, why not?
Just get 2. All of the campaigns and characters from 1 have been imported into 2 anyway.
Thanks! I will just grab left 4 dead 2, now im wondering if i should get the witcher 2, im getting the witcher 1, but... i dont know if the witcher 2 will hit 75% on this sale, or i would have to wait till the winter sale, aaa decisions, someone help me out on this one, lol!

Are you going to play it in the next 5 months? It will definitely be cheaper this winter.

I don't count Nuvem. As far as I am concern the lowest it has legitimately been is $13 on GOG if you already own Witcher 1.

First off, SORRY in advance if some variation of my question has been asked before, but there are a lot pages to wade through right now, so I'll just go for it:
I've never played a Fallout game before, but I'm kinda tempted to give them a try, I was wondering if anyone would recommend starting with Fallout 3: GOTY or going straight to New Vegas, also if it's worth coughing up an extra $5 for all the New Vegas DLC? I know it's a pretty good deal, I just don't know if I'll ever have time to finish the standard game, let alone get to the DLC. Plus like many of you I've built up a pretty large backlog that I'm not sure when I'll be able to get to (I haven't played a PC game in like 8 years because my hardware's always been antiquated, I'm buying games on the assumption I'll get a new set up in the next 3-6 months). Thanks for any advice!

That price point isn't really a deal. Basically pay $10 for a copy of Witcher 2 on Nuuvem and apply for the GoG backup. The key they give you might or might not work with steam. And if it does work, it's a Russian copy.

Still having trouble getting the Add-A-Freind achievement to register. Last damned one to complete that badge. If someone could help a brother out with an add to try and get it to work, would be appreciated.

I would say NV is the superior game, but there is just some magic about FO3...

Had you the time, I would recommend 3.. but if you don't even think you have the time to finish it, jump to NV.
Got Witcher 2 off GoG.com for $13 bucks already. Really tempted to pull trigger on Gratuitious Space Battles and Krater. Anyone played those two?
I've played only very little of Gratuitious Space Battles. I unfortunately skipped the long tutorial (I believe it's from 30min-1hr long) because I wanted to just complete the achievement (glad there are no sale achievements this time around). It was pretty fun from what I played. It's like an advanced form of Asteroids. You can control a ship, or other ships in your fleet. Various events happen through out and you do pretty much whatever you like in a sense, like the old GTA games. Though to fully appreciate the game, you NEED to go through the tutorial.

Mulled over the Alan Wake bundle, and even though I'm technically double-dipping (borrowed a friend's 360 copy last year) that's a fucking generous deal for everything released in that series so far. So I guess it's just New vegas ultimate, and alan wake complete for me.
Edit: Also, I'm FORCING myself to go through my backlog and am currently playing a copy of Broken Sword I got free from gog.com It's a pretty good adventure game, but I think the feeling I'll get from uninstalling it will be the most satisfying feeling of all.

few things live up to the high one gets from uninstalling and moving a game to the "completed" category.

I unconsciously read that in Bender's voice. Seriously.

Also, can you compare Alan Wake to a similar game? Recommend it?

I'm on the fence about this one.
Are you going to play it in the next 5 months? It will definitely be cheaper this winter.
I think i will get the first one only, i have a huge backlog+ ps3 backlog. So i will just play the witcher 1 later, and i will probably like it so then i will just have to wait a few weeks for winter sale, i guess.

Picked up Fallout 3 GOTY. I'll for another sale and a price decrease for Fallout: New Vegas.

I notice that there's an "Ultimate Edition" of New Vegas that's considerably cheaper than the base game +DLC. Does this mean not all of the DLC is included in it? Or is it just a good deal?

That's not Gratuitous Space Battles.

The game is about building a fleet for each scenario/mission for various formations of alien crafts or external conditions. You can customize each ship with weapon/armor/crew configurations. You have a certain amount of credits each mission to build your fleet. Ships with better configurations cost more, and you only have a certain number of pilots. You can unlock better add-ons for ships and additional ship hulls with honor points (something like that) that you get when you complete a mission.

Once you place ships and give them orders, you sit back and watch everything unfold. There is nothing to do besides watch your fleet duke it out. The only option you have is to admit defeat if it gets bad enough.

The game is really more about the strategy and fleet building that the actual fighting.

I think the game's strengths lie in having a great atmosphere and good writing. The story is super interesting and while the combat isn't stellar by any means, it's decent enough that I could still really enjoy playing through the game's story. If you like spooky Stephen King stories like I do, I think you'll enjoy the game. A gameplay video might not properly capture the "feel" you get from the story. I've heard that American Nightmare is like 70% combat, 30% story so that's a bummer but I want the complete story so I'm getting everything.
The game is really more about the strategy and fleet building that the actual fighting.
Sounds like my kind of game. Good thing I have it through one of my indie bundles.

i think he's thinking of SPAZ. that definitely had an achievement during the winter sale.

I had a lot of issues with FO3--it was the glitchier of the two by far for me. I prefer the story in FO3 but I wasn't able to finish it. There were also several occasions where I just felt that the world was so open I had no idea where I needed to go next to advance the story.

F:NV was still glitchy and would occasionally do a magic CTD, but it was a much better game than I expected it to be (although I didn't have the opportunity to obliterate a settlement with a nuclear bomb as in FO3).

You'll probably see a few games between now that then (especially if you have ps+). If you're anything like my you underestimate how long it takes to finish a game.

Yes NV Ultimate Edition has all the DLC. It's a good deal if you don't have the game or even just don't have any of the DLC yet.

 • Alan Wake Franchise - $39.99 $9.99 - heard they're damn good!
 • Amnesia: The Dark Descent - $19.99 $4.99 - Personally, I don't think it's really scary, but it does involve some interest unique puzzle solving. A spooky version of myst really.

 • Fallout: New Vegas - $19.99 $4.99 - DAMN GOOD GAME. Screw the $4.99 for the regular version. Go with the $9.99 Ultimate Edition as the 5 DLC is WELL WORTH IT. You can get the regular version, but you'll poop the bed brown when you realize how much you missed out on.
 • Indie Bundle VIII - $9.99 - A decent selection, but wait for the Indie Game Bundies in the future for similar packs for $1-$5 - see this thread here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2544489 Humble Indie Bundle (HIB), Indie Gala, and Indie Royal tend to be the best. Especially HIB
Btw, that 3-pack Thief Collection is still on sale for a bit.

So I've heard a lot of hate for Jurassic Park and a lot of praise for Walking Dead, but just from what I've seen, their gameplay styles look pretty similar. Am I completely off-base with that assumption? Or does JP get more hate than it deserves? (Or for that matter, does Walking Dead get more praise than it deserves?)

I may just be hard to impress when it comes to single-players, but from what I've played in Walking Dead it's okay. I think it may be a little too hyped up, but that may just be because I went in with high expectations and, not to mention, payed $15. Don't get me wrong, it's entertaining, and the alternative possibilities pique my curiosity, but I have to be in the mood to play it (which means I won't be most of the time). (That was just acquired from just a little over 2 hours of gameplay, btw, so I could have a change of heart any time during the story like I did with BioShock.)

I have yet to play The Walking Dead. I've finished Jurassic Park, and I don't think it's that bad. It is a QTE game with an okay storyline, a bit too generic perhaps, not many surprises or even wit, just a regular disaster movie plot. I don't mind the 6 bucks I've spent on it. From what I've read of Walking Dead, Jurassic Park has pretty much the same mechanics, but lacks the engaging characters, tension and choices that seem to lift WD to another category.

I've played both and enjoy the Walking Dead much more. In Jurassic Park you can't even really walk around, it just gives you different areas to look around. The story is pretty good, and lets you see more of what was going on during the first movie. The gameplay was horrible though. The Walking Dead's story is excellent, the gameplay is similar to Jurassic Park in with QTEs however you can walk around a little. Also, the desicions you make in Walking Dead are supposed to change the story up, so we will see how that goes. I highly recommend Walking Dead, Jurassic Park I would only recommend if you want the story cause the gameplay is atrocious.

Sidequest: Sell me on today's indie pack. I miss Wing Commander, so I'm in for Sol Exodus. Is it worth paying twice as much, plus an extra penny, for the rest?

If not, I might be safe today!

Haha. It's just minor things that bug me. Lagging cut scenes, small bugs, and occasionally I get frustrated with the main character when he invokes a tone which I didn't intend when picking one of the options. Yup... kinda hard to put myself in his position when the options sometimes don't imply a tone, so I immediately assume it would be the one I would add, then irking me when in it's not (ex: being aggressive when I didn't even intend to be). Shit like that.

Bad news everybody, I barely realized I didn't win Coconut Queen on steamgifts.

Are we talking JP or LA Noire?

There's a very annoying bug in the beginning, when characters repeat what they've just said, but other than that I had no other problems with the game, like I experienced on some points of Back to the Future or Sam and Max.
Bad news everybody, I barely realized I didn't win Coconut Queen on steamgifts.
Fixed that for you.

Avoid Jurassic Park. I mean it might be worth $2-5 if you are REALLY interested in the story (although the story isn't even that great in my opinion), but its just painful to get through.

However, I absolutely LOVED the walking dead. I could see how someone might think they are similar but the gameplay/presentation decisions they put in Walking Dead make it feel like an entirely different (and better) game.

Actually, Walking Dead. I barely started LA Noire, so I'll probably have that problem as well during interrogations.

Do it. It's good. By all accounts it's easily the best of the 3 Carpe Fulgar games and it doesn't go on sale on Steam very often, only twice a year.
