CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

It was on sale yesterday
Hey, guys, I just found this website that has lots of games on sale.

You all should check it out; They have Coconut Queen for less than $2.50!
Everyone should have coconut queen on their wishlist.

I have 10 bucks in Steam credit left, barring any crazy impulse buys (like my desire to buy the batman collection after seeing dark knight rises) I have just one decision to make.

-Fallout New Vegas GOTY- or -Driver and Far Cry 2-

You know its not. lol. Save yourself the trouble. They sell you VPN keys which they tell you in their FAQ is not illegal to activate, but they fail to mention it is against Steam Terms of Service.

Its a russian key seller site, so....use your best judgement
Arma II just isn't gonna go on sale for more than 20% is it?
And you know I looked it up this morning. It was 15 dollars in January. It's a bit insulting that a free community developed dlc pushed up the price so much.

edit: 15 for the combined operations that is.

It was also 15 in may I believe from Amazon. I personally bit when they had that 20 dollar sale a week ago on Amazon.

i wouldn't be surprised if it hits a daily deal for 33% off on the last day of the sale.
Oh, I think it's safe to say that there are tribes of aboriginal peoples in the Amazon who have never had contact with the outside world and have no computers who nevertheless have a copy of Dungeon Defenders for every man, woman, and child in their societies.
I don't.. is it THAT good?

From what I've read, DayZ was done by one of the Arma II developers so it's not exactly "community" developed.
im thinking of just caving in for Arma already, im getting disgusted at steam now for repeating sales over and over again
First rule of steam club.

Even if that is true it's not exactly official either. Regardless it's like Blizzard jacking up the price because of DOTA. I can understand why they would want to keep it high it's just a bit frustrating.

Had $20 of dying BB Reward Zone coupons, so I got Driver SF + R3 for my PS3 for $14. That's Steam level discount on physical games. Love it.
im getting magicka and dungeon defenders collection, i hope the dlc of both games is worth it.
Alot of DLC for both those games is cosmetic (most of it) but if you enjoy the games then you should have fun with it.

Chances are it's not being discounted further. Even when they do discount it is on a limited basis (amazon sold out both times). But it won't hurt to wait 3 more days.

I would love to see Arma II put up as a community choice vote. I have no interest in buying it, I just want to see how badly it destroys the competition.

I'm in for Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet.
DLC worth it at all?
Yes, I agree with the posters above. If you like the game you'll want the DLC.
How's Far Cry? Better off just sticking with the sequel or is it also worth getting?
Far Cry is better than the sequel, in my opinion. Somehow Ubisoft thought it would make Far Cry better to pack it full of annoying things and prettier graphics.

Is splinter cell deluxe edition worth the extra 1.25? If this question has been asked before then I apologize.

Also, what's the best way to check in on steam sales on the go (and able to purchase stuff)? Is there an app for steam?

I am just surprised by the amount of press the game received that there has not been a clone-ish mod announced using another mod-friendly game like.

Someone posted an article to a retail game in alpha stage that is quite similar. Somewhere in this thread, though I'm at work and don't have time to search. Thinking in the first 30 some pages.

The Amazon sale didn't have steam keys. Theirs come directly from the publisher while the steam keys come from the developer and the publisher won't let amazon have them. So there's that to consider. Arma CO was even on sale 2 days ago from amazon, but no steam keys either and still sold out within a day.

ya why isn't there a Skyrimz mod? I'd love to Fus Ro Dah the horde.
I think you point out the problem: the indie bundles already exposed most of the good indies. Back before the bundles, you could have discoveries. Now, that doesn't exist anymore.
The question is, what games should they be exposing? The only suggestions that I've read that haven't been promoted are Legend Of Fae and Spectromancer. I haven't seen too many suggestions beyond those.
That being said, there have been a decent amount of indies in this sale. Beyond what you've mentioned, we got Vessel, Tiny and Big, Krater, and Botanicula. Problem is, many of us sit here and wonder if we should buy or see if they eventually come in an indie bundle. (hell, Botanicula was introduced in an indie bundle.)
Well those are two indies that got some mention here just because people here happened to stumble on them accidentally but I absolutely believe there are others.

Hell I will even say it that Coconut Queen actually is pretty good. Even though I went into it for the shits and grins expecting a train wreck because of the ridiculous over the top description, it's one of the better casual town management-lite sort of games I've come across.

I guess there's also that whole 'Big Fish is for girls and Steam is for boys and never the two shall meet' sort of thing too. I don't mean 100% of the time of course, but there is a perception that the casual crowd is female and doesn't hang out at Steam and that the hardcore crowd is male and does.

While I think there's a lot of me too-ism among the casual and mobile games, there's some decent stuff too. I think there's gotten to be some hidden gems among the casual stuff and the line between casual and indie is kind of blurry. Even Amazon has some stuff most would consider 'indie' under 'casual'.

Anyway, kind of going off on a tangent, but my point is I think there are games out there that all of us would like but don't know about but the problem is finding them. It does seem like the same few devs get in indie or Steam bundles or get coverage on blogs like RPS over and over but the rest don't.

Beyond getting recommendations from others I don't know that there is much else we can do. I guess you could buy a bunch of cheap games as a crap shoot and hope to get a least a couple of good ones but that's hardly the most efficient way.

Hopefully Steam Greenlight will help with this sort of thing and bring some more games to light besides just though from devs in the in crowd.
Curses yet again, no deep discount of Civ 5 Gods and Kings
This. I was disappointed to see Gods and Kings for Civ5 wasn't $15 or less. Same with Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion since they are both expansions and not completely new games. Maybe they will both hit that under $20 magic mark for me during Christmas.

I tend to buy my digital games from one of three digital venues: Steam, Amazon, and GOG. While it is a deal breaker for some not to have it on Steam, it wasn't for me. I did purchase it from Amazon during their sale 2 days ago.

I still firmly believe it will hit the dailies on the last day, for all of the more patient people out there, tho for who discount I cannot say. I just know I will probably not regret my purchase just to get a few early hours of gaming in with my buddies.

So we can assume that's pretty much it correct?
I would guess that tomorrow would be reserved for bestsellers of each daily, and those sales would end at noon of the 22nd.

So no ARMA II. Sigh.
Anyone ever play the Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony game that's part of today's Indie Bundle? Been looking for a good Shmup on Steam.
It's a decent shoot 'em up. Unfortunately the only way to progress is play higher and higher difficulty as you go.
Is all the dlc worth it for magica?
The Stars are Left probably is, it's more of a full chapter / adventure. The rest are, in my opinion, skippable. Vietnam, for example, is more or less a single map. It sounds like Other Side of the Coin is too, which is regrettable.

Depends on how much you like Challenge Maps, I guess. I liked the story mode.
I have a guest pass for RO2 when I just bought it now. You can have it if you want to try the game out today and see if you want to buy it.
Sounds good. Do you know how this works? You get a certain number of hours to play and it expires or something? Anyway, PM me. Thanks!

Newbie steam member here guys. Is there a way i can see all the giveaways in the CAG Steam Group? i think i saw a link here somewhere of an add-on? can someone post it again. thank you.

Quick question; do the publisher bundles ever get any cheaper, like a last day super sale sort of thing? I'm trying to decide if I want to just buy Fallout New Vegas UE, or wait and see if the Bethesda pack gets cheaper.
I don't.. is it THAT good?
My humorous reference to the ubiquity of DD sales. . . .

If you enjoy multiplayer tower defense games, that's basically what Dungeon Defenders is. You can play it single-player but if you do you'll find the levels are tediously long to complete and I got burned out pretty quickly. If you have friends or are willing to pay prostitutes to help you play, by all accounts it's an excellent multiplayer experience. As a single-player game, though, it's about as much fun as sleeping on an active volcano.

I have Magicka but haven't played it. You didn't ask but my understanding is that it's actually pretty similar to DD in that it's apparently a moderately entertaining SP experience and a very fun multiplayer experience (allegedly).

Historically, no. Whatever the price of the publisher packs is at the beginning of the sale is what they will be at the end.

Nope, Publisher packs (at least in all prior winter/summer sales) never go on sale as a daily. Just an upfront steep discount at the start of the sale the last throughout.

are the dlc for magicka and dungeon defenders worth it? I dont know if should get the complete collection of both games, or just a few dlcs.....decisions decisions..

You guys that want Gods and Kings on sale just be patient. It's Steamworks so you won't have to wait until the winter sale for another sale on it. Between all the other DD retailers someone will have it on a decent sale between now and the winter sale. Probably multiple times.
Quick question; do the publisher bundles ever get any cheaper, like a last day super sale sort of thing? I'm trying to decide if I want to just buy Fallout New Vegas UE, or wait and see if the Bethesda pack gets cheaper.
Publisher packs don't hit daily deals or anything like that. One thing to consider is that Quakecon is coming up, and Steam generally puts a truly complete pack together with all id/Bethesda games along with other related pack sales. If all you want is New Vegas, pick it up. But if you're interested in the whole back catalog, you might get a better package in a couple weeks. Worst case scenario, you wait until the winter sale for the publisher packs to come back.

Dungeon Defenders is a Tower Defense Action-RPG where you must save the land of Etheria from an Ancient Evil! Create a hero from one of four distinct classes to fight back wave after wave of enemies by summoning defenses and directly participating in the action-packed combat!

Most of it is cosmetic and/or minor in both cases but a few add actual content. It's been discussed a lot before and I know this thread moves crazy fast but I think for that sort of "Worth it?" stuff people are better off just browsing the Steam forum for that particular game. I can almost guarantee you someone else has asked that before and it's been answer there multiple times.

not trying to be rude here but, at least two people in the past couple pages off their two cents about the dlc....
