CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

The sale started strong but really fell apart over the last week ... basically everything felt like a repeat of the stuff put on sale during the first week and earlier flash deals ... and some of the things that ended up going on sale like Arma weren't really marked off at the expected Steam seasonal sale discount.

All in all, not an awful summer sale but it could have been better ... I missed some of the meta-game stuff, badges don't really do it for me without an additional incentive behind them and the flash deals were cool in concept, but not when it was the exact same stuff that was being run as dailies. I guess it's great if you missed a deal but doesn't make the sale all that exciting with the repetition.

OK... i gotta ask.. what the hell is with the several pages of ranting about Coconut Queen.. is there some inside joke or is this game actually fun? I cant even tell what the hell it is o_O

i'm seriously hoping GalCiv2 wins... i've been eyeing that for some time. Used to love Reach for the Stars back in the day (many moons ago).

oh.. other than my Coconut princess question I was wondering about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

I have it for Xbox and its my favorite game on that system by far. I never did play it on the PC. Is it any better or different? Is it worth picking up? Its only like 3 bucks it seems. Id prefer a hard copy but for that price i may be worth snagging if theres any differences. I remember there was a patch that added some DLC to the xbox version but i no longer have it =(

Enhanced graphics, and the possibility for mods - definitively get it on the PC.

I didn't even know they have mods for KOTOR when I picked it up earlier this week. Any particular ones that are particularly fun?

And wow, Secret of the Magic Crystals just crept up in the Top under $5 charts from #15 to #10!

Who's doing this, and why isn't Coconut Queen on the boards yet...

They mean more like someone hacking the vote or using some sort of automated way to make one game accumulate a ton of votes.

The DLC is included with the PC version.

Never played on Xbox so I can't speak for differences control wise.

Some people have reported problems running it on newer systems. I didn't have any problems turning on vsync didn't fix.

If you'd prefer a hard copy though a collection was just released a few days ago with KOTOR 1 & 2 for $20.

I wasn't aware of mods either. Im assuming you can use mods with steam games and that they act just like a real copy?

The only thing holding me back is that a retail copy is relatively cheap. About 10-15 bucks it seems. But for less than 3 i can get a working copy as well. I guess i can just snag the steam version and if I really love it i can get a real copy. 2.50 is less than afriggin soda.

Good to know the DLC is on the PC. That may be the selling point right there. KOTOR 2 is a massive pile of shit. I couldn't care less about that unfinished mess. Good to know theres a collection though in case i do want a retail copy of 1. Im not concerned about problems since right now im on an old system i build back in 2004 or so. Ive been using it since my laptop died.

Anyone played the PC vs Xbox? Im curious if it plays any differently. I.E. how dragon age was more tactical on the PC, with more pauses in the battle
HA! I didn't buy any indie games cause I'm broke! Erm...
Aww, I feel bad. I should have picked up more steam keys from you. Maybe paid you another .45 cents. ;)
I'm going to miss this sale when it's gone.

I read your article/visited your site, and you definitely got a new reader. Dealing with moderate anxiety myself, I definitely appreciate what you're doing. You never realize that there is that "type of community" until you visit a website that is catered specifically for it. It's a pretty awesome idea. I'll also reccommend panicgamer to my sister who suffers from panic attacks and of course is a pc gamer. :)

Also Civ. III, possibly the worst $1.79 I've ever spent. Seriously, I played 4 hrs straight and I'm totally addicted. I've just ruined my life haven't I?
...bummer about Ys. I bet some people are going to wake up angry.
I won't say angry but I will say disappointed. I voted Ys and thought it was a sure thing. I'm disappointed that KOTOR won. That game has been part of more deals (flash and daily) than any I can think of. If people missed it the numerous times it was available at 2.49, it's their own fault at this point.
Was surprised to not get the voted on every day of the sale achievement thing today. Anyone else?
I don't think it'll count for today until the vote after 10am PST since that seems to be the "start" of the day for Steam.

I also haven't got it, but I think for steam purposes new day is starting after change of daily deals. So we need still need to vote once to get it

Ninja'd so many times.

*yawn* Check Steam. *grumble grumble* Vote GalaCivII. Go to flea market.

I'm thinking, brand recognition aside, KOTOR probably garnered a lot of votes from people blindly hoping that maybe this time, despite all previous, the discount would extend to other Star Wars games.
I was under the assumption that a new "day" is when the new daily sale items go live.
Likewise. If they went strictly by calendar date, there would inevitably be people who missed the first twelve hours of the sale and lost out on the badge without realizing it.

You can mod a Steam copy of KOTOR just as you can mod Skyrim, Crusader Kings II, Torchlight and others. The only difference is the location of the files you need to move stuff to.

I own both KOTOR on Xbox and PC. I played the Xbox copy on my 360 and recall some audio issues from time to time but that's a somewhat common issue when playing Xbox games on it.

The PC version I ran into some issues on my laptop. Some audio issues at times and towards the end of the game, there were graphical issues in one of the levels and it kept crashing for me. It may have gone away if I progressed further but I had gotten bored of the game and stopped playing.

Despite this, I highly recommend it. KOTOR has one of the best, if not THE best, plot in a game I've ever played and it's my favorite Star Wars game.

Hmm, you can try to give it a second chance and install the TSLRCM Mod for kotor 2.;) It's a restauration mod which uses the unused material left on the discs by Obsidian (Hey, you, Lucasarts, I hate you forever for this mess).

Personally, Kotor 2 (yes, this messed unfinished release) > Kotor 1.
Kreia, best character forever. :bouncy:

So today is the last day?

Sale went REALLY Bad after a couple days. Started AMAZING, but then just became rehashes. Would've loved to see BFBC2, Mass Effect 1 and 2, COD 4 and so many other games. Oh Well.

Is the Next sale the Christmas Sale or do they do one for Thanksgiving as well?

Kinda late to the party here, but I agree with these guys. It has been my assumption throughout that your vote for the day only counts as a vote on that day if you place it after the new deals go live. If you wanna get the achievement ASAP, wait to vote on the customer choice deal until after 1PM EST (10AM PST).

All this talk of KOTOR 2 has me wishing it would come to Steam, especially knowing it can be modded up a bit. I'd buy it in a heartbeat
assuming the appropriate retail price plus Steam sale ;)

The next big sale like this is Christmas, but they've done a Halloween sale before as well.

There will always be smaller opportunities, such as Daily Deals, Developer Weeks, Black Friday and Halloween events, etc., to grab games on Steam for good prices. CAG's will always be around to announce those developments, as well.

Admittedly, after this particular sale, I may not be so quick to say "I'll wait for the next Summer/Winter Sale." Not to say this sale hasn't been great, but I believe there have been larger price-slashes in the past.

Is there a reason LucasArts hasn't released it on Steam and other digital services?

EDIT:
I thought KOTOR 2 was pretty good back when a bit after it was released, until the last 1/3rd that just felt so rushed...

It's less the prices and more the lack of variety. The flash deals were so under-utilized versus their potential. Instead of having a pool of games that can be either, why not have the dailies be the typical AAA games, and the flash sales be smaller, older, or indie games that don't have a chance of making the dailies? That way, there's a constant rotation of new games hitting a bunch of markets.

Just a reminder: If you're going for the badges, wait until after the sale changeover today to vote in the next community vote. I already voted in the current batch early this morning and can confirm that it did not earn that last badge.

Pretty much this ^ The flash sales are a good idea, but were plagued by too much repetition.

On a semi-related note, still kicking myself that I missed the Unreal Deal Pack flash sale, but to be fair, it happened overnight and I was sleeping at the time  Hope it gets knocked back to that $9.99 sweet spot again today.

Why are smaller games only given 8 hours while big games are given 36 hours under your system?

Doesn't seem fair

They do a Halloween sale, a Black Friday sale, and THEN the giant Christmas/New Years/Holiday 2012 Sale.
More people want the big games. It's not really about fairness, it's about giving people what they want.
The problem with that is that I don't think the developers see it that way. I imagine some were hesitant to agree to only be flash sales since they wanted more spotlight for their games, which is why we have so many repeats that have shown up as dailies as well.

That's exactly what I wished flash sales had been. Not complaining or saying I didn't get a great new backlog this sale, but I'd have really loved to see a better variety of older games. Flash sales would've been perfect for that.

If I'd still been on my old computer this sale, I wouldn't have been able to buy much at all.
More people want the big games. It's not really about fairness, it's about giving people what they want.
That's not true.

Look at the top sellers right now, you have to go to number 12 to see the first game recently released that people are buying.

As for big games? Out of the top sellers right now MAYBE 25% are big games.
Can someone recommend some adventure games that's not Dreamfall, Monkey Island, or made by Telltale?
Okay, late to the party so I might be repeating what others have suggested:

Ben There, Dan That & Time Gentlemen Please (Not the strongest on the list, but it's only a buck during the sale)
The Blackwell Games
Broken Sword Trilogy
Lucas Arts Pack (Dig and Loom are from the classic Lucas Arts days, if you enjoyed the original Monkey Islands)
Machinarium
Syberia (everyone's recommended this already)
Whispered World (in my backlog, but oh my god it's beautiful.)

Not on steam:

Out of Order
