CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/91wob/faqrules-and-guidelines

I've just gone through the 20+ pages that have sprouted up while I was sleeping and I've noticed quite a number of bundle keys showing up. Individual bundle keys are NOT ALLOWED. This rule is not really enforced now unless someone reports the giveaway, but the mods are working on a method that will ban/suspend any member with too many bundle-key looking giveaways. Just be warned, I would hate for any CAG to be suspended because he/she did not know about this rule.
Now would there be any way for them to just disable any contributor status for those keys? Like you could still give them away but would not get anything counted towards your contributor status? I just ask because per the terms of the bundles I don't think you are not allowed to give them away and some people would just like for someone else to have a game they don't think they'll play. Making it so you get no contributor status with these keys would probably eliminate the abuse and allow those who just want to give them away to do so.

Damn coconut queen, all the giveaways I want to join is on Brawny Gents and Coconut Queen group.
So I'm guessing most people will go into hibernation till Winter. What would you guys consider the best deal for Steam Summer Sale.

Personally I think these were the best deals...
1. Alan Wake
2. Saints Row the Third Collection (didn't buy it, but I can recognize it's a good deal)
3. Fallout New Vegas Ultimate

Just for clarification, this means that, say, my Nuclear Dawn code from one of the bundles a while back is NOT valid for trading on Steam Gifts?

Because I was thinking about throwing it up there, since I really have little interest in it myself. Along with some other random bundle keys I have hanging around I probably won't ever use.

I was relieved when the summer sale ended. I went $15 over budget (eff you, Valve!) Then, I got home and Jade Empire is -75%?!?!? Well, eff you, again, Valve. Now, I've got a buck and some change left in my Steam wallet. Probably better this way...
I just want to say I've notice a lot of new people contributing the the conversation and even doing their own giveaways although they haven't been here long at all. Thanks. You guys rock!

I hope that some of you will stick around even though things will be significantly slower now.*

I think I will try to be around more than I used to.
I've been a CAG here for a few years and don't bother to comment much. (Although when I do, it's usually to try to help someone.)

I hadn't been doing all that much PC gaming lately, mostly on consoles, but after getting SR3 and a few others I realized I'd been missing my PC for gaming (and that I had a whole bunch of humble bundle & other PC games that I bought an promptly forgot about).

Now if I could only find a cheap audio card capable of outputting 5.1 through S/PDIF or optical I'd be a really happy PC gamer again (I got rid of my analog computer speakers when I moved - had no room for them and the HT speakers at the new place). Having surround sound on my PC will definitely make things better.

Oh! I had asked a question a few days ago, but it got buried. Is there any way to filter steamgifts to only show certain group giveaways?

Take my admin rights away. Seriously. I am too much of a softee and it is getting out of control.

Also can I ask that people please don't post BGCQ giveaways here? It encourages beggars trying to get into the group. Can anyone post group announcements or just admins?

There's got to be a better way to announce the giveaways just to people in the group. If all else fails maybe an email list?

I feel like we need a 3rd even more private group. I fail at being an admin. Sorry.
Sometime before the next sale, I think we'll do a member review or something.
Definitely, I made a post for my idea for this process on the changes announcement.
Great giveaway. I think we should only post BGCQ giveaways on the Steam page as to not encourage begging/division.
As someone who isn't in the group, that'd be appreciated, as the temptation to ask for an invite is fairly large, given the nice giveaways you guys are having. But I'd also ask, is there a set of guidelines to gain entry into the group for those of us who aren't? Because while I wasn't a huge contributor to the discussions, I did chime in occasionally (Prison Tycoon!), and have been fairly active in the Steam threads for the past year or two.

Exactly my thoughts - as noted above, i have a few keys lying around that I'm never going to use, and would rather give them away. SteamGifts seems like the perfect place for that, otherwise I have to throw them into the Master Trading forum, and that place seems... frustrating. I know it means well, but it never feels like it accomplishes anything to post there.

So should Steam have put up a game that was already on the Summer Sale? I'm sure people will complain about that too. People will always complain.

Although I can't speak for them. I think their group requires...

1. Owning Coconut Queen game
2. Devoting yourself to Coconut Queen
3. Regular contributor to CAG and giveaways
So should Steam have put up a game that was already on the Summer Sale? I'm sure people will complain about that too. People will always complain.
I think part of the complaints is that:

1) Jade Empire hasn't gone on sale in YEARS (or so it feels like)
2) Jade Empire goes on sale during the summer sale for 50% off - people rejoice!
3) Summer sale ends, and Jade Empire goes on sale for 75% off - people revolt!

If they had put it on sale for 75% off during the summer sale, or 50% off today, or even 66% off today, or if they put another game on sale at the same sale price, it wouldn't be an issue. But the fact is, they took a game that rarely sees sales, put it on sale for 50%, and people bought it because they didn't know when the next time it would be on sale was. Subsequently, it was on sale for a better discount THE DAY AFTER the major sale ended, leaving people frustrated and annoyed.

Great marketing strategy, bad PR strategy. Now, likely, people will get over it and forget about it before too long, but there'll always be a little bit of frustration.

I know, because the same thing happened with Psychonauts not too long ago.

Meh, have to admit I got a bit mad with the whole SR:TT fiasco on the last day, but o well, other than that got some good deals.

What I got:

Binding of Isaac DLC
Shoot Many Robots x2
Stacking
SR:TT + Season Pass
Fortune Summoners
Thief Gold and Thief 2
Alan Wake Franchise
Driver SF
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
Batman Franchise
3 DLCs for Dungeon Defenders

Total Cost: ~$84

I was aiming for $75 but wasn't keeping tabs. Good thing I didnt buy anything below 75% off :p
So should Steam have put up a game that was already on the Summer Sale? I'm sure people will complain about that too. People will always complain.
There is a difference of they put up a game from the Summer Sale and here is a game that was on sale really only a few small times during it's lifetime so people grabbed it up based on instinct, and then they put it up for less than what it was offered during the whole Summer Sale.

If I bought Jade Empire at the Summer Sale, I would be pissed right now too. I mean it's not like they just extended the sale of a game by a day, they also punished those who bought it at the Summer Sale one hour before the sale ends which is the rule of Steam.

I think maybe the best group guideline should be "If you qualify, we will invite you, don't ask to be invited." I know that sounds harsh, but the invite requests shouldn't be clogging up this thread. I would recommend a thread explaining the qualifications, but I still think that would invite more begging. Basically its supposed to be a group for regulars so that the people who win the prizes are people we actually interact with and know and respect.

There have been multiple arguments about this on the steamgifts forums. I don't really care either way (I have a bunch of extra bundle keys lying around as well), but it's not really for me to decide. The mods posted that they would be doing "something to be decided" to bundle key gifters, and I thought I would just warn this community before people started getting bans/suspensions.

I know this is late and in poor taste, but I just had to come in and laugh at everyone who bought Jade Empire during the sale.

Serves you right for spending so much on games!
No, now we goto all Half Price Books in our areas and buy all the best stuff before everyone else
They have some PC games there though, mostly casual stuff though but still I have gotten games for a dollar or less there sometimes.
Awesome, Jade Empire for $3.75. I don't see what you all are so angry about. I added Jade Empire to my wishlist with hopes it would go cheaper during the Summer Sale, it didn't, so I never bought it. And now it's $3.75 in daily sale. Huzzah! Winner!
Because it hasn't been on sale for years. It never goes on sale. The Summer Sale is the biggest sale of the year (well it and winter). 99% of the time the cheapest a game will ever go will be on the Summer/Winter sale.

Many of us waited and waited before we pulled the trigger on Jade Empire. They had plenty of opportunities to put it on a flash deal. Lord knows they repeated enough of them. I personally stayed up and waited until all the very last flash deals ended before deciding to buy Jade Empire at 50% off.

A number of us were afraid it would not go on sale again for years and not without reason given the price history. Honestly if you asked me which game I thought would be least likely to be on sale deal of the day today Jade Empire would probably have been number 2 after Kingdoms of Amalur.

I'm not getting how you're not getting how this could upset people. There were some people who literally bough it a few minutes before it went down to 75% off at 50% off.

Oh and to the people who keep saying it's funny that Jade Empire went lower when some people bought it higher. Stop. It's not. I'm serious. Don't be jerks.
Now would there be any way for them to just disable any contributor status for those keys? Well I think part of the problem is those bundles come with DRM free downloads that are meant to give you flexibility. Both the DRM free download and the Steam key are meant only for one single person though, the one who bought it. It's not meant for people to keep the download and gift the key which I think a bunch of people were doing.

Personally I almost never mess with DRM free at all so if I give away a key I don't ever use the download and/or I already have that game on Steam from another source, but given the crowd at Steamgifts I suspect a lot were using it to split up the packs.

I still think there should be somewhere some way we can give away those extra bundle keys without just blindly posting them though.

Even though I bought a lot of games during the sale, I've been putting all my play time into Binding of Isaac. It's actually a bit upsetting to think that such an amazing game went unnoticed by me for so long.

Wow, I suck. I mentioned earlier this morning I was trying to decide between Saints Row 3 and The Walking Dead. Well, not long after that post, I had to go shower and get ready for class.... aaaaand I completely forgot to actually BUY the game (I had decided on SR3). And now it's back to full price. Good job, self!

Oh well, I didn't NEED to spend that money anyway. I can wait. I think.
Submitting Bundles
Users may not submit individual gift from any bundle. This includes either keys for activating the entire bundle, parts of the bundle, or individual keys or giftable items/games. Please do not submit games from bundles while they are on sale to avoid confusion. These giveaways are subject to immediate removal. Members may only submit unused, giftable links of the bundle. Accounts that habitually violate this policy may be suspended until further notice.
I seriously don't follow their distinction. Don't submit keys that come from bundles; I follow but did not know. But are whole bundles in or out?

Edit: so keys for whole bundle=bad, links for whole bundle=good?

Half-Price Books is the best, they carry lots of fantastic adventure games for one. But usually the new stuff they have is of course on the less than desirable end. But they do carry used PC games, and more often than not the CD Keys are not usually associated with Steam yet, and if they are they have a great return policy. I've gotten way better games, but specific to Steam I've gotten 3x copies of The Ship and 2x copies of Prey, $1 or $2 each and all unactivated on Steam.
I personally stayed up and waited until all the very last flash deals ended before deciding to buy Jade Empire at 50% off.
I also diligently waited until the final flash deals before buying Jade Empire. Oh it burns.
Kinda off topic, but does anybody know who cs_451 is on steam? I just logged on to steam and I see that I've been invited on to his/her friends list. I don't wanna click accept until i know who the heck it is.
That's me! That's me! I added a bunch of CAG regulars last night before bed and couldn't stay up to answer PMs. Sorry about that.

I'm not sure how good Steam customer service is, but you guys could always send an email to them. I think your grievance is understandable, and hopefully refundable via steam wallet credit.

While I admit I did laugh a bit about the troll move by Valve, I felt bad for all you guys who bought the game earlier. It was kind of like a laugh for how ridiculous Steam's timing was and not to make fun of the people who had perfectly valid reasons to believe the game wouldn't decrease in price. Hell, I was prepared to wait a year or two in order to buy it on sale and then they threw this curveball into the mix.

Makes sense too. On rare occasion I split up my Indie Royale bundles, but mainly because it's like "Eh, I don't really think I'll ever play this game so let someone else get it on Steam" and when I redeem my Desura code it of course redeems all the games.
I seriously don't follow their distinction. Don't submit keys that come from bundles; I follow but did not know. But are whole bundles in or out?

yeah, this seems odd, as we saw last Christmas sale, people will exploit even the Humble Bundle if there is anything to gain.

I agree and I went recently and they actually had a ton of pretty good stuff. Their prices were not as good as steam, but they had practically the entire EA catalog for $5 to $8 bucks for new games like all the NFS, Medal of Honor, Dragon Age, etc. Had a ton of other stuff. If it wasn't for already owning most and wanting to avoid clutter, I would have bitten.

I was going to just watch people join this Brawny Gents group, but you guys have been so entertaining these past few days I wanted to do a CS:S give away as well and the thought of a lurker winning does not sit well.

So, the question is: does one have to own the lofty Coconut Queen or can I slip in by watching someone else's secret handshake?

Has anyone played Jade Empire with an Xbox 360 controller? I looked around on the Steam forums and several posts seemed to give the impression that it's not as functional as you'd expect. I kinda want to pick it up, but only if I can stand to play it with a controller. Just thought I'd see if any CAGs had any input on this.

The funny thing about giveaways of single keys from the bundles on s.gifts is that their service cannot prove that you gave away a key instead of gift. So if you won't describe in what form you are giving the game it's ok. That's all. They just haven't got tools to detect it.
Even better if you are hosting a group giveaway, because people shouldn't report it, so it will end unnoticed.

What do you mean by lurker? Someone in the CAG group doesn't count?

So this is what I ended up getting from the sale. Way more then I thought I was gonna be getting. Although I didn't really get involved in the CQ discussion, I picked it up just from everyone's recommendations. After only playing 25 mins so far, I must say it is quite entertaining and well worth the couple dollars I spent on it lol.

Can anyone speak to the PC port of Jade Empire? Looks like the Xbox version is through the roof but the PC version seems meh...never played this one so may check it out depending on what you guys say. Thanks!
God I hope it is, I wouldn't have just bought it otherwise.

Oh, goodness, no, that's not what I meant. YOU ALL COUNT. >.> You know, just, not the ones who created account for giveaways.

Well. That was unfortunate phrasing.
I just want to say I've notice a lot of new people contributing the the conversation and even doing their own giveaways although they haven't been here long at all. Thanks. You guys rock!

I hope that some of you will stick around even though things will be significantly slower now.*

some of us are relatively new to Steam on Cag, but have been here a long time for other systems. i used to game only ps3, then got an ipad (post in the ios about new deals a lot).... but I generally only care about Steam during sales because that's the only time i'll ever buy from them. I do sometimes buy codes off people, but anyway, it's harder to be a 'regular' when your gaming budget is rather small.

but i'm trying.

Well you could always do CAG group giveaway plus the added requirement of contribution. I think this limits people from taking advantage of CAG group.

Jade Empire was an auto buy for me at that price, but I'm going to hold off until I see some of you early purchasers get a positive response back from Valve. Solidarity!
