CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

Cool, Jade Empire was on my list of games to buy and I completely forgot about it. Now I come home from work and check Steam, and there it is.
Oh, goodness, no, that's not what I meant. YOU ALL COUNT. >.> You know, just, not the ones who created account for giveaways.

Well. That was unfortunate phrasing.
Then why not just create a new group for those who contribute? I don't think the BGCQ group is the way to do it. You could call it the CAG Contributor group or something like that, and only invite those who are at least somewhat active. Idk, this whole BGCQ just looks like it is getting to a point far from where the creator intended it.

I bought Jade Empire for the 75% off. It really sucks that Valve would pull something like this on those who bought at the tail end of the summer sale. That really stinks.
some of us are relatively new to Steam on Cag, but have been here a long time for other systems. i used to game only ps3, then got an ipad (post in the ios about new deals a lot).... but I generally only care about Steam during sales because that's the only time i'll ever buy from them. I do sometimes buy codes off people, but anyway, it's harder to be a 'regular' when your gaming budget is rather small.

but i'm trying.
Well if Jade Empire, ahem, taught us one thing I suppose it's that sales outside of the big sales can sometimes be cheaper.

I admit it's less exciting getting 1, 2, 3 games on sale a day vs a dozen or so featured ones and thousands of others. More often than not on the daily/midweek/weekend sales you won't fine what you are looking for but once in a while a gem comes a long.

It's just that you have to put up with a bunch of Magicka and Hydrophobia sales in between before you get to those rare gems.
Their profile is private to friends as well.
It is? Oops. Shows you how often I use Steam's Social Networking aspects.

Sorry! Wasn't trying to start a panic, folks!
I think maybe the best group guideline should be "If you qualify, we will invite you, don't ask to be invited." I know that sounds harsh, but the invite requests shouldn't be clogging up this thread. I would recommend a thread explaining the qualifications, but I still think that would invite more begging. Basically its supposed to be a group for regulars so that the people who win the prizes are people we actually interact with and know and respect.
And you must show them your coconuts :p

Still looking over my haul for the sale (not sure if I really want to know) but I think it is safe to say I am close, if not over, my budget of $100. Had some gifting to do.

If you do that then a bunch of people will ask to get in again and you either have to be the mean exclusionary, ellitist seeming person or let everyone in and then sort of defeat the purpose of the thing. It's a fine line.

I guess you can just do a private giveaway and give it to who you want. *shrug*

I like Fox's idea of don't call us, we'll call you though. Like the Dark Brotherhood. :p

Because Coconut Queen was the catalyst of it all.

For some reason the people who talk here all the time just talk and that's it, there's nothing substantial.

With that game and it's discussion we now have a community of people who we like talking to and know from their time on here.

The giveaways were supposed to be like "I know you 2 dozen guys and here's a game have at it" but instead when the free stuff came out people were just in it for the free stuff and not the conversation.
I do sometimes buy codes off people, but anyway, it's harder to be a 'regular' when your gaming budget is rather small.

Most of the summer sale was dominated by a 2.50 game and conversation about the deals, you don't need to buy everything to be part of the group.

Although if you do buy try not to pick the one that gets it's price cut in half the second the sale is over.

Bought Jade Empire. Had 2.5 in my Steam Wallet

From the Summer Sale

Binding of Issac DLC - 1.5 (bought it first day)
Binding of Issac collection - 2.23
Binding of Issac DLC - .74 (gave to a UK friend)
Trine 2 X2 - 3.74 (7.48)
Alan Wake American Nightmare - 3.74
Toy Soldiers - 2.5
GTA Complete Pack - 12.5
GTA Complete Pack X4 - 9 (UK CAG helped me out)
Splinter Cell Echelon Edition + DLC - 14

About $81 spent. Some of this stuff will be gifted to friends and Ill try to sell/trade the GTA packs.

Also, is there a way to make giveaway private? So it won't appear on home screen of steamgifts even if you're in the group? Thinking of ways of limiting lurkers access to steamgift giveaways.

Gabe could have been REALLY evil and put up ARMA II: CO today for 75% off. Imagine the s**tstorm that would have created. :D

Anyway, guess I'll pick up Jade Empire as my "final" final purchase of the sale.
Also, is there a way to make giveaway private? So it won't appear on home screen of steamgifts even if you're in the group? Thinking of ways of limiting lurkers access to steamgift giveaways.
Just mark "invite only" when you create a giveaway. The giveaway will not show up anywhere, including in your profile and you have to manually hand out the link.

I was going to post a nice list if things I bought later after I get out of rehearsal tonight, but something amazing happened. Magical even.

I won the elusive, GOTY contender known as Coconut Queen from fellow CAGer EternalRunner. Not only did I win this spectacular game, but I also get to join the exclusive club that all the cool kids are hanging out in. Truly, This honor needed to be given its own post, free from any list of stuff I purchased. Thank you EternalRunner!

Once my grad school winds down a bit, I plan on throwing a couple of games I have lying around - I'll be sure to post it here!

PS - Jade Empire.... that was a successful troll Steam... well played...
It's just that you have to put up with a bunch of Magicka and Hydrophobia sales in between before you get to those rare gems.
LOL, is hydrophobia that bad? I bought it on my Xbox and didn't hate it.
I saw the enhanced PC version at the last minute and bought it for $1.24. Did I overpay?
Just mark "invite only" when you create a giveaway. The giveaway will not show up anywhere, including in your profile and you have to manually hand out the link.
Wow that's simple. If you don't mind, how do I hide certain line of text how Amazon thread did it with their giveaways. I'm about to make CAG elitist giveaway soon after I figure that out.
Jade Empire was an auto buy for me at that price, but I'm going to hold off until I see some of you early purchasers get a positive response back from Valve. Solidarity!
Appreciate the gesture but you should just buy it. I doubt Steam will do anything for us.

I see what you guys are saying. We all know there are people who may have joined recently, don't have a lot of posts, aren't active on the forums, etc. Those who are only in it for the giveaways.

There are also those who want to give games away, but don't want it to go to those people or lurkers.

What if there were set guidelines to being part of the group? That would limit the amount of people that have to be turned down, and honestly, I wouldn't feel bad for turning them down because they know they don't contribute.

I don't know. People are looking at the BGCQ group and seeing it as a way to give games to those who aren't lurkers, and like you said, some of those members have nothing to do with Coconut Queen. I thought this new group might help the cause.

I think that's about right. And the game itself is fine, especially for that price. It just goes on sale A LOT.

Oh, my.

Thanks Motoki, I feel a bit better. Without spoilers - can anyone tell me if the ending is improved over the xbox ending? I was afraid to google that and have a new ending spoiled.
Gabe could have been REALLY evil and put up ARMA II: CO today for 75% off. Imagine the s**tstorm that would have created. :D
At that price I'd probably end up getting it. I am really afraid I will end up hating the permadeth thing and never play it, so I am missing out on DayZ.

1. Wake up late
2. Have a slow day
3. Finally get around to opening steam
4. See daily deal
5. Die a little on the inside

In the grand scheme of things and considering the damage already done this sale its not a huge chunk of money but REALLLLY.

And god steam support is the definition of awful. Waited 5 days to get a response only to get a response that doesn't even remotely apply to the problem I'm having.

Or just set a Contributor minimum on your Steamgifts giveaway, so that only contributors can sign up for them.

Even though the Steam Sale is over, just had to come back and say that was a crap move by Steam to put Jade Empire 75% right after the sale ends..

There's a bunch of people in there that don't actually have CQ. Probably more than half actually. It's not an actual requirement, more of a sort of running joke. Also it makes it so that we don't get random people searching for the CAG group asking to get in.

As for guidelines BigSpoonyBard is setting down some guidelines and trying to clean things up a bit so much credit to him for that.
...I hope that some of you will stick around even though things will be significantly slower now...
I sure hope it slows down a little. I don't think I can keep up with this thread and hold a job if it doesn't

Well, I wake up to see that Jade Empire is on sale for 75% off. Sounds like Gaben pissed quite a few people off today...

I'm sorry guys, but I couldn't help but lol while I added it to my cart... Stupid Gaben...
In the grand scheme of things and considering the damage already done this sale its not a huge chunk of money but REALLLLY.
Yeah, that's my reaction too. I'm not angry or anything, just like, "Really, are you fucking kidding me guys? Mannnnnnnnn." I could've afforded Pixeljunk!

Well, poop.

lol. yea, trust me, i think i need to quit looking at IOS based sale sites. The amount of absolute trash on sale or gone free/freemium clogs the mind. Cag forums thankfully only generally report the best of the best, and for Steam even more so since Steam isn't nearly as cluttered with trash.

I almost pulled the trigger on the Magicka Collection this steam sale, but didn't and am already regretting it. Then again, i was already well over my paltry budget of $20. But I got some good games instead, so I don't feel too bad.
At that price I'd probably end up getting it. I am really afraid I will end up hating the permadeth thing and never play it, so I am missing out on DayZ.
Yeah, I would give it a shot at 75% off but $18 was a bit steep just to try out DayZ. I doubt I would play the main game very much since I am not too fond of realistic military shooters.

So my total this sale was the highest ever for me at a steam sale ever. $80. But you know, last night I took my daughter to dinner. Her, her boyfriend, me, my wife. The cost of the meal was more than my highest ever steam sale amount.

I know I'm a cheap ass, but I think I need to stop stressing so much about every dollar I spend on games.... Naw, never gonna happen. Cheap ass gamer to the core. My wife says it's a disease. So she encourages me to spend during steam sales. How awesome is that.

Thanks to plft for the faerie solitaire giveaway that I won!
And my Haul:
Trine 2
Binding of Isaac Bundle
Metro 2033(gmg)
Alan Wake Bundle
The Witcher 2
Fable TLC
Dear Esther
Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl
Beyond Good and Evil
Secret of the Magic Crystals(gift from friend)
Faerie Solitaire(thanks plft)
Coconut Queen(given to friend)

Total = $50
glad I didn't go over $50

Thanks Jatan

Well here is my super secret, elitist CAG contributor giveaway. It ends 10:15pm today, and limited to contributors of $10 or more.
The Last Remnant Giveaway Link
Hidden till message quoted, and will only post this twice on this thread at most.

Too bad there wasn't a way to choose both invite only and group. Also, please don't quote this message or talk about this post on this thread, suppose to be super secret (lol).

Magicka goes on sale ALL THE TIME. I think Gamersgate is having a Paradox sale right now. Amazon probably still has those Paradox packs with Magicka in them too.

It's always midnight somewhere in the world and Magicka is always on sale someplace.

A couple of musings about Jade Empire:

1) The 360 controller is recognized instantly and the controls seem fine to me.

2) The first time I played Jade Empire was on an Xbox 360 so I'm bowled over by how pretty this PC port is at 1920x1080 and max settings. Lovely, exquisite, etc.

I think I figured out where your money went and where to cut costs for more money next sale

Amazon is selling it for ~$13 alongside Crusader Kings II, Sword of the Start Collection and Sword of the Stars 2 and Victoria II (all independent keys, so you could sale/giveaway those you don't care/already have).

What's really odd is despite getting the Paradox Pack which included Magicka of course. I have no urge or desire to play that game, maybe I should I guess.

But at this point Magicka is what AoL Demo disks used to be during the 90's

From a non-BGCQ member, but frequent poster to this forum, I think the way you need to manage your group is to just start it all over. Once you've removed everyone, only invite the people you think should be in it and start a thread somewhere else so that we can keep the "Can I be invited to the group" posts out of this thread.

I honestly thought this was the most fun Steam sale yet. I got a ton of value for $30+ bucks, but if I was new there were so many good prices to be had. The flash deals and voting were ingenious. I'm sure they led to time spent viewing Steam up 20x or something crazy that Gabe will never tell us. The repeated sales probably made more money each time they came up, not less. Like I bought POP 2008 the first time it popped up, and in the past I thought, "I'll pick up the others next sale season if I like this one." Well when they come back in three days I was seriously considering picking up more just because. So smart.

And, I had more fun checking here and playing whatever I wanted, than digging through games for achievements.

But what if I'm all out of bubble gum?

And I'm only here for the giveaways. I think. maybe. fr33 stuf plz...

and that SR3 sale hurt me down deep gabe. To think I believed in him...

And I see a lot of love for Jade Empire. I looked back through the past bunch of pages, but saw it was decent looking, and a new ending, butnot much about what it is. Kinda KOTOR like gameplay but based in mystical china? thanks.
