CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

I don't especially like that part myself, I have the most fun just having a single fighter doing heavy combat. It's accentuated in AP where there's a huge war going on and you can just go into one of those sectors and find a bunch of ships to dogfight with.
The sad thing is I find myself on forums looking for the next best deal on computer games rather than actually playing the damned things. Is it sad that I now own some games on both steam and my 360 and have never actually played them on either?
I feel the same way too. But it seems like most CAGs are like this.... since we get to acquire more games for pc/consoles during awesome deals... we tend to accumulate a number of games faster than those that pay at retail.
Not sure. I'm just blocked from making purchases and it says to contact support. This was my first Steam sale, so maybe account security flagged my account due to the sudden influx of charges on an otherwise idle account.
I had the same problem. Support didn't respond for 36 hours and of course by that time the flash sale was long over. Had to ask a fellow CAG to buy the game for me.

well atleast on steam, my fiance can't complain of all the space it's taking up in the house lol.

I'm so glad I just checked this thread - didn't even notice the X series on sale. Missed it during the summer sale so now I'm super happy :D. Grabbed the gold box.
I've pretty much completely converted over to steam instead of my consoles at this point. Well mostly because at my job I have alot of downtime just sitting in an ambulance (thank god for 4G). The sad thing is I find myself on forums looking for the next best deal on computer games rather than actually playing the damned things. Is it sad that I now own some games on both steam and my 360 and have never actually played them on either?
I have a good quarter of my Steam games also on my consoles, and plan to duplicate more (I only got back into PC gaming recently, so most of games are still on console). Personally I like it that way - gives me more freedom to play the games I enjoy in the manner I want. If I'm on the road, I have my laptop. If I want to play on the HDTV, I have my PS3 or X360. If I want to watch a movie on the HDTV and play a game at the same time, I have my laptop (I like to multi-task ). Plus, I'm one of those people who play the same games over and over again. Although I did just realize that I now I have Fallout 3 GOTY on all three systems, and have yet to play it on any - oops.
Maybe it's because I was a newcomer to NFS, but I found the online part of Hot Pursuit to be fantastic. The single player stuff didn't do much for me.
I only played the PS3 version but I really liked MP and HP in general. The cops SP was great but hated the racer SP.
You won't go wrong with getting the goldbox. However if you start with X3:R it'll be disorienting going to TC/AP. If you start with TC/AP it'll be disorienting going to R. The interface changes are that drastic. TC/AP is a lot more fluid and makes sense to me, but I started with TC. There is an overarching plot throughout the games, along with multiple plots in each game. X3:R is worth the extra $1.24 for the goldbox over the terran war pack assuming you enjoy the gameplay.

If nothing else I would start a game in TC, do the flight simulator mission at the way beginning and then go to R. It'll give you a few basics such as how to control your ship.
Are the original X and X2 worth owning or can I just stick with X3 series?
This tutorial series helped me a lot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p73C60btBi8

It's like a 15-20 part tutorial and you watch one, then play a little using what you learned. Then you move on to the next part in the tutorial. The fact that it took over 15 parts at about 10 minutes a piece kinda re-affirms just how complex these things are though.

I had fun with X3 for a while, but I eventually gave up after I got to a point where I needed to monitor 2 or 3 ships in various sectors at a time. Just too much crap to keep track of.
I had X3 TC and Reunion from some gold box pack awhile ago and never got around to it. Maybe now I can get to it with this, thanks.

And as far as long or short games. I tend to like my games in short bursts now, like NFS Run where races only lasted a few minutes. I play Madden with 2min quarters. I also mostly play M&B warband custom battles now or COD spec ops missions for how brief they can be.

I hated Hot Pursuit. It felt more like a simulator at times than an arcadey racer, maybe it's my fault for expecting the wrong kind of game but I bought it based on Criterion's previous game Burnout Paradise which I loved. I really didn't enjoy it. I knew it wasn't open world or had hidden items and stuff, but I thought I would still like it.
What's weird is how getting all the games you want super cheap changes your perception, years ago you paid $50 for a game you wanted, played the hell out of it, and didn't think once about how many hours you spent playing, cause you just got paid again, and can afford that shiny new game and spend another month or 2 playing the hell out of that one. But now, cause you have a little thing called backlog, and that same $50 buys 10 times the games, you feel compelled to make spreadsheets to keep track of them (I'm guilty as well), and you feel the need to assign value to the games (not that it really matters, because now you are willing to buy a game that has a 55% approval rating cause it's worth a try at $2, right?) to try to create a system that somehow gives you closure to how many you bought, and where you should be spending your time.

But that's the real issue. Even if we were teenagers again, and had all the time in the world to play whatever we wanted, the simple truth is that gaming has changed, and there just isn't enough time to play the games we have. You will never catch up. Between Indie publishers, main stream releases, and the updates/releases to those games. Just be sure you don't fall into the trap of clearing your backlog for the sake of clearing it. Remember, if your not enjoying yourself, what's the point?

And Dota2, never forget Dota2. That's my issue at this moment. So many games I want to play that are brand new and shiny, but I also play Dota with friends, and I friggin love Dota and can't stop playing, so that's even less time to play new games, which means more backlog. Nowadays if I play a new purchase for 10 hrs I think it was fantastic (Skyrim got me for 34 hrs! That was huge for me). So yeah, time.
Are the original X and X2 worth owning or can I just stick with X3 series?
I'm not sure, never played them. They'd probably be quite dated and a bit hard to get into.

Dota and work are my problems as well :) When I have time to play, I really want to play Dota even though I have a shitload of games to play.
KOTOR's a great game (I even liked the sequel - though not quite as much).
I am sure it will be on sale again somewhere.
I actually really enjoyed both the original and the sequel - big problem I had with the sequel was the ending sucked. And I wish they'd included the cut content. Still, that series is one of my all time favorites.
Burnout Paradise was awesome. Criterion was great until they teamed up with EA and produced NFS:Hot Pursuit. That was a steaming pile of poop.
I actually think NFS: HP is the second best arcade racer this gen, after Burnout. Incredible game. Sorry you didn't enjoy it. It's only serious misstep for me was a bit too many time trials, but i actually enjoyed even those.

Hey folks I have two coupons in my inventory I will never use. They are the SS3 and Trine 2 75% off joints if anyone wants the for FREE they can have them. Just hollar at me on Steam and they are yours. Just trying to clean out my inventory and have almost gotten back to zero in there. So help me clean it out thanks.

The blog of the guy who made Coconut Queen is here:

http://megowan.wordpress.com/

He's got a few entries about CQ, as well as some gaming industry talk and personal stuff etc.

He recently posted a blog basically saying he doesn't think a Kickstarter would work for him because neither himself nor Coconut Queen have enough name recognition to pull it off.

...has anyone sent him a link to this thread? or just a copy of your purchase history for the last two weeks?

FYI someone in the other thread said the $6 Steamworks Rage on Newegg is the Anarchy Edition with pre-order bonuses. I don't think you can get these normally if you buy it on Steam, can you?

*Edit: Apparently it comes with the extra Wasteland Sewer Mission too.
*Edit2: People on the Rage Steam forums are saying no, the version you buy at Steam does not have the AE DLC and you can't buy them separately there either, you can only get it from the retail edition. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2815040
I thought about X on the big sale and am kind of thinking about it again. The problem is all these space games have really steep learning curves to me and they just make me go

If you have a copy of it - start w/ Freelancer.

Then move onto more complex things - i.e. Freespace series (on GOG); and EgoSoft's X series.

Wow, you're in my head. Well, I also make spreadsheets and track values because I'm one of those weirdos who enjoy that kind of data collection and manipulation, but otherwise - yeah. Exactly.

You will never catch up. I'm a real platform agnostic gamer, I'll play anything that has a game on it that I enjoy. iPhone, iPad, DS, PSP, all consoles, PC. Doesn't matter, I don't bash one over another (Though I loathe the Wii's lack of HD / 5.1 on a 'modern' console.) I also highly enjoy user content, which can extend a game's life to extreme lengths and are at times of such high quality that they become an indie release themselves. Not to mention the stunning amount of free content on iOS / PC.

So yeah, you will never catch up. I really wanted to pick up the indie gala bundle today because some of the titles looked really good and the price was right - but I had to skip it because, why? I will never catch up. I know that. I added a bunch of games to my catalog these past few weeks because they are games that command a high priority from me. And unless something's going to outright jump the queue, I'm tired of buying games just to shelve them in a bottomless backlog.

Gaming is mainstream now. The number of players (indies, publishers, dev houses, platforms, etc) in the market is probably 1000x what we grew up with. The price has went so low, and the amount of high quality content being produced every day is so high that there likely no longer exists enough hours in the day to play every interesting title, even if they were all free forever.
Rage is Steamworks? Well, crap, maybe I'll have to bite on this then.
RAGE PC requires Steam.

BTW, you might want to force an install RAGE from the 3 DVD discs.
The game takes up around a whopping 24 GB of space!

Otherwise, if you don't have a fast connection, it might take you hours to download from Steam.

I asked this in the Newegg thread but if I have the special edition for the 360 is there any reason to grab Rage for the PC? Any special mods?
It might take you hours to install from DVDs too, although it will be definitely faster than over steam
Took me like 40 minutes to install from the 3 discs & then let Steam do its thing to update it.

My PC -> Intel i7 950; 1 GB of GeForce GTX 560 Ti; 8 GB of RAM; 2 DVD burners; Two 1 TB WD Black Cavair hard drives (for a total of 2 TB).

You know, I haven't heard much about RAGE PC mods.

Maybe others could answer that question?

I think most PC gamers were STILL trying to get the game running properly and/or look properly -- even on high-end rigs. ;)

EDIT:
You might wanna check the RAGE Steam forums for any sorts of fixes, mods (if there are any), and other stuff about RAGE...

I remember paying $70 for a new SNES game. It was my entire savings. I totally played the crap out of that game even though it turned out to be pretty meh. Now I wouldn't spent $5 on that game, and if I did, it could totally be month before I play it.

My time:money ratio over the last 20 years has changed from one extreme to the other.

The sale was over, then I bought Jade Empire + The Last Remnant from GMG.
Now I bought Rage from Newegg. Geesh.

If this doesn't end soon I'm going to have to unplug my router.

I bought it just because I was already watching it (was waiting for $5~) and wanted the physical copy for that price to boot. If given the choice for a relatively small premium, still like having the discs for install / reinstall without having to make my own discs.

Extra bonuses as well? Sweet!

Question: I played Deus Ex Human Revolution on my friend's laptop, I was maybe 45 minutes to an hour in, and honestly I thought it was one of the most painfully boring games I have played in some time. Granted, I never gave it a fair shot and this has happened in the past with games for me, hated them at first, ended up loving them.

Now that its like $10 or less in most places, think its worth it?

I was one of the few that actually bought Rage on release day for 360, and yet I'm still compelled to buy it again for pc...I don't even think my laptop can run it all beautiful like either. I just want it in my steam library, wtf is wrong with me? -.-

If you're not sure if you like it, wait until it's at a lower price point. The base game has already been $7.50 in Steam sales. It's up to you what your own cost/risk degree is, but you'll be able to get it cheaper later on and it will be less of an investment if you end up not liking it.

Stupid Steam selling games for stupid cheap, games you don't even need and maybe won't even play. Many of us have that problem LOL.

Eh better price than Steam. And even if it ends up being the "regular" edition, oh well. C'est la vie.

Thanks for the heads up about Rage, I told myself if it was less than $7 I was going to pick it up during the Summer Sale. As we all know that did no happen so this is perfect!

Just a heads up to everyone that bought The Last Remnant right before it dropped even lower to $3.xx, I contacted GMG support and told them what happened and they said that they would put the difference in my account!
