CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
So Dark Souls pre-order on Gamersgate. It says it activates on Steam. Still has GFWL (according to the box) though :p

With the IGN discount it comes to $33.96. Then you get bonus blue coins for pre-ordering so you get a total of $5.69 in blue coins to use later.

Decisions, decisions.
Oh shit that's cool. Not preordering but it's nice to know there are other ways to get it on steam than steam itself.
Motoki, stop spending money. ;)

I know. I totally need to be cut off.

And take Fish Tycoon off your wishlist, you impressionable pup, you.

Haha, it's your fault. I saw you playing it the other night and went ooh ooh! *clicks wishlist*

I'll yank it off. For now. Though I warn you I will probably just buy that whole Last Day of Work pack at some point on a big sale. :lol:

The sad thing is I'm still playing the game. I almost bought that Last Day of Work pack, but at that point my spending had reached ridiculous hieghts for the sale. And I just really wasn't sure I wanted something as dull-looking as Plant Tycoon.

All that talk yesterday made me want to play Insaniquarium, though. I won a contest a while back and own all Popcap games, so I'll have to try it. Unfortunately, the games don't activate on Steam, but hey.
If you right click and hit view cdkey does it show you one?
You know, it actually does not; All it says is "Requesting key..." endlessly.

Now that I think about it, all I did was put in my Origin username and password when the game requested it. (I didn't even expect that to work, but it did.)

Have you tried downloading and launching the game?

Not yet, I've been spending my game time inside the depths of Grimrock. I guess the key is only needed for multiplayer, but from what it sounded like was that people were locked out of the whole game.

Fable III. I bought it for $12.50 and liked the first half, but it gets worse and becomes a real-estate sim once you become king. I see why everyone hates it now. At least Fable: The Lost Chapters came with it.

Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition. I was on the fence on getting it. Looking back, I should have since it probably won't be $7.50 again for a long time.

Jade Empire. It's frustrating that I got it for $7.50 on the last day and the next it was $3.75. But a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush I guess.

Toy Soliders. I was in Europe for the better part of the Sale unfortunately. I didn't see this was a flash deal for $2.99. Granted I have it for the 360, but I would have liked having it for the PC, too.

Amazon has run a couple sales this year with DA:O Ultimate + DA2 bundled for $10. Another such sale may yet come along.

DA:O UE and DA2 pack will be $10 on amazon on 7/28. Origin only though.

I regret trying to have a life one night of the sale, and missing the Shift series deal by like 15 minutes.

Not sure if I regret it or not, but I think I might've missed-out on Krater.
Would've helped, if they actually released a DEMO for the game.

To be honest, I am not really sure. I can't imagine they are doing full blown Steamworks with achievements AND the GFWL with achievements both. My thinking is just Steam registerable keys but the game itself is GFWL like Amazon did with Bioshock but I have no confirmation on that so it's just a guess.

Greenmangaming is also doing their pre-order for it and theirs also says it registers on Steam. I haven't seen anyone yet do one that doesn't say it registers on Steam. Maybe if you buy it straight from the GFWL marketplace? I honestly don't know.

The whole thing is confusing so I guess we will have to wait and see unless Bandai clarifies.

There was a free beta for a while before it was released and I did post about it here in this thread when that happened. But yeah, a demo would help I suppose especially considering they've done a number of updates since the beta.

We've been waiting for Bandai to decide on G4WL or Steam for A WHILE. Why don't they just say what they're using?
:0

I hope they ain't using G4WL, since Microsoft does a TERRIBLE job at even fixing the tons of issues G4WL has (disappearing saves; can't connect to G4WL; game might not boot; might need to reinstall G4WL to get game going; etc etc).

Thanks God I ain't hit many of those issues...

Somehow I've had Steam for over 3 years and still don't own Half-Life 2...I think I own Blue Shift from when it was $0.99 a while ago. I think my biggest regret was Toy Soldiers. I bought everything else that came on sale that I wanted. Now I'm being tempted by Dirt 2 even though I know I won't play it anytime soon, if ever...but 75% off :(
Morrowind. I don't know why I decided to pass on it when Oblivion was on sale. Hopefully it doesn't take another two years to go on sale again.
Nah, Morrowind/Oblivion are staples during the Summer/Winter sales. You'll see it again in 5 months, if not before.

I'll comment on these. ;)

I'm looking forward to Trine 2 myself, and hoping it's as good as the first.

Dear Esther was... interesting. Not sure I'll ever play it again, but watched it with my girlfriend, and I think we both enjoyed it. The soundtrack is lovely, though.

I'm going to be interested to see what The Longest Journey is like - I didn't pick up Dreamfall though. Heard it wasn't as good, and ends on an unresolved cliffhanger.

I almost picked up Legend of Fae - it, along with Alan Wake, are the two that I wonder if I should have picked up. I'd be curious to know your thoughts on this one, and whether I should grab it in the next sale (it's on my wishlist so I remember.)
Yeah I was thinking that, i've never been a computer gamer. I have an Aspire 7741Z-4433 laptop. If anyone could give any input on its capabilities id be really glad.
The biggest problem you're going to face is the integrated graphics cards. Those things are built to allow you to surf the web, maybe play a movie or do some word processing. They're NOT made to run games.

That being said, some games CAN run on them. The older the game, the better. Something like Deus Ex: Human Revolution? Probably not. Deus Ex (Original)? Possibly. Pop cap games? Probably.

So it really depends on the type of games you want to play. If you're satisfied with playing older or more casual games (hell, even stuff like Avernum or Geneforge Saga, or a lot of the indie games) you'll probably do okay. Blockbuster hits, you'll probably have to leave to consoles, desktops or an upgraded laptop.

That being said, there are a LOT of indie/casual games out there that you could spend a LOT of time enjoying, if you cared to do so.

I'd say load up steam and see what runs. Can't really hurt anything.

I would just like to comment on your Persona-themed avatar and username. Good show, my boy.

Although, I find myself in a less-represented side of the community; I liked Persona 3 far better than 4. I wasn't too crazy about FES, I admit, but I thought that Persona 3 was a complete RPG package on its own.

That's just me, though.

This. Also, this website may give you an idea of what games your laptop can run. It's not the perfect tool, but it gives you a ballpark estimate at least.

My laptop has an integrated graphics card as well, and it can run Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike Source, Portal, and Half-Life 2 pretty well. (Valve is awesome). I haven't tried anything more heavy-duty on my laptop though, because I know it'll just end up disappointing me.

If you like games like Diablo, Torchlight is a nice Diablo-like type of game and it runs great on lesser-spec'd laptops. A lot of smaller, indie games will work okay, too.

TBH, I didn't play it extensively. I kind of like the idea of it and the setting was quirky and fun. I didn't love the controls though but maybe that's just my own nitpicky thing.

Flowette posted some more in depth impressions but it was in the old thread and I have no idea what page it was on, sorry.

I do believe I saw I number of comments and impressions from people who played it in the Steam forum for Krater. The opinions seemed pretty mixed to me, but I do know Fatshark is continuing to work on the game so I don't think it should be considered totally finished at this point either.

re: Will Steam run on my laptop

What he said. The Steam client itself should run fine. I've tried it on a couple of laptops an even a crappy notebook computer with an Atom processor and it works fine. It's not the client you have to worry about it's the games themselves and that's going to completely vary since you could be running anything from Commander Keen or Windosill to Rage or Metro 2033.
I just finished Sniper Elite V2 on Marksman and giving it a run through on the hardest difficulty. I suck at anything stealth too. On Marksman I was able to just kill every single enemy every time without the need to stealth too much. Just masking shots with bombs at times but there are some levels that are HARD to try to charge through.
I played some more last night with a "Snipe 'em all" mentality and, hey, that's much easier!

I think I was led by the tutorial mission to think I needed to sneak past everyone a lot more than I do. I'm still only on the 3rd mission but at least now I'm making progress. Playing the mid-level since the easiest one eliminates the bullet physics that are supposed to be distinctive in the game.

Seek and ye shall find:
Sit down, you. Yes, you Dave.

I'm going to talk a bit about Krater, which I picked up a few weeks ago at launch. I've played 4-5 hours of it now and... I'm sorry to say I can't really recommend it. Yet.

Pros:
- It has a nice take on the post-apocalyptic theme, bit more colour than normal;
- Scratches a hacky-slashy-looty itch which will appeal to some;
- Vast majority of bugs-at-launch have now been fixed;
- Crafting has potential;
- Soundtrack aint bad;
- It's not Diablo 3.

Cons:
- Combat in dungeons is too short-lived, and often relies on just mashing buttons wildly;
- The "Permadeath" gimmick doesn't feel dangerous enough, you can just heal your characters when you get back to a town (Admittedly, Hardcore mode might be a better option);
- It's just not that much fun. I tend to run my characters into a pack of monsters, hit a load of buttons, and hope everybody survives. And I do it a lot. It seems pretty repetitive. There just doesn't seem to be much strategy about it;
- Your characters seem to have a "cap" on their levelling, which means after a while there's no real point in clearing a dungeon or suchlike - they were at max level a few hours ago so what's the point?

I think it can become a pretty good game in time, with a few tweaks here and there. The devs, FatShark, seem to be taking feedback pretty seriously so hopefully we'll see a betterer version introduced over the coming weeks and months, but as it stands Krater just isn't that fun to play. It's really quite samey.

Multiplayer is being patched in sometime next month (I think) which might change it up a bit, but I'd only jump in on it if it really looks like you're kinda game. Casual hackyslashers might get bored pretty fast.

Hope that helps Dave.
p.s. Please let me know if your name is in actual fact Dave.

p.p.s. My opinion still hasn't changed. It doesn't feel fun enough. I'm going to leave it for a couple of months and come back to it with a fresh viewpoint.

Ah, thanks Flowette!

I should start saving some of my long winded posts in case someone asks about them because I'd have no clue where to find them. Of course that's probably because I post too damned much. ;)

That's just me, though.
i love persona 3. i have yet to really dig into persona 4 (it's hard to squeeze in those 100 hr RPGs), but it's going to take a lot to dethrone 3.

edit: off topic, i know. maybe this should turn into a discussion about why atlus should port persona to the PC :)
I am curious, whats everyone's biggest regret of the sale. By this I mean which game are you sad you didn't get when it went on sale. For me its shoot many robots. I was on the fence then it went off sale before I could decide and ultimately I wish I'd gotten it.
My biggest regret was that Silent Hill: Homecoming was barely on sale, 50% off $39.99. I regret not buying it ... but I would have regretted buying it even more, seeing as it's been $9.99 in the past ... I know I like the game, just not sure it'll work to my expectations, 3D, controller, etc. and $10 is gamble enough. :lol:

My biggest problem with the sale is it seemed like some games would repeatedly pop up on sale, when they could have brought in other games instead.
I played some more last night with a "Snipe 'em all" mentality and, hey, that's much easier!

I think I was led by the tutorial mission to think I needed to sneak past everyone a lot more than I do. I'm still only on the 3rd mission but at least now I'm making progress. Playing the mid-level since the easiest one eliminates the bullet physics that are supposed to be distinctive in the game.
lol. well to some up my run through, after the tutorial I threw a total of 0 rocks for the rest of the game, booby trapped 0 bodies, and used 3 trip mines (mainly to protect me while I was sniping the entire city :).

The main complaints I read online were that people felt the game had the tendency to turn into skirmishes and there really wasn't a way to stealth the game all the way. I think this is partially true because in the different stages enemies seem to spawn in places specifically meant to see you as you make your progress. Masking shots with the bombs and sneaking in close quarters with the silencer pistol were the two "stealth" techniques that helped me the most.

That said, there is an achievement for finishing a stage without being shot (ha!) and another one for finishing a specific part of a stage without being spotted. And there are I would say 4-5 points in the game where I probably would have had an easier time just avoiding being seen rather than trying to murder the whole army. Marksman I think is the good fun difficulty because it still takes into account bullet physics.

Heh, this just reminded me of something. There was a community choice vote during the summer sale that pitted Krater, E.Y.E. & Sanctum. Sanctum ended up winning, and several people were unhappy with the results because they wanted Krater. I posted that in this case, despite the fact that Sanctum goes on sale a lot, the best game actually won the vote.

Some guy got a little pissed off at me for pointing that out and made some snarky comment back to me. I was gonna reply with equal snark, but then I stopped myself because I knew that at some point during the sale, he'd end up buying Krater and that would be punishment enough.

Resonance is now available for purchase on Steam and is 10% off ($8.99) until August 1st.

When a brilliant particle physicist dies unexpectedly, the race is on to secure his terrible new technology before it falls into the wrong hands. The lives of four playable characters become entangled as they fight against the clock to find the dead scientist’s secret vault.
Genre: Adventure, Indie
Oh fine. I won't be happy and feel like the Summer Sale is truly over.

I'm gonna post this. But I want comments on my buys, damnit. I should get something back from the effort of compiling this. :D

For the hubby:

Mafia II DLC: Joe's Adventure
Mafia II DLC: Jimmy's Vendetta
Shogun 2 + all DLC
Space Marine + all DLC
The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion GOTY
Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013
No Mafia II: Betrayal Of Jimmy? For shame. All you would have needed to do would be to find some guy in Russia with a copy (because it's only available in a couple of East European countries) and let him gouge you on the price for it.

My fault, my fault. I shouldn't have mentioned the "3 vs 4" thing, since that could become volatile among hardcore fans. Though, I have to admit, it would be nice to have PERSONA3 in my Steam list.

Oh well, time to get back to Steam discussion - The next Daily will arrive in 20 minutes. I await its arrival.
Don't let the missing DLC keep you from Burnout Paradise. It's a wonderful game without that dlc and totally worth your time.
THIS ^

Burnout Paradise is my favorite arcade racer of all time--and I've been playing since the days of pole position. ><

Not bothering with Burnout Paradise b/c of some DLC they never ported is like throwing away a ferrari because it didn't come with a spare tire... not that they ever come with spare tires... but you know what I'm saying. #iamretarded

Anyway, fire that bad boy up and enjoy it--it's a BRILLIANT game.
Yeah I was thinking that, i've never been a computer gamer. I have an Aspire 7741Z-4433 laptop. If anyone could give any input on its capabilities id be really glad.
Honestly for the games too rum it will all depend on the amount of RAM you have in the laptop. Currently I am using a Toshiba Satelite P775(I think), it does have integrated graphics but I have only came across 3 or 4 games that will not run on it at lowest settings. My biggest surprise was getting New Vegas to run on it using the Ultra settings with no slowdown.

Edit: The games that have not worked:
Brink
Sniper Elite V2
Amnesia
GTA 4(runs but the textures will not appear)

I remember reading that same comment but, like so many things in the summer sale, the thread moved way too fast to do anything about it.

They're all of a similar "could be great, has flaws" mould, but Krater in particular would probably lead to the biggest letdown.

Shame it didn't win, then :lol:
I almost picked up Legend of Fae - it, along with Alan Wake, are the two that I wonder if I should have picked up. I'd be curious to know your thoughts on this one, and whether I should grab it in the next sale (it's on my wishlist so I remember.)
As my sig suggests, I've played a couple of hours so far, so I think I can comment.

The twist on the match 3 puzzle quest genre here is that during a level you are always working on the puzzle, gathering gems to move and to power up your elementals. You often fight multiple enemies in real time, with them color coded to elements so you can hit them with their weakness. As you go on, the enemy can blind you (prevents you from seeing anything except for focus gems) and poison you. They also put up shields of various elements, which are also vulnerable to weaknesses. Enemies occasionally drop items which you can pick up. Also, between enemy encounters, you can select your elementals to give you bufs.

While there is a goal time and score, I don't know if that has any real effect on anything other than giving you a star for the level. I'm playing on hard, and after the 6th level I'm really struggling to meet those goals.

The only real negatives I see are aspects that break up the flow. when clicking on the enemy display, there is an animation that hides the gem grid and expands the enemy display slightly. I'd rather just be able to click on my elemental and attack the enemy. It is also annoying that every time a shield is thrown up by the enemy that it basically comes up as a dialog that you have to click to continue.

All of those are minor issues. For $2.49, this is a very good game and I could see myself playing a lot of it.
Today's deal is Lucid at 75% off ($1.24)
That should have been the daily deal on Monday. Just to serve as a slap across the face to let us know that the summer sale was really over.
