CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Holy crap, talk about coincidences! So I went to BigSpoonyBard's steam profile to make sure I had his username spelled right when adding him to my raptr list (-> think I had accidentally ignored a request from you a few days ago?)...then the very next thing I did was check who won my Project Freedom steamgifts giveaway.....NONE OTHER THAN BigSpoonyBard!!!??!?!?!
Now those are the daily deals we are used to........indie crap that was free a few months ago. Yay!
So tomorrow Faerie Solitaire will be the weekend deal?!?!
Dead Island GOTY edition available.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/91310/

Price reduced to $19.99 including
Bloodbath Arena DLC
Ryder White DLC
Blueprint "The Ripper" Weapon

Good for people who waited. Just wait for the next sale

Once again, this fortifies my idea that only buy games in GOTY or complete edition.
I've heard time and time again that the DLC is pretty worthless so, I'm not mad that I bought it at $10
I've heard time and time again that the DLC is pretty worthless so, I'm not mad that I bought it at $10
I'm just gonna wait till it gets 75% off and get at $5.

Tried the game before but felt it was pretty boring but at $5 maybe I will get it.

I bought the DLC just to be a completionist, but now it shows I own the GOTY edition on Steam. Wonder if that includes that special weapon? How would I confirm that, anyone know? Or did the weapon come with one of the DLCs?
So Dark Souls pre-order on Gamersgate. It says it activates on Steam. Still has GFWL (according to the box) though :p

With the IGN discount it comes to $33.96. Then you get bonus blue coins for pre-ordering so you get a total of $5.69 in blue coins to use later.

Decisions, decisions.
If it helps your decision process any, I can honestly say that if either Demon's Souls or Dark Souls cost $100+ at release, I'd still say they were absolutely worth it. I know those are some tall words, and I'm only building the hype, but I think DSouls are that good.
re: Krater

TBH, I didn't play it extensively. I kind of like the idea of it and the setting was quirky and fun. I didn't love the controls though but maybe that's just my own nitpicky thing.

Flowette posted some more in depth impressions but it was in the old thread and I have no idea what page it was on, sorry.

I do believe I saw I number of comments and impressions from people who played it in the Steam forum for Krater. The opinions seemed pretty mixed to me, but I do know Fatshark is continuing to work on the game so I don't think it should be considered totally finished at this point either.
@Motoki
Thanks for your thoughts & insights on this matter, much appreciated. :)

@Flowette
Whenever you are, do you have a link handy to your post of your thoughts on Krater?

EDIT:
@Flowette
Nevermind, I see your post in quotes - READING!

I regret buying the Dead Island DLC. I got it for free with that $5 Green Man Gaming credit. I tried to play it and it just kinda sucks. At least compared to the main game. There are no upgrades or leveling up, I didn't think that would bother me but it does.
edit: off topic, i know. maybe this should turn into a discussion about why atlus should port persona to the PC :)
On a semi-related note, while I realize this is against everything that CAGs stand for, part of me also wants to pre-order Dark Souls in order to try to vote with my wallet that I want the Japanese to port more of their RPGs over to the PC.

I mean if it bombs I am sure they will say there is no market for JRPGs (even though it's decidedly more western than most JRPGs) and then not make another one for years. I'm sure the Last Remnant doing poorly was blame on their not being a PC market rather than, you know, the game just was kind of meh.

Just curious if you tried it with a couple friends or not.

I played co-op a few times and found that it is more fun with friends than solo but, I still enjoyed the game alone.

When I first heard about that I went 'Really Obsidian?'

Then again after Dungeon Siege 3 it's bound to look amazing in comparison.
That should have been the daily deal on Monday. Just to serve as a slap across the face to let us know that the summer sale was really over.
Amen. Now we now we are back to business as usual.

As much as I would have bitched about Magicka or Hydrophobia as DotD for the 800th time, they would have been far preferable to that Jade Empire maneuver.

I should stick to this plan as well I would save money in the long run.

I bought Dead Island 4 pk and traded the other two for SR3, Civ5:GOTY and New Vegas: UE. So a free game essentially. So with reports of the DLC not being worth it...irks me a little but not to concerned about it.

Hmm, I really want Resonance, but as many times as Gemini Rue has ended up in bundles, yeah, I'll wait.

Also why is Dead Island GotY showing as $19.99 for me, which is LESS than the regular version? I don't own it so I shouldn't be getting the upgrade discount...unless Deep Silver is cutting me a break for spending a bajillion dollars to import that German Risen 2 CE. :p

Edit: or is that just the new regular price? Either way, I'm waiting for the whole enchilda to go $5 before I bite, sorry.

It's a rough topic that relies on a lot of factors. Not just sales figures, but the mentality of the "higher-up's" at any developer or publisher. There will always be varying reports on the "console profitability vs. PC profitability" issue.

A situation like Alan Wake, wherein the development costs of the PC version were recovered almost immediately upon release, is an excellent step for the PC market as a whole. However, there's still going to be companies like Microsoft and Rockstar that simply don't favor the PC platform.

Microsoft has every reason to keep their 360 games off the PC - They get relatively heavy royalties from the console version. Rockstar's decision-making in regards to the PC market is simply a mystery to me.
I am curious, whats everyone's biggest regret of the sale. By this I mean which game are you sad you didn't get when it went on sale. For me its shoot many robots. I was on the fence then it went off sale before I could decide and ultimately I wish I'd gotten it.
I bought too many games, so I don't have regrets at not picking something up. I'm sure I'll still have a hefty backlog by the winter sale time.
DS3 was solid, good, and decent - but it's just not really a classic-style DS game (like DS1 or 2).

Though, I'm glad Chris Avellone is involved w/ Wasteland 2.
And hearing that Chris Avellone is thinking to "Kickstart" a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment makes me want to fall out of my chair.
I won't say it was the most awful game ever, but I personally can't call it solid or decent either. I just felt generic to me. If another developer made it that wouldn't surprise me but I suppose I have higher standards for Obsidian and to me it felt like they just phoned that one in.

I also didn't see the point in calling it Dungeon Siege 3 since I felt it was on like DS 1 or 2 in the most broad senst that it's an action RPG. They might as well have just called it something else. Especially since there hadn't been a DS in ages so it's not like it was some hot IP or something.

Also, though most AAA games these days are like this to some extent, this one really screamed made for a console to me.

If you enjoyed it I'm not knocking that and I think that's great. For me though I found it to do something even worse than being a bad game. I found it boring and generic, which is something I never thought I'd say for an Obsidian game. At least some of the games that I've tried that were total train wrecks were memorable and amusing in a weird way.

Honestly I would have much rather have had the cancelled Alien RPG they were going to make with that same engine.

I was originally holding off to get this on PC back when there were rumors that it might show up. Then it did and unfortunately it was GFWL. I want to support their PC port but I have had nothing but problems with GFWL and it was constantly crashing the last time I tried to use it making my game unplayable. I broke down and got it on PS3.

Thanks for the link! So sad Planescape: Torment ended when I was playing it...What has me worried is whether a lot of these kickstarter projects and re-boots will fizzle when they come out.

I actually contributed to the Wasteland one already so really hoping it's not a flop and looking forward to X-Com.

I thought Lucid was ok. I did get it for free, so maybe that makes it a bit better, but I didn't find it to be grossly incompetent or anything. It's fairly basic, but nicely done and it's a good little mindless time-waster. It's priced right.

DS3 was nothing special, I think we all could've done a lot worse. Engine was solid, constant flow of loot was solid, and the action was decent (provided that you used a gamepad). DS3's story and narrative was better than previous games (if that's really saying much here - DS3's story is nothing special), though the gameplay was "different" and nowhere as interesting as previous titles.

When I think DS series - I think of lots of action and fast-paced gameplay; a fair amount (see DS2: Broken World) to good amount of strategy (see DS1). In a DS game, THIS is what I really want out of the series and brand-name.

I think it was called DS3 for "brand recognition name" - you know, like many games that the publisher and IP-owner wants to have "re-imagined."

Honestly I would have much rather have had the cancelled Alien RPG they were going to make with that same engine.

I still would like to see that Aliens RPG, myself.

Though, Wasteland 2 and even the thought of Avellone wanting to do a Planescape: Torment spiritual successor sounds REALLY good. :)

This is partially why I bought YS Origin. I mean yeah YS: Origin is great, but also I would love more JRPG's both new and old on PC. I think I will still wait for a sale on Dark Souls since I did trade my PS3 copy in awhile back.

About 5 years ago when South Park was still decent I would of been like okay, this could work. Now after South Park to be going downhill and almost unwatchable for me, I could care less. I can tell how the game is going to turn out already story wise and well I don't want to relive a south park episode. I would rather just play a different RPG.

I definitely have apprehensions about Dark Souls being GFWL and was really, really unhappy about that, but now Gamersgate is reporting it as being Steamworks so I honestly have no clue what the hell is going on. I want to be optimistic and hope that they came to their senses and ditched the GFWL, but I just really, really doubt it.

Bandai even pretty much said they did the bare minimum to port it and nothing special for it being on the PC so I don't expect they ditched the obvious choice of just dumping over the achievments and what not from the 360 version in favor of something totally different and PC specific. I also don't know how hard or easy it is to add Steamworks integration, but XSeed added it to Ys and they're a really small outfit so I can't imagine it's that hard.

If you go to Dark Souls on steam under system requirements it says... "Online play requires software installation of and log-in to Games For Windows - LIVE"

Sorry Dark Souls I'll just play it on my Ps3 I wanted to support the PC version of this game but no thanks.

Well, it was likely called that because Square Enix was footing the bill and they had the rights to the DS franchise. Course, when you have a series and the original developer is long since gone, you are going to have differences.

Not defending DS3 in any way, just telling how it is.

Hopefully it's a good port. I know sadly a lot of "PC Users" were saying how they will pirate the game and not buy it now because it uses GFWL and also due to the developer saying the game wont run better at all on PC. Which is a shame people would treat From Software like that, I know they have never been a big pc publisher in fact I think they only made one Kings Field games of theirs on PC and only in Japan.

But they are one of the few developers were every game I play from them has some kind of personality from Dark/Demons Souls to Kings Field to Armored Core as well as 3D Dot Game Heroes. So if any publisher is worth the support it is From Software.

Only time will tell if hardcore PC users are willing to overlook the "console performance " and GFWL for network code the game is going to use and support them just for the sake of of them willingly to give the PC market a try. Or if From Software sees this as a reason to never try the PC market again.

P.S Also been playing Freedom Force what a amazing strategy game, and I am not even into comics like at all. If someone out there loves RPG's and Real-Time Pause tactics like in Baldurs Gate they should check out well worth the $10 I think the non sale price is for the pack.

Yeah, I understood their reasoning of not having a huge budget for the port so using GFWL with a 360 port made sense but I just hate GFWL soooo much.

Here are some of my fun GFWL stories for you to enjoy.

1. Release a new EULA but don't pop anything up. Instead give me generic error I have to look up and figure out it has something to do with not having agreed to a new EULA yet.

2. Buy some Fallout 3 DLC on GFWL because I couldn't get it else where. Have my entire Fallout game disabled after DLC is installed because I don't use the C drive and the DRM doesn't like that.

3. Mouse not lining up with where it was clicking on the GFWL client during an update. Best part about this was that every time I clicked ok it actually was hitting cancel. I was very confused as to why the update wouldn't install.

so i played some Kung Fu Strike, its pretty fun and cool lil beat em up title but the levels are very closed in and small but the graphics look nice. If u like kung fu then this is pretty good

When you have the developer basically saying they did jack squat to optimize it for the PC and essentially just did the bare minimum to get it on there and even had a hard time at that so don't get your hopes up, yeah not so encouraging.

The annoying thing is if it tanks because they totally half assed it they will blame it on there being no PC market for this sort of game, I know it.

*sigh*
Pools of Radiance, maybe? ;)
If you're referencing that terrible Ruins of Myth Drannor game that I actually have a CE of, then I'd agree, but the Gold Box series was one of the best CRPG series of all time (including everything). Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, and Pools of Darkness are genre classics of the first order.

But honestly I'd rather someone remade RoMD than play a South Park RPG. I guess lots of hip college kids will buy this, but I don't see a larger target audience.

RE: Dead Island GOTY. I can add it to my inventory when I buy it, with the 50 percent discount. So if people want Dead Island GOTY for 10 bucks and don't own the game, find a non-DLC owner and you should be able to get it for 10 bucks anytime, and insanely cheap during a sale. That is, provided it's intended behavior and doesn't get nuked.
