CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

Any thoughts on which Build A Bundle games are worth purchasing?

Thanks
I am so far out of the loop when it comes to pc gaming (just recently starting up again after years on consoles). I had no idea this bundle existed. Makes me wonder what other bundles I am missing out on. I almost bought sideway NY at the end of the steam summer sale.. Are there any other bundles I should be checking out besides this, indie gala and humble bundle? Thanks.

I loved Vice City, back in the day.
My favorite GTA game.

I wish they'd go ahead and do a Vice City 2.
I second that! GTA:V is going to be Los Santos again, but a much more detailed version at the current (or slightly later) time.

If you haven't played it already, get the Vice City Stories for PS2. Maybe a PS2 emulator has been perfected for the PC now too.
The graphics aren't quite "as good" but it's a worthy return to Vice City with a lot of new gameplay. Blows that somewhat boring Liberty City Stories out of the water too. (not talking about Episodes from Liberty City either, those 2 games were bad fvckin ass. especially that Lost and Damned)

Coulda swore I saw something about playing LCS and VCS on the PC awhile back, I'll check again.

Syberia 2, Dino D-Day, Hammerfight are the best 3. If you have one of those you can get Alien Breed: Impact, but Alien Swarm is better. If you got 2 of the best three, then just skip it.

The only advice I have for you is to avoid Dead Horde and Will Fight for Food. Crappy crap.
I'd like to make sure its known that this is just the Steam versions of the games. The actual ports themselves were fantastic, I used to play vice city/san andreas on pc all the time with countless mods and even with the multiplayer mods for each. I never had ANY problems with the vanilla games or with them modded to hell. I'm certain if you guys are having issues, its with the Steam copies specifically.
How about those helicopter flying portions? Those were some of the worst parts of the port by far.
So could I play Armored Princess and skip the other 2 King's Bounties? I'm slightly perplexed by this situation.

http://www.indieroyale.com/
King's Bounty: The Legend is the first part. Gameplay is similar, but the general "weak" story is before Armored Princess.

Since it's more about turned based strategy/combat, it doesn't matter too much. I've played a little KB and have tried to never lose a unit (maybe spent more time on this than I should), but always mess up with things like Marauders trying to get more gold, etc. or not having a rez ability left.

King's Bounty: The Legend is considered a pretty long long game on it's own so some people think Armored Princess is funner and doesn't drag on.

If you want to play in order, you play KB, then Crosswords and that's it. You can skip the plain AP.

In Armored Princess, I believe (since I haven't touched it yet), you play as Amelia (the armored princess) who makes sorta a cameo in the first one as a little girl.
A short sequence of events:
• I decide to spend my Saturday playing Gemini Rue.
• Down the adventure game rabbit hole
• I browse the dev sites for some of these games, like METAL DEAD, which is of interest particularly for it's 2-man dev team.
• Found a deal on it, woohoo!
FYI for anyone interested, Metal Dead and Gemini Rue (and Resonance, and the Blackwell games, and Ben There, and more) are built with Adventure Game Studio. There is an Android version of AGS that can be found here with instructions. Anyone with an Android phone/tablet can copy these games from their Steam (or Desura/DD) folders onto their device and play them on the go.
I have always assumed this is the case, and Jade Empire going on sale 1 day after the Summer Sale ended was as close to proof as I feel that I'll ever get.

The Steam deals thread at CAG is one of the biggest, most active game discussion threads on the internet, and it's steam-specific. While ppl at Valve were probably too busy during the summer sale to read every post, There are a few games that CAGs are always groaning about never going on sale: Jade Empire, Call of Cthulhu, and Morrowind. Even if their employees just casually browse our disussion thread over the past few years, they would know what our community wishlist looks like. :)
Watch some of them being CAGs. Right under our noses.

Maybe Valve will lurk here & just throw the CAG request-line a bone, again. :D

EDIT:
Matter of fact, if Valve's reading...
I'd love to see Driver: San Francisco at $5 or less;
Assassin's Creed Revelations - Gold Edition at $10 or less;
and Krater at $5 or less.
Skyrim $9.99, please oh great ones at Valve. :bouncy:

If valve is reading this... please make Half Life 3 to show everyone how to truly make a unique, innovative single player.

I've been itching to replay Half Life and finish HL2; these games regularly goes on sale right?
A short sequence of events:
...
• Having been checking in every day to see when the "Buy just 1 game" Build-a-Bundle day was going to happen, I notice that:
º PITMAN has been unlocked for all purchases
Actually, unless their meter is broken and they haven't gotten around to putting it up yet, Pitman is not unlocked. They seem to be stuck @~ 23k for a while now, which is probably why they got desperate and did a crappy move that kind of screwed over the existing buyers by adding these additional games.

And what I mean by that is BAB gets cheaper per game the more games you get, but those of us who already got in on it have to start a new one if we want those new games while those getting it now will potentially get a bigger bundle discount.

Thank you for posting that! That is really useful info to me.

I was actually looking at one of the Blackwell games that's for sale on the Google Play market and almost bought it, but I already own those games on Steam (and I think on GOG too IIRC). You saved me from triple dipping. :p

Anyway certain types of games I prefer to play on mobile when I can and point and adventure games tend to fall into that category, though there aren't a ton yet for Android.

I will warn you that I only ever tried it on my tablet and it's been months since I got rid of that device. I didn't care much for the control options but it's possible they've been improved since it gets updated frequently. The Blackwell games in the play store may work better if you have any issues with this. I'll probably try again on my phone sometime this week and find out for myself.

I'm in agreement that point and click adventure games are some of the few that I to play on a touch device and that so far Android seems really behind in the genre. You can actually get a lot of free games from the AGS website. It's mostly small indie projects by one or two people and few are any good. I think Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation has some stuff up on there. Most of it should be compatible and there's probably at least a couple that are worth checking out.

I already own KB: AP and the KB pack is the same price as Crossroads + Legend.

Can I buy the pack as a gift, gift myself Crossroads and Legend, then give away KB: AP?

This pack will most likely not give you an extra copy of AP.
I played Vice City on PC a long time ago, not on Steam, and it worked. Haven't tried the Steam version of it yet, I did try San Andreas Steam for about 30 minutes and aside from the crappy controller support it seemed ok if you had frame limiter enabled. Just sharing my experience with the games.
Yeah, I had a cd copy of Vice City that I played quite often and it ran way better than the steam version I downloaded. I'll try verifying the integrity though.

So if I missed a bundle (from Indie Gala, Build a Bundle, etc) it's not possible to still buy it, right?

Only during the original time it is on sale I assume?

I am really kicking myself that I didn't know about build a bundle 1 - since it's closed now and I can't get Sideway NY from them :(

I was thinking about picking up Dead Horde, Dino D-Day and Alien Breed: Impact from BaB2- but after M_F_A_H's comment about Dead Horde, maybe I will hold off on the whole thing.
I keep an eye on this thread to make sure I'm not missing anything and to see at a color-coded glance what does and does not activate on Steam: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2544489
Thanks for the link. I've noticed that CAGs seem pretty good alerting everyone about new bundles, and keeping their respective threads up-to-date, but that color-coded footnote thing is useful.

That is very cool. Touch screen devices seem like the perfect medium to play adventure games, but I have to question if the size of smartphone is large enough to play some of these games. After all, half the time you are looking for very small items in the environments. My guess is this would be best used on a tablet.

Right. These bundles are only available for the short time they're online (usually a week or two). You can sign up for their mailing lists, but I find that I usually find out about them through CAG or the Indie Bundle Steam group faster.

Last Indie question for me (for today at least) ;)

Is there a thread to trade codes from indie bundles? Some of the games I already have, so it would be nice to trade those with people looking for them...

There is a CAG Steam trading thread listed in the first post in this thread.

Do read the fine print of your bundles though, because some of them prohibit trading parts.

It's like you haven't heard the discussion on keys the last week. Steam gifts isn't for trading though.

The Steam group buy thread here on cag is for selling individual games and codes as well. I haven't had many bites when putting up a "have" list. I've had more success PMing folks that put up games you range with offers. Many many people that don't have indie bundle keys pass because they have it already out don't want it. Everyone that wanted it got it for cheap.

Wait which bundles does this apply to?

Yeah, I've been following the discussion. It was my understanding that the discussion had been centered around gifting the keys on steamgifts; I was asking if there was a trade thread for them on CAG.

I wasn't aware of restrictions on trading individual items; I thought the issue was only with giving them away on steamgifts.

Thanks for the clarification; I have been paying attention. :)

Any bundle that gives you multiple options to play a game you are generally not allowed to trade. The general line of thinking is if I trade you my Humble Bundle Steam keys, well, I've still got access to the DRM free versions to play. If they only provide you with one method, such as just a Steam key, and no desura or DRM free version, it's generally okay to do with as you will, though not technically always according to some TOS.. Anytime there's a possible "2 people playing from one purchase" scenario, even if you're an angel or owned the game already, it's generally not okay.

I mean, it's not like there's any real enforcement either way, but that's the generally accepted terms you agree too when you purchase these things.

I try to play them but I have no idea what I'm doing.

I own them all but I suck at it, I feel as if I'm just playing the tutorial and once it's done holding my hand I'm just in a big vat of suck.

I only tried the first one, do any of the other games have a better tutorial I can use to understand how to play the whole series?

It seems that all the threads discussing the proposed changes just went poof over there too so I have no idea what the hell is going on. What a mess.

http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/bOK...undle-keys-threads-are-disappeared/page/31337
I've never seen 3 more flawed suggestions in my life. All of them were 'almost' good, if you overlooked some major issues that just broke them.

They should just drop contributions altogether and leave it to -already- developed systems like groups. Contribution levels are what are getting some people to abuse bundles in the first place. Goofy suggestions like 'friending' people on Steamgifts ignores that those systems already exist within Steam and just makes every a convoluted mess.

Remove the incentive to gift bundled items by removing Contributions would solve the issue. If you don't want the world possibly winning your item, just limit it to a group. Solved.

Bundles were being abused FAR before contributors system was in place. When a new Humble Bundle debuted a year ago, the site would get flooded then too, and that was before even groups were in place.
These and Indie Royale (which is active now) are the big 4.

There's also Bundle in a Box which has had only one bundle so far, and Indie Face Kick which people have concerns about because of past unscrupulous advertising on their site. But if Humble, Gala, Royale, and Groupees are on your radar, those are the major ones.
I agree with you, but contributions probably increase steamgifts traffic. I'm sure there are a handful of people at steamgifts who love having high contributions totals. These people might not gift as much if they get rid of contribution status.

So I am playing Rig N Roll and well while it seems like a cool idea, the fact that every delivery is a race is kinda annoying. I mean if I am running low on fuel, but I still have time to do the delivery, I shouldn't have to not go for fuel just to get the maximum dollar amount and then backtrack just to fuel my truck.

I will play more though.

Not from those places. Humble Indie bundle in the past has had deals where they have gave buyers keys for old bundles that bought the current one. However, never heard any other companies doing that.

I would look at the PC game trade thread. Even though technically they are not supposed to be posted on there. I've seen them on there before.

Since there have been a lot of questions for a few days concerning Wanderlust and I only know of myself and someone else who took the plunge, I'll give a quick review of it (Though it turned out longer than expected):

Game GUI:

A lot of people saw the trailer and complained about it. Honestly, it's nothing like that. The screenshots that Steam show are a more accurate representation than the trailer. There's nothing particularly obtrusive about it and there is no GUI scaling, however I don't really feel it's needed. Here's a screenshot after I quickly loaded up the game:

Wanderlust.png

Yes, it's a very small screenshot. The game runs at that resolution but is stretched to 800x600 resolution I believe. You can stretch it to fullscreen in a 4:3 (black bars on right/left) by hitting F11 and honestly the game still looks fine. It's the way I play it and the people I play with. Nobody has had any complaints.

World Design:

Unfortunately there's not a whole lot to it. It's a room-to-room style game where you do what you need to on the current map (usually not very big) and then have everybody move to the exist to proceed after completing whatever objectives. Every small dot you move to on the world map will be a single 'room', however the bigger non-dot areas can include quite a few rooms back-to-back where you'll do a fair amount of traveling. This is more true later in the game where it's more back-to-back. So it's somewhat poor, I don't think I'd call it bad. It could easily be improved by just making the entire thing room-to-room without showing an over-world map.

Length and the ability to replay:

The game has 10 chapters and going through it on normal will probably take 3 hours on your first run. However after you beat normal, you unlock hard and then a third difficulty. Beating the normal difficulty is not actually beating the game, so it somewhat encourages you to replay through on the higher difficulty. You'll continually upgrade your character going through each difficulty, so you're not short of things to progress on. There's also a crafting system in the game, though it's not really in-depth and will take a bit of grinding to make anything really good. Once you beat the final difficulty, there isn't a whole lot to do unless you want to perfect every level to max out your character.

Characters/Classes:

There are four classes: Warrior, Alchemist (Rogue), Cleric and Elementalist. While they all play differently only Elementalist is very different than the rest. The reason I say that is because the first three are all close range fighters and use the arrow keys for hotkeys, which give them a much larger arsenal. Whereas the Elementalist only has two hotkeys and uses the mouse instead of the arrow keys for hotkeys. Warrior is more of a tank class with a shield, Alchemist can inflict numerous status effects through the use of potions and go invisible/backstab, Cleric can heal and has the ability to deal damage with healing as well as defend with a shield and finally the Elementalist can attack at a range with various elements and in later levels do some crazy AoE hits.

Combat:

It's pretty basic in the way it's a top-down 2D action adventure, much like Link to the Past is. Two classes have the ability to block and two can inflict statuses and move around the field much better than the rest. and enemies don't always stick to the closest target, which is especially true for bosses. If you're one of the three melee classes, you have eight hotkeys you can assign, however if you're an Elementalist, you only have two. Though the Elementalist lacks up for that in damage, however they can't take hits worth a damn at all.

If you play with a group of people, it's highly recommended that everybody picks a different class. Warrior makes a great tank, a cleric is indispensable with healing, an Alchemist has an utterly epic Soul Charge ability while having some very useful utility and the Elementalist is a crazy damage dealer. You can also respec any time at the lobby without any cost, so you can try various abilities without any real reprecussion.

Since I mentioned Soul Charge, in the game there is an orb you fill by dealing damage to enemies. Though I think it's based on actual hits and not damage, but I could be wrong. In multiplayer it's shared between the entire group and depletes when everybody dies or you complete a chapter. They are insanely useful to use and should be used against bosses or situations where you're struggling.

Leveling is a bit weird. When you beat a level in story mode, you're ranked by a certain % which is based off of points gained via medals earned. The points you get (50-100) will be given to you to distribute into skills. Ranking higher in the level you already completed gives you a difference in points. However if you hit 100%, you will get 200 points to distribute. Something I've only managed to get once.

One final thing is that later abilities use runes and putting points into skills that use the same runs will help augment each other to become stronger. This isn't true for all skills, however when playing a cleric my basic healing got a big boost when I purchased later skills.

Fun Factor:

I bought the 4-pack and gifted it out. The first day I played, it was just myself and a friend. Both of us were Elementalists and we were doing fine until we hit Chapter 5 I think it was. Then we just repeatedly died. While we could have made it further, it just wasn't as fun due to us picking the same class. However we finally got the third person in our party today and I re-rolled as a Cleric. So now we were a group of an Alchemist, a Cleric and an Elementalist. We fared so incredibly better and it made it much more enjoyable. We were able to help supplement each other and after leveling up a bit, everything just played a lot better. Once we're able to get the warrior into our group, I think it would be a lot more enjoyable and a bit less hectic.

So if you're playing with others, you'll find it enjoyable if you like some crazy shenanigans. However the single player I don't really think is worth it. There is a public server system in place and if you're hosting a server, you'll need to port forward a single port.

Story:

Wat. I lol'd.

Game Issues:

There are however some issues with the PC version currently. That is the ability to change your keybindings. While it's in the game, you are unable to change any keybindings as it freezes your session. The developers know about this and are working on a fix. The second issue is that the controller doesn't work properly with the Elementalist by default and if you try and change keybindings, you will run into issues. Finally my group of people have also run into an issue trying to figure out how to use Soul Charge as an Elementalist since they only have two hotkeys. All other classes have the ability on their hotkey button, but I'm sure we're missing something (like looking at options to see the actual non-hotkey keybind).

There's also a post I read where people mention they can't get past chapter 3, but I've had zero issues completing all 10 chapters on normal.

Overall:

If you've got a group of people to play with, I'd say it's a fun little game to play. Especially if you don't mind going through the story multiple times to try and max out your character. However if you're a solo player, then I don't really think I could recommend this game at all to you. The more people (up to 4) you play with, the better it is.

You should try 18 Wheels of Steel. As far as I remember each delivery is just that a delivery where you start in a lot and have to hitch the trailer and then all you do is get on the road and drive to your destination while obeying every rule of traffic. And if you run a stop light/sign or fail to put your turn signals on then you get a fine and that is how they deduct the money that comes out of your pay/bank.

Actually I have tried 18 wheels of steel, although not the Steam version. I like the mechanics of Rig N Roll just not the racing aspect of it. 18 Wheels of Steel has this problem where is too much of a sim where yeah I have to watch my speed and stuff, which gets annoying because the truck handles way better in Rig N Roll.

Why am I comparing two trucking simulators, what is wrong with me?
