CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

If you registered with the HiB website, you should be able to see all your bundles/keys there.

I think he was saying Atom Zombie Smasher was in a humble bundle. AFAIK Flotilla hasn't been in a bundle and I have all of the humble bundles to date.. I would know.

Oh DUH. I was wondering why I wasn't seeing it.

Oh well, now I have to figure out if I want to pay $2.50 for Rasta cats in space or wait. I probably should wait.

They say I didn't activate R.U.S.E. that I won in a giveaway months ago, it shows up in my Library, product page says that I already own it, and I clicked that I received it on the site, wtf are the admins (Raiden) smoking!?!

Oh and this little gem:

Oh, and I synced my account literally yesterday!
Uh oh. I accepted a win on sg but declined the game because I already won from the giver (Oh! From you. Thanks walks!). I guess I'll tell you what those consequences are.

Yes, that's what I meant... sorry for the confusion. Flotilla has not been in a bundle. Was confirming AZS was in HiB so Flotilla will likely be in a bundle at some point.

I was just going through all the humble bundles I've bought, and I wish I could easily tell which keys have been redeemed, since there are a few duplicates and I know I've given a few keys to my friends. I suck at record-keeping :p

The Book of Unwritten Tales
http://store.steampowered.com/app/215160/
It looks decent but it also seems like something that will have a strong Euro following who will probably keep the price high for a while, although apparently it has been out for some time prior to this Steam release as there is a thread about it on GOG from 2011.

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/the_book_of_unwritten_tales/page1

Also the Gamersgate page lists the DRM as "other DRM" which kind of makes me nervous.

Funny, that's why I stopped getting Groupons. It just got too out of control to figure out what was redeemed and what wasn't.

With the indie bundles I try to enter the keys ASAP so I don't forget but there's probably a few I already owned that could have been given away.

My review of Orcs Must Die 2 is more or less based off of the last one. It has more to do, works great in co-op and has more customization. Went halfway through the main levels and still have classic/endless as well as getting max skulls on levels. Feels a bit more like an expansion though.

Yeah, I had the same problem with Groupons. It would be nice if the humble bundle site had a way to "check off" which keys have been redeemed in your account. That would make things a lot easier!

$30.00? Bleh.

And totally off topic, I'm really enjoying The Dream Machine. Anyone else playing it?

It's not Steam but Greenman has Horse Racing Manager for $2.48 on sale.

http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/us/en/pc/games/simulation/horse-racing-manager/

It's apparently got multiplayer too and the one review called it "amazing" ;)

Anyway, if it's terrible it trades back in for $1.50. Hmm...

OTOH Gamershell seemed to think it was meh

I've said this before in another thread, but Adventure games for Europeans = $30? Wow, what a great deal! Shut up and take my money!

don't regret paying that much for it but eh try the demo(tiny size game is 80 something mb) and has been a while so may show up bundled eventually.

You do only have a set number of turns before it ends, more with hardcore mode.

Does Steamgifts email you if you win? I was reading their FAQ and it said something about a green banner on their site, but I didn't see anything about email. Maybe I missed it.

Nope, there is no email for winning. Though you'll probably get one from Steam saying you've received a gift, which is a good indication you won.
The standard controllers were unique (as seen in that video posted), but the real stars were the Super Action Controllers (see below) which may be among the largest handheld controllers ever made, the trackball, and the steering wheel. I actually just got a complete ColecoVision with 14 games and manuals and, best of all, the complete Roller Controller in its box. Traded a bag of 80's toys I'd gotten at a garage sale for the lot. The toys cost me seven bucks.

I have a text file on my desktop that I append with Steam keys from bundles for games I already had along with links to the bundle web pages. It's not the most elegant system, but I'm able to keep up with it and see at a glance what I have to offer others (in situations where giving away a key isn't frowned upon, of course ;) ).
Nope, there is no email for winning. Though you'll probably get one from Steam saying you've received a gift, which is a good indication you won.
Correct. This is how I was aware of my first win. The host of the drawing emailed me my gift before I saw indication on the site. But Steamgifts itself does not email you.
I love my TouchPad too! I haven't done too much gaming on it (beyond Where's My Water, because that shit's addictive) but it's definitely great for surfing the internet from the couch.
Same here you need to install CM9. I got so many new apps it's crazy.
Ha, speaking of CAGaming, I have a Touchpad running CM9 as well. At least I can make use of those Android indie bundles!
That was my sole reason for buying the Indie Gala mobile. I wish I would have bought the old Humble one.
Just wait until Faerie Soltaire 2 officially comes out for Android. Man that game is addicting and even more so on mobile. :p
I still need to play the first one. Maybe, after Coconut Queen. :)
I like WebOS a lot. Is CM9 really worth the effort for a touchpad?
I think it is and it's really not that tough to dual boot. Plus, you still have WebOS if you need it for anything.
Totally worth the effort. When I first got the TouchPad there was no Netflix app for WebOS (I haven't been keeping up on WebOS though, so that could have changed... I doubt it though :p) so that was kind of the main catalyst for me to actually root the touchpad to put Android on it. There are also so many more apps available in the Android market compared to WebOS's... including the Steam mobile app :D

Also, you do have the ability to dual boot. You can boot into either OS as you please, so it's not like CM9 completely deletes WebOS from your touchpad.
Exactly! Oh yea that reminds me, I need to download the Steam mobile app on my touchpad.
I found the conversion painless. I also loved WebOS, but haven't booted backing into it since installing IceCreamSandwich. Interestingly, I switched it to android because the WebOS browser didn't support the ampersand character in urls, and I couldn't jump to "last read" item in this forum.

So it was CAG that got me to switch to android :D

I've played Farie Alchemy on it a bit, and minecraft.

The camera still doesn't work, but they got the microphone working in the last month or two.
Minecraft is ridiculous! I need to buy the full version of that game so my creations can be saved.

Welcome to the CAG Steam forum! We're a little crazy, but overall a good group of CAGs.

Because indie games are terrible and anything that sets back their cause helps real gaming.

Actually, I'm more interested in any situation where an indie game is rated fairly. Calling a bad game a bad game helps everyone. It's a sad situation (It's always a sad situation when a bad game is made, hence why indie games are the saddest genre out there) but for good stuff to blossom, people have to realize what doesn't work and properly call it rather than letting the indie luster blind them.

You can't make a game unbad by wishing it to be so.

But yeah mostly I hate indie games. Except for the ones that are good, but if they were good they'd be real games not indie games.

EDIT: I AM still upset that Wanderlust is a top seller and Kung Fu Strike isn't. Yes, the fellow up thread can't run it which sucks all kinds of eggs, but Wanderlust is giving lots of people similar problems.

That said, just geographically, Wanderlust is more likely to be fixed. KFS is made by the damn Chinese so you can't be sure they're going to give you support, which is a shame because it is a fine game in and of itself. If it were 2D and with bright pastels, it would sell like hotcakes.

RollingSkull even hates VVVVVV. Which is like the greatest game ever. Far better than any AAA game that was released that year.

(trololol?)

*disclosure: VVVVVV is still awesome anyways, and I don't remember what else happened that year. May also be an opinion. Which might not even be a true opinion anyways.

Re: Orcs Must Die 2. I don't regret preordering it (got it for about $11 in one of the two packs) and I doubt it'll be on sale for another three or four months (unlike the first that was released like a month prior to the major Steam sales). As others mentioned it improves on basically every aspect of the first. The skull/upgrade system in particular is really nice. The campaign itself is a bit short (already half-way finished on 'normal/warmage' difficulty in about three hours) but then there's the ten levels from the original adapted to co-op, nightmare difficulty, and endless mode. Overall I'm sure I'll put a good 15-20 hours into it. I guess you could say it feels like an expansion but, then again, its $15 base price and there are no shortage of people today (even on here) that will rush to pay $50ish for the latest AAA releases which rarely take more than ten or so hours to finish.

I made a big deal during the summer sale about Splinter Cell Conviction having always-on DRM even though it was reportedly patched out. I just wanted to provide a follow-up on how I solved this. Uplay version 2.0.3 and 2.0.4 were somehow preventing my game from updating itself and patching the DRM out. I uninstalled Uplay and then allowed Splinter Cell to install an old version of Uplay 1.x which then patched my game before updating itself. Always-on DRM is now gone! Watch out, it seems to have deleted some save files when I uninstalled it.

Ubisoft support were of absolutely no help, I went back and forth with them 5 or 6 times and they just kept giving me canned responses like "how to launch Uplay in offline mode" or "make sure to open these ports on your router".

The latter is about what I expect of support, but that mess with the Uplay confirms it. There just is no value add AT ALL with UbiDRM, no matter what the Ubisoft losers might think. That's sad to hear, and sadder now that D:SF is going to be the last Ubisoft game I will buy (new) for a very long time.

I do think Conviction is worth the effort you went through though, but you have to be game for the co-op mode or at least the random guard single maps mode. The campaign is fun but seems afraid to really just throw you into an area to do stealth.

I know what you mean. People here will scoff at the idea of spending $15 for a game like this but won't hesitate to pay over $100 for a Collector's Edition of a game they can get for $40 in a month or two.

I got more than my money's worth with the first one buying it this weekend. Even at $11, I'm sure I'll get the same enjoyment from the sequel thanks to co-op and an upgrade system that encourages experimentation.

If anyone wants to play it, I'm icedrake523 on Steam.

FWIW I just went through all my games that I am aware of that are published by Ubisoft and thankfully only a couple actually used Uplay. One of those I traded for and the other was gifted. I generally make it a policy not to support Ubisoft except in rare cases where there is no 3rd party DRM like Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, Shoot Many Robots, or Rayman: Origins.

Anyway, I checked Chrome and was rather alarmed to find Uplay installed as a plugin since I honestly don't remember installing it or okaying it to be installed. I disabled it in Chrome and closed Chrome out, then downloaded the Uplay installer off of Ubi's site, installed it, ran it, connected to my account and checked the log to make sure it was the latest update. It was; 2.04.

Then I went into From Dust and PoP: Forgotten Sands, made sure those were registered at least once, then set Uplay to always default to offline mode. Now those games will run in (supposedly) offline mode for Uplay. I also checked back in Chrome and the Uplay plugin there is still disabled.

Apparently I can run those games now on this computer without ever having to allow Uplay browser or net access but it's still more hoops then I should have had to go through as a paying customer on Steam who already verifies that I own the games in question.

TL;DR: You can disable the UPlay browser addons and set UPlay to always start offline as long as you've activated your games by allowing UPlay to connect to the net at least once.

A few months back, I started subconsciously reading all of RollingSkulls posts as if he were drunk when he wrote them. When I realized I was doing it, I figured out how fun it was. Try it! Go back and read some of them, only in the voice of a guy sitting at a bar drinking whiskey and bitching about things :)

RS, no disrespect intended of course. I appreciate your posts and your refusal to ascribe to groupthink.

Ubisoft really screwed themselves, I'm trying to do a google search for my Uplay game patching issue and can't get anything useful cause all it's finding is page after page of results about the browser security hole thing.

Is there a list of games that use Uplay? I have several Ubisoft games, but only 3 of them are installed right now (Assassin's Creed II, Dark Messiah Might & Magic, Heroes of Might and Magic V). There is no mention of uplay on the steam page for any of those 3 games, but that's obviously no guarantee. I tried to find a list of games through google, but like Solid-Snake-Eyes said, it's page after page of stories about the security issue.

Too much work for me. I have enough games in my backlog, I see no reason to support a shitty publisher so long as they make me, an actual paying customer, jump through so many hoops just to enjoy the game I legally purchased.

Glad to hear you resolved all them issues - albeit on your own with no help from ubisoft. All of that aside, how are you enjoying the game? Worth the trouble?

Actually, I'm more interested in any situation where an indie game is rated fairly. Calling a bad game a bad game helps everyone.
Your logic is so broken it hurts. Yes, bad indie games exist. But they're bad because they're bad, not because they're indie. Heck, the vast majority of major releases are absolute rubbish. Even the ones that are celebrated are often generic or bug-ridden. And then you have the movie tie-ins, etc.

Indie games are developed by a guy in a basement, or a small team. Sure, there are many failures. But you also get masterpieces, and true innovation.

But you know that. Don't know why you think it's cool to trash people that pour their life's energy into creating something that all of us here love (games) but if that's the role you want to play on the internet, go for it. Really sad, if you ask me.

Truth spoken here. :applause:

I think he inferring that reviewers mark games up when they are indie, ie if a big studio like Ubisoft put out Limbo, it would not have gotten a score as high as it did.

At least that is how I read the comment.

I read everyone as if this were true.

Except the Amazon Rep Tony. I imagine him sitting on a yacht drinking an appletini surrounded by five almost-Playboy women of varying ethnicities in his only slightly ajar silk robe. Every time he posts, he's actually telling a henchwench to type it for him as he pets his pet puppy and plots his next sale.

I imagine him sailing up and down the East Coast, just inside international waters, but within range of a satellite internet connection. Best Buy sends Geek Squad (Black Ops Division) to try and take him down, but they're having trouble locating him. The last time they did, he activated his boat's submersible mode and evaded them. Gamestop hackers try to hack his connection, but his Playboy models have been trained in anti-hacking protocols and keep him just ahead of digital attacks. Gamefly launched a ground-to-sea missle, but missed.

None of it makes him miss a drop of his appletini. Yeaaah...
