CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Someone mentioned controller support for Noitu Love 2, was that a wish, or does it have controller support? It doesn't look like something easily handled by Xpadder.
Noitu Love 2 is MADE for mouse play. Xoda snaps to your mouse cursor to charge in and beat people up, and the right mouse button drops a shield which really needs to be placed with full control to survive the bosses. The two extra characters aim with the mouse and one needs it to clear obstacles.

Your other hand controls the basic non-snap movement, jumps, dodges, et al. There is no way to do this well with controller

My main problem is that my left hand is pretty much an idiot. I can handle first-person WASD controls, but the quicker nature of side-scrollers is very difficult for me on a keyboard in any configuration. Most of the time, I can't get to jumping until I've been running against the wall for a second or two
Considering they haven't even put the last two stuff packs out on Steam and are mum about whether the upcoming expansion will be released there I'm not getting my hopes up for much regarding the Sims and Steam these days.
Ya our best hope now is like a Complete package as they did re-release Crysis 2 in a package like that IIRC.
300 baud rocking CompuServe, Q-Link, BIX, GEnie, and lots of BBS.

I'm apparently the grandfather of the group.
not a grandfather, but right there with you. i think i actually had a 110 baud before the 300? maybe? apple II+.

bbs's all the way. the virtual world is a different place now.

Who remembers the Commodore64 days, where you'd go into a store and buy the pages upon pages of programming sheets instead of the game itself, go home and spend hours typing in the code, only for it not to run cause you screwed up and mistyped a letter, or a line was out of place? Huh, anybody?!? I'm only 30 and God I feel old. I remember the first game I bought on disk, Quantum Command, it sampled Bill Paxtons voice from Aliens saying "Game over man, Game Over!" everytime you crashed your ship. Of course that wasn't among the very first games I played. That honor goes to Burger Time, Mickey's Space Adventure, The Search for the Holy Grail, and Treasure Island.

We need Infocom games on Steam. ;)
Same reason the Humble Indie Bundle makes boatloads of money. It's a brand, a style. People want to buy "indie games" in a bigger way than they want to buy the actual games themselves.
It does seem like running these bundles must be some easy money, when you look around and see four of 'em running at a time.

Glad I didn't get a free Virus Named Tom code. I am THOROUGHLY impressed by the production values and the exploration of the concept but it just isn't the sort of game I want to play.

Noitu Love 2 is chaotic. That's normal. Just enable the double-tap special movies and use those to cross large areas quicker. They're much more useful as quick dodge escapes when the boss does a counter attack and dash moves for general speed.

Wait! Was this really a thing people had to do? I mean I knew about punch code programming but I never knew back in the old days you had to program your own games that is just crazy talk :D

Less easy for Indie "Welp, can't meet our goals, time for another Happy Hour!" Gala it seems.

Oh, God... Machine code. It wasn't even like good ole BASIC where you could see you spelled GOTO as GOOT, instead you just had nine thousand lines of:
A0EE 45BD 0GF1 1BA7 9HAB 3CAD

Even thinking about it gives me a headache. I used to visit computer shows just to buy floppies from sellers who'd sell disks with all of that month's programs on it. I know eventually the publishers started offering the same but it was cheaper to just get the ones I wanted and the cost was less per disk as well.

Here's a page of machine code from Compute! Gazette. Look upon it and despair...

Edit: Yes, this means my above example was "Wrong". It was even worse than I remembered it. I have all the Compute! Gazettes on PDF just out of nostalgia but I can't say I spend a lot of time reading 30 year old code for pleasure.

Ah ha! This has code more like I faked above. Good to know I'm not senile or anything and I had some basis in reality... http://i.imgur.com/f6qCs.jpg

What walkonshadows said... brain... cannot... compute!

Haha.

The PLAN:

If someone "bites" on buying my SR3 Franchise before Friday, I get Unwritten Tales before Friday.

If I don't sale my extra SR3 before Friday, eh, it's payday, so I'm just buying Unwritten Tales anyway.

There. The PLAN in all its glory. Bathe in it.

Funny thing is the only reason I know about punch cards, Is my former high school programming teacher used to work at NASA and always talked about how easy we have it now days; and how back in the day with punch card programming one little mistake or god forbid you dropped the shoe box would cost you days of reorganizing the cards. It was like Programmer PTSD war stories.

That is just utter chaos. I really should consider myself lucky that I grew up playing games in the time of cartridge and C drives. I could not imagine waiting for a game, saving up allowance money, driving anxiously to and from the store; and then having to spend the next few days entering in lines of QX 820 DATAARTIST, and so on.

I can just see some poor kid sitting in their room going, "Man I really need a caculator program for my math homework due tomorrow, Well I better get programming then"

No wonder why so many older geeks now have glasses!
I used to visit computer shows just to buy floppies from sellers who'd sell disks with all of that month's programs on it.
And thus were born the first indie bundles. :)
People he is giving these away via Humble's site. It will be in one of their bundles sooner or later along with 6 other games for a $1 minimum so you know you will be getting it.
I'll wait for the bundle, don't wanna frustrate myself with the few hours I have off before I'm off to work again.

Well, there WERE "normal" games for sale in nice boxes with manuals and ready to go on a 5.25" floppy disk, of course. It was the magazines that'd getcha. The games were often sort of lame but there were often graphic or application programs that you couldn't just buy from the store.

OKay, now I'm getting a complex.

Is it really that illogical or are you guys just making fun of me because of the 300 baud modem comment a couple posts back? :)

This isn't the trade thread, but I'll give you $11 for it. Having to cough up $7 come payday vs. having to cough up $18 is worth thinking about, or if your Canadian, thinking aboot.
BTW, thanks for exposing me to the game, wishlisted.

Why am I playing Virtual Families when I have The Sims 3, Pets, and Midieval? I have three vastly superior versions of the same thing, and yet I'm playing Virtual Families. :???:

Some men (and or women) just want to watch the world burn.

So for you YS: Origins owners, I found that the Soundtrack is located in the Steam Folder. It's in .ogg otherwise known as ogg vorbis format. So you will have to convert it if you want to play it on most mp3 players.

Yes the soundtrack to that game is that good I went searching for it .

Which reminds me I need to play that train wreck soon. I have every damned Sims 3 pack released on Steam (but no Katy Perry! *sob*) but right now I think I'd rather play virtual families too. Thanks for reminding me of that. :p

All of the Falcom games have amazing music. Even in the 80s they did wonders with MIDI.

Oh god, while I have never done anything that hardcore, I did take a class in college that was about C and Assembly Language. Assembly Language is too hardcore for me as you start getting into things like Mov ax, Mov dx, ax and so on. I now hate Assembly Language .
Why am I playing Virtual Families when I have The Sims 3, Pets, and Midieval? I have three vastly superior versions of the same thing, and yet I'm playing Virtual Families. :???:
While I don't own Virtual Families, I had a same why am I playing this moment. I was like ok why have I played twice as much Rig N Roll as I have Ys Origin. Ys Origin is easily 10x better, but then I realized. I kinda enjoy bad things such as video games, movies, etc. It's an addiction. You start at one bad game and it's your gateway drug, because then you see other crappy games and it's like I wanna see how horrible it is. I know it's bad but I wanna see how bad it really is.

I also think the big boxes were cool. They had the manuals and some other stuff and the floppy.. There was no actual reason for the boxes to be as big as they were.. They are mostly in my basement with manual and everything. Although I do keep a few in my room like Dr. Dooms revenge, Megaman, Ninja Gaiden and 2..

I really liked the big boxes for PC games. Sure they took up a ton of space, but just the amount of artwork and care that went into the packaging really showed. Plus I love getting a real instruction manual, not these cheap ass 10 page books nowadays. Say what you want about Blizzard but I love their packacking because you get the game in a cardboard box, and you get a hefty fucking manual.

Yeah, those big manuals are the thing I miss most with games these days. Most games if they even come with a manual anymore its just so thin and feels cheap.
I just had a very cool chat with the Head Mod at SteamGifts.
I post it below for your consideration. Many of you are aware of my troubles with the site in the past few days, and the site was being discussed in detail even before that in this thread. CQ is an awesome guy. I had never met him before last night, but I agree with the sentiment spoken about him before that he is a very level headed and even tempered person. I have high hopes for the site, especially since it looks like after reading my support ticket, instead of simply penalizing the mods responsible, it seems he'll be removing them outright. That's alot or pressure and added responsibility on CQ, and so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas they wanted me to relay in my next chat with him.

Never tell your password to anyone.
cg: hey
walkonshadows: yes Sir?
cg: how's your day going?
walkonshadows: ok so far, are you about to screw it up with bad news? lol
cg: why would I have bad news?
walkonshadows: because that's usually the question people ask me before they give bad news.
cg: I thought it was 'are you sitting down?'
walkonshadows: that's for really bad news.
cg: Updated your username on steamgifts
walkonshadows: I saw that, but couldn't say thanks cause the topic was closed. but Thanks You.
cg: As for the other ticket, completely agree, the mods are a little aggressive.
cg: Partly my fault, because they are trying to manage a couple hundred thousand people, but at the same time, there's really no reason for some of those comments.
walkonshadows: But they lifted the bans (all 3 of them) early, so I can't say much. Just thought someone should see it. No hard feelings.
walkonshadows: and thankyou for looking at it to begin with, it's obvious you are busy as hell with that site.
cg: It's definitely a challenge.
cg: I think I'll be removing the moderators, and try to handle it myself until they have more tools at their disposal.
cg: Right now they get frustrated, because they have thousands and thousands of support tickets telling them to do this, and
that, while they have limited powers on the site. People point fingers, accuse them of not caring, and they lose their temper.
walkonshadows: how are you going to handle that much more load on your shoulders then?
cg: I'll try to spend another few hours a day handling support tickets.
walkonshadows: the site's only getting bigger by the day, the more automated you make it, the easier.
cg: I try to automate as much as possible.
cg: Removing giveaways, rerolling giveaways, etc, can't really be automated
cg: Allowing users to remove their own giveaways causes some problems. We'd need to setup a limit on the number they can delete, and even then, the entire delete system would need to be recoded first.
cg: There's the issue of points being distributed when giveaways are created, and then if a user spends those points and the
giveaway is removed, what happens? We send that user into the negative points? Also, people trolling, 'hey, I'm giving away
valve complete pack', and then right before it ends, they remove it.
cg: With rerolling giveaways, we can't have users constantly rerolling their winners on their won. We get the issue of 'hey, I
won that giveaway fair and square, why was it given to someone else?'
cg: *on their own
walkonshadows: couldn't checking the accounts for whether the winner posted the game to his account be automated? That would cut down on some tickets, the ones that claim winner never recieved, and you could prevent people regifting by locking out
being able to put up (relisting) a game won for 3 months or so. I had the thought that the point system should be based off of what you put up to giveaway, but I see problems with that as well.
cg: A number of games don't appear on Steam accounts, mostly DLCs. For those, we really have no way to verify if it was
redeemed. Unless of course we add them as a friend, go through the checkout process of sending them that DLC, and see if Steam
gives an error saying they already own it.
walkonshadows: This has actually been a deep discussion on CheapAssGamer since the new rules on bundle keys, would you mind if I poll them to see if anyone has better ideas, get back toy you?
walkonshadows: completley cutting out mods is going to be quite the undertaking.
cg: I follow most of the cag threads
cg: Signed up the other day, waiting for posting permissions
cg: I try to keep up with all the topics on cag, gog, reddit, giantbomb, etc
cg: Usually just lurk, and keep an eye out for suggestions and what people like/dislike
walkonshadows: I will say that after my first Steam Summer Sale, I ended up with pretty much everything I wanted, so I started
contributing more that entering giveaways. I hope the contributor system does go away, it encourages people to create more of the reason people go to the site to begin with. At the same time, there will always be people trying to take advantage and exploit.
walkonshadows: oops, meant to say "does not go away"
cg: Yep, I think we'll keep it around
cg: We'll see how the new update works out
walkonshadows: I wish you luck. Dinner's here. It's been a pleasure cq.
cg: Thanks for the feedback, enjoy your dinner
walkonshadows: chicken strip basket from DQ, no worries.
walkonshadows: :)

Great talk, good to see someone stepping up for the bullshit they did to your account.
Someone mentioned controller support for Noitu Love 2, was that a wish, or does it have controller support? It doesn't look like something easily handled by Xpadder.
I don't know, Xpadder can do quite alot with a little tweaking
the virtual world is a different place now.
This reminded me of a project/essay/presentation a while back in my Networking course; I reported on Usenet and my heart sank when I started off asking if anyone knew ANYTHING or had even heard of Usenet...and only one guy said "well, I've heard the name before"
Which reminds me I need to play that train wreck soon. I have every damned Sims 3 pack released on Steam (but no Katy Perry! *sob*) but right now I think I'd rather play virtual families too. Thanks for reminding me of that.
I put The Sims 2 on my backlog when it came out; I only played like 2 minutes of it...just couldn't get into it and now with The Sims 3 and all its expansion packs too, I'm never gonna catch up my Sims expiereice. I think I just burned out after The Sims hit its 3rd or 4th expansion pack, lol
I freely admit I am all about some bad games along with the odd surprisingly good even though I expected it to be bad, right now.

I think all the Bad Rats talk a while back was my gateway drug and then it just sort of snowballed from there. Once I went to look I was amazed how many truly horrid (Henry) games there are.

Anyway they can provide lots of entertainment and amusement in their own special way.
Noitu Love 2 is chaotic. That's normal. Just enable the double-tap special movies and use those to cross large areas quicker. They're much more useful as quick dodge escapes when the boss does a counter attack and dash moves for general speed.
Mayhaps, but even in slower-paced 2D games, keyboard is a stumbling block. My skill level goes up significantly on 2D games if I can use a controller.
Also, not to dredge this nonsense up, but I just cannot believe people take my mindless kneejerk hatred of indie games too seriously. I find the schtick endlessly hilarious because of how absurd it is on its face. I mean, come on, INDIE games? There are maybe characteristics of them you can hate but just because indie?

Just imagine this scene for a second. A new humble bundle hits. I am sitting back at my computer, feet on the desk, smoking a cigar. I key in "$0.01", slide the sliders up to 100% Humble Tip. Taking a puff of my cigar, I pull it out, staring at the computer with a wry sneer. "Here's a humble tip for ya, kid," I call out, condescension dripping from my voice, "Make real games next time. Not indie crap." With a deep, throaty laugh, I slam my hand on the enter key, completing the purchase. Then I get up, walking away, not even playing the games, a smugly satisfied grin on my face.

I mean, that's how I think I come across, and it's hilarious and stupid all at once. I cannot fathom people taking me that seriously.

Secret Director's Cut Ending: As I leave, I turn back to the screen. The camera zooms in. "Humble Indie Bundle 14!" Panning down, past "Beat the average bonus: Retro Pixel Indie Platformer 9!" The camera settles on the dollar revenues from the sale. "$14,220,095..." Second pass, it ticks over to "$15,119,044." I snarl, shaking my fist at the ceiling, "DAMN YOU INDIE GAAAAAAMES!"
Are you petting a white cat while shaking your other fist at the ceiling?
Didn't know but Awesomenauts is already out.
Gah! I never fired up the beta once! Oh well.
I was lucky enough to get a key for A Virus Named Tom, and I've installed it and played a few minutes of it (enough to gold all 4 levels of the first stage.)

Thoughts:
Thank you for this. We seem to have the same tastes/manias. I know now not to bother.
I buy old boxed PC games now just to pore over the included manuals and catalogs. My wife rolls her eyes, but I love revisiting the good old days in this manner. :D

If you guys want a big ass PC game box now, 3 words

Skyrim Collector's Edition.

Thing is ridonkulously huge. I've had appliances come in smaller boxes.
300 baud rocking CompuServe, Q-Link, BIX, GEnie, and lots of BBS.

I'm apparently the grandfather of the group.
I remember those too! BBS was awesome. Nothing like getting the phone bill after a few months of bbs and your parents getting pissed caused there was 100s of calls to the same local number. It was after that we got unlimited local calls with our telephone service plan.
not a grandfather, but right there with you. i think i actually had a 110 baud before the 300? maybe? apple II+.

bbs's all the way. the virtual world is a different place now.
bbs were awesome! Yes, the internet today is like night and day compared to bbs.
Yes!!!! Commodore 64 was great but those programming sheets were horrible. I got most of my software via "sharing".

Hell yes! I still have my Diablo II CE box that thing was huge! I still have my Quake III arena, Baldur's Gate :), Planescape Torment, Xcom, Fallout 1 and 2, Crusader No Remorse, Starcraft, Elder Scrolls Daggerfall (fuck yea!), System Shock II, Kingpin, etc.

I have a wallpaper on my pc of the top PC games of the 90's and it brings me back.... :)

Trying to organize an online game in the past was like coordinating a space shuttle launch. So, much checking and rechecking settings, opening ports, typing ip's, etc.

It's such a relief today to simply send an invite to friend and they can jump into your game.

I started years ago watching Angry Video Game Nerd episodes. When you just hear him say how shitty x game is well I felt the need to try them. Then I got addicted from there. It has become so bad I have played every Action 52 game for both NES and Genesis.
And thus were born the first indie bundles. :)
This made me giggle.

Also all of this talk neither makes me feel old nor young. I feel right in the middle haha. I grew up watching my dad go and punch code and do all of that crap and show me how stuff was done.

So after putting so much time into Drakensang (Amazing RPG) and looking forward to the sequel I also got during the sale. I come to find out the studio went bankrupt nearly two years ago so now there is no chance of getting anymore games in the series.

Sometimes being a CAG has it downsides, poor little German game studio. If only I knew your games were worth full price 4 years ago; If only!?!

P.S Plus they brought us Paws and Claws:pet Vet winner of 49 Game of the Year rewards from veterinarians

This is my afro-muppet looking Virtual Families dude Paulino.

He is a beginner video game designer who hates bees and fog.

If it makes you feel any better, The Chains of Satinav takes place in the same world as Drakensang, though it's an adventure game, not an RPG.

There's also a Drakensang Online which surpisingly doesn't look too terrible for a browser based MMO. :p

Anyway, The Dark Eye is basically German's D&D so there should be other games set in that world that may come out in the future though a direct sequel to Drakensang is highly unlikely.

That totally sounds like something I would buy!

To derail the computing nostalgia derail back to my earlier Android touchpad derail, just want to say getting android on the touchpad was easy. Android is great but I don't stream enough. I still vastly prefer WebOS.
