CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
If this helps or hurts people, Elder Scrolls fan from way back.

Daggerfall - Great ES game but it was a product of it's era.
Morrowwind - Awesome. Especially the 2 expansions. Added a ton of content. I seriously spent months in that game.
Oblivion - Ok. The best thing to do was avoid the main storyline all together. It really wasn't all too hot IMO. I did, however, truly enjoy the Knights of Nine expansion. The other expansion was ok but I didn't care for it.
Skyrim - I really have enjoyed Skyrim. The best parts of I liked about Morrowwind (i.e. sometimes, you just shouldn't be trying to fight a dragon at level 1 and expect to win) and what I liked about Oblivion (i.e. much bigger environment, more stuff to do in the way of quests and side quests) and mooshed it together.

I bit on Dawnguard yesterday after hemming and hawing. I spent around 5-6 hours last night just PLAYING Skyrim and I never once came into contact with anything. Not saying I went out of my way looking but in playing I found all sorts of other stuff in Skyrim I hadn't already done so I got tied up with that. (not to mention, I spent about 30 minutes trying to kill a dragon priest with a level 4 mage... I did not win...) Once I get to the actual Dawnguard content, I'll let you know my opinion but again... it'll just be MY opinion, not some reviewer who does it far more eloquently than I.
Very informative, thanks.
Yeah I've only played Oblivion and Skyrim. Your right about Oblivion, the best of it is certainly outside the main storyline. Some of the side quests are a major surprise as well. It's amazing to see the sheer detail Bethesda puts into their games and the same applies to New Vegas.

They aren't about being seriously challenging RPGs like the 90s, but rather a lively fantasy experience and exploration of many different things. I probably threw in over 100 hours in Oblivion and after your about level 20-30, you can take on about anything. The leveling system and difficulty is very casual for everyone but the side quests are pretty neat.

Stuff I definately recommend in Oblivion are the
Dark Brotherhood

Becoming a vampire then go on the huge quest to cure it (or remain a vampire if you want)

Explore all the side quests in "Anvil" off the coast. Buy a home there. My favorite town in the game and may be yours too if you love the coast. I mean, look at that!! http://images.uesp.net/7/79/OB-Anvil-Dawn.jpg
http://images.uesp.net/0/00/OB-Anvil-maingate.jpg

Once you complete the Dark Brotherhood and get a special horse Shadowmere (spell?) - go and complete the thieves guild and become and ripp off practically all of the Imperial City. Shadowmere can be knocked unconcious (not killed) and basically loaded up with infinite weight of items. Take her to all the "fences" and become filthy rich. Hard to say this is an exploit, but rather just a damn magical horse you get from a very mystical group of people who decide certain people's fates.

When you get real powerful, overthrow a city. Exterminate the entire guard wait for the lame immortal guard captains to cool off. Be sure to knock em out a few times before you leave, don't miss out on that fun. You can't officially take over a city, but you can sure reduce it's security to where you essential run the land now.

Oblivion and Skyrim both take way too much of your time and almost make ya wish you didn't have to sleep as much some nights to play em and have a life as well. I haven't played much of Skyrim because I don't have near enough free time outside of working.
I really dislike zombies and feel like they are overexposed and overrated. SNIP
As a general comment though, I'm tired of the pretentious 'let's explore human drama with the backdrop of robots/zombies/aliens/take your pick but it's really about the human drama' schtick. I want sci fi that is sci fi, fantasy that is fantasy, and horror that is horror. SNIP

But see, if you're tired of zombies, wouldn't zombie stuff without a focus on interpersonal relationships and human drama be even worse? I want a focus on long term story. I want a focus on the people, on the struggle for survival.

Zombies are the backdrop, not the main characters, because in and of themselves they're just a foil for a variant post-apocalyptic scenario with constant danger.

I don't actually think zombies can ever be played out, because of that. They're just monsters. It's like saying orcs can be played out, or wizards, or whatever. There is always more room for any creature, as long as the story is good, or, in the case of gaming, the gaming mechanics are innovative and/or solid.

The Walking Dead is, despite some missteps in the tv series, a triumph. Getting a great number of people to care about human drama in a horror setting is a huge step forward for the horror genre in general. How often do we get horror tv shows? It's so rare, though we were lucky to get TWD and American Horror Story in recent history. Usually, it's just a mini-series every 3 or 4 years or so, or a half-assed attempt at a series that gets cancelled a few episodes from conclusion.

Fallout New Vegas DLCs have had a base price drop (10 bucks to 5). It's no longer a total ripoff to buy them by themselves over just buying another Ultimate Edition like it was in past sales.
If by main storyline you mean the entire game, then yes. There must be a high amount of lead in cyrodil's water supply, because 90% of the characters you interact with and get quests from are complete retards. The writing in Oblivion is truly abysmal, and most of the quests (MQ, guild, or otherwise) make no fucking sense at all. There must be a lot of lead in the shivering isles place too, because all the characters there try so hard to be FUNNY AND WACKY AND HAHA LOLOL that it hurts my brain just thinking about it.

The fact that Oblivion got such praise by 'professional' reviewers is definitive proof that bethesda are some of the best bribers around.
This is why I find Fallout 3 nearly unplayable. I love the Fallout series. Heck, I beat Wasteland multiple times as a kid. But Fallout 3? You get missions like "go intentionally get radiated!", "go intentionally get injured!" served up by annoying NPCs. I knew they were trying for Fallout humor, but it just fell flat every time. Not to mention the engine is buggy as all get out.

Yeah, it's been unavailable since yesterday evening.

Was wondering why I couldn't access the store page - thanks for the info.
Odd, It seems like Steam has removed Battle Vs Chess now from the Steam store completely. I wonder what happened to all the people who ended up buying the game since the game couldn't even start due to launch issues.

Any thoughts on Hack Slash and Loot?
As a big roguelike fan, I advise you to stay away from this game.
I do this in my house too and I use Steam Mover so I don't have to have more than one download of the game around and it is really helpful with organize/maintaining your SSD. I even have .exe link for Steam Mover loaded as a game in Steam for quick access. I highly recommend Steam Mover for backing up your Steam games and maintaining where the games are stored.
Okay, so you're using a SSD in your NAS? Would a "regular" drive be too slow loading over the network?
blablabl zombies, bla bla bla struggle bla bla bla human drama bla bla bla great number of people to care bla bla bla zombies.
I still just want a show to simply be the genre it's presented as, not something wrapped it something else. If I want to watch human drama stuggle oh my god I'm so angsty etc etc stuff (I don't) I will seek it out.

There's a nearly infinite number of cop and hospital and lawyer shows out there with that sort of drama and so few genre shows in comparison to begin with that I really don't need my genre shows watered down with it to appeal to the masses.

If I want to watch zombies (I don't) or general horror or sci fi or fantasy or whatever genre then I want to watch that genre and while of course there is going to be some human interaction I personally don't want that to be such the main push to the point where the robots/zombies/aliens/whatever are such an irrelevant backdrop that they can be interchanged completely with something else with very little difference.

If you or the masses or whoever like that and want to watch it fine, good on you, knock yourselves out.

I just don't care for it. I feel like 'Wait a minute? I signed up for a genre show not genre window dressing for angst and politics and people squabbling over this that and the other all the time'.

As an aside, I really hope there are no more TV show based games coming out because I'm tired of all the TV talk, even though I am hypocritically contributing to it now because I felt compelled to reply to someone trying to prove my opinion wrong.

Ah the internet.

On that note, I'm going the hell outside now. In the real world. :p

What's on sale at Best Buy B&M only that activates on Steam?

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I can't always follow the whole thread. I just noticed that Mafia II is $8.98 on gamersgate or $7.63 if you have the 15% IGN discount. It can be activated on Steam and it looks like the cheapest price on Steam was $7.50, but I don't remember if it was that low during the summer sale.

Here's the page:
On that note, I'm going the hell outside now. In the real world. :p
Noooooo! It's too freaking hot out there!

The issue with Walking Dead TV show is not that it's a human drama, but that it's a bland/bad human drama. Telltale managed to do more in 4 hours in regards to tension, getting me to care about characters, etc than the show has done in nearly 20.
Only ten? You're doing it wrong. I've got hundreds
You have hundreds of games that you bought with the intention of playing each specific one "next?" I too have over a hundred unplayed games in my backlog, but I was singling out the ones worthy of being the next thing I play, not there waiting for a craving for a particular genre.

If you're acquiring hundreds of games thinking you'll get around to each and every one in the next two weeks, I question your sense of reality. (Not that that's a bad thing, mind you. We're all in good company here.)

Edit: You know, when I look at all the console and handheld games I've bought, my number explodes to well beyond ten. I may just have to eat my words...
Sort of along the lines of kerouac kid's question. I've used the keys from a couple of games that I bought physical copies of (Prey & the Half Life 1 collection) and activated them on my steam account. Would I ever be able to use those discs again if I lost my mind and decide to just abandon steam?

If they're useless, I'm wondering if I should just throw the boxes/discs out.
I can't speak to those games specifically, but I assume that the Half Life 1 Collection would be similar to the Half Life Holiday Pack I got years back that comes with an install disc but essentially just directs you in activating it on Steam. The only thing the disc would be good for is performing a local installation, but Steam would still be a requirement.
So since I recommend Drakensang:The Dark Eye to a lot of people here, and having just now "finished" the game. I thought it should be my responsibility to forewarn future players that the final level is the worst final battle I have ever witnessed in my entire life of playing games.
Out of curiosity, have you beaten Sonic Generations?
Any thoughts on Hack Slash and Loot?
It was in an Indie Royale, and although I liked it more than some people, I haven't put much time into it because it's darn hard.

It's a very straight-forward rogue-like. There's a lot to be said for how it distills the essentials of the genre into the essentials, with nothing superfluous. It's aesthetically retro, but also a throwback in how hard it is. It gets frustrating fast.

If you don't like slow pace, retro gaming, or really difficult games, stay away from it.

Even if you do, wait for -75% off on this one.

Thanks for saving me some money on Hack Slash Loot, I was going to get it because I generally enjoy roguelikes.

A week or two ago a listing for Iron Brigade beta showed up in the Steam registry. Just now on twitter the project lead for the game had a conversation with Ryan Davis of Giant Bomb that looks like the game is going to use GFWL. It's not much of a surprise considering it's a Microsoft Studios game. Hopefully they pull a Toy Soldiers down the line if their contract allows it and they can justify the cost.

@taswell (Ryan Davis):
every time I try and play a GFW game, the client crashes trying to recover my profile. it's...pretty cool.

@MrMooEar (Brad Muir of Double Fine):
@taswell noooooooooooooooooo! You're gonna need that. :(

@taswell:
@MrMooEar YEAH, I KNOW. WHY DO YOU THINK I'M TRYING TO PLAY A STOOPID GFW GAME. :(((((((

Thanks for all the info on Hack Slash Loot, looks like I'll pass too. Man, I really need to stop thinking about buying all these games just because their on sale. ;) Backlog way too big already.

Let me clarify - I think I also confused myself on the above post.
I use SteamMover a couple of ways.

I have a NAS\media server that is wired to internet and it has Steam installed. I use it to download the games in order to store the games. I do not play the games from here. Instead, I use SteamMover to move what games I want to play to my laptops secondary hard drive (1TB) that I mention below.

I use my gaming laptop for playing the games. It has a 120GB SSD and a 1TB mechanical hard drive in place of the CD/DVD caddy as my secondary drive. Steam is installed on my SSD and I use SteamMover to symbolic/junction link the individual game folders in my C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common to the D:\Games\Steam on my 1TB hard drive on my laptop. Most of my games are played from the mechanical 1TB hard drive. Some games have extremely long load times so I select those games individually and move the games to the SSD to be run from there. This was really helpful for games like Dirt3, Fallout 3, Crusader Kings II, etc.

SteamMover is a great tool and it is really easy to use/learn. It makes it easy for me to organize the 500+ games I have on Steam and I don't have to keep re-downloading games when I want to play one. I download it once and move the data to the appropriate area.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask me any other questions you might have!

That's a hell of a setup, and pretty clever. I tip my cap to you, sir. I'm trying to modularize my own computer at the moment, leaving only Windows and programs on my SSD, while shuffling off the usual "My" folders to a secondary drive, and pushing all games to a tertiary one. Before, on my lone drive with everything, backing up was a nightmare.
Fallout deals are up.

$10.19 for New Vegas Ultimate
$6.79 for Fallout 3 GOTY

Today's deal is Hack, Slash, Loot at 50% off ($3.49)
Fallout 3 GOTY is usually cheaper at $4.99 during major sales.
Good deal for New Vegas Ultimate tho - that one will take longer to get cheaper. Fantastic game, worth every penny.

GMG Killing Floor for $4.49 after using the voucher code during checkout:
PCGMR-ALLIN-GREEN
http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/us/en/pc/games/shooter/killing-floor/

Lol would get it but my backlog is huge as it is. Not to mention haven't even got 15 hours into Skyrim nor started Saints Row: The Third Complete (which was hilariously $10 for reg or $11ish for complete with all DLC...extremely...EXTREMELY difficult choice between the two.... )

Funny thing is, I use Steam Mover for my Origin titles, too, since Origin now has a directory you can assign where you want it to install games. I just put mirrors of the Origin directory alongside the storage directories I use for Steam and the Steam directories on other drives. So I have a Games directory and inside that, I have a subdirectory for Steam and for Origin.

Then I just jump between my primary Origin Games and my steamapps directory on the C drive on the left side, then jump to the appropriate spot on my D or E or whatever drive I'm going to use (I use my SSD for my games I'm playing a lot, my WD Raptor for games I play occasionally, and my larger, slower 7200rpm drives when I'm storing the game for later).

Steam Mover is great. Only way it could be better is if it showed me how large and how much free space is left on a given drive it's pulled up a directory for. Plus, if it handled multiple directories in a way that didn't involve me pulling them up all the time, that'd be great, too. Still, it's a simple program that does a lot and honestly gives me back control where normally I would have very little(ie., Steam and where it installs games).

Yeah, it took me a while to plan out my system initially. Now it is like a well-oiled machine. I'm not abusing my SSD or my internet connection with this system in place. The setup is extremely nice when re-installing Steam after a OS clean install or moving Steam to a new computer. After you install Steam, use SteamMover to create the links and then install your game. Instead of downloading the game, Steam will do an integrity check of the data you have for the game currently and install only updates that are needed. It happens about as fast as installing a game directly from a DVD. This is by far the best way to backup you Steam library.

For Steam backup: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT USING THE STEAM BUILT IN FEATURE FOR BACKUPS!

I cannot stress this enough. I lost over 200 games due to Steam internal backup feature and had to re-download everyone of them. This part of the Steam client has never worked right and it does not look like an important area to Steam to correct. There are numerous thread in the Steam forums of horror stories when it comes to the backup utility in steam. JUST DON'T DO IT!

Plus, if it handled multiple directories in a way that didn't involve me pulling them up all the time, that'd be great, too. Still, it's a simple program that does a lot and honestly gives me back control where normally I would have very little(ie., Steam and where it installs games).
It also works on Amazon too! ;)

I'm just gonna say this about Fallout: New Vegas - Ultimate Edition...
I got over 113 hours sunk into that game, according to Steam.

I think that gives you an idea of what I think about FO:NV - Ultimate...

I'm definitely picking up Fallout NV,but I"m havng a dilemna on whether or not I should get the ultimate version. The dlc for Fallout 3 was imo forgettable and not that good, is the NV dlc any better?
It was in an Indie Royale, and although I liked it more than some people, I haven't put much time into it because it's darn hard.

It's a very straight-forward rogue-like. There's a lot to be said for how it distills the essentials of the genre into the essentials, with nothing superfluous. It's aesthetically retro, but also a throwback in how hard it is. It gets frustrating fast.

If you don't like slow pace, retro gaming, or really difficult games, stay away from it.

Even if you do, wait for -75% off on this one.
It was planned to be hard, but essentially, it isn't. I consider difficulty level rather as dumb and I'm sure it's caused by the lack of complexity of this game.

You only have to find pattern to finish one quest and then you can play the rest without greater problems, but from beginning you can choose all scenarios, so since you are not choosing Mask of The Boy King, the game looks unbeatable. Additionally I think it's almost impossible to finish any quest with any of default hero classes. The problem is that another classes are unlocked by dying after a multiple of 10 on your deaths counter. So, if you want to start winning, you only have to die 20 times.
Yes, success in this game is based on your deaths counter. Really great idea.
To win at least once, I strongly advice to unlock Amazon class by farming death, because you have got guaranteed holy bow from the beginning of quest and to play only Mask of the Boy King quest with her. Farm on first two levels with your godly holy bow to maximize your HP and ranged attack value. You also need to find bow dealing other damage than holy, because the main boss from this quest is resistant to it. If you are boringly farmed, enough careful and with normal bow in your hands you finally can finish at least one quest. Congratulations!
After you kill the Boy King you will pick up powerful artifact which can be randomly spawned (as other artifacts that you have found before) from start with you on other quest, finally making them passable (and really easy on first levels). So if you are further in game and you want to finish other quests, you also need to be prepared to reroll your hero because you have spawned with other artifact than you wanted.

Old World Blues is one of the best DLC's ever made, if you ask me.

The other DLC's range from good to pretty good, though they're not OWB.
OWB is just something special, for a DLC.

For great DLC's, these are some of them on my list:
KOA: Reckoning - Legend of Dead Kel DLC.
Borderlands: Zombie Island DLC + General Knoxx DLC.
GTA4 - Ballad of Gay Tony DLC.

EDIT:
Also, to actually run Josh E Sawyer's REALLY Hardcore Mod for FO:NV, you need Fallout: New Vegas - Ultimate.
You have to have EVERY piece of DLC - even the two little gun pack/weapon pack DLC's.
Seriously - you should go Ultimate on FO:NV.

Josh's mod for New Vegas is AMAZING. I HIGHLY recommend checking it out http://www.falloutwiki.com/JSawyer#Download . It makes the game much more difficult buy reducing carry amount, reducing the level cap, reworking some talents, and making the water/food/sleep requirements much more strict. Very, very awesome mod.

@Terb73

I still haven't tried regular Hardcore (built into FO:NV), nevermind JE Sawyer's Really Hardcore Mod.
I should, though.

I truly love FO: New Vegas.

Anybody who is thinking of buying FO:NV, go for the Ultimate Edition!

Inputting 2 cents!

1. Everyone should own FO:NV UE for PC.

2. I didnt really feel like using a 3rd party tool to move my steam games from my SSD to a larger drive. I just create symlinks and run most games that way. All the drive I/O intensive games are on my SSD, unless I have taken a break from them. Then i just move them and create symlink (The Witcher, i'm looking at you).

Alright, I'll go for ultimate edition. I don't think I'm hardcore enough to do the Really hardcore mod, but for apparently one of the best dlcs ever, 4 dollars extra isn't that bad.
Wait, you're trying to tell me that you didn't enjoy them looking for a lost girl in the wood for the entire season? What is your problem?!?!
$10 Fallout:NV Ultimate Ed. At GameStop: http://impulsedriven.com/falloutnvue
Makes me wonder if in-store price will be the same. I know literally nothing about Impulse from GameStop, so anyone care to comment on this thought?
Am I the only one who was like "YESSSSS" when Shane was finally killed?
OMG YES!!!!!!!! Especially since he died so much sooner in the comics!
Stardock used to own the Impulse site and client before they sold it to Gamestop. Any of their games will still show up and register there but they are pulling from the Steam version sort of like Desura pulls games you got elsewhere. It isn't that you actually bought it from the store but that you bought a game from the company that (formerly) owned that store.
Oh ya, I remember that! So how do I got about actually getting my game then, since the account page just lists it with no key or link? I ask because I no longer have the install files for it.
As a general comment though, I'm tired of the pretentious 'let's explore human drama with the backdrop of robots/zombies/aliens/take your pick but it's really about the human drama' schtick. I want sci fi that is sci fi, fantasy that is fantasy, and horror that is horror. Save the soap stuff for day time.
"pretentious" is such a great word to describe tv and movies today
Am I the only one who just keeps all their software on a NAS so it's always available? That's all in once place, accessible now to anyone you want on your network (no re-downloads and works during internet outages). I suppose if you have to go somewhere you can re-download on the road which is nice if you travel a lot...
Yeah, that's it! I do the same thing in our house. Everything everyone d/ls goes on the NAS in the appropriate folder Music, Video, Games, Apps, etc.

I have an awesome metal briefcase with about 14 TB of exHDDs I use for all my storage!
Do you then designate the NAS as your Steam install folder?
You know, years ago I would think this was trolling; but with how fast gigabit is, it's actually totally do-able.
I still prefer doing it manually or using explorer extensions. But conceptually, Hard Links/Junctions are the best thing ever for maintaining a good HDD.
How often do we get horror tv shows? It's so rare, though we were lucky to get TWD and American Horror Story in recent history.
Actually there are quite a few that come to mind, but I'm really glad you mention American Horror Story. When I first watched that, for the first 2-3 episodes I felt it was literally one of the worst shows ever played out and viewed it as the worse horseshit available. My g/f who is all about liking bad things kept on it, so I did too. Turned out to be one of my favorite TV shows in recent years!! Simply amazing and I can't wait to see what the next one will be about.
Usually, it's just a mini-series every 3 or 4 years or so, or a half-assed attempt at a series that gets cancelled a few episodes from conclusion.
all this makes me think of is...THE BLACK DONNELLYS!!!!!!!! DAMN YOU FOR BRINGING UP SUCH SADDENING MEMORIES!!!
Okay, so you're using a SSD in your NAS? Would a "regular" drive be too slow loading over the network?
Oh my god, an SSD on a NAS...gross. No, I think he was saying on his pc. All you need to have a good NAS setup is gigabit support on your network.
As an aside, I really hope there are no more TV show based games coming out because I'm tired of all the TV talk, even though I am hypocritically contributing to it now because I felt compelled to reply to someone trying to prove my opinion wrong.
Hey now, Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d you steal our garbage?! comes out soon and that game is gonna be golden for discussion!

I wish less people would use steam mover and just get Link Shell Extension if they want ease and simplicity. With Link Shell Extension, everything is drop and drop as if you are making shortcuts and it adds overlay icons to show all the different forms of linking.
Interesting, I've never had a problem with it, then again I've never restored a backup from one. I've always made them and then just create ISOs of the backed up files to store and use a virtual drive if I ever need to restore. I only started doing this because of how pissed I was that some HL2 content wasn't present on disc. Guess I'll avoid making them for every game like I've been doing each time I uninstall/complete one (which is almost never )

This is exactly what I've said and have been saying. People need to stop using stuff like steam mover and do the links themselves.
Any thoughts on Hack Slash and Loot?
Not worth it, and I love rogue-likes.

It's incredibly frustrating because it's far too reliant on luck and specific builds. There are only a couple ways to regain health:
1) find potions that give you a handful of hp back. There are not enough of these to maintain solid health.
2) find something with regen. best case!
3) find a weapon with one of 2 special conditions (divine or necro, if i remember correctly) that give health on kills.

Add on to that that a divine weapon has a high chance of upgrading your character (hit percentage, etc) on kills, and it means if you don't find one early, you're hurting. I've only found one once.

Getting one of those things is pure luck. Early melee characters are pointless because you simply take too much damage.

I had a bow character doing fairly well -- found a ring of regen (my first and only!), and had very very good armor... and then ran into a mage that cast a fireball at me. the fireball destroyed my ring, my armor, and my shield. Without armor or regen, i ate it soon afterwards.

The game had potential, but balance is ridiculously broken. Supposedly you eventually unlock new classes that have a better chance, and you can unlock artifacts (you get to pick one unlocked artifact per game). I unlocked a nice sword, which doesn't help much.

Play crawl or nethack instead. Or Dredmore, if you want a more modern, simplified take. Heck, Cardinal Quest is better.

I want to love it, but HackSlashLoot just isn't there yet. I understand what he was going for -- what with artifacts, and needing to build up to be able to survive harder dungeons, and I applaud that in concept, but in execution it fails because of luck based survival.
Okay, so you're using a SSD in your NAS? Would a "regular" drive be too slow loading over the network?
I have very few Steam games so no thoughts to really move my Steam folder there. I mostly commented about the NAS since it's something which can help you avoid downloading your games over again all the time and someone mentioned Steam mover which could help with that as well.

I'm not sure if it would work to just use a network share on a NAS as a file folder, but the network tends to be a bottleneck in most cases so I'd probably not recommend that. You could put saves there though I guess.

I just use large 1 TB drives mirrored in my NAS and not SSDs.

That said, the benefits of a NAS is just easier to manage all your data in one spot. Mine can do DNLP or whatever it's called and with smart phones, wireless speakers, etc...you can now stream music from the NAS that you and your family members share all over the house...wirelessly.

It's also so cool that I could be on the sh*t can playing on my smart phone and want a file, I just network over to the NAS with ES Explorer and boom, I grab any file or doc I need from manuals, music, work, etc...I was doing this grabbing all my old Dosbox games.

We also use it to share work files and I try to put all the install files there so if I need to rebuild my machine (very rarely now), EVERYTHING is there already.

Not to mention if you need to do backups, you backup "1" device and not your laptop, your wife's, your kids, etc...

Great for households.
Fallout 3 GOTY is usually cheaper at $4.99 during major sales.
Fallout 3 GOTY hit that price for the first time during the summer sale. It may be a while until it goes that low again. (Fallout 3 Vanilla does hit that price semi often.)

oh, i should probably add about hack/slash/loot... a far superior game, in my opinion, that successfully accomplishes short mission based dungeon crawling, with randomized maps, distinctly different dungeons, and distinctly different classes is Desktop Dungeons.

Desktop Dungeons is absolutely amazing, and each class requires distinctly different gameplay, etc. Highly recommended. The first version is free, but they've spent a ton of time making an extremely polished pay version (pre-ordering buys you into the closed beta).

Probably my favorite new entry into the rogue-like genre in years.

all this talk about folders and directories reminded me of how much i hate that theres no standard folder to contain game saves. I hate that every game decides to put its stupid saves in a different directory. my documents folder is filled with publisher/developer name folders. sometimes the saves are stored in the system32 folder. sometimes theyre in the actual game folder. I wouldnt mind if all games had cloud save support, but they dont. I dont see why its so hard for devs to just acknowledge a single folder as the place to store all saves. My Documents/My Games/"enter publisher name here"
Who is Josh Sawyer and why should I care about his mod? It doesn't seem to offer anything that compelling
He was the project director of Fallout New Vegas. It is basically an unofficial final balance patch from one of the main devs of the project.

I have played through F:NV 6 times beginning to end . My 6th time was using the mod and was the most enjoyable.
- Less level ups, makes your skill point/trait choices more important
-less carry space makes you limit the guns/equipment you can carry
-Faster draining h2o/food/sleep levels make it more important to ensure you have food/water on hand. Survival because a more important part of the game. Random beds, lakes, and food become much more exciting to find as you are wandering the wasteland!
