CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

So what was the final word on being able to activate the Darksiders given away by Gamestop on Steam. There are tons on SteamGifts, but can they actually be activated on Steam?
Does anyone know if Mass Effect 2 from Gamersgate can be activated on Steam?
If it's an EA game, it can't be activated on Steam, only Origin.

Hey buddy, i got one from someone who got a gamestop code and then it gave him a steam key, mine is working fine and dandy!

The Last Remnant $3.75
Thanks for posting this, man! I've been waiting for a truly good deal on Last Remnant, and this is a good opportunity to pick the game up.

By the way, CAG's, is Last Remnant at least worth $3.75? (The male protagonist has Vash the Stampede's voice; How could one go wrong?)

I have SR:TT installed, but I don't think I'll get to it for a bit yet. The purchase felt validated a few days after the sale ended when my wife started showing me pics one of her WoWarcraft friends sent having recreated his character in SR and she confessed a sudden interest in the game. :)
See, now you've piqued my curiosity.
Hooray! Someone else on The Internet knows how to properly spell that phrase! I think this brings the total to four. It's amazing how many people write "peaked" or worse, "peeked" instead. The former at least makes some contextual sense.
Same here although I never got it to restart once it'd freeze. Video locks up, music and stuff keeps going. Sometimes when I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, it already has the "Not Responding" box waiting for me.

It's not CPU or GPU temps; I asked about this same thing earlier in the thread and was recommended to check but they're both well below critical levels. So far I've just been kind of putting up with it and trying to save frequently.

I had a pretty standard tough lookin' dude; bulky but not "muscles!" tough, shaved head, usual movie crime boss stuff. But then I wanted to use some of the ladies clothes and while a lady can wear a suit, I didn't want to see my guy wearing high heels and a skirt. So he got ret-conned into a Hispanic female. At least I assume that non-Russian, non-neutral accent is supposed to be Hispanic.

On the plus side, it got me an achievement for playing 2+ hours as both genders.
Exact same issues, and ya the advice for fixing it seems to be all over. Though some seem to suggest that DirectX 10/11 mode may have some kind of bug that is causing these hangups. It's not really bad I guess just annoying when you have to replay a level again.

I totally forgot you could switch genders in the game. :D
Haven't played SR2 yet, though I bought it during the summer sale.
9 hours in and you're already at 52%? Are you doing any of the side stuff or just blowing through the storyline? I only ask because I played that game for something like 54 hours (I think).
Just going through the story missions, then i'll sweep up the side activities later on, Not sure how far I am but just got done with the Cyber-Space area. So figure I am almost done with at least the main story lines, but I can see how you could spend a long time just playing around in the world too.

Think I may be rushing a bit due to my backlog, curse you backlog :bomb:
It is, but reading this thread I've seen plenty of problems with it just for getting the key.

Does this include the gamestop preorder bonus, the explosive mission pack?
The problems lately were related to a giveaway (Darksiders) not registering properly on Gamestop's site even before you could get to the client. Also, they have since fixed it and I was able to the key, gave it away and verified through the person I gave it to that it did indeed activate properly on Steam.
So what was the final word on being able to activate the Darksiders given away by Gamestop on Steam. There are tons on SteamGifts, but can they actually be activated on Steam?
See above. :) gtbrigs told me the key I grabbed via the Gamestop client and sent to him activated just fine.

*Edit: BigSexyDH (why do I feel dirty saying that ) and jimbodan beat me to it.
See, now you've piqued my curiosity. Were you responsible for the papaya-ripening big booty mods? C'mon man, don't lie. ;) I will say I love the mod scene for Bethesda games. My modded Skyrim looks amazing, and runs pretty well, all things considered. I'm tempted to start sending high-res screenshots of my game to my console peasant friend, since he's thinking about joining the glorious heights of PC gaming. Like me when I first joined, he's not sure he'd see enough benefits of a PC version over his usual platform of choice the 360, but I'm slowly persuading him. Telling him the Steam deals I've gotten made him perk up.
Haha no bootylicious mods from me. Mostly I worked on face mods on Morrowind. I did a couple of really minor mods for Oblivion but if I recall correctly I don't think I ever circulated those into wide release.

Anyway, yes do convert people. And don't forget the ENB series too on top of the hi-res textures.

can a simple console peasant really ever join the master race? sure, they may buy a pc, install steam, build a library... but will they ever know the joys of editing .ini's to force widescreen on a classic, or that first boot after dropping in a new stick of RAM or video card? do they suffer the same moment of abject terror when a game suddenly locks up momentarily, only to give way to the BSOD? will they experience that glorious, and perhaps a little shameful, pang of nostalgia that we all feel when someone says "it is a good day to die", or "iddqd"? no my friend, a PC gamer is born, not made in an electronics store.

too far?

I was engaged in a firefight outside my penthouse when I ran inside to cool the heat. You know how when you go back outside, there's usually a few enemies milling around, collecting their things and getting ready to head back home? Well, when I went out by my pool, there was a police helicopter set down next to the pool with a couple cops standing around it. I popped off the cops and was all excited about my new stolen copter.

I'm sure you can guess where this is going. I flew up in it and on my way down to "garage" it on the helipad, the game froze. I'm sure I'll get plenty of other copters later on (I have a few now already at only 20% completed) but man that ticked me off because I knew it was a goofy rare quirk that made it happen.

As far as gameplay, at least it's original. I didn't get too far, so I never got a full grasp of the combat system.

But the game is optimized very poorly. Make sure you have a beast of a machine.

just started playing the last remnant last night

it isn't that bad, its your typical jrpg (which isn't that bad of a thing considering that genre is a little lacking on the pc)

its not really optimized for the pc, you can tell from the menus (they are meant for consoles) so i would suggest using a controller

I would recommend it if you have an itch for jrpg's, it isn't horrible by any means but its not great either

Should I get Fallout NV UE? I only have the base game with only 15 hours in it for the xbox, haven't played it since launch. I got about 5 minutes to decide.
Edit: I decided to get it in the final seconds

75% off Quake 4 / DOOM 3 today
DOOM3 Pack and DOOM Complete Packs are 75% off as well

Daily Deal:
Toki Tori 75% off $4.99 $1.24

It's pretty easy to recommend Toki Tori at that price. It's a highly polished puzzler and well worth it.

If anyone wants to play a game for 15 minutes, get confused by bad level design, and then wonder why they ever liked it in the first place I can recommend Heretic for $1.24.

edit: Oh, and if you want to see all of today's 75% off without trying to pick them out of the rest of the 25% off stuff go here and ignore Rage.
I find Legend of Fae's match system extremely annoying- I want to move the blocks vertical!
Agreed. It was fine at first, but then they started adding extra mechanics that had me clicking all over the place while all in real time. The game would be infinitely better if you could swap any adjacent blocks.

That's why I'm passing on all the old Doom, Quake, & HeXen games. After picking up Wolfenstein 3D I discovered the nostalgia just wasn't strong enough to get me to enjoy games like these today.

And they make me motion-sick.

Woo! Commander Keen! Can't wait to play those games (in like, 15 years when I remember that they're in my backlog!)

I remember playing them as a wee boy. Have no clue which one, or how far I got, but I remember them being fun and charming, if not more than a bit difficult at times. Is it just me, or do they not make them like they used to anymore?

Damn, that's more than a bit tempting. I still have a copy of the Doom II Totally Unauthorized Guide sitting on my bookshelf with the rest of my strategy guides.

Still, not sure I'd actually play them again - I played through Doom 3 on the 360 (or was it the original XBox?) It was alright, but nothing worth doing again. And I'm not sure I'm up for the original two games at this point in time - as someone mentioned above, they do tend to induce motion sickness these days.

Interested in DOOM 3?

Keep in mind that the BFG Edition is coming out October 16. It features an "HD revamp" and The Lost Mission and comes with DOOM and DOOM 2.

Who knows if an upgrade path will be available or if you'll be forced to re-buy?

How is return to castle wolfenstien? Was thinking about the Doom pack but with the new edition coming out.
How is return to castle wolfenstien? Was thinking about the Doom pack but with the new edition coming out.
Unlike its sequel, Wolfenstein, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is excellent

ive looked around but it seems like you will have to re-buy doom 3 to get the bfg edition

which to a point makes it pointless to buy it now (unless you really want it)

i would love to get it, but it seems to be better to just wait until the bfg edition comes out
as someone mentioned above, they do tend to induce motion sickness these days.
A lot of people found that games that did not cause motion sickness on CRT monitors started to nauseate when played on LCDs. Anyone who experiences this may be out of luck unless they have some antiquated hardware sitting around.

The new Wolfenstein was pretty damn good

Contemplating the Hexen pack.

It was the first game my brother and I got for our PSX, and we had no memory card to save games to. Not sure if we ever beat it once we finally got a memory card... damn thing took all 15 blocks of memory for one save.

What's the Hexen + Heretic games like? Look like a supernatural Doom? Looks fun. For $2.49 I'll probably bite.

As I said last page, differences in modern monitors may be to blame for people who didn't experience motion sickness back in the day but do now.
What's the Hexen + Heretic games like? Look like a supernatural Doom? Looks fun. For $2.49 I'll probably bite.
Sort of. From what I remember, it wasn't really level based, but different areas that you traversed back and forth whilst finding keys to progress farther. Guess that's like a really big level of Doom? Also remember getting stuck and not remember where to go often, but maybe that was because I was a child.

It was class based game. There was a long distance mage and melee range fighter, and I forget what the third class was.

Couldn't really tell you about Heretic or Hexen II though.
What's the Hexen + Heretic games like? Look like a supernatural Doom? Looks fun. For $2.49 I'll probably bite.
From what I remember playing Hexen all of those years ago, that pretty much describes it...
The new Wolfenstein was pretty damn good
Yeah, it isn't a horrible game. It's an above average shooter, I'd say. It just isn't as good (I called it excellent) as RTCW.
Unlike its sequel, Wolfenstein, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is excellent
Kay I'll pick it up then. I recall Return to Castle Wolfenstien being a beloved game. Plus there is a unoffical patch that adds widescreen and other improvements according to the fourms so :applause:
Agreed. It was fine at first, but then they started adding extra mechanics that had me clicking all over the place while all in real time. The game would be infinitely better if you could swap any adjacent blocks.
For being a cute little game it's pretty difficult. The sad thing is is that I'm playing on easy mode. I use the pause button a lot. Doing that helps slow everything down. I went in expecting a relaxing fun little match game with a cute story, not the case. I was raging last night playing Legend of Fae.

Sidenote: The worst is when the screen pulls me up to the action screen to inform me it's raining then I have to click the match screen again. Don't waste my time to tell me it's raining- I have eyes!
Yeah, it isn't a horrible game. It's an above average shooter, I'd say. It just isn't as good (I called it excellent) as RTCW.
I thought the new Wolfenstein was alright, not above average and not terrible, but an ok game.

Hexen was the second pc game I ever played on our home computer as a child of eleven or twelve. I played it a bunch and really liked it at the time. It is like Doom except you can pick from three classes and there is a hub with some smaller maps connected to it that you have to travel between to complete the level. It was easy for me to get lost back when I played it but then I just enabled cheats and screwed around. If you really want to play an old school game I would recommend it but both the gameplay and graphics are very dated at this point.

To be more specific. hal's Wolfenstein review:

At $1.24, I'm wondering if I should grab the Commander Keen pack. I recall having one of the shareware episodes back in the day, but, sadly, I don't remember much else.

A penny saved is a penny ready for a different game deal. Is Commander Keen worth 124 pennies?

EDIT:
Oh lordie... I'm so tempted by this since I kind of want to try this game... I do have a bad backlog, but that's not a terrible price. What do?
Dude, I'm totally having the same problem. Many people simply didn't enjoy the game, while others support it heavily; Feedback is very mixed. Plus, I really do like the idea of having a meaty JRPG on my PC.

If nothing else, I'm just glad I have 11 hours to decide.

Heretic is ok. IIRC, it had multi-floors, which Doom didn't have. I remember liking the crossbow.

Hexen was fun in co-op, but the deathmatch was pretty crappy.
