CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Previously there was talk about steam mover and not to use the built in steam backup feature. I'd like to back up my games but not link them (so steam mover doesn't sound like it would work for my purpose). Is there something that beats just manually doing it?

Ugh. I want Dawnguard but I just picked up the Old Republic CE and am contemplating Guild Wars 2.... stupid money. I just have a hunch it will stay a solid $20 for a decent amount of time.

Oh well. Hopefully it drops drastically by the Winter Sale!

Same. I was all set to get Dawnguard for $15 and then I saw TOR CE for $30 at K-mart so I will probably wait on Dawnguard for now since I already spent a $30 I didn't expect but...
Hmmmm, Worms Reloaded GOTY is 75% off at GMG... and if the code stacks... hmmmm
Yes it does and it brings the GOTY version with all the DLC down to $4.68 Decisions decisions.

*Edit: Alright, I twisted my arm. Bought. :p

Looks like the indie gala store is finally up. 1000 points = $1. Finally have a use for my 12500 points! Oh wait! After reading the FAQ, apparently you can only use a certain amounts of points per item. Only enough for like a 20% discount.

Here's a gem!
The Ironclads Collection
Regular price: $39.95
GalaPrice only: $31.96
I have 21500 galapoints, and they're all worth 1/10th of a cent towards getting a shitty game for a higher price than it was during the Steam sale. There is no measure to the level of sadness this brings to the world. I was foolishly optimistic towards getting something good from Gala.

The site is still in beta, so maybe they will change this if we use the contact form to express our disgust?

I feel you. But I also spent my GW2 money during the summer sale. ):
I really wanted to try that game too. Oh well, either I wouldn't like it, then get butthurt that I paid so much or I would have loved it and spent too much time on it.

Actually, I noticed those too. I'm not sure if those codes are reusable or not. For my sake I hope not, but I did use the PC Gamer one because I figured that would expire first so there's still the Order not received one. :p

You know, I watched some gameplay vids and convinced myself the Worms series really is not for me. As crazy and fun as people say they are, just don't know if I like turn based worm killing. Maybe if it were cats...

I will have to check those out. Maybe it will even make me get off my ass and play it. *note to self: Anchor the damned ships!*

Well I am one of that near extinct species of gamers that likes turn based.

Worm killing on the other hand, I don't know about. I mean, maybe it starts with worms then works its way up to cats and then the next thing, people. Oh wait, killing people is pretty much every game. Hmm.

lol... I do partake in plenty of people killing. I will keep the Worms game option open. I do love board games which are turn based, so I don't know why I have that mental block where turn based video games are a turn off.

Worms Crazy Golf just looks like a typical golf game, so I'm passing on that. Ultimate Mayhem looks like a 3D version of Reloaded, but people seem to like the Reloaded series much more so if I get anything it might just be reloaded. The rapping worms do get annoying (at least that's all I heard in the gameply vid, maybe it is optional?)

And yes, anchor the ships. You tend to forget in the excitement of preventing polluters from dumping toxic waste. In my next mission I am to intercept a shipment of illegal wood.

The Worms crazy golf somehow reminds me of Angry Birds, which oddly enough just makes me want to buy it more.

And rapping worms? Oh lord, what am I getting myself into. Then again who am I kidding I'll never play this game outside the meta-game Steam, gotta' catch 'em all!

That is just so much excitement I am not sure if I will be able to handle it.

I have an odd question. I was just looking at my steam profile an noticed I didn't have a lot of steam achievements for SR3 (13/83) - things I actually did get (skimming the list I should be somewhere over 65/83). I remember getting the achievements in game, but they aren't on my profile.
Now it's not a big deal or anything, but since I am only really getting back into PC gaming recently, I have to ask, is steam achievements not registering a normal occurrence?

You know, Angry Birds was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the Worms Crazy Golf screenshots, but the gameplay vid put that notion to rest. You can hit sheep and other worms and make then explode, but those are sub-objectives. The main one is to get par or less on each particular hole.

And yes, rapping worms with gems like "Take your order like a waiter, I'll bring your food later"

In Extremes you unlock bonus videos after each mission explaining the "real life" story behind the mission. They are actually interesting.

I think the only game I ever had not register an achievement was Nation Red. But something weird happened there. Not sure if I forgot to save or what, but it also failed to register me silver starring all the stages. Other than that I've never had an issue with the achievements. People have been reporting a lot of bugs with SRtT though.

Are you using any of the in game cheats for SR3? Those disable achievements.

Daily Deal

Fallout Collection $6.79 66% off includes below
Fallout $3.39 66% off
Fallout 2 $3.39 66% off
Fallout Tactics $3.39 66% off

Is this a good price for the Fallout collection? What do you guys think?

I have to admit, the dailies, for the most part, have at least been intriguing since the Steam sale.

I would pay $6.79 just for Fallout Tactics.
First game I played in the Fallout series and still one of my top 5 games of all time.

Oh well. I guess I will keep an eye out for other games then. I like using achievements (on Xbox) to give myself goals to go back and get more gameplay out of a game after I've beaten it, but I have a big enough backlog that I don't really need to be doing that.
Are you using any of the in game cheats for SR3? Those disable achievements.
Not a one. Weird. I was actually getting the progress bars and messages in game, they're just not on my profile.

I also notice I have the achievement for mission 30 (Ho Boat) but am missing things there is no way to miss (complete act 1, other storyline achievements) so it's not just from memory on my part.

Oh! I just realized that I used a mod to disable the bloodsuck animation from the vampire addon.. but that was halfway through the game. Could that have affected it? Even if it did I can't imagine it would retroactively remove achievements - would it?

I was thinking they should have been 75% off at some point but Steamprices.com seems to be indicating this is the lowest it has been and even then it was on this price one other time on March 25th. Apparently even during the big sales it hasn't been this cheap.

Of course this is only going back to 2010 so I don't know about prior to that or when these games were even added to Steam though the forums for the entire Fallout Series don't seem to go back further than 2010.

I bought the Fallout collection from GOG back in April and still haven't played them yet. I would have rather had them on Steam. For some reason Fallout was free and the other two were 50% off so $3 each.

Same. I'd rather have them on Steam than GOG so I am going to double dip. :p

*Edit: Bought and (remote) installing now. I'm kind of surprised Fallout Tactics is 1.8 GB.

A second monitor with a full screen browser auto refreshing every two minutes. It was a completely worthwhile investment.

I have four 23" monitors at work and I have to say that it is the most awesome setup. Of course I don't keep a full screen browser with CAG open on the far left monitor and I never read threads and post responses while at work but I'm sure it would be great if I did. ;)

I don't really do that, but now that I've said it and since I have a second display here I'm starting to consider it. :)

I've seen the "boxed" Fallout collection at Target for 9.99 before. Already have all 3 games and also enjoyed Fallout Tactics a lot more than the reviews state. Are there any custom scenarios one can play on Tactics?
How do you people keep up with this thread? lol
Thinking about it, I suppose that, even if one didn't properly read each post, there are some cheats one could exploit:

- When the Daily Deal crosses over, discussion will turn to it.
- When a bundle or miscellaneous offer provides Steam codes becomes available, discussion will shift over to it.

Those are just a few that come to mind, but it's no way to keep up with the entire conversation. There are larger points that are discussed continuously, such as indie bundles, Steamgifts goings-on, and Coconut Queen, but that's for the real Steam Thread Enthusiast.
Once you go for dual (or 2+) monitors, you can't go back!
Eh, I ran with two 24" monitors for the better part of a year before I sold them off and went back to a single 27". It wasn't the "all that" that I was expecting -- at least with gaming. Still had to alt-tab out to do everything, so.."lol". I guess if you used the PC primarily for other stuff, it would be neat; I'd love an extra one at work.

Agreed on that. When I do work (coding and what not) a second monitor is just phenomenal to have. But when it came to gaming I didn't really like two monitors which is why I currently use one and when I work I enable the second one.

Now I could definitely understand multiple monitors for gaming if you were to use Eyefinity a lot.

I think I paid $12 years ago for a physical copy of the Fallout Collection. Might consider double-dipping to have it on Steam...
This weekend I got no steam gaming in, but I did discover Final Fantasy I for ios, and I've already racked up almost ten hours, mostly while sitting around waiting to go up at mics. I'm kinda surprised at how much I'm liking it, and how much further I've gotten than I ever did on the NES.
Every remake of the earliest games has increased the speed of leveling. Final Fantasy I on NES in particular was balanced around the need for the player to explore to figure out what to do and where to go next, so you'd level passively just wandering. Playing with a strategy guide or walkthrough, one gets to the point where you just have to stop and level for a bit before progressing (Hall of Giants, Warmech's Bridge) because you know where all of the objectives are. Later games in the series were better about giving straightforward paths with smaller increments int he monster difficulty.

So apparently Battle Vs Chess is working now for the people who bought it. They are getting working keys now, though the game defaults to German and if you want to change it to English you have to navigate through the menus in German to do it. :p

It's still not up in the store, but someone who apparently seems to work for the publisher and/or the Developer posted this in the Steam forums:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=32130819&postcount=174
Hi, At the moment we removed BvC for a few days to have it re-released again with the MAC version.

If you've got any questions, feel free to pm me
And it's just completely coincidental that it got taken down when everyone was having problems with their keys not working and raised a fuss to Steam. Right.

In related news, GetGamesGo has the same game listed on their site coming soon as "Check vs Mate" so perhaps Interplay, the holders of the trademark to "Battle Chess" forced their hand.

Yeah, my gaming PC is also my everyday 'workhorse' PC so my second monitor really comes in handy for when I'm not gaming. Otherwise, I might be feeling the same way.

Was out of town all weekend so did not get much gaming in, aside from a couple of games on my TouchPad (More specifically, EDGE & Osmos, which I also have on steam. I have to say, I prefer playing them on the tablet). It's good to be back!

I blame games not using Borderless Full Screen Mode. It disturbs me to no end when I'm playing a game and I accidentally click "outside" of the full screen game window only to have the game minimize/crash because they couldn't establish borders or when you have shit pop up on the other monitor but can't reply without minimizing. Drives me nuts that programmers aren't held to higher best practice standards.

:beer:500 Pages! And this thread was just started in the middle of the summer sale.

So how many pages normally until a thread really starts wigging out?

I know Dead Island has probably been bought for most of us, but anyone who waited for the GOTY edition with all DLC, this deal is one to check the piggy bank for. EDIT: Also, did they remove the 4-pack option for Dead Island altogether? >.<

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/15190/

It says on the page that since I purchased Dead Island already, I get 50% off the GOTY's base price of $19.99, so the sale price is $9.99 for any copy previous DI owners buy. The GOTY package includes
 • Dead Island
 • Bloodbath Arena DLC
 • Ryder White DLC
 • Blueprint "The Ripper" Weapon
 • Get ready for your return to Dead Island, a paradise to die for!
Is this the best price Dead Island has had digitally? I don't remember seeing a better price anywhere else, so if this is the case I wouldn't mind buying/trading copies for other CAGs who want in.

Link to my Steam group buy and trading thread post for more info about payment/trades/etc., but you can always PM me if you are interested.
