CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Me too. I played Flatout though, but never got to UC. Darn backlog.
Valve will be launching non-gaming stuff from "creativity to productivity" software next month on Steam to go along with its vast catalog of productivity-killing software. It will allow steamworks and cloud storage integration. Interesting.
Does this mean we have to discuss the productive sales in this thread? It is the "Steam Deals" thread. But I don't wanna discuss productivity software deals.:nottalking:

When I read that Mark Richardson of Valve says in a press release:
"The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games"
I turned to my wife and said "No I'm not!"
GFWL was confirmed a few days ago. Unlike their other games, it's published by Microsoft Studios.
Dang, that's too bad. Though hopefully it is not too much of a hassle. I went ahead and changed my GFWL password the other day when the after the password problem was talked about it here. I knew if I didn't do it then I'd run into the same problem and not know what the hell was going on. If I remember correctly you can't have numbers in it or GFWL will not recognize it. Seems absurd that they would accept a password that is not applicable.

Steam achievements for productivity software in the vein of Level Up Photoshop would be a nice touch of gamificiation implementation.

Valve should show people how it's done and throw a set of Steam achievements into the Source Filmmaker to help people get over the hump of actually creating videos rather than just looking at the interface, poking around and uninstalling.
Based on the Giant Bomb tweets about profile eating GFWL is in effect.
One would think Microsoft would've made sure they fixed that PROBLEM by now...
[shakes my head]

Are there any Steam Achievements in Source Filmmaker for looking at the interface, poking around, and uninstalling? ;)

Hmm, I would be curious to know if the multiplayer for the console versions (assuming it has it) works with multiplayer for people who have the PC version

Well there are sort of exceptions like running Xenoblade on Dolphin (and yes I bought the game even though I don't have a Wii) but I guess for those who have consoles there's some games that either don't get ported or the ports are crappy or have bad DRM or whatever.

Usually console stuff is more expensive. I see their sales and laugh at how much they are paying for stuff but on the other hand they can sell back and flip and what not too. In this case though the console version is just as cheap plus no crappy DRM so sounds like a decent deal to me.
Steam has spoiled the lot of you. Funny how $15-$40 can seem cheap to console owners, but the prices are almost blasphemous to PC players.
Personally, I try not to go above $30 for console games. Though I have to say are some pretty good sales in awhile.
I just have to say, while I do enjoy all the game related discussions in these threads, when you guys go off of tech rants it makes my head want to asplode......
Ditto. Also, I feel so young here sometimes, especially with the "Back in my day we had to program our own games talk" they had last weekend.

Also, Indeed, Unmechanical looks...ironically very mechanical *dodges tomatoes* :booty:

Bad Rat's is up to 9.0 on metacritic now :bouncy:

So I've been researching the difference between FlatOut 2 and UC and I found this:
- From 8 opponents to 12 opponents on screen (3 new opponent personalities).
- 2 new derby cars. Both are unique. The Bonecracker is a heavy banger that also has great acceleration. The Grinder is the speed demon of all trash cars, and it shows Southern pride.
- Challenging challenge (carnage) mode, even with a joystick.
- More objects on-screen.
- Water and pyro effects are juicy.
- Overall, everything is a little juicier.
- Physics slightly updated. Seriously, it takes FAR more skill to drive recklessly in FO than Burnout any day of the week. The brake actually has a use, and cars bottom out and loose control from jumps.
So all in all it sounds like the additional content is pretty small, and the graphics are reasonably better. I saw some people who didn't even notice the graphical improvements until they were pointed out to them though, so that may or may not be a buying point for some people.

Another big thing is that since UC uses GFWL, it supports a 360 controller perfectly. FlatOut 2 takes a little more effort to get it set up, and some people think it's a little wonky.

I decided to bite on FlatOut 2 though for two main reasons.

1. It's WAY cheaper. I really didn't feel like paying double the price for such minor enhancements.
2. The modding community for FlatOut 2 is strong, while it's very shallow for UC. If you're going to want custom content, don't buy UC.

Just thought I'd share what I dug up here in case anyone else was debating the purchase. :)

Can't type long but think about Steam Workshop for photoshop, illustrator, etc. I have not needed to use steam support, but there may be huge upsides to steam software, ie community add-ons, skins, fixes. Doing this will have huge incentives for the creator because they could make thousands of dollars. The basic programs are free and all the "hats" make the money, for everybody. Just speculating, but it could be a game changer that many people will love Valve for.
Dang, that's too bad. Though hopefully it is not too much of a hassle. Actually it will probably be even worse since I don't think they have an actual drop down for this DLC as it's not sold on Steam thus everyone will give it away as the base game and confuse the hell out of everyone. Drama ensues.
Thanks for giving me the idea! ;)
Oh, that's our sunghost! (plays taped laughter)

While we're on the subject of SteamGifts, I noticed a significant uptick in the giveaways I win. With ARMA 2: Combined Ops that I just won, I am averaging a win every 129 entries. It's worth noting that over the past 1 1/2 months I've been able to enter higher level contributor giveaways, and I'm attributing the ability to enter these lower total entrant giveaways to the better odds. i've won a giveaway everyday for the past 3 days, and average a win every week since I've had an account.

You guys should consider looking up the dailies or any specials on SteamGifts and entering before purchasing yourself. most of the time the giveaways end before the sale price does, But if you want the more recent/expensive stuff, then your going to have to raise your contributor level. I mention this because I have seen people say how it's not worth it, and they can look at my stats to see if they still feel this way, but keep in mind that even though my contrib level is soon to be $2,000, I've only spent $170 plus the Half-Life Retail disc key that I started with (out of my own personal collection) due to getting things on sale, haggling with fellow CAG's and gifts for being a middleman in high value deals, helpping people out, etc.

The total retail cost of everything I've won is $188. Yes, I realize that buying that stuff myself on sale would have resulted in spending much less, however that's not the point. I have been introduced to games that I wouldn't have spent money on even if the were on sale, and from the people I've met that lead to a fuller and richer experience when it comes to gaming.

I started with next to nothing and a new PC rig that I built myself, and 4 months later, mostly thanks to my first Steam Summer Sale, I have been exposed to a great many games I would have never given a second look to, and can now hopefully give a newbie pc gamer the same boost in their library I've been given. i would have never bought ARMA 2 for a free mod (DayZ), but now I can see what all the fuss is about. So there you have it, look at my stats and judge for yourself whether it's worth it, but if your simply trying to see if you come out ahead, your kinda missing the point.

Thanks to all the CAG's I've met and befriended, the BGCQ for all the awesomeness they bring, and to CheapyD and the guys and girls who work hard to keep this site not only running, but at the top of the food chain when it comes to finding deals, and the community to go with it.
While we're on the subject of SteamGifts...
Thanks for that explanation; I couldn't really make sense of all the fuss over steamgifts before (blindly assuming fans to be raffle-addicts or something).

One of the things I love with the summer/winter sale is titles I haven't noticed being discussed. This summer, I was following the threads here, at slickdeals, hardforum, and anandtech.

Just as a heads up the next Indie Royale bundle has been displaying '1 week' since last week (I think) so it might pop up sometime tomorrow/weekend/early next week.

I think July Jubilee went live on July 24th, so 2 weeks after that would make it due yesterday. So yeah seems like it should definitely be any day now. They go up at 7am PST right?

Thursday does seem to be the day for Indie Royale, so it looks like we'll all have a few more games in our Steam and Desura libraries come tomorrow night.

@Walkonshadows: You Railworksed it up with all the Saints Row Franchise giveaways that costed like a nickel and were worth like a thousand dollars. :p I mean that's fine if someone wants to go through all that but I don't necessarily feel like it. I'd rather just give away what I want when I want and not stress about the meta game of trying to go for the highest markups etc.

Also, a high $ contributor now, isn't the same as when it first started and won't be the same a month from now, 6 months etc. More and more people will get to that high dollar level and a lot of people know how to work the system.

Also I have to say I don't like how that system basically encourages people to exploit it and go for the number vs just giving away what they want to give away or what others really want. That sort of thing got the whole Railworks spam. While I know Saints Row is more mainstream and something people want more, it's still the same principle.

I just don't want to get caught up in the whole meta game of it. And I think for someone like that the odds are terrible unless you do group giveaways.

FWIW All I have been entering lately are group and contributor giveaways but my contributor level is only ~ $150 which I know is not much and could be a lot higher if I worked the system but I'm not going to stress over it.

I still think the whole contributor system was the worst thing that could have happened to Steamgifts.

Hmm The Secret World is up for pre-order sale with a Steam exclusive bonus.

It looks like the Steam version is also not published by EA. I guess Funcom better hope they don't go tits up or you can kiss any discounts goodbye.

*Edit: Apparently Funcom who are making The Secret World also made The Longest Journey. Interesting.

Okay Motoki, how many of these stellar games have you tried?

John Deere Drive Green
18 Wheels of Steel Long Haul
Prison Tycoon 4 Supermax
Hunting Unlimited 5
Big City Rigs Bus Driver
AC-130 Operation Devastation
Big City Rigs Garbage Truck Driver
18 Wheels of Steel Extreme Trucker 2

I wish Funcom would get to work on The Longest Journey 3.
TLJ1 was great and one of the best adventure games ever made;
Dreamfall was pretty good.

EDIT:
I wasn't super-thrilled w/ The Secret World, when I was in the Beta Weekend right before the game was released - thank God for NO NDA.
Great premise, great story-telling, great writing, great dialogue, and really good voice-acting.
Not-so-great execution on the gameplay, to say the least.
Questing in the first zombie-littered area really needed more than just "Kill X enemies", "Set X enemies on fire", "go to X locations", "Find X people", etc etc.
Combat felt floaty and not-so-hot, as well.
TSW Beta was like 30 GB in size, BTW.

Sadly I don't think I have tried any of them but I want them all! Well I want the ones on Steam more but I might track the other ones down at some point too even though knowing the continent of Europe that they came from they've probably got some nasty DRM on them.

Sorry for late response. This was talked about before the SS. I believe Utopian ran into this problem so she could explain it much better than I can, but I believe what happened was she had an Xbox Live account which uses the same password as GFWL. But the GFWL doesn't accept numbers in the password, so if your password has numbers your locked out of GFWL. All it takes is a password change, but it's a real annoyance.

Again, I believe this is what happened, but my memory isn't what it used to be.

Wait...did Retail version use Origin? Require Origin?

TSW Beta I had didn't force Origin on the user.
I DL'ed it straight from Funcom.

Not sure if the final version (now out for public) uses or even requires Origin.
I hope not!

Did you try TSW out during the past weekend's FREE WEEKEND?

I remember playing through those about 8 years ago and my interest in adventure games was reignited. Glad you took the chance and picked those up. I plan on replaying them on Steam after working off some of my backlog.
