CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I feel exactly the same way; then again there is also no need to unlock/purchase any different cars since all the story and side missions give you cars, and even if you brought a car out from your garage to do dares and stunts, it seems like you're limiting yourself by not shifting out of it haha.
re: my Darksiders performance issue... I downloaded this DxWnd tool to force Darksiders to run windowed, now it runs smooth! Never experienced this with any other game.
That is crazy, I also forgot to mention trying to lower ,"pre-rendered frames" to 1 in nviada control as well. But as long as it works and you can play we'll count that up as a victory! :bouncy:Even if this has to be the pickest game on what works and what doesn't.
Is Payday worth for the single player part ?
I would not recommend Payday for single player to anyone other than a hard- and I do mean extremely hardcore- shooter fanatic for solely single player. You'd have to constantly manage the CPU's and practice levels till you leveled up a sufficient amount to carry your team. It would be a farming exercise and not very fun, in my opinion. As a co-op game and with "smart" partners, this can can be brilliant. Without those conditions in place, Payday is a mediocre and bland game.

I hope faster than light makes its way onto steam. Anyone heard if that may be?

Edit: Should have looked at their site...it will be.
It's a Steam code, redeemed like all other Steam keys. But why would that invalidate it? I've never heard of this before, but I guess I've never tried to enter a code for something that I didn't have a prerequisite (?) for. If you're in doubt though, I'd just wait it out until you get the game. Not like the code will magically go bad. =P

I tried activating mine before installing the game, Steam will tell you that the code requires the base game, it doesn't activate the code. Tell's you to activate the code after installing the base game. now, whether there is an expiration on the code by Alienware is another issue.
Thanks for the quick answers! Keeping the code in a safe place until I pick up the game on sale.

I concur - I picked it up a few days ago for $5 and just wanted to get a feel for the controls by playing single-player. I'm a fairly decent gamer and got my butt handed to me over and over again.

I'm hoping the multi-player is better.

Multiplayer is where it shines. Even playing with people you don't know it's good. I haven't ran into any douches like you do in most games like this. Honestly the playerbase is smaller but similar to killing floor( not many douches)

Ehh, I've run into quite a few idiots when playing with randoms, but their playerbase is generally very solid because mostly people who understand and like the game will be the only ones still playing. Some of the more experienced players are very hostile to a medium/low players, though, because of Payday's difficulty factor; so it really depends on who you run into. Side note: if another newbie random fucks up the stealth approach in the first minute, I'm going to split punch their genitals, rip said damaged genitals off, and beat them to death with it, screaming "Fatality" as they fall.

This is the reason I don't play online too often. Love the game, but I suck at it. Not on purpose, but I probably would be the one shooting at the SUV from 3 blocks away in the alley or killing all the hostages. In fact in all my play throughs I have not kept one hostage. In the heat of the moment they all look like dirty cops to me.

I find offline mode fun though so it's not an issue. I suck at it, but I enjoy the challenge of trying to pass a stage. And most of the time it's my AI teammates who keep me alive.

I don't mind a player just learning the ropes and having some difficulty. Hell, for me half the fun of Payday are the moments where you win despite major screw-ups. Like in the last game I played, I got downed 7 times and we had several instances where only 1 of the team was left standing to heal everyone else or wait for revivals. We were so ridiculously close at least 5-6 times to failing, but we made it through and it was an epic mission because of that.

What I do mind is players who repeatedly don't attempt to learn from their mistakes or listen to other players who are explaining better routes or just suggesting to lessen the load by following the instructions the mission intro gives every time you start up. That's where I draw the line with randoms and kick or leave if I'm not the host. It's just not fun to have to deal with someone who doesn't even try to think about how to best approach the mission when they're shown and told way, way less difficult options. ;)

Pic of end mission result in spoiler below (BTW, I'm not level 166; this is YaoYao's pic xD):

Anything monthly makes me feel as if I am paying rent, which is why I tend to steer clear of those. I just don't like the idea of a specific date to meet a specific payment or termination of your license. Not kewl.

Yeah, I've only touched Payday as a casual game to play with people you know. If you can get 2-3 more people that you know who you know would enjoy it, add some sort of mic support, then you're good to have fun through the missions.

Definitely took me an hour to read from where I had last stopped. Man... so much activity in the past 24 hours.

Yep I dident like Trine one bit, most other people really like it. I just started playing Amnesia: The Descent, with surround sound headphones and lights out........very dissapointed in game, dont see what all the hype was about, I gave it about 90 mins, but gave up, no direction on where to do, cant find the damn Wine Cellar key. Spent almost 30 mins just looking for that so I can progress story, and cant find the damn key.

I'd say it's worth looking up where to find the key so you can move forward as you're really only at the beginning of the game. I had trouble finding that key at first, too. But at this point, you haven't been introduced to the creature that is hunting you, and he/it is what will undermine all sense of manliness in you

Edit: I will say that the beginning is slow. It's really just allowing you to get used to things without fear of getting killed. Later in the game, you'll be glad you were given time to get comfortable working the doors when you have to slam one really fast while you're trying to get away.

This is why I avoid multiplayer FPS's aside from TF2. Life's too short to spend it listening to some random yahoo in Payday or L4D2 raging at me over a video game just because I'm inexperienced.

Yeah, you definitely have a big learning curve for a game of this difficulty, so play with friends (or fellow CAG's ) and repeat levels on easy mode several times at first. Slowly work your way up to normal once you've got more weapons and upgrades in your chosen tree. It's all about finding one group of people willing to learn alongside you and assist their teammates whenever it's wise to do so. I've mainly played with 1 group in Payday and it's been a blast figuring things out and really getting teamwork going via the Vent server they use. It's just great fun.

That's a cool title, but not sold on it. Might wait to see if it ever hits a bundle. I enjoy the retro style as much as the next man, but sometimes it just seems to be an excuse to go cheap. The game play looks OK, but something about it just seems a bit off in the vid.

Hopefully they'll have something else too? Not really big on Kalypso games. Bang Bang Racing looks cool, but not for $20 bucks and it would be much more enticing if it was called Bang Bang Bang Racing. Since it just came out I doubt it will hit 75% off, but I will add it to my wishlist for the confetti releasing cars.

Same... None of the Kalypso games are really my cup of tea.

I'm currently debating on Payday since the deal is over soon, but I will probably pass...again. One of these days it will get me :p

I REALLY like Port Royale. PR3 looks fairly decent. Just not buying until it's greater than 50% off.

Hah, apparently 3 is a step down from the previous renditions.... NM... 75%+ or bust for reviews that low.

I decided to wait (again) on Payday as well. I would prefer to pay it with a gamepad (I know some people shout blasphemy when things like this are said). Unfortunately that is something their devs say they will code on PC.

I might be tempted if they run the Tropico 4 bundle again. I hate that these big bundles never seem to include all the DLC.

So while I while I was waiting for Steam to update, I came across this:

http://storybundle.com/

"Welcome to StoryBundle! We're featuring our first bundle, the Big Bang Bundle, where you can get seven fantastic ebooks at one low pay-what-you-want price."

Completely off-topic, but it might be interesting to somebody. And no, ebooks do not activate no Steam. ;)

Of course if you are solely a PC gamer and have an avid hatred of controllers I can entirely understand disliking racing games... or sports games... or third person games.... or some platformers... or some RPGs... or twin stick shooters... or some schmups... or any local multiplayer games. One recommendation for the for the crowd that dislikes some of the "harder" racers is TrackMania Nations Forever it's free on steam. It has a simple physics model, and lots of *zany* tracks. It is mean to be played with keyboard. I wish there were more racers with zany/fantasy tracks these days. Oh in case you hadn't seen this, real life hotwheels double dare loop.

Edit: Also Zombie Driver was a real hoot. It drops to a few bucks on sale and had a demo.

Hear hear! I really hate arbitrary calendar month pay-for-time model. I really wish someone would adopt a pay-for-playtime model (e.g. $10 for 40 hours of playtime redeemable whenever). That's somewhat similar to an arcade/D&B model.

Why the outrage? I don't think it's been on sale for... oh 3 or 4 days. :wall: It would win an award for the most overpromoted game of 2011, imo. And had more DLC than you can shake the SR3 "The Penetrator" at.

If they keep this up you may actually have to work on lowering that backlog....that, or make a spreadsheet.

Except that it's Steamworks and has been on sale on a bunch of other stores as well.

Honestly Paradox should just mark it down to a regular price of $2.50 and call it good.

*Edit: 4 5 times in a year halfway through just on Steam alone is also still a lot IMO. There are plenty of games on Steam that never go on daily deal, in fact the majority of the libary of games they sell don't.

Steamgamesales, sort of...

http://www.steamgamesales.com/ZImn3/magicka

It's not comprehensive though, for example it is missing Amazon, Gamestop, Getgamesgo, Gametap and I'm sure some others.

Deals4Downloads covers more retailers and more games but it doesn't give a detailed history, just the lowest price ever.
