CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Also, ugh, guys, stop tempting me with Binary Domain. It makes no sense for me to buy yet another game I won't have time to play for a while!
Since when does making sense have anything to do with the way we buy games?
Welcome back to thread! :D
Aw, thanks. It's nice to be missed. :D
Don't feel TOO badly. iPads are awesome.

You wanna know what's weird? I feel bad because I know I'll be neglecting this thread soon... doing a cross-country move this week then I start student teaching in September. I am gonna have NO time to play games let alone post on a thread about said games :p
iPads are indeed awesome.

Feeling an obligation to check a thread on the internet regularly? Not so much. ;)

Why not use said awesome iPad to check said thread? Nothing beats a double dose of awesomeness!
Delve Deeper is totally parent-friendly unless you feel the need to watch every moment of the monster turns (which I wish could be skipped, perhaps along with an option to grant a text recap). The game is turn-based, so you can easily enter your actions and walk away for however many minutes you need. As far as saving goes, each game runs fifteen to thirty minutes depending on map size and number of opponents. I suppose localized MP would make it run longer due to more human input delay.

The lack of saving never bothered me since there is no campaign mode. You play individual stages always starting from scratch, the only cumulative gains being the treasures you discovered added to your list and the achievements. Since many of the achievements require playing in very specific ways, so I felt that the game being individual runs was a blessing.
Ya, I guess it is just because how long turns take(watching everything move around) so I can see games lasting like a hour+ or so. So would be nice to like hit a quick save and then when I have time again could just quick load from Turn 12 out of 23 and continue on my progress.
I'll take a copy of your parent friendly list. Also, if you could include the length of games, and required time for game sessions I'd appreciate it. Example- Bethesda games require long sessions. It's impossible to sit down and play for 15-30 minute at a time- they require hours upon hours for each sit down. It would be really helpful if you could include games like that in your guide. :D
I am kind of surprised there is not a list or website that could be google'd. So for a quick list out of what I have played in the last month or so.

Avernum/Geneforge/Avadon - The entire game is turn based even moving like the older rpg's of yore it is inspired by. Great thing for that is you can just get up and come back 5 hours later and everything will be in the exact spot. Plus can be played one handed great for when you have a baby in the arms. Games take around 90-100 hours to beat one of the best parental friendly rpg games I think.

Binary Domain- Has a pause button but really just played it during the weekends and at nap times due to it needing more of a serious time commitment as it only has check point saving IIRC so there is no easy just quick save and quit. Game took around 8 hours to beat

Darkness 2- Check point only saves ; but each level you get to from a hub based like location and each mission seemed to last for only 30-40 minutes. Game overall was like 4-5 hours long 2-3 hours for the extra vendetta side story which was worth it and fun for one play though. Only real issue you could say is that there is a ton of story and cut scenes in The Darkness 2, so if your kid decides now is the time wake up/cry/get hurt/need you, During a cut scene you'll be lost when it comes to the story; as like in other games there is no way to pause a cut scene :wall:

Darksiders 1- Was kind of easy to pick up and play, has check point saves plus a save/load feature not sure where that picks you up though as the auto/check point saves were pretty frequent. time to beat 13-14 hours and time per session 1-2 hours or so. Though some of that 13-14 hours was back tracking and picking up all the hidden like life/wrath/armor shards kind of like Zelda games and the hidden hearts and such you can get if you want to track them down. This game is a little bit friendlier I think because of the Zelda beat these four dungeons and then the final one kind of set-up. Allowed me to slowly make way through one dungeon in multiple sessions and then the next session just work my way to the next and then stop and resume at the next session.

Saints Row 3rd- Only auto saves(end of missions/buying something/upgrading..etc) or hard saves count. Check points are only good till you quit the game or the current mission and your progress in a mission isn't saved if you manually save :whistle2:# Other than that it is a good game for quick session at 13 hours or so and on the final mission. But each session can be short or long due to the open world nature each mission is usually 15 - 20 minutes or so if that. However, The game does love to extend out some missions to a surprise 40 minutes out of the blue and with no real saving during a mission quickly becomes the downside when it comes to parent friendliness or even crashing.

Freedom Force- Has quick save and is a real time pauseable strategy game like Baldurs Gate. So can easily just pause and alt-tab, F5, or save during anything :D Because of that average session can be 30 minutes to 3 hours. Total length is 13-15 hours or so and now looking forward to playing the sequel.

Drakensang:The Dark Eye- Is basically a better Dragon Age Origins at least in gameplay and customization. Has quick save, and auto saves(though only does it when entering a new zone and each zone is huge so could be several hours between them) as well as you can save in combat! so never had a real problem when things came up. Plus can just hit space bar and pause the game as well. Game length 46-50 hours and each session you'll want like 1h+ or so just to make progress. Bad thing is like most modern RPG's need two hands to play.

Dungeons of Dredmor - Fun rouge like game if not the best one maybe even, Each dungeon and like layout is randomly generated and then you get to explore it has several options like; perma death, and rather or not you want to be able to save or not. But otherwise for the settings I picked there is no perma death and can save and load at any time. Plus the game being totally turn based, like in Avernum/Geneforge/Avadon, where when you move then everything gets to move. can just walk away for hours and come back  Plus one handed gameplay

Wow that was longer then I thought and only covered a few games and only briefly oh well hope that helps someone out there.
I find that the King's Bounty series really doesn't take large amounts of time to have fun with. When I first started on the first one, I played the heck out of it sure, but since then I hop on it every once in awhile and do a battle or two, and then move on. It's a nice strategy/RPG.

Armored Princess was just in the Indie Gala if you got that.
Ya Kings bounty is great so is Civilization, Fallout 1+2, Baldurs Gate 1 + 2 and Icewind Dale 1 +2. In fact many older games with turn based systems are the best can easily be played one handed not system intensive so can just be alt-tabbed even if in the middle of gameplay and not at a saving point. and a lot can just be paused whenever you want with just the space bar or just walked away from.

Also plan on playing a lot more Adventure Games one reason why I wanted to know people's favorites during the sale. Figure Adventure Games would be friendly as well as can play one handed, and they react when you act so if you walk away nothing will happen, plus one handed gameplay as you interact in most of them just with the mouse. Unless there is a time based adventure game :hot:
Yeah, I found that really annoying. There are some very good ideas in the game, so I hope if and when the sequel is made, the devs rectify some of the mistakes.
Ya game is fun and seems like all those stories I hear about all those ASCII games like dwarf fortress. Hopefully they'll make a sequel with saving if not I guess just alt-tab and coming back later will have to be the solution.
Also, Analogue: A Hate Story is really entertaining. Though, I had to go to a guide right off the bat. I had no idea how to work the Override Terminal. Other than that hick up it's been a really enjoyable ga... story.
Each turn in Civ is only a few minutes.

I loved SR3 - that game was funny, witty, outrageous, awesome, wild, crazy, insane, and FUN.

So can easily just pause and alt-tab, F5, or save during anything :D Because of that average session can be 30 minutes to 3 hours. Freedom Force is great - one of the best "comic-book" style games around. Oh, and the voice-acting - it's over-the-top and outstanding.

I need to give this game more time. I've had it for years...and it always winds up back in the backlog b/c I play something else immediately.

For turn-based - I'd also like to mention Arcanum. Plays better in TB than in RT. But, yeah - Arcanum's underrated, in my book.
Also, since you mentioned some old Infinity Engine games, I have to mention - even though it's in real-time with pause - the one and only Planescape: Torment. That's one of the best RPG's ever made.

Don't get me wrong both games are really fun, I was only rating them on how easy it is for a parent or in my case a stay at home mom with a 4 month old. When it comes to how friendly the game's check points/saving and rather not you can pause during a cut scene.

Like with Darkness 2 I knew the game had a ton of cut-scenes so from a parental stand point had to know I was safe while playing it so like at night time or weekends. Wasn't a nap time kind of game as never knew when a cut scene would pop up and when the baby would wake up. Why some games are also rated as one handed playable. So you can hold baby in one arm and then play with just the mouse if you wanted too. Though really in times like that I am glad there is Netflix!

Freedom Force is great - one of the best "comic-book" style games around. Oh, and the voice-acting - it's over-the-top and outstanding.

Ya I don't even read or like comics and loved Freedom Force. It's a setting I have not seen in any other game plus it has a amazing combat system.

Ya it is a really long game and really while it is better than Dragon Age, the story is a kind of generic and lacking so the only real push is the combat system and customization I hear the sequel has a much much better story. So looking forward to playing that one.

For turn-based - I'd also like to mention Arcanum. Plays better in TB than in RT. But, yeah - Arcanum's underrated, in my book.

I really need to play Arcanum; I've wasted so much time just creating characters. The game has such a really well done and engaging character creation but every time I play it I always end up quitting I think next time i'll try it in TB mode. Ya need to play Planescape as well only issue I had was the combat, though I hear that is the worst point of the game, so may just put it on easy and then enjoy the writing and story.
Why not use said awesome iPad to check said thread? Nothing beats a double dose of awesomeness!
Agreed, I browse cheapassgamer all the time on my ipad, especially the ios thread, but definitely this thread too.

I think it has gotten more common in recent years for dev's, for some reason, to rely on checkpoint saves than actually letting us save at anytime - especially for games multi-platformed for PC and consoles.

Ya I don't even read or like comics and loved Freedom Force. It's a setting I have not seen in any other game plus it has a amazing combat system.
Freedom Force was great - really loved that game.
I have the FF Vs. Third Reich on disc somewhere - but for some reason, it's another game that wound-up in the backlog.

Ya it is a really long game and really while it is better than Dragon Age, the story is a kind of generic and lacking so the only real push is the combat system and customization I hear the sequel has a much much better story. So looking forward to playing that one.
Oh, I don't know Drakensang: The Dark Eye is better than Dragon Age: Origins, IMHO. Many are not as great as DAO, as far as I'm concerned. I have yet to get around to buying River of Time + Philleason's Secret.

I really need to play Arcanum; I've wasted so much time just creating characters. The game has such a really well done and engaging character creation but every time I play it I always end up quitting I think next time i'll try it in TB mode.
Combat is UNFAIR in RT, if you ask me - especially if, I recall, you don't sink enough points into Dexterity (or whatever the speed skills are heere).
Put it like classic Fallout 1 and 2 - throw it in TB. It's MUCH better in TB-mode.

Ya need to play Planescape as well only issue I had was the combat, though I hear that is the worst point of the game, so may just put it on easy and then enjoy the writing and story.
Combat feels like most Infinity Engine games. It's not horrible, mind you - it's just nowhere as great as other games in its genre and on the same engine (i.e. BG series). Honestly - the writing, prose, dialogue, voice-acting and amount of decision-making that game has is just so amazing in this game. EXTREMELY HIGHLY recommend this game - as it's one of the best games ever made, IMHO.
I surely thought it was worth the $10, back when Amazon DVG had it on sale, a bit ago.
I should run through it to see the multiple endings and take different paths.
It has multiple endings? :whistle2:o
It has multiple endings? :whistle2:o
YES.

Depends on your trust levels w/ some characters;
And also some of your in-game decisions on who you take w/ you during what missions.

The game makes these feel so natural, you don't even realize sometimes you're making decisions.
Other games, make them feel....VERY weighty - i.e. like MANY RPG's.

EDIT:
SPOILERS in the walkthrough link below:
Walkthrough for Binary Domain - discusses in the Endings section some of the possible permutations.

I've wondered several times what would happen if I'd picked different people on missions, cause the story seemed to directly focus on the ones I took with me and I began thinking... "I don't see how the story could progress without this person on my team."

Regarding Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken- It's a decent action, platformer, puzzler. Shooting is fun and can get very hectic, platforming can be a bit difficult, and the puzzles are generally very linear, and simple; I figured out most after a few minutes. Length of the game: 5-6 hours is probably the max where most people would take to beat it, but it also has an altered game campaign for 2 players. I didn't play through that fully, but it should offer another 2-3 hours at least. You can also play through with different guns/classes, so you have a harder or easier time. I chose the medium assault chicken to run around with. Worked pretty well for me.

BTW, my favorite part of the game came mostly from the OST and visual presentation in game (great and funny dialogue in the text boxes from enemies) and with cutscenes. It's just very fluid and really entertaining to watch. Gameplay's not bad, just a bit hit and miss with aiming and timing elements. I would recommend this game to people who enjoy fair, but difficult sidescrolling shoot-em-ups. Also, love some of the power-ups you get
like the brainwashing mechanic- quite morbid and really fun to mess around with the fellow enemies and their resulting dialogue.

Drakensang (individually & complete $10.82) was on was on sale on the first week of the gamersgate sale. Sorry if I didn't mention it. That version still has... securerom? The physical Drakensang Complete Saga is $14 on Amazon and multiple reports indicate it's drm free.

@Sophita, hear hear! I fail to understand why so many single player games don't implement proper anytime pause (including cutscenes). One of the more elegant approaches to cutscenes I've seen (can't remeber in which game(s)) is simply at the end to have to push a button to continue, with the option to replay the cutscene.

Curse you people - after catching up in the thread, kinda wish I had picked up BD after all the recommendations.

Oh well, hopefully there will be a "next time" soon. :)

What makes Drakensang: The Dark's Eye combat so good or the game so good? I have seen mixed reviews and videos so I wasn't sure what made it that fun. Some videos I watched looked a little boring to me so would love to hear more insight.

I loved DA:O and loved the DA:O combat since I would always play that on no-reload nightmare and time my special attacks, use terrain, mob control if I was the mage, etc...

I know what you mean. I feel similarly. It's been on sale at $10 multiple times in the past few months (notably on Amazon for quite some time). Tony indicates Amazon will be having a sales Bonanza around labor day.

When I have a game going all I think about is who to befriend/fight, what to build, where to settle, how do I want to try to win, does my population have enough food, why is Gandhi such an Ahole, ect.

CIV is the gaming equivalent of Pringles chips(once you pop you can't stop). Once you open a can of Pringles typically you eat most of the can. If you start a game of CIV you can't stop and when you do it's like five hours later and the sun is rising. (just one more turn)

I wish Arcanum and Planescape Torment were available on Steam. I know they are on GOG but I want them on Steam!
Hahahaaa... right. 2 hours of Civ feels like 5 mins of real time. That game is a massive time sink.

I've sunk over 50 hours so far into that gem- and still don't fully understand it. I want to play it more, but it's so life consuming. When I have a game going all I think about is who to befriend/fight, what to build, where to settle, how do I want to try to win, does my population have enough food, why is Gandhi such an Ahole, ect.
I like the fact you can play differently each time. Be more diplomatic, be a tyrant, conqueror, backstabber, etc. Honestly, I will never get tired of the CIV series.

Wait for a sale on GOG or somewhere!

I'm actually surprised those ain't on Steam. Activision (publisher for Arcanum) and Hasbro (publisher for PST) should bring them here.

Most games that I have that don't require or utilize Steamworks, I do add them normally as Non-Steam games. Sure, you don't get all Steam benefits for adding a Non-Steam game, but I'm always online on Steam, anyways.

I've been close to buying both many times from GOG.

Me too and I think that is why I've just been holding out on them. I used to have disc copies of each but they were ruined because they were left for months in a non-temp controlled environment on accident (also lost other games the same way).

I know I've done that with non-Steam ones also, it's just easier to have all my games in one place.
I think it has gotten more common in recent years for dev's, for some reason, to rely on checkpoint saves than actually letting us save at anytime - especially for games multi-platformed for PC and consoles.
Ya and that used to be one of the great things about PC games in fact what I love the most about older games is you could save anytime, even in combat. True you could just save/reload through pretty much any "challenge." However, that was also one of the best parts I got to choose how much I saved; now days the developers feel they have to micromanage every inch of your play experience including when you save. This is the single biggest change between new game development and older games.

Oh, I don't know Drakensang: The Dark Eye is better than Dragon Age: Origins, IMHO. Many are not as great as DAO, as far as I'm concerned. I have yet to get around to buying River of Time + Philleason's Secret.
I think for me Drakensang wins in combat and creation..Though storyline DAO easily wins as Drakensang is a throw back to, "Your the hero, kill things" Luckily the sequel improved the story dramatically I hear.

For me the classes in DAO have always been kind of dull and boring, when you compare them to KOTOR or Badlurs Gate/Neverwinter. All of the spells for the mages were even set in stone lost that magic of having 100-200 spells to throw around and reduced to like 10-20.

I'll definitely pick it up from GoG now and bump it up in my, "Need to play" list. :bouncy:
What makes Drakensang: The Dark's Eye combat so good or the game so good? I have seen mixed reviews and videos so I wasn't sure what made it that fun. Some videos I watched looked a little boring to me so would love to hear more insight.

I loved DA:O and loved the DA:O combat since I would always play that on no-reload nightmare and time my special attacks, use terrain, mob control if I was the mage, etc...
Well there is all of the same combat from DA:O but you can also fully upgrade any of your characters in any weapon and any skill. There 28 non combat skills and around 20 or so combat skills and you use your xp you get to level up each individual skill and also your stat points.

Drakensang uses The Dark Eye which is a well known German pen and paper
rpg system. So the difference is like comparing the amount of freedom in classes and customization of DnD to DA:O. As a example there is 28 classes you can be in Drakensang like a Pirate, Necromancer, Archer, Ranger, Elf Warrior, or Human Fighter. and while they all can get the same skills each race has a different magic list to choose from and also some classes are only half mages and the dice rolls I don't even know what those mean as they use a weird system im not used to.

But all add it all up and the game really makes you feel you have a ton of freedom to pick your team and design them how you want with a ton of options. Where the game is kind of bland is the story it isn't bad it just isn't amazing either.Though it did keep me entertained for the entire 40 hours the game took.
Nothing is worse than finally beating a tough boss- cut scene starts, and then the kid goes in to melt down mode. :bomb:
And with Murphy's law that is always when it happens :cold:, even worse is when the game doesn't have subtitles on their cut scenes. I swear developers need to add in pauseable cut scenes or at the very least let us re-watch them at any time.

Maybe more developers just need to have kids or something. As the majority of gamers who grew up in the 80's and 90's are now parents or adults with limited time/life and who can't just ensure that in the next 30-60 minutes nothing will happen.

If they want to be like Hollywood with tons of story and cinematics great, just let us pause the story like I can with movies and netflix.
If you start a game of CIV you can't stop and when you do it's like five hours later and the sun is rising. (just one more turn)
So true. I played Civ5 only for about 5h, but those 5h were straight till sunrise and after winning the campaign I felt like I should uninstall this game or my studies would be in danger. So I uninstalled it and went sleep. Now the lack of Gods & Kings is keeping me away from this game, but I'm sure I will come back to it, when price of the expansion pack hits $5.
I'll have to agree with Lefty as well; I just never and still do not "get" the term. Doesn't help I once knew guys where like every other word was "No Homo!" if anything I thought they were both "in the closet" because it seemed like they were both so obsessed with not being homo.

Not saying every guy who says it is or anything; just it is a really weird thing to say during a conversation,"So I was out with Mike and we were getting McDonalds together, No Homo, and I got a large #3.."

Plus I've always wondered what is the feminine version of, "No Homo!"(If now the term means something anti-manly..hmm). Oh well, Hey Lefty you sound like you would be amazing to go running with, No Macho! :whee:
Thanks, I'd go running with you anytime. ;)
Last night I played some Awesomenauts and Payday. Awesomenauts is a little chaotic - at some points in the game I had no idea where I was running or who I was shooting at because of all the characters onscreen, haha, but it IS fun. The AI can be kind of stupid, though, so the more real people you can get to play with you, the better. Last night I only played with one other friend.
Yes! This game gets very chaotic, and the worse part is I can never see in what direction I'm shooting. Half the time I think I'm killing my own bots. But I agree, it is definitely a fun game, to be played in short bursts. I was pretty surprised how long the battles can be. Also, I hate that the left stick (I have it on the PS3) controls both walking and aiming, which gets very confusing in all the chaos.
I love you (no qualifier needed)

It makes me so sad that so many people are now obsessed with the new series (NOT A REBOOT MIND YOU); but those same people have usually NEVER seen any of the past episodes! Not at all saying the new series is bad, its FANTASTIC AND AWESOME; but I just wish people would expand their viewing of shows they already claim to like.
First off, damn I missed all the Doctor Who talk. Secondly, yeah, at least when it comes to my experience the majority of my generation (Y) have very little patience with any pre-80s media. My sister for example cannot stand watching anything before the seventies and thinks most of the movies are lame and/or boring. Some of my friends are like this too. Thankfully, I'm not though, I love older movies/tv shows.

I'm a pretty new Doctor Who fan and did indeed start with new series, but have since started to watch the older episodes. Going in chronological order, so far I'm up to mid-Troughton, and boy do new Doctor Who fans not know what there missing! Granted I love cheesy, bad movies, so that helps a bunch, but it's a great series and there is just something so lovable about the doctor and what he stands for that makes me want to meet him more than any other made-up character. No matter how campy or bad the plot is I always enjoy the ride that is watching the show. And the 2nd Doctor is so my favorite thus far (as well as the companion Jamie). :D
Also another reason I will never watch Dr.Who that is like what 60 years of back story to get the jokes and story.
I haven't watched all the old seasons yet, but I can honesty say that there is very little mention of past-goings-ons or jokes for that matter. The new series is very accessible to new viewers. I mean there is one episode where an old companion shows up, but its nothing more than a guest appearance. There are no really obscure references other than know she is. Please, do yourself a favor and give the show a chance.

Did anyone else find Burnout Paradise to be extremely disappointing? I loved Burnout 1 and 2, some of my favorite racing games way back when. Burnout 3 was eh and Burnout Revenge was even more eh. I can't seem to enjoy Paradise at all either, I'm maybe 2 hours in and I keep playing hoping I end up liking it.

I was at a birthday party for my cousin's kid and my cousin's husband gave me a copy of the Prima guide for Saints Row the Third. As it turns out, he wrote it.

I have the same opinion of Prima guides as I'm sure most of you do (I still own my hysterically inaccurate Prima Everquest guide from 1999) but I still think it's kind of cool that he literally wrote the book on SRTT.

I love it.

It's very pretty and the handling isn't too stringent -- a critical reason why I don't like sim racers. That said, I'm a racing-game greenhorn and Paradise is my first Burnout.

Same boat. I love it. But, I haven't played a racing game since the first Mario Kart.

My only complaint is its a ghost world. I don't need people to accidentally run over, but I'd like the cars to have drivers.

That's pretty wild. I was under the impression that Prima had teams who wrote those guides. Does that mean he did it all himself and just had editors?

Yeah, I usually do definitely prefer the "Save anytime" system.

Games would probably feel even shorter, if we didn't have to die, reload a checkpoint which is who knows how far back, repeat cycle until successful.
My problem is I often feel that checkpoint saves don't come soon enough, in many games...

I think DA2's classes were more interesting - as Rogues weren't basically "Weak Warrior" characters.
Of course, overall -- DA2 is nowhere even close to as remotely as amazing as the original DAO.

I'll definitely pick it up from GoG now and bump it up in my, "Need to play" list. :bouncy:
I'm sure it'll be on sale on GOG - as it's been before. If you ain't bought it yet and don't plan to get around soon to it - maybe you'll want to wait for a sale on there? It's bound to hit a sale there.

Here's a nice Modder's Guide for Planescape: Torment that is on Destructoid.
You'll probably at least want to do a widescreen mod w/ it...especially if you are playing on a big monitor w/ HD resolutions.

I've never installed DX SDK on any Windows systems, so you will probably want to avoid that step. That could be more problems than it's worth.

You could always tag in the command line for your shortcut or game's EXE after the location of the thing "-NO3D" (without quotes) to force it to not use any 3D effects at all, as that's always been the problem w/ most Infinity Engine games on modern PC's (since Win XP days)...and some other old games like Arcanum, as well.
Basically "-NO3D" tag turns off DirectX HardWare Acceleration (for graphics) for the game you tag it w/ on that shortcut or EXE.

I haven't tried PS:T on Win 7 - I still got in on 4-CD set somewhere (it was a X-Mas Present from my dad, one of those years...not too long after it came out). I should finish my 2nd play-through of it. I don't play many games more than once, I should note.

EDIT:
Here's another guide on GOG on Modding PST.

I didn't speak to him in any depth about it and wouldn't want to over-speak and cause him any issues but he has top billing with one other author credited who (I believe) assisted him.

Now I'm pretty sure that's just for the actual authorship and there were others involved in collecting the information he turned into a book. And, of course, others involved in the book process (layout, design, editors, etc)

Burnout Paradise is my first Burnout game, and, right now, I've only played about 3 hours or so. So far, it has at least been a nice diversion. I'm not sure it'll hold my interest, but it's an entertaining racer. (By the way, does "Paradise City" have to be the first song played EVERY time I launch the game, Criterion?)

Blur will always be my favorite arcade-styled racer of this generation, and it's a real shame the game didn't sell better. With low sales for both Blur and James Bond 007: Blood Stone, Bizarre Creations had to shut its doors.

I am sad.

That's true. I'm a writer myself and have dabbled in technical writing too. Basically any kind of "instructions" fall under the scope of technical writing (the user manual to you computer, to the instructions for your electric razor).

Basically you have the technical writer, and a number of SMEs (subject matter experts). The job is as much communication as is it writing, since half the work is learning exactly about what you're writing about. That lends well to the finished product too, since the material is coming from the same learning perspective, instead of a lot of drolling, wordy explanations from someone who knows far more than you.

Anyways, just interesting to think how that might work when it comes to game guides.

Bloodstone had nothing to do with it they closed like 2 weeks free that game came out. Data wast back yet. I free it's a shame they closed though. They never put out a bad game just a few games that were just a bit above average.

Yeah Blur was one of the most underrated games of the year. I had such a blast with it, but after the first two months, the already weak community died to the point where every night you'd play with the same group of people.

Sucks because you know companies will be hesitant to make another arcade Mario Kart-style racing game like Blur now because of it's failure.

FYI for those looking to pick up classics like Planescape: Torment and the Baldur's Gate series, check out the Dungeons & Dragons collections on Gamersgate. They've been under $7 for big collections of classics (even less if you have the IGN discount).

D&D Anthology: The Master Collection (no idea why it's forcing my link to the UK site)

 • Baldur's Gate 1
 • Baldur's Gate 2
 • Icewind Dale 1
 • Icewind Dale 2
 • Planescape: Torment
 • Temple of Elemental Evil

Looks like $14.99 for the base game. [Oops, I said it was now but Steam has it for $30]

Lowest anywhere was $9 from GamersGate back in early July.
