Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Your experience was completely different from mine. I hated that (it seemed like) 50% of the campaign was vehicle battles, it never really felt like they did anything with the reasonably interesting -- if implausible -- premise and the companion AI was ridiculously poor. And obnoxious. "Throw the grenade! Throw a grenade here! We need a grenade! Throw a grenade! Grenade here! Throw a grenade!" It was like hanging out with G.I. Rainman.

I can't speak for the MP though. But by the time I finished the SP portion, I uninstalled it and didn't look back.
Not to discount your opinion at all, but in all fairness, story implausibility and dipshit (companion) AI are present in most FPS, atleast to me; especially the former.

In regards to stupid companions, I still remember raging in World at War at the idiot soldiers running and crouching in front of me as I was shooting, causing the game to reload my last checkpoint. Or bumping me out into the open while I was trying to hide in a crack in the wall during the grenade spamming.
I keep getting a no subscription error when trying to install super crate box. Looks like some others are getting it on the community pages. Oh well I'll try it later.
Had the same but restarting Steam fixes it.

Which is why I prefer to avoid FPS's that rely heavily on AI companions. Like Homefront does. I didn't find the implausibility of the plot to be a detriment so much as the shallowness of it.

I got it because someone else raved about the setting and environment. It was good and had its moments (like making your way through a blasted out White Castle) but they never did much with it. The most unique environments were the suburban ones and you were either getting rushed through by your companions (and game mechanics like the never-ending waves of enemy soldiers unless you moved forward) or removed completely for more mundane environments (look, a farm! And a helicopter shootout over a highway!) Given that the setting is the best thing I can say for it, that's hardly a check in the plus column.

Maybe all that stuff happens all the time in the MP/SP sphere -- I generally play FPS's designed to be SP experiences. And I'll be the first to admit that games like Homefront are probably designed more around the MP with the SP tacked on just because it's expected. But it sure wasn't very good.
Oh yeah, and I liked Homefront too!

Sure, it's not the bestest shooter ever, but it is fun enough and you get about 6 hours of gameplay in single player for your $5.
A complete story experience in 6 hours actually increases the appeal for me.

Super Crate Box on steam! Is there anything to pay for? Maybe steam workshop?

I definitely agree they could have done more with the setting/enviroment. Much like you, I found certain scenes really fun (the opening chapter, the football stadium, the church and escape.) The helicopter/highway, and suberbia chapters were my least favorite. Infinite spawning AI are definitely something I can't stand in FPS's (I'm looking at you again, WaW,) but there was only a couple places I felt that that bogged you down. I much prefer strategizing over rushing through.

I definitely see some potential in it, which is why I am actually hoping they do a good job with the sequel. If they can address some of the problems we have both mentioned I could see this being a really interesting series, story-wise.

I also agree about the mulitplayer, and I think that's why it was so criticized. More was expected from it, yet the single player ended up being better (IMO). If they focussed more on the SP, maybe it would have corrected alot of the mistakes.

To be clear, I'm not saying Homefront is a great game, or can't miss game. I do think it's a decent-to-good game though, and one that's worth $5 - not $40. If your backlog is huge, or you're sick of shooters, don't bother.
Had the same but restarting Steam fixes it.
Thanks. Worked for me as well.

I enjoyed the SP and MP portions of Homefront. I think a lot of people "heard" that it was a bad game and then passed that info on without finding out firsthand.
A complete story experience in 6 hours actually increases the appeal for me.
While you might complete the story in 6 hours (took me 3 actually), I would hesitate to call it a complete story experience since it has no real beginning or ending, just a lot "Throw a grenade!" and "Run! Run! Run!" over and over and over. The squad AI is some of the worst I have ever seen, and it only comes off favorable when compared to Treyarch's COD games, which are some of my least favorite shooters of all time.

I will spoiler this bit where I complain about the story, but I don't think it will spoil all that much because I don't think the story matters whatsoever, though I will spoil it like crazy if you care.

The story goes, you are a pilot, so the rebels want you. So they go get you, getting themselves mostly wiped out in the process. Then there is a bunch of running around neighborhoods in scenes that were mostly repeats of MW2. Then there is a big scene in a tigerdirect parking lot. Do they have retail stores? Whatever, it doesn't matter because everyone is on fire now. Cue lots of yelling. Then you find out that you need to get gas and bring it to San Francisco. They needed you so you can cover the convoy of gas trucks all the way from Colorado. So you tag the trucks and then you steal them and then you escort them all the way to California. Then it is like, okay, here is your gas, and the game ends. You never even get to talk to the girl you just partnered up with while slaughtering hundreds of people across the land. And I know that people wanted that, because half of the screenshots in the game's hub on Steam are of her rear with captions like "Dat ass!"

But it is probably only the second worst modern military shooter I have played, so it has that going for it.
The multiplayer is battlefield + counterstrike.
I haven't played it, but by watching it, it doesn't look anything like Counterstrike. If anything, it looks almost identical to Call of Duty.

FWIW - The campaign for Homefront was half decent - as mentioned before, AI is rather dumb, but I kind of liked the story (yeah, I know, I'm a sucker for outlandish crap).

Not sure if MP community is still active, but I sunk 15-20 hours into it and enjoyed it. I got sidetracked with other games and stopped, but I can say it's worth the $5 if you're on the fence.

To anyone still on the fence about grabbing spec ops from Amazons deal. You should do it. The story alone is worth picking the game up.
Does anyone think that spec ops could drop to ~$10-15 by the steam winter sale?
Absolutely. It's not a huge seller and 2k Games has been pretty good about discounting games to 75% off. I'd be surprised if the regular price doesn't drop by then. $10-$15 by the Winter Sale seems very possible.

Agreed.

Played the demo and it was tons of fun, but I'll wait for a sub $10 before I bite. (huge backlog and all - I know, shocking ain't it)

When Yahtzee gave Spec Ops a good review, praising the story especially, it went on my "buy it when it gets under $10" list. If I didn't already have the Bioshock games, I may've bitten. With the backlog, I can wait.

It looks like I'll be holding out until the Winter Sale comes along. The Amazon price for the bundle is unexpectedly good, but, sadly, I already own Bioshock. (I still need to complete it, as well.)

Man, it didn't take us long to set our sights on the next major Steam sale.

Isn't that how it normally works? If its after the winter sale everyone talks about the summer one. If its after the summer one, everyone can't wait til the winter one. ;) Steam is not about games, its about sales.

This is gaben's plan all along. He doesn't care if you played 1,000 hours worth of games or 10, as long as your buying them, he makes money. When he puts them on sale, he makes more money.

So everyone wins, except our backlogs .
I just wanted to highlight this since Super Crate Box is, indeed, free on Steam.
I just tried installing it, it asked to open Steam, gave the install dialogue box and then got "An error occurred (no subscription)".

Weird.

Edit: Reading the last page, this seems to be a common issue.
So can anyone recommend any of those absurdly cheap paradox games? Never really paid them any mind.
If you're gonna grab one, grab the "Plethora of Paradox Games" for $11.54. That's only a buck or two more than Crusader Kings has been on sale anywhere, AND it comes with most of the DLC, Warlock, Magicka Collection, Majesty 1+2, and Victoria 2. All of those games are worth around $3-5 a piece, so you can quickly see the value...

Basically you're getting the cheapest deal around on CK2 + DLC, and another five games for free.

As for if the games are your style or not... who knows. CK2 (I haven't played it yet) is supposed to be one of the best strategy games ever made (more from a noble family politics angle), Magicka seems to be an arcadey action game that is supposed to be loads of fun, Warlock is a magic focused RTS (I think), Victoria is similar to CK2, and the Majesty games... You basically are building a medieval kingdom, so think RTS, but you're not in direct control of your troops. It's more a management thing (you put out bounties and incentives for your subjects and heroes to do things), but it's not super complicated like most RTS games. I recommend it.

In the end, for $11... Yeah.
So can anyone recommend any of those absurdly cheap paradox games? Never really paid them any mind.
Yeah, they're great for your Steam Gifts contributor value. XD

I bought that bundle last time it was offered primarily for Warlock. Haven't played it myself yet, but all I'd read before buying made it seem pretty solid.
Warlock isn't an RTS. It's a Civ-alike (turn based strategy).
Right, thanks for the catch. I haven't played it yet.

Well I've been off this thread for about a week, sad to see I only had about 30 pages to catch up in. Time for a page of rehashes!!

BUT FIRST!

* Face Kick Bundle sucks, don't think I need to go quoting for that one.
* I just got my Portal 2 coupon yesterday...yet it expires tomorrow and was good since the 16th?! I just don't get Steam sometimes... Anyways, its up for grabs!
* Got all new indie bundles released, regret nothing!
* People should be getting BeMine4 just for the Guns of Icarus Online code you'll get for $5+.
* I'm oh so very glad all the random Asian videos just so happened to end up posted on page 69 ;)

And finally....WHY HAS NO ONE MENTIONED THE SPECIAL REWARDS FOR THE INDIE ROYALE?!

fuckING SPACE ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now back to old rehashed old stuff that needs not be brought back up, but my god if it isn't my duty to do it!
I'm serious solely due to not having enough room on my shelf for my CDs, HDDVDs/BDs, and games. Since I have most of the games a second time on steam that's taken a backseat and has less room.
I've learned that if you are not going to play it and don't have the room out in the open, its time to invest in some nice boxes, lol.
I second this. And the one true web browser is Lynx.

Agreed and it's not funny, its CRAZY!! But seriously, ya, its pretty common to still use both for, well, alot still.
I would smother kittens with ice cream if I could. And you already know how I feel about jay's on guy.

11 Bundles sold...

How many you think they get to?

Well its up to 90 now!
I have been gone for a few pages because of the move but I a finally caught back up.... not as though much has happened haha

I just wanted to post this link for Castle Story again as a quick reminder to those who have not seen this Kickstarter. It is ending in a few days and it looks AMAZING. I do not recall who but someone posted this a while back when it began and I instantly wanted to give them my money hahah
Don't worry, I've been gone longer! Also, I had missed Castle Story, but oh well.
My entire gaming rig cost less than your card :(
And mine probably cost less than yours!!
For half the price of that laptop you can build a pretty substantial desktop that will be upgradeable for the future. With half of the other half of the money you can buy a solid laptop that can play plenty of good games on the go. Then you can put the rest of that money away for games/upgrades.
I just felt like this point needed another bump; too many people waste money on "gaming laptops" and electronics in general... People need to learn to shop and think better before they buy.
I've never heard of them, and one of the reasons I'm probably going with Alienware is because I only hear good things about them (especially from a tech wiz friend of mine), and I think they offer pretty good support. They're expensive, but they're supposed to be quality machines. I hear good about Asus too, so I'm not totally set on AW.

My question was what VIDEO CARD would be good in an Alienware M18, not what other brand I should buy instead. >.>

He didn't recommend them due to price. He's been a tech for PCs as well as worked for Apple, and he has both Apples and PCs. He swears by Apples, just for OS reasons, but if he had to choose any PC to have, he'd go with an Alienware for quality (not price).
I know its already been said, but I have to say it myself. Your friend is not a "tech wiz", I'm sorry to say. And I'm surprised you claim he acknowledges the high price but is an Apple fan? You know what, nevermind, I'm not going to start that debate... Anyways, if you hate Dell so much, then why are you fighting everyone in favor of Alienware so badly? And Stop whining about how you asked for Video Card advice and got more; I'm sorry if people are just trying to help a fellow CAG out and insure he ends up with something awesome.
I've hated Alienware for as long as I can remember. Long before they were bought by Dell. Don't get one. Your friend is not a "tech wiz." He's also not a genius. What's next, he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express?

Get something like a $1000 Asus Republic of Gamers laptop. They've been on Warehouse Deals recently for under $1k.
:applause: & :applause:
I tried the gaming laptop route once, utter failure. Just a bad machine that got lemoned out, but for the amount I spent I said never again.
I've rarely found anyone who's ended up getting a gaming laptop and HASN'T hated they got it within a few months of having one.
Keeping your battery plugged in all the time kills it. So if you spend a lot of time plugged into the wall either take out your battery or unplug on occasion to let it drain and recharge. I spent about a yea with a laptop always plugged in and battery in and after that the battery held like 25 to 50% of the original charge.
I actually wanted to get this here because I noticed no one brought it up. Not saying anything by this, but you are KINDA wrong. It really depends on what type of battery is in the laptop. What you are saying is 100% true for NiMH; but its a bit different for newer lithium batteries. Basically, for older laptops/batteries its better to let them drain down before charging but for newer its better to not drop below either 1/4 or 1/2, I don't remember. I wish I could find an old page about this stuff to post, it really laid out everything about the different types of batteries very well.
It took like... five minutes for that image to completely load.
Looks like someone needs that new Alienware faster  (or just a better interwebz)
I'm totally interested in the Be Mine 4 bundle because of Zero Gear. I currently don't have a good "kart racer" on the PC, and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing probably won't be on sale again for a while. (NOTE: I am aware that I'd also be getting a code for Revelations 2012. I accept this as a consequence.)

Have any CAG's tried Zero Gear?
Check the video settings for the awesome "indie" slider ;)

Aw fuck, this would be awesome!! I think I'll but it and take this great setup...but wait! I only have $147,167.64!!! Could a generous CAG spot me a penny? Trust me, I'm good for it!
I was trying to look up an old slang term to use for a penny, found this site, laughed my ass off confused as hell by the inclusion of the 2nd to last US term
This was posted over in the Groupee thread. Watch this and tell me if you still think it looks good. I got a laugh out of it at least.

I haven't gotten around to subject myself to the game yet, but I seriously thought the talking was just stupid mic chat from idiot players....but no, I was so wrong and I just don't know how I feel about the world now....

Since I was the one insistent on getting a gaming laptop, I'll say again that I need one for lifestyle reasons. I am not going to be staying in one place, and I need something that I can pick up and move on a consistent basis. Yes, it means I'm going to pay another $1000 or so to have that mobility, but it's a necessity for me.

I'm not sure why that's such a hard concept to grasp, really.

Everyone bashes Alienware, yet about 99% of those people bashing Alienware have never owned an Alienware. Yes, they are very expensive, and not quite as well made as they were when Origin made them. That said, they are still of very high quality, and come with Dell support, which is the best around. For example, the biggest qualm I read in a recent Alienware review was that the keyboard flexed a tiny bit in a certain spot if you pressed down hard. Not exactly a dooming trait.

In the end, I've probably decided against them anyways. Clevo seems to be of as high or higher quality in some areas than Alienware, and they are a good bit cheaper (i.e. $2000 vs. $2500). Alienwares are very high quality computers, but expensive. That's where the blind negativity comes from.
Anyways, if you hate Dell so much, then why are you fighting everyone in favor of Alienware so badly? And Stop whining about how you asked for Video Card advice and got more; I'm sorry if people are just trying to help a fellow CAG out and insure he ends up with something awesome.
I hate cheap Dell computers that are frankensteined together and start falling apart after a year or two. The reason Dells are often so cheap is because they are not smartly built, and while they be fine for awhile out of the box, you start seeing the problems later on. The same isn't true of Alienwares.

Dell support is amazing though. Dell has its good points; I just hate their low end stuff, because that's all I've used from them.

And yes, trying to calm the clusterfuck of differing opinions and people throwing in "wtf this is off topic" every page or so was me "whining". Thank you for the brilliant observation.
And finally....WHY HAS NO ONE MENTIONED THE SPECIAL REWARDS FOR THE INDIE ROYALE?!

fuckING SPACE ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Presumably because no CAG is going to be in the "top contributor" running for a space rock. ;)

* I'm oh so very glad all the random Asian videos just so happened to end up posted on page 69

And finally....WHY HAS NO ONE MENTIONED THE SPECIAL REWARDS FOR THE INDIE ROYALE?!
Isn't the Guns of Icarus Online only beta? I don't think you'll get the full game.
Presumably because no CAG is going to be in the "top contributor" running for a space rock. ;)
Or because we are already familiar with the global meteorite trade and its impact on science.
Isn't the Guns of Icarus Online only beta? I don't think you'll get the full game.
Yeah, it's only the beta. The mystery game MIGHT be the full game though, so it's a possibility.

Just a heads up that you can pay the extra $4 to BTA AFTER the mystery game is unveiled though. You don't have to do it now, so the smartest thing to do is wait and see.

(There's been rumors of the mystery game being Postal 3 as well.)

Just a heads up to those who might be interested in one of the Paradox packs that Amazon is selling. They have the Plethora of Paradox pack which is supposed to be $11.54, but is instead incorrectly listed as $9.51. They will undoubtedly change it in time, so grab it now if you were considering the purchase.

It's worth noting that there are two other paradox packs which, when combined, give you everything in the Plethora Of Paradox plus the two Sword of the Stars games. Those two packs would run you a combined $17.05. So if the two Sword of the Stars games are worth an extra $7.54, you might wanna consider getting both of them instead of the Plethora of Paradox pack.

Nice! I guess the prices were switched accidentally. Bought for future giveaways on steamgifts

LOL yup. I was like hmmm must of been free keys or very very cheap keys for this game for it to all of sudden to appear on here like this.

Thank you, I'm really considering this! I just have 2 questions:

Do these packs give you individual codes for each game and add-on?
and all of this activates on steam (just making sure)?
