Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

One can hope, unless they want to make it DRM free. I will also like that too.
Did anyone else get a random copy of Starvoid in their inventory?
The game is dead/dying. Seems like a giveaway to rejuvenate the player base.

I got the game for free as it is.
Where are all these Sword and Soldiers keys coming from on Steamgifts?
Wasn't it just released as a bonus to Humbdroid Bundle?

Hm. Jet Set Radio is tempting at that price, though if I wanted to play it, my Dreamcast is connected to my TV right now. Any reason I should play the Steam version rather than the original? I don't even have an HD monitor yet, though I suppose I could output to my TV.

Also, I did get a copy of Starvoid in my inventory as well.

What res is your monitor? HD is simply a marketing gimmick term, monitors have been "HD" long before tvs where. I still remember back in 98 gaming at 1600x1200
Humble Bundle for Android 4 bonus
That explains it, didn't know that was the bonus, was able to claim my key :D
I got it too.

I've got it from Alienware arena promo. They gave away some beta keys, which apparently turned into retail one. As it's only multiplayer game I think it's the way to gather some more playerbase.

btw. 5th episode of the Walking Dead will be released next wednesday.
Darn I wish that I had been able to grab a beta key for starvoid now. I would have liked to give the game a shot as it looks interesting. If anyone has a extra copy and does not want it if you send it my way I would greatly appreciate it.

Don't know if it's been mentioned. But Greenmangaming Crusader Kings II and it's dlc on sale for cheap. They also have the newly released dlc for $2 cheaper than what steams offering. This is ofc ourse before the promo code. A good deal if your looking to pick of some dlc or just grab the lot.
So if anyone is interested in Epic Mickey 2, Amazon is selling the PC version as a preorder for $30. I have no clue what type of DRM it has but it's half off the PS3/360/Wii-U versions. I decided to take the plunge.

Didn't even know there was going to be a PC version.

Yeah, I tried for Zen first and it was already gone.

People on other forums hide them under tags, so you have to be a member. Seems like a better way to hand out codes to the community if that's what you prefer.

Just for the record, you would get a picture of a note saying "I fucked you're mother" [sic] if you asked for that from me.

Nothing personal of course, you create a scenario of delayed waiting for a picture, I have to troll.

1680x1050.

There are also the controls to consider. It's possible I may simply prefer playing JSR with the DC controller as I did originally.

But then, I also like supporting games I like, even if at a deep discount. Or especially, rather.

Decisions, decisions...

I'm debating Jet Set Radio, as well. I have my original $2 credit for signing up and buying a game on GMG, which would make the price even better. Still, I may hold out and save that credit for another time.

Since I always like to throw this in, I'd like to reiterate how disappointed I am in SEGA for not releasing their PC ports of Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia. From what I understand, we came quite close to releases for those games before they were put aside.

I hope that one day, SEGA takes those ports out of the vault and places them on Steam.

even opening up a random chat with a friend does not remove the notification

the problem is this
it has come to my attention that these red notifications were actually convos.. but they do not appear.

any suggestions?

sorry to anyone that tried to chat but i did not reply! steam did not allow me to see your convo
I had to introduce a poor gamer to Steam today. I hope things go well for him.

I was at best buy doing trade ins to get some Steam and Amazon cards and this guy, looked to be probably in his 40s, came up to the gamer counter holding a copy of Civ 5 and was asking the kid behind the counter if it would work with Windows 8. The employees there are pretty clueless when it comes to PC games, so I stepped in. Apparently the guy had just upgraded to Windows 8 and his copy of Civ IV stopped working and he couldn't find a way to fix it so he decided to just upgrade to Civ 5.

I'm not sure how computer literate he was, but he was worried about Civ 5 having the latest patches. Explained to him it was steamworks and Steam would update with the latest patches, including the latest one that added some Windows 8 stuff. Was shocked he had no clue what Steam was. I asked him if he knew what Valve was or Half Life and he had no clue about that either. So I'm not sure how much of a gamer he was, but I told him it would be patched by Steam and he should be able to get it to run.

Hurt a little to see him pay $30 for a vanilla copy, but didn't want to offend the employees by telling him he could find it a lot cheaper online. Maybe once he installs steam and sees the store he will become a convert.

I was a bit confused too since I have yet to have too many compatibility issues with 7 or 8, but the guy was pretty adamant he had "tried everything" so I didn't push the issue or go into too much detail. Initially I thought he might be pretty game savvy, but then realized he must just like the one game. Seemed like the type to just want to go pick up the game he wants, have it work with minimal effort, and then be on his way.
Granted, I don't have Win 8...
...but it's so similar to Win 7 (from what I seen and heard) - other than the Modern UI (Metro UI).

You'd figure, if it works on Win 7, it's probably got a good shot at working on Win 8.
I ain't got problems w/ Civ 4 going on Win 7, so... [shrug]

EDIT:
Also, who'd spend $30 on Civ 5?
Amazon DVG had it ultra-cheap during BSO 2011 Sale in Jan 2012 - like $4 cheap, after that $5 off coupon.

Civ 5 actually has a "Windows 8" mode geared towards touch interfaces. I don't have a touch interface so I can't comment on the effectiveness but it certainly gives the option to start that mode.

Okay, so I've spent like 2 hours playing Yeti Hunter today, and after those 2 hours I'm left begging the question "wtf?". Yeah, I get it's free, and seems pretty low-key, but holy crap the potential that this game has is incredible. Maybe it's just me, but this game hits all of the main points of what makes a great thriller/suspense game. It has the atmosphere, it has the edginess, but I do have a couple of big complaints with it.

Review, I guess:

First of all, the game is about hunting Yeti, Yeti being kinda "mysterious" by themselves, which kinda adds to the game's thrill. Having said that, the game is completely focused entirely on that (hunting Yeti), which would be fine if the assumed outcome were to be do-able (killing/shooting a Yeti). Yeah, you're given a gun, yes you can shoot said gun while scoped, but where the fail comes from is trying to put that gun to its intended use.

When you do find a Yeti, and you scope to shoot it, it just disappears instead of letting you shoot it like a normal game... = super annoying.

Yes, I'm complaining about a free game, and yes, I do have 1750+ games I COULD be playing in place of it; I don't know what's wrong with me. But this game has potential, and a lot of it (well, the premise at least).

One thing it does great is with atmosphere. From what I gather, you wake up, apparently attacked, in an open alpine forest-like place. You're surrounded by open fields covered with snow, snow "falling", a fair amount of trees and shrubs, listening to atmospheric music. You walk around and find what I thought were Yeti footprints (which is how I seen them), which turn out to be "arrows" with the single indicating the tip of the arrow.

You're supposed to head in the general direction of the "arrows" to track the Yeti. You may see one, or one of many human-looking piles of snow. I found myself lost many times because you have nothing but the trees and shrubs (and "arrows" if they happen to be around) to give you a sense of direction, but they all look the same for the most part, being a budget game. If you happen to lose your sense of direction, climbing a tree may be of assistance (but wasn't really helpful for me most of the time). Other than that, you're on your own to use the "arrows" to track down Yeti. You find one, you scope, it disappears. If you don't scope, you can follow it for a couple of seconds after which it goes out of your field of vision since it moves in bursts instead of at a steady pace.

Another thing it does right is the thrill. You start the game in daylight with what I'd call mysterious music playing, but about 4 minutes later (and continues to alternate in 4-minute intervals) it instantly turns to darkness (halving your field of view) and horror music starts playing. At first, I quickly climbed up the nearest tree I could find and peered down at the ground around me in fear. After realizing that the Yeti pose no threat at all (at least from what I experienced), I "nutted" up and began hunting Yeti at nighttime as well (this took me about 1 hour of playing to gather the courage to do so ;)). However, at first playthrough, I was really drawn in by the game and definitely wanted to play more.

In the end, I would recommend at least playing the game for 10 minutes, at least. While there is no clear end to the game, at least from what I experienced, the game does what it does do very well. Plus, it's free here (discovered it through the current IndieGameStand deal, which includes it if you BTA; again, it's free from this site). ;)

So why the hell did I write this for some game I downloaded for free and will never play again? I have no fucking idea. =]

TL;DR: Yeti Hunter is what I would call a casual game that does 2 things very well: atmosphere and thrill. Get it here. ;)
