Which Xbox 360 is right for me?

So I have my tax refund and for once I am considering splurging (I am usually so damn practical).

I have never owned an Xbox or PS2....I've been quite happy with my Cube. I know I want a Wii, but I am tempted to also get a 360 to try different kinds of games.

That being said, I am not a fan of sports games of first person shooters (I'm just not a sports fanatic and shooters tend to make me ill to my stomach--literally). So, it would be for high quality graphic adventure/action/RPG and such games.

I also *don't* see myself playing online....I am a very casual gamer, and would never be experienced enough to enjoy going online (I go online with MarioKart DS every now and then and always get my ass handed to me....). I also only play for an hour here or there...

SO...my question. Which version Xbox 360 should I get? I know the higher end bundle is a better value versus buying the pieces separately, BUT....do I need the peripherals? I don't see myself ever using a headset (I'm not a trash talking kind of guy) and do I need a hard drive if I am not spending time online? I really am not sure what the hard drive adds.... I have one large capacity memory card that has been more than enough for me with the Cube....

Advice is appreciated!!!

Thanks

Honestly, at this point there's no reason not to get the Premium bundle. When they were scarce and it was difficult to find a 360 at all then it was worth it to get a Core if that's all you could find but not anymore. The reason being the storage. If you buy the Core you have to buy a $40 memory card at the very least so in reality, the Premium is only $60 more than the core system and it has the HDD. Buying a core and the HDD is $400 anyway so you might as well get the extra junk, even if your not gonna use it and EBay it or trade it to Gamestop.

Well, the only good RPG is oblivion. Is that one game alone enough to warrant a purchase of the 360? You should probably wait until the 360 gets more of the types of games you want. Not only that, but it could be cheaper by that time.

I can't imagine not wanting Live though, especially since at least 60% of the online community sucks..no reason to fear ass-kickings.

Not only that but those can be found for pretty cheap. Oh and there's also Kameo.

As mentioned, the real price difference is only $60. Having that hard drive gives you access to many Xbox titles and the growing Xbox Live Aracde assortment. Plus being able to download playable demos of games is a an excellent value enhancement by having the drive. It used to be only PC games offered this widely. Free demo discs for console game were comparitively rare.

So for the extra $60 you get access to many and increasing great Xbox games, playable demos that let you more informed purchasing decisions, the ability to purchase additional game content, HD movie/game trailers and other HD content. The value is definitely there without multiplayer being an attraction.

I have little interest in online multiplayer but I'd definitely want access to the free Xbox Live Silver material, and that is severely constrained by the capacity of the memory unit.

I don't even care much about having a wireless controller. If there was an option to get the hard drive but not the wireless controller for a lower price, I'd go for that. But with an effective difference in price of only $60 plus tax I'm not to going complain a lot about having wireless forced on me.

Premium, NO MATTER WHAT. As said above. the extras 60 (from purchase of mem card) Will searve you for everything. No HD = barly any 360 experience, listening to music whenever you want, DOWNLOADING in xblArcade, and extra content.

TRU has 360, extra wireless controller, COD2 for 450, seems like a good deal to me.

And also, get the warenty (extra 60, but worth it)

I don't understand people who say something like "I don't really like any of the games currently out for the 360, but I'm considering buying one".

Not trying to bash anyone, just curious as to why people would want a system that doesn't offer them the types of games they prefer.

The premium pack is the only one to buy. You will be happy you made that decision after you get it and see what the difference is. You will want to download all the freebees (demos, trailers, ect.) even if you don't play on live and you will need a hard drive for that. And if you do want to play the old xbox games, you will have to have it to run the emulators. You will also love the wireless controler. No messy wires, you can turn the xbox on and off from anywhere and you don't have to be 6 ft from your console.

And if price is your biggest draw back, just keep your eyes open. The premium system was just 350 at dell 2 days ago and I have seen it on sale at several other sites as well. It is worth 400, but if you have the patience to skip the PS2 and xbox, you may be able to find another good deal.

It depends, I think.

If you would like to utilize the XBLA feeatures and be able to download demos (which would be great if you want to try out different types of games), plus have pretty much unlimited game saves and custom soundtracks, then you want to get the hard drive. Since the hard drive is $100 alone, and the 360 Core is $300, you might ass well get the Premium since it's the same price and it includes more things.

Even if you don't want the headset, you can try it to someone or sell it on eBay. You will probably find someone who can use it.

So, in my opinion, this decision depends on if you want the hard drive or not. If you want it, I'd say definitely go with the Premium. If not, than it's up to whether you want the wireless (included in the Premium) or the wired (in the core) controller.

I would recommend getting the Premium no matter what, but if you don't want the hard drive, and don't need a wireless controller, you can save $60 by getting the core.

EDIT: w00t for this being my 700th post!

I'm surprised you all actually reinforced his idea to get a 360. He said he's not a fan of shooters. Xbox is the console of shooters. I love my 360. But I also love shooters.

The only adventure/RPG games that I can really think of that are coming out for the 360 that are going to worth any amount of time are like Mass Effect, Too Human, Oblivion, Marvel Alliance, and maybe a couple others (Saint's Row MAYBE, I'm frankly sick of GTA-type games).

I have a feeling that if the OP went out and spent $500 to get a 360 and a game and/or controller, he'd be unhappy with it within a few months and want to get rid of it I mean, he even said he doesn't like playing online. For me, a huge reason for liking my 360 is online play and the marketplace.

I say don't get one yet and just wait until there are actual games that you want to play instead of buying one and then hoping the games come out.

Get the Premium.

And Condemned, Table Tennis, Oblivion, and Geometry Wars make the system very worthwhile. I'd also say that the downloadable demos are very nice.

There's a question I dunno if anyone asked, but are you using a HDTV to play it? If you are, getting the core makes little to no sense at this point, because not only do you have to dole out an extra $40 for a memory card, but if you want to play the 360 in HD you'll have to pony up even more dough ($20-30) to get a decent set of component cables to use with it.

**Shameless Plug**

If you decide to get the core, I have a brandnew HDD for $60 shipped w/tracking.

But being a new owner of a 360, I would have to say that the Premium is the best bet. It is $420(cause you know you will rather buy a Play N Charge kit than kill AA batteries). Do you get sick from 3RD Person Shooters? If not, I just finished the singleplayer of Ghost Recon Advance Warfighter. That is pretty sweet. The HDD adds cool things like custom tracks and other multimedia features like hooking up to your PC and viewing pictures and audio. If you have Windows Media Center it will do movies too. Porn never looked better than on my TV. I mean, family photos.

Wow!

Thanks for all of the detailed responses. I love the people at this site!

It sounds like if I am going for the 360, then the premium system is the way to go all the way. I hadn't realized there was a difference of wireless versus wired controllers...and while I wouldn't see myself playing others online (truest me-I had thought I was *ok* at Mario Kart until I went online and found myself coming in last every time), I would like to download demos.

I'm a little hesitant only because of the type of games...I really do love games like Zelda and Mario and Animal Crossing (hence the Cube)...but at the same time I feel an urge to branch out. The PS3 would have been my choice (I've been curious to try Kingdom Hearts)--but not at that pricing! And 360 Viva Pinata game looks fun!

I appreciate all the advice.

Thank you!!!!

Dan

EDIT: Sorry I did not see the related post that someone directed me to....I had checked but somehow missed that :) I do have HD, not that it matters much to me :)
