This thread will maintain a list of all current and upcoming sales and markdowns on the Xbox Live Marketplace / Xbox Games Store for the USA.  YMMV in other regions.  If non-US sales are listed, they will be marked with their applicable region(s).

Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.  This requires being a paid subscriber or within a console-activated "1 month complimentary Gold trial" account.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.
  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

I can confirm that this can be bought without an Xbox One as I don't own one and just purchased it through the website in case I ever do. Hope that's the same with future GwG games on the XBone as I estimate I won't be even thinking of grabbing a new system for at least another 4 years (really need to make a dent in the games I currently have and then move to a PS3 for PS3 exclusives . . . FML!)

EDIT: Weirdly it isn't showing up in my purchase history though but it does show on the Xbox Store page that I purchased it on a certain date.

EDIT 2: Nevermind - as someone else stated it's basically gone the Free-to-play/Demo model - damn you Microsoft! At least this will make it interesting as to what will be the first few GwG for the XBone as it looks like Powerstar Golf is unlikely

It's a basically a demo now. 1 course and a character is $6, everything is $20. Pretty much made it a pay to play game now. MS trolled us pretty good. I thought it was the full game until a couple CAG's pointed it out in the other thread.

Isn't that how GwG game show up? I am pretty sure they do not show up in your purchase history. Maybe MS is doing a surprise Xbox One game before June like they did with Fable 3 for the 360.

Edit: Nevermind I guess.

But last time SCV was on sale, it was just $3.74. How cheap are you? ;)

Sure, it's not so good if you are playing solo but it's pretty good if you play online and the netcode is probably one of the best for fighting games in the last couple of years.
Yeah, it was more the overall experience. I played SC and SC2 a lot so I was expecting the whole package with SCV because past iterations had such awesome extra content through the campaigns.

A while ago, I read someone speculate rather reasonably on the reason why Microsoft didn't adopt the more straightforward naming convention for their consoles (i.e., Xbox, Xbox 2, Xbox 3, etc). If they had, on any given console generation, they would be competing against a higher-numbered PlayStation console (currently, the Xbox 3 vs. the PlayStation 4). My guess is Microsoft's marketing department thought the average consumer might perceive Microsoft's offering as inferior.

Interestingly, many believed Sony wouldn't stick to their naming convention for this console generation because of Japan's well-documented tetraphobia (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraphobia).

"Minecraft: Xbox One Edition is coming to the Xbox Live Marketplace this August – and if you’re a current “Minecraft” enthusiast, it’s only going to cost you a mere $4.99*!

*Users must own the retail version (disc or digital) of “Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition” in order to receive the upgrade price of $4.99 for “Minecraft: Xbox One Edition.”"
That's awesome. Hopefully the DLC stuff will carry over or have an upgrade at a discount too.

Says you have a year to do it too. Going to dump the disc at Target today for over MSRP if the price holds up until later and then just watch for a deal on it.

"You can just keep going, right where you left off! That goes for most (but not all) of your downloadable skins and texture packs, though not all of them will make the jump."

Great to hear, I'll definitely upgrade for $5.

Seriously, guys, what is going on? No more Kinect? Cheaper console? External HDD support with no size limit? Free games? Crazy discounts? Tons of announcements?

IT'S NOT EVEN E3

MS really wants to win E3 before it even starts.
Not that I'm complaining, plus it also makes me extremely curious about MS's showcase if they can afford to have all these impressive announcements already. These weeks are really about Xbox, frankly there's barely any major news on the other consoles.

Right on point. I'm hoping that all of this isn't just MS applying some balm before blowing it up at E3, they should know that so many anouncements before E3 is going to get the people wanting something even better.

Maybe it's just that they're going to spend the whole show talking about TV again and realize that if they don't talk about games at some point the internet will destroy them again.

Not to rumble the apple cart in the XBL deals thread, but Nintendo has been releasing interesting info leading up to E3 but still has enough mystery surrounding those tidbits of info. Like during the investor meeting last month, they announced titles like Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros., Hyrule Warriors, Yarn Yoshi and Monolith's game titled X coming to Japan this year which means a US release for these gamers are quite soon. Even the Wii Sports U games like Boxing & Baseball are coming out in Japan July 26, so a US release date is prepped for an E3 announcement. Plus, the whole Nintendo RFP thing will be fully revealed at E3 since it was just announced.

Truth be told, I haven't heard any rumblings in the Sony camp since I've never owned one of their consoles. So not looking for any news on that front. But this E3 looks to be the biggest one in quite a while. Can't wait!!!!

Those things, however, are just confirmations. We knew and saw all those games already. MS slashed the price and the Kinect. Games With Gold on X1, with an extra free game in June for both consoles. The Minecraft update program. External HDD support with no size limit. Powerstar Golf goes "free" (not technically a f2p game but pretty much). New Halo. Gameplay for Sunset Overdrive. Rumored Halo HD collection. I don't know, it's all pretty new and I'm really excited about the Xbox brand's future. Sony and Nintendo didn't really do make me change my mind on them or make me more curious than I was, though obviously they will have their big news at E3, no doubt. But I'm getting the feeling that MS is going to blow things up hard here.

True. I believe that MS will have a few things up their sleeves, but all these NEW reveals are purposefully done now so MS can thump their chest come E3. Nintendo......they're in their own world so I'm not gonna get into that. Just know that they're having a "digital event" instead of a press conference.

K, I'm done talking about Nintendo. Going over to my backlog to work on game #164 now

Wow, I can't believe that.

Microsoft must have some bombs to drop, for them to announce Halo 5 on some random day right before E3 like it's no big deal.
I'm really starting to think that it is going to be more of the same and just showing off the stuff we already know about. They just get all the headlines and excitement now and maybe more people will pay attention at E3.

That or they're going to make out Xbones explode from excitement.

I wonder how the Minecraft upgrade price would work for people with the disc version. Digital is no problem, can simply check the account's download history. But disc? Will the 360 disc need to be placed in the XB1 system to confirm ownership? Will having game saves be enough? (Meaning people that sold their disc could get the upgrade price without owning the disc.) Curious minds want to know.

Microsoft always comes out on top at the end, don't know how this is surprising
When, and in what way? Certainly wasn't that way 2 generations ago (PS2 / Xbox / GC), and there are various ways to proclaim a winner for the 360 / PS3 / Wii generation.

I started playing Saints Row the Third today and... I've got to say that they have a real mess going on with THQ accounts (it doesn't recognize your password), and for what I've read through the net, this problem dates from some time ago. Emailed Deepsilver, and now... cross fingers and wait.

You guys are cool. Nobody in the PSN thread likes Bosman.

Though I'm more partial to The Last Levelle, myself.
That's surprising. He always gives plenty of love to the PS4, and always make fun of MS.

The Halo 5 info was a leak, not an announcement. Frank O'Connor of 343 had an interview talking about how disappointed he was about it.

That will be interesting. The PS4/3 does things like this by the unique ID of the BR disc but don't know how they're going to swing it with the DVDs.

I don't think the PS3 disc upgrades to PS4 yet. They said they are working on it. For Xbox 360 disc to Xbox One, they said you just have to play online with the disc. So maybe once it is on your gamertag, you are good to go. Probably will be the same with PS3 to PS4 after they talk things through with Sony. Redbox better make sure to have plenty of Minecraft copies if they want to see a large increase in rentals.

Still, everybody knows the next Sony console will be the PS5 while nobody has a clue of the name of the next iteration of xbox. I can't express it properly but that only counts against Microsoft game brand. It gives the idea of non-related products, like they were diminishing the current one in favor of the newer (remember last E3 Mattrick statement: "Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called xbox 360"). While Sony is perceived as a company with a goal in mind, like they were progressing building on solid grounds and following a path to develop their product. Somehow it gives safety. And that's only for using a logical way to denote the brand iterations.
I think the reasoning I read about the Xbox 360 not being called Xbox 2 was when compared to the PS3 it would sound inferior. Like 3 > 2 numerically so naturally people would assume the PS3 was better. That's more about how stupid/uneducated the average consumer is.

Also, I spell it as XB1 and 360. 3 letters is where it's at!

I think you're right that was the issue. Which makes it even more funny that it's PS4 vs. XB1 now.

Wow, I can't believe that.
What's not to believe? Last year Nintendo didn't even have a press conference. They had some booths to demo/play games and that was it. Well, they also ran a Direct that day but it was lackluster. The "general consensus" is that Sony "won" E3 last year as 1)Nintendo conceded to the giants that are Sony and Microsoft by barely showing up that week 2)MS talked about Sports, Kinect 2.0, TV, a game, sports, kinect 2.0, TV, sports and one more game and 3) Sony's press conference basically bitch slapped MS in the face by countering everything the X1 was going to do(at the time eg. always online, used games at full price, kinect camera always on, etc) by saying the PS4 was for gamers and gave prime examples of why it was.

Nintendo continues to follow the beat of their own drum and that worked for the generation that was the Wii, but the same strategies they had in 2006 they're using now and that ain't gonna fly in 2014 and beyond. They're attempting to change that, but Iwata's job(CEO) is on the line right now and I truly believe E3 is going to make or break the Wii U as a console.

That said, the PS4 and X1 truly look like they have bright futures ahead and I am still "possibly," considering getting an Xbone down the line. This massive backlog though says 2016 at the earliest

I also remember reading that line from a MS rep. That was right after they anounced the name of the Xbox One

I didn't mean about Minecraft in specific but rather there's a unique ID imbedded in BR discs so they use that for on disc cross buy for example or require having the disc in for the launch upgrades.

All this XBox news is very exciting....I will be taking the Minecraft challenge for a Lincoln fo sho. As to names in hindsight I like SpartanBox.

When companies think they're the frontrunner, they can get cocky and stumble. Sony got away with it once with the PS2. I'm sure they influenced Square to release Final Fantasy 8 in the US on the same day as the Dreamcast, and got the hype train rolling for the PS2 to really hurt the Dreamcast. Then they got bit the next time around (RIDGE RACER! Giant crab! $100 more expensive), then spent most of the next gen playing catch up, and thanks to Japan pretty much ignoring the 360, have almost caught up for 2nd place in system sales. Microsoft viewed themselves as the frontrunner this time around and tried to force stuff on gamers they didn't want. Sony was all too happy to swoop in showing themselves as the cheaper, "game sharing is good and simple" alternative. During E3 last year, after the XB1's price reveal, I e-mailed some friends and asked, "Think Sony has the balls to just announce a price $100 lower as a keynote like they did with the PS1 vs. Saturn?" None of them thought they'd do that, and while they didn't, they were a bit shocked by the $100 price difference. Another gen or two, and it'll probably cycle back the other way again, or Nintendo could become a force again. As said, Nintendo's been following the beat of their own drum pretty much since the N64 days, riding their IPs and handhelds (not too dissimilar from Microsoft covering the Xbox division's losses with Windows and Office money until they could leverage XBL to profitability), and until recently when they actually started showing corporate losses, they seemed content with that. With the profits gone, next year should be interesting for them (Mario Kart, Smash and the upcoming Pokemon remakes may be enough to bolster them into profitability for this year).
