This thread will maintain a list of all current and upcoming sales and markdowns on the Xbox Live Marketplace / Xbox Games Store for the USA.  YMMV in other regions.  If non-US sales are listed, they will be marked with their applicable region(s).

Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.  This requires being a paid subscriber or within a console-activated "1 month complimentary Gold trial" account.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.
  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

I used to be a massive Epic fan, given I always loved Unreal games and ADORED Unreal Tournament games. Spent countless years on those, between playing online, LANs at school, having friends over for local fun to winning small tournaments with actual prizes... yeah, big stuff. Gears Of War felt nowhere near as polished, competitive or generally well done compared to the UT games, despite being different genres obviously. When GOW came out, it looked like a straight-forward, linear and generally unoriginal experience with tons of testosterone and eye-candy, albeit I gotta admit, at the time I was not impressed by UE3's heavy reliance on shaders, as UE2 (with UT2004 especially) managed to create absolutely beautiful and extremely varied sceneries, whereas GOW was a brown-fest all along. Of course I only played a couple levels at a friend's house, so I did not have the proper insight on the game, but it was a giant step backwards for Epic as far as I was concerned. The game also gets credit for pretty much inventing modern TPS games, but it only popularized what Kill Switch and other games made before it, whereas the UT games were absolutely unique - not quite the only arena shooters around (see Quake 3 Arena), but there was nothing coming close to UT in terms of style and quality, Quake always had a different style. Having played GOW1 again thanks to GwG made me remember all the issues I had with the game: it's just not that smooth, and for a fast-paced gamer like me spending 99% of your time behind cover (especially on higher difficulties) totally is not my thing. And I still kinda hate Epic for making GOW pretty much their only cashcow: GOW1 came out in 2006. We had 1 Unreal Tournament games since, in 2007. 0 Unreal games. 0 new engines released, as opposed to the time between UE1 and UE2, and also UE2 and UE3. 0 Jazz Jackrabbit games (call me old school). Couple mobile games. But we had 4 GOW games, with the 5th coming up. Tons of DLC, comics, all kinds of merchandising, all while completely forgetting what made them famous - the Unreal saga and PC gaming, for example, got completely ignored, while a supposed Unreal 3, a new UT and stuff they occasionally teased simply vanished into thin air, ignoring the fans that were waiting for those because GOW was giving them more than enough money.

Tl;dr, just a lenghty explanation why, for me, GOW sits in the backlog.
The new Gears isn't an Epic game at all. It's 100% microsoft's now, where as the last/worst one Judgement was about 50/50.

Epic put out UT3 during the 3 game Gears run and also put out other quality games like Shadow Complex, Bulletstorm and the infinity blade series. In 5 years that's pretty impressive. Your post makes the Gears series out to be Assassins Creed or Guitar Hero. Also, Unreal engine 4 just came out man. (Literally last week)

The Unreal Series needed a break. I believe Epic put out 4 or 5 UT and UC games over a 6 year span. I don't think you can blame Gears for them feeling a little burnt out after that. They did the same thing with Gears now, it's just their thing.

The only bad thing about Crackdown is the driving. If you thought GTA IV's driving was bad, Crackdown's driving is even worse, though you don't necessarily need to drive unless you want to level up that specific ability.
That's interesting as that's a majority of what I did so my car was pimped out and I stuck to the road almost constantly. True though you can just jump around from rooftop to rooftop so no need.

Serious question, can you not take cover in Mass Effect 1 or am I doing something wrong? I'm not too far in but I cannot figure out if there's a way to take cover or just derp around behind walls/rocks when my squad are in cover.

It was 2007 for the Halo 3 beta. It's old.
Yes you can take cover in Mass Effect 1, crouching next to a suitable space automatically does it.

Ah, you are right about Halo 3, my bad but yeah just because a game is old doesn't equal bad or crap.

Shadow Complex was mainly Chair Entertainment, Bulletstorm was mainly People Can Fly. I wouldn't be surprised an Unreal game shows up soon, they've got the new engine and all.

Backlog update: Just beat Prey.  It was a lot more fun than I was expecting. Not really that hard but some really interesting ideas going on.  Human Head Studios really seems like they have some big thinkers but just not able to put it all together.  Hopefully Arkane can do it justice.  Nothing like finishing a game from 2006 with the ending Prey will continue...and still no Prey 2.

Well you made valid points but i sincerely dont think gears franchise is a cashcow, furthermore their releases have been perfect timed as any worthy franchise should be, spreading three games from 2006 to 2011, giving time to build and consolidate a gaming community. A cashcow to me is CoD or assassin's creed, forcing a game or more per year.

What are your opinions/thoughts on Dragon's Dogma? Yay or Nay?
Yay! Hell yay! I bought it on sale thanks to recommendations of people here and can't be more grateful.

So, Microsoft is being stupid.

My 360 is located in Argentina. My Account is from US. I've got $10 credit on Microsoft account. Went store to purchase Halo: Wars with my credit and I can't cause of region lock. WTF? How can I bypass this? With a VPN? Sigh.

More or less on subject:  Anyone who has played RAAM's Shadow... is it worth a damn, really?  I skipped Gears 3 multiplayer for the most part...mainly because it felt like it was once again all about host advantage and shotguns.  As such, I never really did anything beyond beating the campaign and sorta forgot about the game.  Is playing as RAAM in a mini-campaign fun at all?

Oh....and to any fellow wrestling fans out there, The Ultimate Warrior passed away on Tuesday.

Its alright at best. It was a cool idea that was too short and not put together well.

If Bulletstorm is Epic, then Gears of War Judgment is also an Epic game since they're both from the same studio, which Epic owns. The same goes for Shadow Complex and Infinity Blade being Chair Entertainment games, both of which seem to be dead at this point. Epic's in an odd place right now with the mysterious Fortnite being the only thing they've announced in development.

I also finished it again not much ago, already beat it on PC back in the day but was a good run anyways. I always felt that Prey had the strongest campaign between the Doom 3/Quake 4/Prey trio, with all the portals, spirit walking and stuff. I still haven't got to the multiplayer cheevos, so if you still need to do those feel free to send me a friend request on Xbox Live (the GT is on my profile).

Well, Epic out-sourced a couple titles during the GOW cycle, but GOW was really the only serious thing they've done for a bit. The last episode was not developed by Epic, but I tink it further proves a point. They did have fairly many Unreal games before, albeit Unreal Championship is a direct port, the sequel was not developed by Epic, which leaves us with 2 Unreal and 3 Unreal Tournament games in almost 10 years. They've literally been teasing Unreal 3 forever, saying how it's going to be amazing on the new UE3 and stuff. It simply vanished, and at this point if it ever happens it'll be under UE4, likely marking it like 12-13 years from the previous installment. Same goes with Unreal Tournament 3: it came out the year of Halo 3 and Modern Warfare, so naturally they didn't quite win the FPS war, so for a bit they updated the PC version and see ya, they stopped caring about anything Unreal altogether. Every single UT game still has a very alive community, due to the fact they're extremely well balanced, fun, and basically timeless, and yet they preferred doing basically nothing but Gears for the past 8 years: everything else they released was actually developed by someone else or totally unrelevant such as mobile games. Obviously I'm bitter about UT in particular, but it's a shame overall, in the 90's and in early 00's Epic, along with id, Valve and other big guns of FPS gaming, spawned various masterpieces, so it was a brilliant time for gaming overall. Now Epic did nothing besides GOW in 8 years (besided outsourced stuff), Valve did not make a proper new game (their jump on the MOBA train aside) in like 4 years, while id is also taking their time after Doom 3 and Quake 4 came out, since those were like 10 years ago and we saw one id title (Rage) ever since. Shame, really, and given the fact I never really liked GOW, makes it so that it's been 7 years Epic actually developed something that I really liked, since they didn't do anything else since UT3. The upcoming Fortnite looks... okay, actually, although it does look like an attempt to mix many elements that are popular in today's gaming rather than making something truly new.

EPIC basically won the war of the engines for last generation. They didn't need to make games as a cashcow, their Unreal 2 and 3 engines being used in 50% (I'm making up that number but looking at my library of games it looks right) of AAA games basically allowed them the ability to do whatever they wanted and I think the plan was to create a deep franchise with a meaningful strut and gameplay. The original idea for GOW was a story on par with brothers at arms with deep engrossing gameplay - it just never happened and I think ultimately that's one of these reasons Cliff left the company as he wasn't too happy with where it went from a creative standpoint.

But I give EPIC credit for the games they did produce last gen as compared to the other old guard Game Engine companies they actually did produce games. Look at what Id Software got up to last gen. Just two games that weren't overly loved with Doom 3 and Rage. That and the Id Engines were barely used other than by a few games like Wolfenstein and Prey. Valve made a couple of Portal games, L4D and had some success with their engine but mostly they spent last gen building Steam. So I'd definitely be much more upset at the lack of great games out of those studios in years than what I would EPIC.

I do agree that the GOW games polarize gamers as you either love them or hate them. The sad thing is that a lot of more fluid multiplayer experiences like Brink just never really flourished last gen, which is probably half the reason there was all this hype behind Titanfall. I agree with Frisky that there were some annoyances with the overall flow of movement in GOW (the whole duck into cover to then vault is annoying and bothers me even more in Mass Effect). But there just weren't too many other 3rd person multiplayer shooters that worked as well as GOW and that caught on. It set a standard with GOW2 that was sadly never really improved upon last gen. I mean outside the Socom and Uncharted or Mass Effect 3 what other good 3rd person multiplayer shooters were there last gen (okay Monday Night Combat). Again Brink tried to bring a more fluid motion and combat (though in 1st person) into video games last gen, but it flopped in both execution and in maintaining a player base. Hopefully with the success of Titanfall in this gen we might see some of the stiffer mechanics of the last gen laid to rest even in whatever the next version of GOW might be. But still EPIC deserves praise for the series even if you don't like it. It really did define a generation of shooters.

Hitman Absolution is free right now even if you don't have a gold account.

If I'm not mistaken this may be the first time Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is on sale. If you like Metroid-vania type exploration games with amazing animation and style then it's an easy 3 bucks.

Is it too greedy to hope lots of non-Gold members download this, Microsoft sees it and therefore feels bad for Gold members, and us Gold members get an additional game for free? One can hope.
Not too greedy, but very foolish. You remember that Microsoft is owned by Microsoft right?

I completely agree. It's a shame that Shadow Hunters isn't included in the sale. I've been waiting for a discount.

Are you buying through the game itself or from the marketplace? You have to buy from within the game. It worked fine for me.
Be aware, the achievements for Episode 3 have not been published to xbox.com yet, so if you unlock them now they won't appear online until you recover your profile and unlock them again.

I'll take a stab. I beat Gears 1 and got about halfway through Gears 2 before I gave up out of boredom. I highly disagree that the story is fantastic. When I play games, story is the number 1 thing that keeps me interested. I couldn't tell you what the Gears story even is, but it didn't captivate me. I also feel like the characters and their weapons are overdesigned, so visually it is not a fun game for me to look at. As for the gameplay itself, it's okay I guess. It's not good enough to overcome the other deficiencies IMO.
I felt the same way about Gears of War 2, and had to force myself to finish it. Too much going below surface, coming above surface, below, above, below. We saw the underground in the first game, so the second game should have saved that for near the end, instead of making it seem like they were recycling the same locals and textures throughout the second game. And they just throw out concepts without an actual value to a whole 'story.' Things like the Queen and the Sires are never explained, not even in the sequel. On that, if you think the 2nd game has a bad story then do not play the 3rd. The story is truly awful, like an "oh shit, we'd better wrap this game up now with some improbable device that some character we've told you was dead all along preposterously made, and conveniently just seconds before you need to use it" bad. So bad that Ice-T's monologue is actually the best part of dialog in the game, and he's only in the game for less than 5 minutes.

I'd actually say play Gears of War Judgment for a better Gears of War storyline. It has actual characters, who have some actual emotions at points. And if you really want to enjoy the games, you should play them with friends or other people. You'll have a better experience if you feel like you're working towards something with a friend, rather than playing alone, allowing you to think about how bad the last line of dialog was. If you do prefer to play alone then Judgment's AI teammates are actually good.

That must be the problem then. I just looked on the Marketplace real quick before work. This is my first time doing Telltale's season pass on Xbox (they just show up as being free on PSN).

Omg, Telltale is showing how not to deliver an episodic game. Screwing on every chapter.

That might just be the way the Xbox marketplace works, pass DLCs appear to have separate, hidden listings on the marketplace. The Gears 3 and Borderlands 2 Season Pass DLCs have different GUIDs in my download history vs. the regular web marketplace. I can queue them up, but there are no pages for them. Listings for other pass DLCs warn not to double dip in their descriptions.

Absolution for the 360 right? Not sure what's going on yet.
Yeah, Absolution. For whatever reason, the game was marked free for everyone at some point this morning and stayed that way for a few hours.

It will probably be TitanFall since they've basically given it away already in the console bundles and price drops.
While that would be a great start, I doubt they give away such a recent retail release. It will probably be a digital only game to start.

I predict a major upgrade to GWG at E3 this year...
I predict that MS announces Games with Gold on X1 as a "rental" model just like PS+ (i.e. no subscription = no more game). They probably won't bother changing anything on the 360 though.

If its more "rental" based AND includes NEW-ish games, I'm okay with that. At this point, anyone who owns an Xbox One has Gold. I like the always purchased option though. But whatever happens, happens.
(Also as long as you don't permanently LOSE the game if you let slip your Gold for a little bit.)

My take on the "rental" thing with Instant Game Collection is that without requiring a PS+ subscription for online play, Sony needed a hook to keep people subscribed. Now that PS+ is required for online multiplayer, there are probably a lot less people basing their subscription decision on IGC.

I was so glad the season pass worked for TWAU this time around, but I did notice myself that achievements did not appear so I did not bother playing it yet. Glad to hear that it seems it's fixed, they seem to be pretty much unable to nail a launch for an episode with this game, reminds me of how badly the episodic gaming turned out when Valve made it popular. I'm baffled, The Walking Dead pretty much assured them incredible visibility and sales for whatever game they do, and they keep on making "identical" episodic games: same engine, nearly unchanged gameplay, and there's pretty much always the same glitches and issues the previous episode or saga had. Let that be save troubles, freezes, stuttering, or issues with buying the new eps. Mind you, I bought multiple sagas by Telltale and I'm not hating on them, but given the sales and visibility they got lately, they could spend a bit more time and effort on making games and episodes that... you know, work well. One would think that with such an old engine, the issues you had years ago would be fixed in a new game. But nope. Hell, I remember the stuttering issues being present in Sam & Max, and they're still around in The Wolf Among Us. Good thing they can pull off rather amazing stories to keep me hooked, because they sure do their worst when packaging things :p

I agree with this. The subscription model is usually very profitable, but no way was Sony going to start requiring a paid subscription for multiplayer midway through the PS3 lifecycle. Instead they used something else, the "free" games, as a way to get people used to paying for a Sony subscription. That way they could slide the paid multiplayer requirement in there for the next generation.

Anyone else having ridiculously low download speeds from Xbox today? Everything else is fine with them it seems, but I started downloading Alan Wake and it was at 5 freaking percent after 2 hours which is insanely slow for me, it never takes more than 4 hours for me to download a 7 gig game normally.
