Just headed over here from Major Nelson, I assumed this thread would be extremely happy over these sweet deals, and Sonic CD at 400 points. I was right.

I'll get Bandai-O for sure, contemplating Radiant Silvergun and Guwange, and Rock of Ages for sure next week. Gameplay didn't seem amazing in the demo, but seems goofy enough to be worth $5.
Great sale this week but I need to pick two.

I've tried the demos of each and I'm torn. Assuming that the difficulty scales up--off the chart in some cases--after the demo level, how would you rank the full games? [in terms of "fun" and single-player experience]
Fun: RS>Bangaio>HC:U>Guwange

SP Experience: RS>HC:U>Bangaio>Guwange

HC:U & Bangaio will last you the longest - HC:U for the sheer amount of unlockables, Bangaio is limitless because of the level editor. Both of these games get pretty difficult towards the end, but are doable.

Guwange is the hardest of the bunch. One of CAVE's best shooters of all time and will not cost you $80+ to import. The reason I put it at the bottom of my rankings is because this is the one game of the group that I can see people disliking because of difficulty.

Radiant Silvergun is my favorite shmup of all time. I cannot and will not say anything bad about it. Weapons, enemies, bosses, stages, music..... everything is excellent.

Figures shmups start going on sale after I buy most of them.

Looks like this week is Sonic CD (provided it is indeed released at 400) and Bangai-O depending on the trial.
Some asshat on SD copied this thread word for word. He even used the title 'Japan's finest".
That's what Major Nelson called it. The "Japan's Finest" isn't a CAG original.

Does he include the metacritic links as well?

Holy fuck! A shmup sale? In for everything but Hard Corps Uprising since I already had it! Joy! Not that I want to complain but if they had put Strania on sale as well I think they would have put every shmup I want on sale. So close, but heck I'm thrilled to bits to see what's there.
Hard Corps is a spiritual successor to the Contra games... and really hard.
Spiritual? I thought it was part of the series, not separate. Just that they took Contra from the title...
Spiritual? I thought it was part of the series, not separate. Just that they took Contra from the title...
This is what happened. The Contra was removed after the game was already in development. I think it's because the game doesn't live up to the Contra name, but a lot of people seem to like it. I was disappointed. I'm not someone who likes to grind out levels in games.

Never played any of the Japanese shmups on sale this week. I have Ikaruga but I can't even get past the first freaking level. I'm not bad at games by any means.

Should I give any of them a try?

Joy indeed.

And Rock of Ages is next week! Sweet!
i love shumps (even when i suck at them) this deal just make my day, im going the get all ....
Dude, your Mario avatar is awesome.

Thanks, im not into buying things for the avatar, but the day i saw the blue overall whit red shirt in the avatar market cannot say no......

Definitely. I have both of the shmups on sale this week, and they're more in line with being traditional. Ikaruga was...out there, and it was good for it, but it's one of the harder shmups I've played.
Some asshat on SD copied this thread word for word. He even used the title 'Japan's finest".
Some asshat always copied the thread word for word. Just wait until we get the 2012 countdown sales and you will see it everywhere.

It's pretty easy to tell if someone did a copy and paste job. I can tell you SD didn't copy it from the OP.

EDIT:
As far as the metacritic thing goes, I honestly haven't put my links up yet since I was at a final.

In for Sonic CD (@ 400 MSP) and Rock of Ages. I'll be passing on this week's DotW since shmups aren't my thing but it's good to see a good DotW again. I'm also happy to see that the end of year sale has been confirmed.

Then just play Arcade Mode. Problem solved. But most critics and gamers seem to like Rising Mode and the value it brings to the game. Me, I enjoyed Hard Corps Uprising more than either PS2 Contra or Contra 4 on DS, though the PS2 ones were alright.

How I have failed as a CAG. Being a fan of both Cave and Treasure, I purchased all 3 titles at full price. Hard Corps: Uprising, I purchased the last time it was on sale.

I have yet to play Radiant Silvergun on XBLA because I played it so much on the Sega Saturn (I had no idea full retail, $50USD, at the time would end out to be a bargain price for the game), but I feel the game was designed for an arcade button setup of 3 across, or a Sega Saturn pad (3 over 3), so the remapping of the three basic guns (you can combine the 3 guns to have different shots) onto a stock 360 pad feels weird. The graphics were impressive on the Saturn, technical showcase worthy, even better the XBLA release enhances it a bit from the past. I recommend the game, but just to me, I feel it could play more naturally on the 360 with an arcade stick (which has the 3 over 3 button layout) or the poor imitation of a Sega Saturn contoller by Madcatz.

Guwange was a fine danmaku (bullet hell) game, but I have heard it is one of Cave's weakest games. I still found it quite enjoyable, since I find it unique with the characters walking (like the Kikikaikai games, Pocky & Rocky in the US). Guwange just gives you a taste of what Cave games are like ... but, most other Cave games are a bit costly on the 360.

Bangaio HD, I feel lost a lot of personality from the old N64 game and the later Dreamcast iteration. The game mechanics are still there, but now it feels more like a twin stick shooter on the 360. So I feel it took a couple steps down, but my Treasure fandom kept me from waiting on a sale.

Go MS, this sale was an impressive surprise! Keep it up!

The Hori EX Pad 2 also has a 6-button layout, and it's basically the best controller for games like this. Much better than the Madcatz pads.

Actually, Rising mode is pretty much required if you want to enjoy it like Contra, in my opinion. I enjoyed the game a lot more once I had grinded out some power ups. The default run speed is way too slow and the default weapons are too underwhelming - it doesn't even feel like classic Contra. The pea shooter default gun doesn't even do enough damage to kill things some timed things within the given time limits, unless you have godlike skills (which at 18 I had, at 40 not so much). Once you can run faster, jump better and don't have to play perfectly to have decent weapons it is a lot of fun and definitely has a good Contra vibe, and it doesn't make it easy either, even fully leveled up it takes concentration and good play to beat.

I will totally buy Rock of Ages the moment it's available as DotW. As for this week, I guess I have a lot of demos to try out...

can anyone answer this for me? I have a 8-button joystick. Can all of these games (especially Hard Corp and Radiant Silvergun) be used with it?

The reason I ask is surprisingly, some games that should work with joysticks don't. Classic example is Limbo. There's nothing about that game that says it requires an analog stick.

Is it an off-brand stick? Perhaps giving the demos a try is the best way to tell if you can use that controller with each of those games.

This:

was a beast to configure properly.... for some reason, button presses do not change the configuration for LB, LT, RB & RT (you have to select the input using left/right), meaning I had to fiddle with the settings until it was right, then not touch them once they were.

yes, but you can't use Limbo with the D-pad. They only mapped to the analog stick.

It's a Tekken 8-button fight stick.

That's true. I could just try the demos.

Definitely getting Sonic CD. I had a Super Nintendo growing up while my best friend had a Sega. I love going back and playing all these old Sega games I could only play at friends houses, especially when they are only 400 points.

wow! that's an insane stick! did you build that???
wow! that's an insane stick! did you build that???
Yep... well kinda. It's a modded Hori Real Arcade Pro EX-SE.... heavily modded ^_^

-and thanks, btw :D

EDIT: now everyone can see how serious I truly am about Radiant Silvergun!!!

Hard Corps is a mixed bag. I love Contra and really wanted to like it, but the gameplay is ridiculously grindy. Be prepared to replay the early levels over and over and over before you can make any real progress in the game. I bought it last time it was on sale for 600 and somewhat regret it. Got burned out by the time I made it to stage 3 and haven't touched it since.

Anyway, I'm probably in for Radiant Silvergun.

^The only stick that I know of that works with all games is the MADCATZ Sticks. The tournament edition has a setting that allows you to map the joystick to either R. Analog, Dpad, or L. Analog. Its the perfect stick and comes with all sanwa parts so I can play my fighters and shmups with out worrying about buttons.

....which is EXACTLY why my next custom stick will include a Fightpad hack - that dpad switch is invaluable.

-thanks, Thrinn =)

....how are those PDP pads? My Madcatz Chun Li pad is just about dead, gonna use the PCB to make another stick soon.... but I always like having a gamepad with a 2x3 button configuration around.

For $19.99 at GameStop, it can't be beat. You can feel the microswitch going around all 8 directions, and has the same click feeling for the buttons.

It's those microswitches that worry me.... to me it felt like a part that would wear out pretty quickly. Microswitches are usually used in applications where they are easy to replace for this very reason.

Sorry to hijack the thread all, I'll head over to SRK now...
Why am I ever so slightly upset I didn't buy Bloody Good Time? I really shouldn't be...
I bought it last week for some reason and it's absolutely the worst XBLA game I've downloaded. Completely unredeemable crap.
