Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-05-28
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

Very interesting.

So if a 3rd party studio is making a game that is exclusive to next gen and not designed to run on PS4 or X1, will they be required to make it scaleable to old hardware? Obviously PCs built in 2013 may still run new games in low settings and there is plenty of cross-development with PC and consoles, but some games are already running poorly. The last patch for Borderlands 3 actually made splitscreen worse and my gf and I gave up on it, for example.

Will 3rd parties have the option to make hardware exclusives? I think it comes own to whether or not Sony takes a similar approach.

I think it just means MS isn't leaving Xbox One owners high and dry and will be making all their own games work on both. All games that have come out since before the holiday now have a green "Xbox One" banner on the bottom which points to them using the same cases again for next gen. They will likely have Xbox One/Xbox Series X or whatever at top like the backwards compatible games that come in Xbox One cases.

If i can keep my one X and play all of Microsofts offerings into to the first year or two of the Series X's life than what is the draw to buy the new expensive console?  Its not hard to imagine someone skipping it and just getting a PS5 to go along with their old xbox one.  I like the consumer friendly approach but I do worry about early adoption rates and perception of the platform by 3rd party developers.

the draw is the same for people that bought the X when they already had an S or OG VCR

you are buying a premium product that makes games look and run much better

I'm just pulling shit out my ass because I don't fucking know, but maybe they're thinking long term with getting people in on things with Game Pass and a cheaper option (by than) One X to still get 4K gaming and Game Pass that by the time they move on they'll be integrated into the ecosystem and be more willing to a Series X. This is the only reason I can think of why they'd do this, but then again it sounds like GPU as a whole is a big part of their sales pitch going forward for the XBox brand as a whole.

Though for me personally this still changes nothing as my backlog allows me to wait 2-3 years after launch before buying the Series X, but who knows. There still is the question of third party like Tyrok brought up.

You hear that, One X? You still have time to shine on my shelf!
I don't like this at all. The original X1/X1S are somewhat underpowered even for this generation. Forcing games to support those could hobble innovation in new games. And I'm betting that Sony will have no requirement to make anything new run on a PS4, which means those developers won't have to worry about this issue (other than the inevitable set of dual-platform games that will straddle the 2 generations for a little whlie).

It's just for Microsoft Game Studios games though. I trust they know how to optimize to for both systems appropriately.

Right. If Ubisoft wants to make their next game Series X Only, they can... but this is a good indicator that the next Forza game will run on both X1 and SX.

RIP Neil Peart. I Saw you live at Red Rocks and I saw you in a movie theater in Aqua Teen Hunger Force The Movie in a watermelon spaceship.

It's probably what you mean but I bet they'd have series x enhanced games like X1X where you can download an enhancement DLC or patch.

Damn. I used to love Rush. Peart definitely best drummer ever IMO.

While I listen more to newer alt rock these days, should add some Rush back into the rotation. Saw them in concert three times in the 80s and early 90s.

If this is the case then that sounds great. It also retains folks for Game Pass / XBL / etc if first party games work on your One S even in late 2021 and you got a PS5 but haven't upgraded the Xbox yet. I've personally found the 5-6 year cycle way too short with hardware being what it is these days, so this is only a positive.

Now if the rumors are true that Sony is working on a dynamic emulation solution for all PS generations, I'd probably get a PS5 first.

I can't believe MS is seriously releasing a super console with no exclusives.

I can't believe MS is seriously releasing a super console with no exclusives.

There will be exclusives ... to the Xbox ecosystem.

Do you mean to say you think Xbox One should be supported longer? It released in November 2013 somewhat underpowered as is. By the time Series X launches, Xbox One will be 7 years old. To me, it already feels long in the tooth. There hasn't been an Xbox or PS console with a 5-6 year cycle since the original Xbox or PS2.

Hey, I’m fine with exclusives for the Xbox family. Just worried that the Series X will look like a flop if current people decide to wait to upgrade.

We’ll see but if I can get more life out of my X, I honestly may look at the PS5. Then again that’s partly due to my recent purchase of a PSVR. Those games should play better than my fatty PS4 does.

Still favor Xbox as a whole though. We’ll see.

If it's true, I'm just wondering what they're going to do with all those PS classic games that I bought on the PS3. That is unless they do digital console emulation like the One, which sounds like a pain in the ass. I don't want to deal with the hell of uable to do something as simple as categorizing my damn games.

I'm not actually that surprised by this exclusive announcement. Most of the studios that aren't new acquisitions are unlikely to have something big lined up for close to launch aside from Halo and maybe Playground's game. Most of the recent acquisitions were unlikely to have massive AAA projects in development aside from maybe Obsidian, and virtually all of the studios were pretty multiplatform friendly, meaning their games were usually somewhat flexible so their games could run on a decent range of PCs.

The other perspective here is from Microsoft's angle, and the apparent approach of multiple Scorpios is already a strange one that we're not used to, with Game Pass being a big factor as well.

I have two Steam codes for the Temtem stress test as well. Send me a PM if you’re interested and will actually use it. Really looking forward to this game!

If we can play these games on our phones via streaming, they're going to be playable on the old machines. I can see the 1X down to $200 as an entry point and the older machines being compatible only through streaming. We are not the target. This is a gamble, something new, and it could be wrong. At least it seems to be consumer friendly instead of the launch of this gen.

I like that they're not looking at live service games since Gamepass is the service. If they're telling the truth, the games are able to bed the selling point.

I'm willing to bet Sony will be doing the same with the PS5 launch. There's just no reason to leave behind your previous audience these days. Especially when Sony has sold 100+ million PS4s. Ghost of Tsushima could have easily been held as a launch exclusive but that would be the difference between selling under 5 million over it's lifetime or 10+ with the promise of a PS5 launch patch.

Don’t worry. I’ll be here.

Xbox, GamePass and bad date nights for life!

(Still would likely only do PS5 for exclusives and PSVR)

I’d like to point out that when the Xbox one launched many games were released for both the Xbox 360 and the Xbox one. Assassins creed 4, various call of duties, shadow of Mordor, etc. supporting both platforms for a year seems completely reasonable. I do recognize the 360 versions of games were gimped, but the Xbox one versions were the de facto version to play. I see this announcement as something in the same vein.

I’d love to hear others’ thoughts

I was thinking the same thing, and we saw the same thing happen with the original Xbox and the 360. The difference is that they will not be developed or published separately and just scale like PC games running on old hardware. It makes a lot of sense.

It's not impossible. Every console with a huge install base had to move on eventually. The PS2, the Wii, the 360. In the past the attempt to capitalize on that old player-base has been backwards compatibility, which was largely to help with the garbage that most launch lineups tend to be, but really was probably a flawed plan to begin with since the people that care the most about this feature usually already own the old thing.

Now we're in new territory since it the desire to keep full BC from the player-base is finally feasible due to consoles essentially being pre-built PCs starting with Xbone and PS4, plus streaming services will help round this out.

With Sony's attitude over the past few years I could still see them doing a fresh restart again if it the tech wasn't were it is now. It's generally risky unless a console has some massive hit right away (like the Wii and Wii Sports). The PS4 was an interesting case because it had a pretty weak launch line up. It sold insanely well because people wanted to upgrade and both the Xbox One and Wii U completely shit the bed on launch. Then they had the moment and eventually had a lot of good first-party games as well as incidental exclusives from Japanese games that didn't care about Xbox and couldn't run on the Wii U.

If PS5 can play PSOne games, that means it can play music CDs, and that is better than the last generation. I like being able to listen to music, while playing games. That's one of my favorite Xbox features. Not sure why they felt the need to remove it after the PS3.

Anyone else thinking Doom Eternal? I have a $50 BB cert that expires next week. Was thinking of pre-ordering the Deluxe edition. Still have GCU for a few more weeks.

I honestly don't think it's that much different than something like an Iphone/Ipad and they have seem to be pretty intent on telling us "these hardware releases are like phones now" for quite awhile. VCR and the One S get moved out next cycle and the Xbox One X becomes the new low tier, rinse repeat down the road.

As far as people worried about it hampering the development or not seeing benefits on the Series X, these things are more like PCs than ever. It's going to be no different than you just have the programmed game code, and I just went out and got a new CPU or a new Graphics card. The game is going to be the same, but when the wind blows through that fabric banner in Mirror's Edge look how cool that looks now or look at my awesome hair on Geralt now in Witcher 3 cause my new card can run NVIDIA hairworks ;)

We're a long way away from the days of ok this is a totally different beast to program for like a NES to SNES, or a Playstation 2 to Playstation 3. I'm sure Third parties are actually totally on board as it's all reduced cost to them.

Couple podcasts I listen to, like Giant Beastcast for sure I can recall, said they were having some kind of event this morning so I'm sure a bunch more preview info will be going up this next week. I'm not expecting them to say much different than what people have already said, if you like the new reboot you'll like this but now there is some new traversal mechanics. I did hear a few people kind of iffy on those, so might have a clearer picture next week.

Brand New rumor says that the series X will play Steam games, and Epic Store games. Making it basically a PC.

Worse things you could burn it on. I had to look up what the deluxe came with. I was expecting multiplayer junk, but season pass has 2 campaign add-ons. That's a tough time for me so I might have to wait but go for it.

First off, Xbox has not had any exclusives for a long time, you can play them on PC.

Second, we already knew they were doing things for Xbox One for a while still, they did last gen too but this time it will be even easier because the architecture will be the same. You wouldn’t want to abandon all your Xbox One friends.

Third, the Series X will most likely be the most powerful console available and I’ll be trying to get one within the first couple months because it will be the best place to play Halo Infinite. Forza is gonna be lit on Xbox Series X.

Nothing about Matt Bootys statement was shocking or interesting to me, we already knew what he said because of other statements Microsoft has made.

the game pass quest to log into app 4 separate days popped back up on the xbox and I had completed it so I punched it and got the 100 points

just fyi for those that also had it disappear and are trying to get those points

It's not the same thing. With previous Xboxes, Microsoft was still putting out new titles for the next-gen Xbox. The original Xbox didn't have Gears of War. Xbox 360 didn't have Forza 5. Series X isn't getting anything for at least a year or two after launch. I think a lot of people will wait to pick one up.

Your right because Xbox to Xbox 360 they changed architecture, Xbox 360 to Xbox One they changed architecture. Xbox One to Xbox Series X will be the same architecture so why would you limit your best first party games to only people willing to drop $500-600 on Series X? The Series X will be the fastest most powerful way to play, with virtually no load times on games and high graphics settings. It’s for people that want the best, those are the ones that will buy it.

This right here is reason enough for me to consider the next gen when it launches. Like Barry Burton said, the XSX is aimed at gamers that want the best console experience money can buy.

I forgot to say the other part, I'll bet spacebucks their not going to have Steam or Epic Store compatibility. Not outside of workaround to streaming.
