Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-05-16
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

So idk if anyone cares but if you jump on the PayPal app and buy $25+ of crypto they'll give you a bonus $25 in reward. I bought with fees, sold it and used the rewards at Walmart for a $25 Xbox Card. Cost me around $2

So idk if anyone cares but if you jump on the PayPal app and buy $25+ of crypto they'll give you a bonus $25 in reward. I bought with fees, sold it and used the rewards at Walmart for a $25 Xbox Card. Cost me around $2

Wonder if that’s targeted. I didn’t have that ad in my app.

I would say that it's pretty close to unbelievable that people would respond to the unexpected early drop of a beloved franchise's beloved multiplayer mode (during a still-churning pandemic that has affected all of us, but maybe most relevant to this specific context made game development a nightmare) for "free" (or no extra cost to anyone with a subscription service that many or most people have gotten for steep discounts) by complaining about its progression systems less than 24 hours into playing the game ... but. then again, I have gleaned far more dismal knowledge about the entitlement, selfishness, myopia, and misery of my fellow Americans over the course of this pandemic.

If we were still in the custom of gifting horses, the phrase wouldn't be "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" but "don't accept gift horses without full and clean dental records."

It's Halo multiplayer. I played enough of it as a kid to have nostalgia for it; I played enough of this one in the last 24 hours to know this is a fine version of what people want from Halo. If you like Halo multiplayer, I suspect you're going to like it even if you totally ignore the progression; if you don't, I have to wonder both why are you even playing the game and how could you possibly care about its progression system?

I want Binary Domain. Hoping it’ll be in the BF sales.
I tried to play this back in the day. Guess I was being stupid but it was repeatedly telling me to get to the roof. This was at the start of the game. I couldn't figure out how and it wouldn't STFU. So rage quit. lol Maybe it was a demo not sure. Type of game that is in my wheel house but it was annoying ASF. One of the reasons I was never a big fan of games that are always yelling at you. Found Crackdown annoying for the same reason.

I always wanted to give BD another try but never did.

Oh yeah, the response to criticism where someone reveals they have low standards and project their own cynicism on others. I think the point you are missing is that the criticism about Halo's progression (and other things, lest we forget) is from people who enjoy the game but have genuine issues with certain aspects of it's design. I mean are you suggesting everyone should have no opinion about all the various gear presented in the the various menus you have to sit through? That everyone complaining about a regressive matchmaking system that doesn't even let you choose which gametypes you want should be like 'I'm thankful this was released during a pandemic after being delayed for a year?'

I mean for crying out loud, "It's Halo multiplayer" is literally your counter argument. A series that radically reinvented itself to the point it almost lost it's very identity and became a Call of Duty in space.

It's... not a "gift horse" though? I mean MS didn't just drop this out of the kindness of their hearts, and last I checked they are still dropping the campaign at 59.99. I don't understand how "well it's free to play" somehow should shield them from all criticisms. (Not really speaking directly to you with this but I've seen this narrative a lot out there). Who asked for this? I have game pass, and even if I didn't, I probably would have gladly dropped 60 bucks to have a multiplayer suite with customization and progression consistent with what we've come to expect from the series from Halo Reach on. I don't remember ever sitting there playing MCC and thinking man, you know what would be awesome? If this was free and included a bunch of manipulative systems to get me to want to spend more time and money on it. I get that all these systems are consistent with pretty much every other "games as a service" online multiplayer game, but I don't think it's fair to label everyone as entitled for being critical of a beloved longstanding AAA franchise because they're talking about something you personally don't care about.

The whole point of a beta is to work out issues with the game, and get feedback from the participants so the game can be made better. Progression has been a big part of Halo since 3 whether some people care about it or not. If you don’t care, then enjoy your game and don’t worry about other’s opinions. Go to Reddit and tell 343 you think the game is great as is.

There's a staircase. Don't see how you could have missed it. I don't like games that have guide arrows or markers telling you exactly where to go. Those games feel like they're designed for toddlers or someone who has never played a video game.

Yeah like I said I think I was being stupid but I couldn't get to where ever they wanted me to go. I don't need arrows (well ok in driving they are nice). Just need the game to STFU instead of repeating the same unhelpful instructions over and over. Perhaps I was on the roof and couldn't get past a section. It was a long time ago.

You're projecting to say my standards are low, no? I've played a lot of video games in my life. What is on offer in the actual gameplay in this one is decidedly not substandard. It's not "a series that radically reinvented itself to the point it almost lost its very identity and became a Call of Duty in space": It's Halo, done pretty damn well.

I am also not missing the point about players having real issues. The lack of playlists is a significant quality of life thing that should be fixed, but unless you've done nothing else but play Infinite since Tuesday, I can't imagine it's really impacted your game-to-game fun or total enjoyment all that much -- and I think that's also a much larger concern than any related to progression.

I'm also not sure where you're deriving any resistance to you or others having genuine opinions about the game. Have them all you want. When you share them in public, you might get them called out for being miserable and/or overwrought.

The multiplayer is fully free-to-play even apart from Game Pass, which I probably should have noted originally, making it very much free to millions of humans (who previously paid the access fees of owning an Xbox One+ and having Internet access and so forth). And while how many is up for debate, there are both Halo fans/diehards who will not touch the campaign and curious players who will play the multiplayer who would never have done so without this being dropped as a F2P game.

That does not shield -- or overshield, do you get it -- any developer or publisher from criticism, of course. But free-to-play games being, uh, free to play makes it very difficult for me to respond to the sort of caterwauling we all hear about battle passes and microtransactions and other ways of subsidizing game development with anything but eye-rolling.

I grew up buying (and having my parents buy) $60+ games that were developed for a fraction of what today's games cost to develop; that was, at that point, a relatively fair trade of labor for income for developers and publishers. In the last 15 or so years, publishers failed to go to war for more expensive games like they should have while costs skyrocketed, instead trying to (and succeeding in) engineer lower-cost games with deeply manipulative monetization strategies, and we've all reaped the whirlwind in that regard, whether that has come in the form of Candy Crush begging for money to get past Level 454, "games as a service" models in which development can never be fully complete, developers thus being in perpetual crunch in overheated frat house environments, Fortnite and Minecraft and Roblox paving the way for games to become platforms and storefronts more than games, or a thousand other examples you and I can point to.

Compared to all that, a bare-bones progression system (related to purely cosmetic items) and some puzzling quality-of-life choices in a surprise early drop of a multiplayer mode that is otherwise rather impressively polished despite its status as a GAAS/F2P monstrosity seem to me to be ... almost benign? Fully forgivable? Likely most worth notice for anyone but people conditioned to find flaws in everything related to the games they play because finding flaws and discussing them is what fuels gaming communities even more than shared enjoyment does, these days?

I'm not calling you, personally, entitled for anything; I was making a blanket statement that is obviously not going to pertain to every complaint or its petitioner. But "who asked for this?" isn't a rhetorical question without an answer: The answer is that no one on our end did, but the realities of the industry and capitalism coerced it and similar from all of us. And the tone and tenor of the complaints about it suggest to me that either a stunning number of adults don't get that this particular war was waged (and, for basically anyone but CEOs, lost) a long time ago or that way more children are in these spaces than I generally think.

(I'd have put this all in a spoiler tag but I cannot for the life of me remember how to do that, so any help on that end would be appreciated.)

Like 6 month delay I think from the original busy ass date of February? I think it needs more to get excited over regardless.
"They're going to love this remaster remake rerelease, it'll be poppin'!"

*Sees response to GTA Trilogy*

"Uh, yeah we need to delay the release by...six months..."

Loaded up Gunvalkyrie. Game seems interesting but the controls are whack. Bunch of weird choices and no options. It's Inverted by default so use the Xbox Accessories app to fix it if you need to.
I was playing Otogi last night and the camera control is inverted and is driving me crazy. If I change the setting in the Xbox Accessories App will it only effect this game? How exactly does one go about making this change. I also installed Gunvalkyrie yesterday too but only had time for a couple levels of Otogi.

I'll just say if a core system is fucked you can usually tell quickly, and complaining is how stuff gets changed. Is it as big a detriment as actual gameplay being messed up? No, but it is a pillar of the experience for many players.

Armor customization became a talking point in Halo when MCC botched it for years, and unlocks and progression were hated in 5. Even Infinite had people weary from the start since they removed custom colors.

If it doesn't bother you fine, but this is a topic that touches literally every AAA shooter I can think of, even Doom Eternal.

No, it's a system level change, but you can swap controller/game profiles in the app once set up. You just need to invert Y on the offending stick.

If you have an Elite controller you can set multiple profiles with the selector switch so you don't have to go to the app as often.

See also the last few WoW xpacks. A core system needed reworking and Halsted the overall experience.

I appreciate the reasonable and level headed response here, and honestly, I agree with you on many fronts. The only thing I'll say is that, yes, some of these things have impacted the enjoyment in the game for me, whether it's being lumped into objective based matches with teammates who don't want to PTFO, or teammates just outright grinding stupid battle pass challenges and not focusing on the actual game being played. I played with a couple buddies last night and had a blast, but I do see these things having an impact for the general user at some level. Personally, this is more a million times more annoying to me than the progression thing, but I do understand why that's important to some.

And yeah, I think we're pretty much on the same page as far as the industry trends and everything. You probably came up on Halo 2 and Halo 3 just the same as I did, and I guess on a personal level it's just frustrating to see major titles like Halo move closer to the Fortnite model and further from the stuff we came up wasting thousands of hours on, but that's just kind of where things are at these days. But I'm almost to the point where I want to just stop playing new games altogether, rather than just say "ah well, at least this game isn't a completely in-your-face cash grab." I've actually gone back to some 360 multiplayer games with a bunch of my buddies (Halo 3 customs, COD, Gears, etc) and I'm having way more fun messing around on that than I have with any recent game these days. I don't think I'll be getting rid of my Xbox One any time soon, and I'm sure I'll have Halo Infinite in the rotation as long as my friends keep playing, but it does make me a little sad and reminiscent of days gone by.

There’s another glitched achievement in Halo that’s a lot easier to get than intended. Completing 5 level 1 gun mastery challenges unlocks the achievement. It’s supposed to be by completing 5 level 3 gun challenges. It’ll be fixed soon so hurry and get it.

My guess is that half of it will be online only which means they don't need print ads that leak early.

"You're projecting to say my standards are low, no? I've played a lot of video games in my life. What is on offer in the actual gameplay in this one is decidedly not substandard. "

You don't know what that word means and use it anyway, it sounds like you don't know what alot of this stuff means and speak on it anyway.

"It's not "a series that radically reinvented itself to the point it almost lost its very identity and became a Call of Duty in space": It's Halo, done pretty damn well."

Your response to a series that almost lost it's identity is 'It's Halo, done pretty damn well'. That is like me asking what time is it and you say it's sunny outside.

You may have played alot of videogames in your life (how is this even relevant?) but you are demonstrating you don't understand much about them. Among many other things, sprinting, armor abilities, perks and care packages were added to the series in response to more popular shooter like CoD. They have since been removed or tweaked to fit into the series. You can have whatever opinion you want on them, but if you played Halo Reach +Halo 4 and seen them as carbon copies of the prequels with little influence from other popular shooters, not mention the drastic tonal shift when 343i took over, I dunno what to tell you.

"I am also not missing the point about players having real issues. Actually, yeah, you are totally missing the point about players having real issues. No one is complaining about lack of playlists, they are complaining about not being able to select their playlist so they can play the matchtypes they want instead of random ones every time. Lack of playlists isn't even a QoL thing. QoL is in regards to making aspects of a game easier to play.

Again, you are literally demonstrating your own ignorance on the issues at hand, but you'll speak on it anyway.

"I'm also not sure where you're deriving any resistance to you or others having genuine opinions about the game. Have them all you want. When you share them in public, you might get them called out for being miserable and/or overwrought."

You know why I said you were projecting your own cynicism on others? Because you are constantly demonstrating it, like right here. Halo Infinite's reception is mostly positive. There are legions of passionate Youtube videos, Twitch streams and reddit posts that gush over how good it is, how it's so much better than Halo4/5 and a return to form for the series, but also point out the flaws. And that counts as 'miserable and overwrought'. That is your takeaway from all of it.

Funny thing is I saw your post last night about the Mythic Achievement unlocking in bot matches. I was going to fight bots and get it out the way, then I got into a real match and went 26-0.

With consumer spending up month after month I figure they'd be more...aggressive? Unless supply shortage fucked them over more than they imagined. Though I remember last year basically everything went live the Sunday the week of Black Friday. Also I want to know the ads because somehow Best Buy still has the worst and slowest retail website and I just want crap saved (if any crap worth noting) so I can instantly add to my cart instead of browsing through their terribly slow website.

Interesting news that Alien Isolation is coming out on mobile next month. Think I’ll stick with the FPS boosted version we have but will be curious how it turns out.

Lol yes. Put it in a wish list so when they wipe carts you can add it quickly.

Two posts by one person on a message board thread seemingly being taken as "constant demonstration" of "cynicism" feels not unlike extrapolating -- from posts focusing on the flaws of a game we seem to agree is being received well -- that focusing on flaws even in a context where few can be found is the result of an uncanny ability of some to dwell on the negative even when it only minimally detracts from the positives.

But, then, I wasn't basing my global observations like "finding flaws and discussing them is what fuels gaming communities even more than shared enjoyment does, these days" on two posts by one person on a message board thread -- I suppose I was thinking more about how a tour of Game Informer, Gamespot, GamesRadar, IGN, Kotaku, and Polygon turns up a slew of posts about the battle pass, including one that calls it "stingy" on the front page of the site and another that goes with "sucks, fans say," or how the Halo subreddit's most popular posts this week tilt more toward "I hate the battle pass" than "This game is great, but I hate the battle pass."

Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Maybe I'm cynical.

I’m just happy to see so much Halo talk in this thread again. I plan on playing a lot of infinite, I was having fun playing it for my first time last night. My first thought when looking at the battle pass was “they put stuff that was free on Halo Reach multiplayer behind a pay and grind wall”. I think that sucks but I get that the old $60 price isn’t working for these companies so they need more money. You can see some idiots have already paid the $150 to unlock all the battle pass levels, because some have unlocked the achievement for completing a battle pass, and paying to complete it is the only way to do it this quickly. The fact that people pay $150 for an achievement and some flaming armor means this model is working and they will continue to do it.

To me it’s like Apex Legends, do I think it’s morally good for gaming companies to prey on people with addictive personalities to get them to spend hundreds of dollars on cosmetics? No, probably not. If you don’t care about cosmetics though, it allows you to play 1000’s of hours of quality shooter games at little to no out of pocket cost besides Hardware.

Played it for the first time last night, never even looked at the battle pass.  Despite putting many hours into I have also never bought a premium apex legends battle pass.  I guess it just doesn't appeal to me but for those who like that sort of thing I hope they adjust the progression.

That grappling hook is fun as hell though.

Apparently cloud gaming is officially available on X1 and Series S|X today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K_sGV1mM7A

More info:

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2021/11/17/xbox-cloud-gaming-launches-on-console/

"For Xbox One users, cloud gaming also allows you to play some next gen games on the Xbox One console you already own. This means select games that are currently only playable on Xbox Series X|S, like Recompile, The Medium, and The Riftbreaker, are now playable on your Xbox One with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and cloud gaming. We will also continue to support this capability and expand our cloud game library to include more next gen games like Microsoft Flight Simulator in early 2022.

So, boot up your console, look for the cloud icon, and jump into your next favorite game."

Any criticism of Halo Infinite is good. I don't think anyone should take it personally (hopefully, nobody on the dev team does).

This isn't a single player experience that's over and done with already.

Just look at how far Sea of Thieves has come. It had so much criticism in the beginning but it was so much better at the end of the 1st year, and it keeps getting better and better every season. Part of that is from the feedback and criticism it received.

MS has long term goals with their games now and I'm all for it. I keep going back to State of Decay 2 every time they drop new FREE content.

The core gameplay is great and that is what matters most. I think if there is a progression system, it should add to the experience and not feel like a chore, but they can always update / fix that later as you said. The weight, movement, and feel of the game is perfect, though, which is the most important thing. It gives me faith that the campaign will turn out well.

Now this delves more into psychology rather than actual video game talk, but the problem isn’t that you’re cynical (I’m not saying you are), the problem is that everything is in a vacuum when it comes to the internet. Of course you’re only going to be seeing people complain on a video game subReddit (it’s not just Americans, it’s the entire gaming culture across the world) because that’s one of the only ways to voice a concern to the devs and get peer recognition/confirmation that it’s “not just me with this problem”. Unfortunately, they’ve (and most of the internet) have become more of a “complaint box” instead of an open forum discussion, and it’s hard to find things perfect enough not to nitpick. And not only that, everyone wants their own little soapbox to stand on so instead of having one mega thread discussing any problems, there’s a bajillion smaller threads taking up space and drowning the other legitimate threads out.

The people who are genuinely having fun with the game and are okay with how things are/waiting for the fixes are too busy playing the game in their off time. They’re going to show the devs support by actually being on the servers and continuing to play, but there are a few who take the time and make the devs’ days by posting a thread saying they love the game.

That’s why a lot of developers/programmers try to ignore any Internet forums/articles that pop up and leave it to the community managers to give them a rundown, because unless a game is perfect in every single way (which logically is impossible), people are going to nitpick at anything they don’t like.
____________________

As stated before, I’m still loving this halo, and it’s bringing back all the memories of times on Halo 2 and 3 trying to get max rank in any of the playlists. I’m really hoping that they bring back map/gametype voting, but with how matchmaking is setup, I don’t think there’s a “lobby” that players wait in, so it doesn’t seem likely.

And speaking of glitched achievements, the one where you have to “participate” in capturing all the zones that results in a point scored in BTB stronghold doesn’t require your team to score the point. You can separately capture each zone at least once, and it’ll give it to you. I popped that achievement halfway into in a match where both teams were constantly revolving capture control and the only point scored happened with 45 seconds left on the timer by the other team.

Extra edit: Also wanted to say that in terms of gameplay, they freaking nailed it. It feels like an actual Halo game instead of “COD with shields”.

Have to say my kid and I are enjoying the GWG Lego Batman 2. Hoping these new BC titles start populating future GWG.
Yeah, all the Lego games are surprisingly a ton of fun. There’s something about the animations and the gameplay that click together just right and make them a joy to play.

I thought I had Lego Lord of the Rings digitally but I guess I only have the disc. I think I bought way less digital during 360 era since I got burned by the Wii marketplace shutting down.
