Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-05-21
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

I don't think WQ was the "best" Bungie campaign but it was quite the return to old school, Halo 2/3/Reach on Legendary days, so it was a blast in that regard. But yeah, the seasonal model was and is still in place, so if that's not your bag, one good campaign for a few hours isn't going to change your mind. I'm fully invested now so I'm anxiously awaiting the showcase.
I don't know, maybe I have nostalgia goggles but I didn't think WQ came remotely close to the Halo Legendary campaigns. I only remember two tough parts, and a lack of overall variety.

Maybe it comes down to Halo having a pretty limited tool set? I steamrolled through almost everything with my main Sunbreaker build modified to use Severance Enclosure because Dunemarchers had been nerfed, healing when I picked up the hammer. Same loadout of Witherhoard, the BXR, and alternating different elements of rocket launchers for the entire story.

Location-wise it wasn't even on par with Forsaken, let alone a base Destiny game or Halo campaign.

The Gameflip addiction is real, lol. I bought New Super Lucky’s Tale, Huntdown and Legend Bowl within the last week or so. In other news, has anyone had trouble updating the Series Controller firmware? I’ve been trying to update my Lunar Shift controller to no avail.
Me: "wtf is Legend Bowl" goes to gameflip, insta buy.

Yup, stupid cheap games.

This is surprising. Rockstar bought the team (company?) that makes/runs the servers for the extremely popular GTA Roleplay mods. As I understand it they were already pretty monetized, so that probably was about to kick into overdrive. This kind of mod being forced into corporate red tape seems like a negative to me, but I'm not the audience so I don't really know. Maybe it means console RP modes for GTA6.

I hate everything about GTA Online. Just hoping that it doesn't affect the quality of the single player story.

I'm still plugging away because we got the "free" BP. I've only unlocked 1 of the experience ashes so far but the seasonal bonuses feel like a joke. I never played D3 but I was under the impression that leveling seasonal characters was supposed to be faster. I've been trying to craft a wrathful invoker to complete the challenge, and now I read they had the crafting rate for it set to 2 or 3%. WHY? It feels like too many of their design choices are made to make you waste time, so I'm bouncing after this season until an expansion is released.
The Battlepass rewards have for sure been underwhelming. Also, it feels like they lowered the regular xp gains just so you have to use the smoldering ashes to get those xp boosts to bring you back to normal xp again, its really not a great feeling. They are really screwing up on Overwatch 2 and on this Diablo 4 stuff.

Fortnite expansion, EA Sports games, Just Dance and that Call of Duty game that took place in World War II that isn't World at War.
You mean CoD: WWII?

Just kidding. I forgot WWII existed before Vanguard too. Do COD games generally get discounted that low though? I don't remember if I've ever seen a retail COD game for less than $20 on sale.

Deathloop and a buncha Ubi games.
Immortals Fenyx Rising

That Vanguard one is seemingly the one Best Buy has the most stock of based on how many times it goes on sale during these random ass whatever amount of days game sales.

Speaking of Duty Calling of War World II or whatever, isn't the Activision deal "suppose" to be done by next week or am I making up random dates?

Wouldn't be surprised if Saints Row or Gotham Knights are part of that sale. $10 would probably be my buy price for Gotham but I'm not sure I'd pay anything for SR.

It got extended to October now.

The Gameflip addiction is real, lol. I bought New Super Lucky’s Tale, Huntdown and Legend Bowl within the last week or so. In other news, has anyone had trouble updating the Series Controller firmware? I’ve been trying to update my Lunar Shift controller to no avail.
I think I buy a .75 game a day on GameFlip. lol Today's game of the day was Mail Mole. Also eyeballing Fruit Adventure, which I'll probably make tomorrow's game.

By the way, if you like RPGs, there is a 50 game bundle of Kemco RPG's that is being sold for around $15, regular price for this bundle is $200.

Bought the bundle for 12,50 the other day with a voucher...already had 11 of the games, however I only paid for 5 of them, the rest came with Gold or from Giveaways. And the "paid" ones came from Gameflip as well..soo still a good deal =P

MS/ABK extended their merger agreement way out to October, but the CMA set a deadline for them to issue a final report/decision for 8/28.

And the CMA are the ones holding the deal up.

Assuming all goes well the deal should close late this month.

However, the CMA stated in their sworn testimony to the CAT that they would try to issue an updated provisional finding on the ABK deal this week - And that obviously hasn't happened....

That's a really good deal on the RPG bundle, I have never used GameFlip though, always to nervous to buy codes for other regions with the thousands i've spent on games on my account.

Are you allowed to sell GameFlip codes to other users? Because I can't seem to get into my account at the moment, and I would much rather pay GameFlip's three dollars for Otogi than Microsoft's TWENTY dollars. If anyone would like to help me out, it'd be appreciated, and you will of course be reimbursed.

Saints Row isn't a great game. But worth it at $10 I think. I paid $15.

On Playstation at least there was a bugged trophy that just got patched.

Forza Motorsport is unable to get split-screen working on Xbox. Not getting co-op to work on Halo Infinite after it being a staple of the franchise for the last two decades is unforgivable. And now with Baldur's Gate 3, shaping up to be one of the best games in video game history skipping xbox due to the devs not being able to get split-screen co-op mode working on the Series S and countless other games skipping Xbox entirely... I truly hope Xbox goes back to the drawing board and NEVER releases another Xbox Series S ever again! I didn't spend $600 on the World's most powerful console to have an entire generation crippled by an underpowered machine. This is ridiculous! If they wanted a cheaper console, they should just have made a disc-less Series X for $100 cheaper like Playstation did. The world's richest company and they can't hire some competent engineers? ENOUGH!

What makes you think Larian can get split-screen co-op working on Series S when Xbox OWN first party studios can't do it? Baldur's Gate will be coming to Playstation August 31st but not Xbox. That is a fact. And for once this has nothing to do with Sony moneyhatting the game.

The problem is that Series S only has 8 gigs of ram. Even the steam deck has 16 gigs of ram. That is how they are able to get BG3 working on a handheld like the steam deck but not Xbox. Anybody who's ever built a PC understands the importance of having more ram.

Microsoft's only option is to stop forcing parity between Series X and S. They did it with the Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Wait until people finally find out that teraflop has been used as a marketing gimmick and does not accurately tell how powerful your hardware is.
The Series X is more powerful than PS5, but both consoles are close enough that it just depends on which console developers spend more time optimizing for which is usually PS5 since it has more users. PS5 uses higher clock speeds but less CUs, Xbox has lower clock speed but more CUs. This is like the intel duo cores vs quad cores from 2007 all over again. Many duo cores were able to hit higher clock speeds due to having less cores. It took time for game developers to take advantage of the extra cores in Quad core CPUs. Nobody would take a dual core over a quad core nowadays and even PS5 Pro will have more CUs in the future if it ever comes out.

Every company uses marketing gimmicks. Sony lied about the power of the SSD. They said many of their games would not be possible without the power of their magical SSD and yet it magically works on last gen hardware or even regular old mechanical harddrives when their game comes to PC even Ratchet and Clank.

Well, if you really know anything about actual computer hardware you would know there are big differences between minimum specs and recommended specs.

I am sad that only Nintendo seems to care about split screen and couch co-op gaming.

Yeah I'm not sure why Microsoft decided to go "wide" with more CUs. I guess they didn't want a beefy cooling solution like the PS5 if they were go with higher clocks. I always thought the extra CUs were meant for some scalable Azure stuff since they were betting big on cloud gaming, like using idle Series X boards for some extra computing power for non-gaming applications (machine learning?) that could take advantage of GPU resources. Maybe that's what happened with the queues for cloud streaming? Either they winded down the servers to lower costs or reallocated the resources to something else.

I really hope Microsoft can flex their additional CU advantage but I don't think it is any time soon. I love Mark Cerny's developer-first approach to the design of the PS4 and PS5 to make development easier. (Warning - armchair dev rhetoric) This Xbox gen reminds me of the PS3 in some ways - hard to develop for and puts the onus on developers to really extract as much juice out of it rather than Microsoft providing good tools to extract that power. I think it was last gen where I read developers loved the PS4 tools over Xbox One's but I'm not sure what devs are saying now for Series consoles.

I applaud Microsoft for going with the two console approach and I have no doubt they will continue with this approach next generation (just based on the naming scheme). There's just going to be some major growing pains for now until Microsoft can get their tools sorted out or developers tune their engine for this "scalable" approach going forward.

The lack of RAM in the Series S was super short sighted, especially since RAM prices have absolutely cratered since the consoles launched.  I don't think feature parity should have ever been a strict requirement.

Baldur's Gate 3 looks like it turned out to be an all time great RPG.  It's going to take a lot of GOTY votes away from Zelda.

It's three years until the next console generation, man. Three years. People can't live with the Xbox Series S for three more years? Nintendo fans went from 2006-2012 with a regurgitated last generation system, and the world did not end as a result.

I'm sorry, I'm on Team Withered Technology here. It's way more important for me to be able to afford a game system than to ooh and aah at it. The $220 I spent on the Xbox Series S says it's an awesome game system.

The series s is a great value and is good for what it it, but it’s acting as a bottleneck. I’d gladly pay more money to have access to all the third party games that can’t run on a series s. We are missing out on the potential GOTY because the XSS can’t handle it. This is only going to make more people switch to PlayStation.

People buy Nintendo for the low spec “fun family” games. People buy Xbox for the specs and “next gen” experience

And I think you should do more with less, so more players can be a part of gaming with less money. I recognize the bottleneck argument, but that doesn't seem like so much of a problem on Steam. Indeed, some games will not run at acceptable speeds on my older computers, but on my third gen laptop, I get good performance out of the 2D stuff, and fair performance from older 3D titles like Ultra Street Fighter IV. On my fourth gen desktop with a modest GPU (a GTX 970 with 4GB of RAM, which I understand is pretty small by today's standards), I haven't found much of anything in my library that I can't play.

It's an old machine, but Steam doesn't drop some arbitrary wall in my face saying that I absolutely cannot play these games. They're still compatible with my computers; they just may not run all that well, or may need to be run on lower settings. I'm willing to accept those compromises if a genuine effort is made to make the games work on older hardware, and I'm willing to accept those same compromises on the Xbox Series S as long as the cuts aren't too deep.

If developers can make Doom Eternal and the Witcher III work on the Nintendo Switch, they can make Baldur's Gate III work on the Xbox Series S. I'm unconvinced there's anything about this game so revolutionary that it's beyond the scope of the S on a fundamental level. Will it look worse, and perhaps run worse? Sure, but the core of the game could be preserved, even if the frame rate and graphics take a hit. The Series S and X are supposed to be scalable anyway; the S needs less horsepower because it outputs to 1080p instead of 4K. If you just own a 1080p television set, those added details would be lost to you even if you had an X.

tl;dr Gamers shouldn't be excluded from the hobby because they can't afford a five hundred dollar game system. Microsoft understands this; why doesn't anyone else?!

Sure. In theory you’re right. But it’s the developer’s call. If they deem “it’s too much work with not enough of payoff to optimize the game to run on series s” the end result is that the bottleneck is preventing XSX owners from playing the game. If Microsoft were to drop the requirement of requiring all games to run on both, then there wouldn’t be an issue. But as is, with the end result being XSX owners missing out, it’s an issue

Developers are lazy in general when it comes to performance. They don't want to optimize their code because that would require some effort. The Series S has more than enough power for the developers to work with it, but it is easier to just code against the latest PC hardware which is pretty much beyond any of the current gen consoles. These developers probably complain about the lacking hardware in the PS5 and Series X as well.  I remember back in the day of the Atari 2600 developers had to work with far more limitations and they were able to program some games that are still fun to play today.

Me personally I don't really care about the latest hardware and fancy graphics. I am happy playing the XBox 360 Geometry Wars game on my Series X/S.  About the only graphic intense game I play is Forza Horizon 5 now and then for the heck of it. The graphics are nice, but it's more about just driving around and exploring for me than anything else.

I do feel that Microsoft has a lack of focus of late other than Gamepass. I am not really sold on the subscription gaming thing, but I got in during the first Gold conversions and I have been keeping it going using rewards points.  Not sure how long I will continue with Gamepass or XBox if things keep going the way they have been. I don't feel any love for Switch or PS5 either. I don't really get excited about new games anymore other than remasters of old games I used to play a lot back in the day. I was bummed that Rise of the Triad remaster did not release on consoles like it did on PC recently.   At least Quake 2 was a pleasent surprise :)

It's the split-screen co-op gameplay part Larian Studios is having trouble with. Some of Microsoft's engineers from the Xbox Advanced Technology Group are giving them a hand and the game will launch on Xbox Series X|S, albeit later than on the PS5.

The alternative would be for them to drop that feature altogether (perhaps adding it at a later date) and having it launch at the same time as on the PS5.

Neither scenario is ideal. It's a choice between facing backlash for the game releasing later or by it lacking a feature.

Yes, because those engineers were able to work their magic with Halo Infinite and Forza 8. It's never the Series S hardware limitation, it's always those lazy developers.

Even if BG3 does end up coming to Xbox in 2024 how is that acceptable? What if Larian can't get co-op to work on Series S at all, what happens then? They have made it abundantly clear that it is integral to their game. I don't buy the lazy developers narrative. Larian have been working on BG3 for 7 years. I don't call that lazy, I call that dedication.

Xbox as a console maker should have made making games easier for developers, not harder! If Microsoft really wanted to get the Series S in as many user's hands as possible then they really needed to eat the cost and include more memory in the Series S and made up the cost through game sales instead of crippling an entire generation of games.

This now opens up a whole other can of worms. What if the Coalition can't get co-op to work in Gears 6? What if features were cut from Starfield due to not having enough memory in the Series S. What if Perfect Dark is in development hell because of the S? What if the reason Starfield and Redfall can't get 60fps working is because of the S? How is any of this acceptable? People blamed the the lack of co-op in Halo Infinite on the incompetence of 343 but it's clear something else is going on when Turn 10. arguably one of of Microsoft's best studios can't even do it.

Did Larian recently announce that the Xbox version has been cancelled? Because AFAIK it's just delayed indefinitely until they can get the game working well on Series S.
No, I've seen the director say that while the game was never officially announced for the Series X (which I'm not sure is correct), they fully intend on a release for Xbox. In their blog post this week and an interview they say all PC patches will be included on PS5 "and beyond".

What makes you think Larian can get split-screen co-op working on Series S when Xbox OWN first party studios can't do it? Baldur's Gate will be coming to Playstation August 31st but not Xbox. That is a fact. And for once this has nothing to do with Sony moneyhatting the game.

Microsoft's only option is to stop forcing parity between Series X and S. They did it with the Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
Larian are very dead set on split-screen, and I would say 343 was not, considering the hard drop for Halo 5. I would also classify Larian as a competent studio, though they rely on iteration over time. I could not say the same for 343. Technical blunder after technical blunder, with their past mistakes like MCC only being solved by hiring new developers or outside companies and having them do it.

I can't really speak about Turn10, but I don't think they announced split-screen for this Forza. At they very least, they don't have an extremely embarrassing video of their studio head saying that all future titles will include the feature.
https://youtu.be/lNVDVHzhlU8?t=18m2s

I think the best option for BG3 probably would have been to release without split-screen at all, and then patch it in later, hopefully not botching it like 343. Next best is to drop split-screen on Xbox, which I'm not sure the company is willing to do. I would say limit the co-op, like a tether or something, but that is probably a big undertaking compared to cutting it normal optimization.

Parity between 360 and One is not a comparison that is useful, this was never promised or even implied, because they were truly two separate generations of hardware. There were only a handful of games that actually nailed both platforms, stuff like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Titanfall, while a lot of "cross gen" games were disastrous ports down to 360, like Dragon Age Inquisition or Shadow of War.

A more useful comparison would be One and One X. As far as I'm aware games on these platforms managed parity of features, aside from resolution, framerate, and general performance as expected.

I'll give you possible cut features for Starfield, though knowing BGS I think they probably planned with the Series S limitations in mind, or were possibly willing to launch their game running badly on one or more platform targets. I doubt framerate can be blamed on Series S though, framerate and resolution are 100% allowed to defer from Series X. None of BGS or Arkane's modern games have launched with 60 FPS in console. They all got them later from stuff like FPS boost, or didn't have it until a port, like Skyrim. They're fine with and used to 30 FPS.

We also have heard the general reasons why Perfect Dark has been in development hell, and it was largely personnel and management garbage.
