Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-05-21
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

I was wanting a 2TB Series X, but not like this. No regrets on my recent SX purchase - keep the box in Xbox!
No regrets with my Series X purchase either. I don't even use physical media so i would gladly give up a disc drive for more internal storage but at this point I'll just stick with what I have until next gen.

I just got my first JFY offer. 35% discount on Jedi Survivor. Not sure why anyone would buy it since it's coming to Game Pass via EA Play unless you really just can't wait.

On principle, I feel strongly about having the choice to use discs, but in reality, 95% of my purchases of uses are digital.

If they had to abandon backwards compatibility with an architectural change to ARM, though, I may end up focusing on PC gaming in a decade.

No way they are going to abandon backwards compatibility or legacy support. I can't see it happening.

Apple already has legacy support down with Rosetta 2 on macOS with their ARM-based M-chips. Microsoft just needs to dump a ton of money on their Rosetta equivalent to make sure this goes smoothly.

I'm just glad it gave us something to tee hee and be excited about in all honesty.

Microsoft is definitely going in a direction that is less and less interesting to me. Seems like they are only focused on boosting the streaming service and disc less consoles to run the streaming service.

Watching how TV/Movie streaming services are now constantly bumping up costs and removing more and more content, it makes me fear for the future of Gamepass. It'll become more and more unaffordable and then without it, you'll realize you can't play online and don't own any games.

People are already freaking out about whether or not the Switch 2 will have backwards compatibility or if they will have to rebuy their entire library all over again. I think people are too used to carrying their digital library with them. Nintendo did have back compat with the Gamecube and Wii / Wii U in the past.

Xbox giving up on backwards compatibility would be an unmitigated and monumental disaster so I don't think it will happen. Phil Spencer has said numerous times that he believes in game preservation.

Sadly this is the future. Is anybody really still crying about no longer being able to go down to the local blockbuster to rent a game? Nothing is stopping you from purchasing your games digitally and owning them instead of subscribing to game pass if you prefer. Again this is no different than buying an album or subscribing to spotify / itunes and having a huge catalog of music to choose from. Pick which ever model works best for your needs.

Nothing in the court documents concerns me (except I really want that Oblivion remaster). Microsoft has so many great first party games in the pipeline that that and GamePass are gonna make me happy for a long time to come.

It's more about owning long term. While rare, we've seen "owned" games/apps removed from download. The obvious complaint about games being removed from sale. A service eventually going away entirely like the Nintendo eShops. It's best for us if physical sticks around as an option for as long as possible.

Discs are obsolete and outdated because most games are constantly updated all the time. Never mind if a game ships needing a day 1 patch.

Have you guys seen mk1? You have to install disc 1, insert disc 2, go back to disc 1 to finalize install and then you need a 40gb patch to start playing. And make no mistake, mk1 will be getting a shit ton of updates.

At this point we really should be advocating for consumer rights to legally back up the games we own as well as protections so we aren’t locked out of paid content whenever these corporations decided to find new ways to ban us.

How legit are all of these leaks? Digital only Series X with better controller Holiday 2024? New Xbox Console in 2028? All those games getting remasters? I know Phil asked if gamers wanted MS to have a controller like the Dualsense and most of us said yes please so that makes sense. Odd that they had all this info more than a year in advance all ready to go and this easily leaked.
I'm hoping they're not, or at least simple concepts. I'd skip a refresh if it looked like that and honestly isn't even warranted considering how good games look now. As for haptic feedback: please NO. All it does is increase the cost of the controller for some garbage I turned off day one of the PS5. Innovate in game design; not gimmicks. That's Nintendo's domain of nonsense.

Still waiting on Microsoft to let me play the games that I own that aren't on Game Pass on the cloud...
My guess is that this is the direction they are going, and this is how they maintain “backwards compatibility”. No need for the same chip architecture in future consoles if the plan is to just let customers stream their previous generation games through cloud.

I Mean does anyone enjoy the PS3 streaming to console that Playstation+ has?

No spoilers, but I'm near the end of Starfield.  It's been a fun game, but I'm at a place where I don't need more side stuff to unlock more things to keep in my inventory.   I'm losing interest in the story after you learn what's up with the artifacts.  They have a few reveals that relate to events before the start of the game and just seem like they don't matter at all.  Was I supposed to be shocked? Because I don't care enough to be shocked.  I want to see how it ends, but the factions and character quests have been the highlights so far.  I still like the gameplay and have enjoyed the experience as a whole.  I feel like Fallout is the same way.  The story just gets you through the world and isn't the main attraction.  Skyrim did well with the main story IMO.

I'll be done this week and see what's up with NG+ (though I have an idea what that gimmick will be), but will be jumping on MK1 later this week.

As for the leaks, I think it'll be good in the end after they see so many people saying "eww! digital only?!".  I'd rather a better 4k drive that does not skip on some movies.  And fix atmos dagnabbit!  I think the PS5 having not as bad atmos may have got them to look at it.

So I had planned to play Starfield for at least two months, which is about how long Skyrim took me to 'beat' but I must admit the game is coming up way more shallow than I had thought and I think I can pin exactly why. Since this game has so many worlds to explore and since NG+ was obviously a huge focus of development, I think the game is actually smaller than any previous Bethesda game in terms of content. I'm now level 120 or so and have completed 3/5 faction questlines at least once but I was shocked to find out that only 5 factions exist, or 'major city' storylines in essence. That's roughly half what Skyrim had to offer out of the box in terms of guilds to join or major plots to play through.

What of sidequests? So far there have only been a few that I'd even qualify as interesting or overarching with the vast majority just presented as 'activities' aka fetch quests. I'm also finding that a lot of them just focus on somebody is in trouble and needs my help, which gets painfully old fast when nothing they can offer me is of any interest when I have millions of credits and get better exp just smashing build 99 items on a workbench.

Even outposts took a major downgrade in terms of offering, since there are no constraints of where they can be built leading to very plain options. I stopped playing Fallout 4 around the time I was able to build a fort and never ended up completing the game for it by comparison, just kept building.

Starships are just a simple task of min/maxing until solved and you're done forever really. I put together a build that kills entire fleets in just minutes and has so far not come close to capacity in terms of what it's hauling so I consider it complete.

So now I'm left with questing that feels almost done already and the option to just explore planets for the sake of scanning. Resources are pointless since anything can be bought from the starter town so additional outposts aren't required unless I want to play the 'resource tycoon minigame'. I don't.

With all this said, I'm shocked it took less than 3 weeks to consume essentially all that Starfield has to offer when even a boot up of Skyrim right now would be at least a month long venture. They leaned way too hard on NG+ to be that eternal source of replay value but set themselves up for failure with how it wipes all but your character exp and change. Todd recently said that endgame mechanics might not be for everyone, when what he really meant was it might not be for anyone. The huge backlash regarding how NG+ is designed begs the question WTF they were thinking and goes back to my original thoughts when I learned about it.

IDK, Lies of P is installing now and I think I'm done with Starfield for a while which is sad considering I thought the game had way more to offer at first blush.

VUDU doesn’t require me to subscribe to watch my movies online.

With the new Gamepass model, they need to free the online play. If I could play online for free and just buy my games digitally, I would never subscribe to Gamepass. The only reason I did recently is because the 3 year conversion was still working. No chance do I pay $15+/month for Gamepass.

I think this is different because music/movies have universal formats/codecs that can be played on many devices. Video games (especially console games) are not guaranteed to work on any platform other than the platform it is purchased on.

Physical vs digital, my favorite recurring debate topic on CAG where nobody’s opinions are changed.  Time is a circle.

Just gotta throw it out there since it's leaving Game Pass, Moonscars throws out a ridiculous amount of backstory and mechanics from the get go to the point where I'm pretty confident I'm not playing the game to it's fullest. With that all said, it's a very good Metroidvania. Bosses are fun to murder and the combat system with parrying and dodging is allot of fun (so long as you're not surrounded by enemies). Little over an hour in, but yeah I'm enjoying it.

Man, my opinion changed after XBox One/PS4 generation where I realized I hate moving and am totally fine picking games from my couch without changing discs. Only thing keeping me getting physical still are the deals and the collecting (gotta get my big stupid collector's edition for weeb games), but the game collection these days definitely leans more towards digital than physical. Microsoft fun bucks, Gameflip and Dell Rewards also ones to blame for setting me on this course.

My opinion has slowly changed to being more digitally based (with the exception of Nintendo - where games hold their values).  I used to buy games cheap during B2G1 or sales and then trade in and sell to GS or on eBay/Facebook.  I put in a fair amount of effort to play through things quick, trade my items in and then move on to the next thing.  This always put me in a spot to rush through things and never feel like I could truly slow down and enjoy them.  I'm now fine waiting for a cheap sale and just buying something digitally so I don't feel the pressure to re-sell it.  I also really like having a lot less physical clutter.  There are still plenty of 360 games in my collection I never got to, which will just collect dust and take up space unless I get rid of them (more work/time).  Now I just put things in my wish list and let the deals come to me (don't even bother shopping through weekly sales that much any more because I know what I want to play and wish list it)

My biggest issue with the Game Pass model right now is that with the inevitable season passes on every game, I ultimately end up buying it anyway as the cost of a complete edition is usually cheaper than the stand-alone DLC.  I have no doubt this will happen to me with every Bethesda game, which almost removes any benefit to me other than the opportunity to play something day 1.  I still get some benefit from a lot of the smaller titles (enjoying Maquette right now for example), but I will have a tough time if the day ever comes when I'm paying $20 out of pocket every month for the service

So any good deals on trade ins for consoles? Might get a second X before it discless. Got a Scorpio and a Day One the kids aren't using so much because loading takes forever (it does).

Probably best to ask in the GameStop thread since they're the most tuned into the promos. All last gen machines are pretty low now.

The new Series X is scheduled for November next year if the date doesn't get pushed.

If they could come up with some kind of program where you could sell digital games, I would buy more of them. Even something like trade these two digital games and you get this brand new one for free or whatever.

If they do a Fallout 3 and an Oblivion remaster then why the hell is Fallout New Vegas not listed here. Yes it is not Bethesda proper so maybe wouldn't be on this list anyway. But that will be annoying they have already performance boosted for Series X and then remaster these, but leave poor old FNV patrolling the Mojave as just backward compatible only.
What makes it even crazier is that Xbox also owns the people that made New Vegas (Obsidian) so they're both under the same roof.

Honestly at this point, I'm inclined to believe that the rumored beef between Obsidian and BGS is real and BGS has enough pull to not let it happen.

I’m a lot more open with digital than I used to be, mainly on Xbox. Mainly due to MS rewards and it being able to fund a lot of my purchases.

My main concern with going all digital is what about the discs you already own? If they come up with a way to “transition” the physical games you own to digital copies, I wouldn’t mind. Or if they just had an optional additional disc drive

Are people actually viewing things directly on x.com?  Every time I open one of those links, it redirects to twitter.com because it doesn't embed (and I get the warning that I'm leaving CAG), though it seems the site still has trouble properly embedding tweets (though it might have to do with people not stripping off a question mark and everything after).

Ever since Twitter changed their URL to "x.com" my links are no longer being embedded in the CAG forums.

In other news, the reason why Yakuza Like a Dragon is a timed Xbox exclusive is the funniest thing I've read all day. My head is still spinning trying to make sense of this.

I get that. But when I click on an x.com link in a post, it goes to twitter.com. It's like for me, x.com doesn't exist as its own site, just a redirect to twitter.com.

Yes the link from x.com redirects me to twitter.com also but bardockkun just posted a link from twitter in the previous page and the tweet was embedded. I think if you link from a mobile phone it still embedds from twitter.com.

Are you using the X app to post / share links? Just wondering where the x.com URL is coming from, if it's not in the browser.

As much as I want another Obsidian Fallout, I do think it's largely a case of scheduling. As Bethesda's purchase was finalizing, Outer Worlds 2 was being approved, Avowed was in development, and smaller projects like Grounded and Pentiment were in motion.

On top of this, many of the top New Vegas devs are kind of scattered. Josh Sawyer seemed burned out after Pillars of Eternity 2, Chris Avellone is likely gone forever even if he came out on top of his controversy, and John Gonzalez is at Guerilla Games.

I'm using Frefox on PC. If you share a link from x.com and post it, that same link then redirects you back to twitter.com.

But if you use the x app on mobile to share a link it still uses twitter.com.

Ah, ok, that's where the x.com URL is coming from. I just copy the URL from the URL bar in Chrome on PC, so it's always twitter.com.

I buy discs for the resell value. I can buy a game for $70, finish it in 2 weeks and get $50 back. If consoles ever go all digital then they lose the only advantage they have left over PC gaming.

XBOX getting GYRO aiming will be nice. I play all the consoles, so don't take this as a slight against XBOX, and it is nice how the Switch and to a lesser extent the PS5 lets me easily fine tune a shot by moving the controller. I had a moment playing Starfield where I tried to move the controller to fine-tune a shot but realized there was no GYRO aiming. I had just beaten Tears of the Kingdom and then Horizon Forbidden West back to back before starting Starfield so my brain had to readjust lol.

Seems to be an error by either the court or FTC. Microsoft provided links to the court for the redacted and unredacted documents. Microsoft does not have the ability to upload documents to government websites, only the government does.

I didn't save a copy of the PDF, but the document itself had redactions. The problem was the files embedded in it didn't. I could tell something was odd, though, when I saw the file was 187 MB. Much too big for the few pages that were available in the viewer. Maybe whoever put together the document assumed, dangerous as that can be, that whoever would review and redact would know enough to check for attachments.

Yeah these subscription services are a bad value in the long run. Microsoft has been tightening the screws lately with Game Pass by getting rid of $1 trials, lowering the amount of monthly rewards points you can get and raising the price by $2. I bet they'll raise it again after the ABK deal goes through and it will be a more significant hike because Call of Duty day 1 on GP will not be cheap. How will people feel when it hits $25 a month?
