Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

Damn, I knew the console was huge...

Hopefully MS will bring out the money bags again for the sequels.
Why? Some internet epeen competition? Like I said above, EA choked on this one. They have the buzz and the hot new title that could have rivaled CoD in sales, but they're now settling for (at best) Halo & Gears* numbers since they cut their user base in half over a moneyhat. Makes me wonder if they know something about the game we don't. Maybe hesitant that it could be as good as people expect and think the moneyhat is the easier way to go. i.e. if it turns out mediocre, the moneyhat was the best decision.

*not that those numbers are bad, but they're nowhere near CoD numbers.

Yes....as I stated in the quote. Those games, even with Rockstar having made them, did not sell as well as another well known Rockstar game that goes by the name of GTA.
Not the same comparison though. Those are three very different games than GTA. Titanfall is basically Mech of Duty. i.e. CoD with a fresh coat of paint and a new name.

I wish Major Nelson or someone would come out and clarify if Xbox One supports MP3 custom soundtracks.
Don't recall the exact wording but I'm 99% sure it's no, because I use it a bunch and remember getting annoyed by the lack of support around e3. IIRC, you can do custom soundtracks but only through their $10/mo Zune pass.

Wtf, is that a house.
A dumpster for all the unwanted kinects.

Wow, you're hilarious. The Tonight Show might be interested in your services.

It's so unwanted the inferior version sold millions as a separate piece of hardware, GTFO.
It shifted millions, as an accessory for a console that had already sold multiple tens of millions. You know what performed about as well? Wii Fit boards.

Just because Microsoft managed to sell themselves some Kinects doesn't make it the next big thing. While the accessory was able to get some decent traction, the novelty had worn off somewhat, and sales had fallen off somewhat by the time the XBox One was announced. We have yet to see if basing a large chunk of the XBox One around the Kinect is going to work out like they wanted.

If they can just get developers to support it properly, it will have been worth it. If not, it will be an anchor around the neck of the system.

LA Noire and Max Payne, sure. I'll give you those. Red Dead is wild west GTA. And it had a stronger userbase than GTA IV did and still didn't sell as well.

Wow, came back to CAG after a long hiatus to see if I could find any Xbox One info beyond rumors and find a hostile thread......guess CAG hasn't changed  :twoguns:

Butthurt much? It was a joke. Lighten up Francis.

Exactly. How many of those millions of people that bought Kinects were so won over they can't wait to get their hands on K2.0? 10%?

I have one collecting dust. Fool me once...

Still mostly rumors, MS is keeping quiet. Titanfall is exclusive (T2 will be multi-plat). There are some resolution debates for the launch lineup. Not sure what's actually confirmed though.

I have a Kinect, and I've already gotten a decent amount of use out of it. Picked up all three Dance Central games at very reasonable prices. Those titles are great as an exercise regimen, they really get the blood pumping.

But not every game could or should be Dance Central. In order for the Kinect to really shine it needs to be utilized in other ways, that really take advantage of what its capable of. And we simply haven't seen that happening from most developers.

I'm still waiting to see a proper voice-controlled trivia game that uses standard controllers for the buzzers. Why haven't they produced a proper Jeopardy game for the Kinect? The Kinect could be great. Instead it's still in gimmick territory.

I understand there are lots of people who don't want Kinect but also lots that do. My opinion is that the new version is better than the novelty of the first. Just my opinion.

In terms of technicality, I think it is provably better than its predecessor. There is no argument there. The new version of the Kinect is going to be more capable than what came before. What's really important is whether or not that potential is going to be utilized properly.

A big deciding factor for the first few years of the XBox One is going to be how well the Kinect works for voice commands. If they manage to pull that off properly, they will be able to leverage it as a selling point to a very broad audience. That sort of functionality feels like the future. And in many cases it can significantly improve the user experience. We'll know more when the XBox One actually arrives and we start getting first-hand accounts of use cases.

Also, there is the problem that a lot of those features can be easily co-opted by the PS4 for less money. The PS4's Kinect-equivalent is going to be available at launch, will sell for cheaper, and is apparently going to be able to utilize voice commands as well. The challenge for Microsoft is that their solution has to perform better, much better.

I don't regret getting my Kinect, but I wasn't blown away.  I'm indifferent with it's inclusion with the X1 but I understand the persistence that it is included in every box.  To me, the first Kinect was worth it for Fable Journey and Gunstringer, both insanely under-appreciated games that the so-called "hardcore" crowd should have enjoyed.  Beyond that, my kids and I had good times with K-Adventures and the double-fine games.  All in all, I can't complain.

And in time for Halloween, Haunt is a really cool game that made good use of the Kinect.

What happen to that lady that took over Mattrick's job? We haven't heard or seen from her once and she is suppose to be leading the xbox division...

it takes awhile for most bigger companys for the higher up people to not be fully in the job for awhile. Its possible we see her near launch i would guess would be good way to introduce her.

True. Just going on what Vince said, but he was adamant about T1 being on PS4 and EA pulled the rug out. Could very likely happen again.

Agreed. I have no doubt K2.0 will be better but they still haven't given us a reason why it's needed. Replacing my universal remote isn't a reason, IMO. It will be great for dance and exercise games, but there are a helluva lot of people that don't give a rats ass about those. So right now it looks like those uninterested in Kinect can view that extra $100 as a downpayment on Titanfall.

Yup, K-Adventures and K-Sports made some good memories the Christmas when I got it with the family. I have played a lot more times with K-Sports too, a few more gaming sessions with Adventures to grab the achievements.

Don't forget Child of Eden, a game that could be played either way - this is how you do it - but was a totally different experience when you used the Kinect for the controls.

K-Fruit Ninja was also good and was a great party game imo.

For the people getting both PS4 and XBOX ONE, I know there are some people out there doing this, what version of the cross-platform games are you getting?  I was leaning towards the ONE, but after the 720p vs 1080p debate, I'm leaning towards the PS4 now.  I suppose the controller and friends matter also.

PS4 version unless reviews show parity. I agree with you on the controller. If there's a game that utilizes the rumble triggers, I would consider that.

Gears of War ran its course on 360, says Microsoft

The Gears of War series helped define Xbox 360. As Xbox One fast approaches, Microsoft Game Studios VP Phil Spencer suggested that they'd like to see more Gears games going into the next generation, but that he thinks they should reexamine the direction after Gears of War: Judgment's middling reception.

"I want to find a great Gears game, and I thought we did a good job with Judgment but I don't think it hit the level of quality we saw in the previous games," Spencer told IGN. "I think review scores showed that, sales showed that, and I really think that we need to take a step back with Epic and think about--I don't want to call it a reboot, because it's kind of an overused term--but think about where that franchise goes and how to expand what it was."

He said the series "did kind of run its course on 360," and that its story doesn't support as many games as the Halo series. That is, at least in its current incarnation. He suggested they would need to "expand the universe and what people are doing" to make it viable for future games. "Maybe take it more gritty, I don't know," he said.

One way to inject some new life into the franchise could be to find a new team. He says he'd "love to have that conversation" with Epic, but that Gears has been put on the backburner for the studio. Judgment was developed in part by People Can Fly. "Trying to find another team to do that game I think is possible, but you'd want to make sure you did that very carefully along with them to make sure we have the right thing in place," he said.

Controller and friends matter most to me. Personally, if it's an FPS game it'll most likely be on X1. I've spent the past two days playing with DS4 and I still like the 360 controller better. What can I say....I'm a fan of the offset analog sticks. Otherwise, almost everything else will be on the PS4.

I really wish I understood the love for offset sticks. Always found it less comfortable. To each their own.

As for Gears of War, that kind of sucks. Never played Judgement, and I don't know why they would make a series decision based on that one considering how different it sounded. Plus, was it even the same studio? I thought People Can Fly did the majority of the work on that game, not Epic?

good the last game was awful and i also think it ran it's course

Big Gears fan and when I found out that Epic wasn't making Judgement during development I ignored it ever since. All the little touches were influenced by Cliffy B with the Gears franchise and since he's gone as well as a few other higher ups I don't see anything anymore for Gears unfortunately.

Ha! I guess I got the last laugh after all. After years of non-stop bitching, the anti-CQC/Gnasher crowd got exactly what they wanted in GoW3 and J which was yet another watered down third person CoD clone. All at the cost of alienating the rest of the fanbase and putting the entire franchise in jeopardy. Be careful what you wish for indeed.

gow 3 was pretty good but not great like gow 2. I enjoyed gow 2 and 3 more then any recent cod game.

Just stopped by my local target after work and they already have Xbox One demo kiosks up. No controller though so you can't play any games.

RE: Gears of War, I'm of the opinion that Epic isn't the same Epic today as it was a few years ago and the creative forces that made 1 through 3 great just aren't there any longer.  I kind of agree that the series ran it's course and they'd have to reboot or do something pretty drastic to keep it as a significant franchise.

Went to the Xbox One Tour today. Played : Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Ryse, Fifa, Lococycle, Skylanders, Crimson Dragon, Max and the Magic Marker, and Forza. Lots of fun all and all. Only weird bit was seeing the sign that said "No pictures" as the DJ said to post pictures and videos to social media then see him for free stuff (MS points/ money, Gold time, etc). I'll be honest. Probably going back tomorrow.

i doudt i get that many games tommow seeing it's the small version the test drive one which from photos of events in my area from today looks like it might just be K.I and forza five two games im not getting rigiht away. But will be nice to just feel how the system is so close to launch.

Hey Basil, what of those games stood out the most? Any surprises or letdowns?
Dead Rising 3 : Suprised it kept up the framerate despite the endless number of zombies on screen. Had some trouble getting in to cars and using a lawnmower (rather than picking it up) but i think thats because the system i was odd had an issue they messed with after I was done. The game dropped to like 1-5 fps for a few seconds, but i watched others and my friend didnt have that issue so I think it was isolated.

Killer Instinct: Played at the smaller truck show that came by and was hoping for an added character but no luck. It was still fun and I noticed pretty quick this time that this game is anti-button mashing.

Ryse: Single player area mode. Game was a lot of fun. Chose a God to worship at start that gave difference abilities (knockback, added damage, etc). Gameplay was a bit different than I expected. Slow but not lagging or anything just the pacing of battle at times seemed like you wanted to flow between enemies at the right pacing for best results.

Fifa: Never played a Fifa game, but needed 9 games played to get stamps for the free X1 drawing. Glad I played though. Suprised at how solid the gameplay was and how fun the game was.

Lococycle: Steering took some getting use to but the game was fun. Didnt ended up playing to much of it so Im not sure if it is a game Id play for the long hall.

Skylanders: Owned the original and thought Id give it a try. The swap figures add a lot more funthan I expected.

Crimson Dragon: This game was suuuper disorienting for me. seemed like I was all over the place and simultaneously couldn't dodge anything. I heard some guy say it was his favorite game so maybe I just sucked at it

Max and the Magic Marker: Had to leave just after getting past some platforming and dieing to what I thought was a harmless frog who blew up and killed me.

Forza: Played Forza at the mini truck stop show that had KI. Seemed OK. Played at this and the game was amazing. Seems the controller at the other show were broke because the trigger feedback this time was intense and added a lot to the race.

At the small show they had here a few weeks ago it was just Forza and Killer Instinct, but I hear they added Ryse since then. At the very least you get to try out the controller that feels really good (to me). My friend that went with said he was thinking of buying the system based on the controller. The games all made him more interested. I think Im getting close to convincing him to buy it at launch.

Thanks, Basil!!  Every little bit of non-hype/real-person insight is appreciated.

I'm most interested in Ryse and KI, so it's good to hear those were decent.  It seems like Ryse is getting better press now.  I was a big Panzer Dragoon fan, so I really want Crimson Dragon to be good.  We'll see on that one.

I kind of want a racer to buy at launch, but I've never been much of a tuner/sim racing fan, so Forza might not be for me.  But, every video of NFS Rivals I see the police siren is blaring and drowning out any other music, SFX or dialogue.  It seemed super annoying.  For those with Forza experience, past games or who have played 5, how "sim" is the franchise?

Ill try to get more mental notes on Ryse, and KI and I'll give CD another try, maybe ask a worker for tips.

Im not Ill get Forza as Im not a big sim racing fan. Got one of them for 360 to test the water and I like pretty much everything but the racing.

Rivals looks really fun to me. Part of that might be that I want to play on the cop side. Also I think the ads usually focus on the cops so that might be why the sirens are louder. Also might want to look at The Club for a racer even though its not out til 2014.

Think you won't have to plunge down $$$ for a bigger hard drive because you aren't going all digital next gen? Think again...

Next-Gen Games Will Fill Our New Consoles' Hard Drives In No Time

ku-bigpic.png

The PlayStation 4's internal hard drive is 500GB, and if you buy and start playing just two of its launch day first-person shooters this month, you'll already be using more than a 10th of the drive. Welcome to a somewhat different era of console gaming.

Above you'll the see part of the back of the box for Call of Duty Ghosts on PS4. It requires 49GB of space on the PS4's 500 GB hard drive. Killzone: Shadow Fall requires 45GB.

The PS4 requires users to dedicate hard drive space to all games they play. According to the console's official FAQ:

This isn't just a PS4 thing. As we reported back in February before the console was even officially announced, the Xbox One also requires that all games be stored on its hard drive and run from there.

All PS4 Blu-ray Disc games must be cached to the hard drive to ensure a smooth gaming experience. However, certain titles may not require you to wait for the game data to be fully cached before starting gameplay. In order to start playing disc-based games, users will need to insert the game disc into PS4 just like on the PS3 system.

Like the PS4, the Xbox One will launch with a 500GB hard drive. And also like the PS4, some games on Xbox One can be played while they're installing. We don't know which games, and we don't know how long players will have to wait to play CoD, Killzone or any other launch game on the two consoles.

The hard drive installation requirement on these new machines is likely in place for performance. The consoles can pull data more quickly off a hard drive than they can off the Blu-Ray discs that PS4 and Xbox One games will be sold on. Running games off the hard drive should also keep the Blu-Ray drive from needing to spin much and make a lot of noise.

The need to store games on the systems will force PS4 and Xbox One gamers to adopt a PC gamers' sense for balancing what's installed and what isn't and therefore what is or isn't available to play immediately. If a console can only fit 10 or so major releases, which ones will you keep on there—especially if installation times prove to be even just a few minutes longer than is ideal?

The PS4 hard drive will be swappable, so users will be able to give themselves more storage. The machine won't support external drives.

The Xbox One hard drive will not be swappable, but it will support external drives, just not at launch.

I still won't need a drive since I just delete game installs after I beat the game and sell it off.  Will be a major issue for people who collect games and want to keep everything installed for sure though.

I usually do that as well, though there are definitely times when I would probably own enough games at one time to need a bigger hard drive with the required 30-40gb installs in addition to downloadable games and any digital media stuff as well.

I only play one or two games at a time so I doubt I'll ever run into any issues. Downloadable games I usually delete after beating too. PS+ complicates that by downloading things way in advance of playing, but I've taken to just "buying" them and canceling the download and then just downloading one when I actually want to play it immediately. Otherwise the HDD gets crowded with a bunch of free games I'll mostly never get around to playing anyway.

Yeah I don't think I've ever had more than 5 games installed at the same time. In the last I've always had the most recent NHL, and COD. Along with 2 or so other games I don't play as much as those. After the 3 games I buy at launch I don't know when I'll even buy another game until NHL comes out. Maybe Titanfall if it ends up being as great as the hype machine is.

I've had like 10 games installed at the same time. Just because it takes so damn long to do. I won't mind to delete stuff with this coming generation if it installs faster.
