Alright, it's going to be a great second half of 2007 for Guitar Hero fans, as we get the first Guitar Hero themed release this summer with Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s and the next full installment, Guitar Hero IIII, will be coming out this fall.

For the time being, we've got nothing better to do than talk about the announced tracks for these games and speculating on what bands and songs should be there, too.

As for Guitar Hero III, not much is known right now. Red Octane has mentioned that they're focusing on getting AC/DC, Metallica, and Led Zeppelin into the new game, but we'll have to wait to see if they're successful or not. Queen of the Stone Age is being rumored as the first confirmed band on the game's tracklist. As for features, Red Octane mentions wireless controllers and online play as two of the big features for this year's game, though I haven't seen any mention of those being specifically for all the console versions or just next-gen. Hopefully, E3 will provide much more info on Guitar Hero III's initial tracklist and feature set as the fall nears.

This just in (7/10), we've got some Guitar Hero III tracks!:

So right now, we have two master tracks and the rest are covers. It doesn't look like the ratio from GHII will change much for Rock the 80s. If you didn't, know this is the last Guitar Hero game being developed by Harmonix, as they'll be moving on to the highly ambitious Rock Band, which they're working on with MTV and EA. There's supposed to be around 30 tracks for Rock the 80s, which we're already near the halfway point at 17 tracks right now.

Rock the 80s is currently a PS2 exclusive and with Guitar Hero III being the big focus for Red Octane on the next-gen systems, it wouldn't be surprising to see it stay that way, though DLC is always an option.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll be updating info on both games as it comes in, so be sure to check back often for the newest info. In the meantime, I'd like to see what bands or songs you guys are hoping to see in both of these games.

fucking sweet! Great KISS, Alice Cooper, Tenacious D, Weezer, Beastie Boys, Fog Hat, Heart, and Living Colour songs. I'm surprised. Looks like the master tracks to covers ratio could be great this time if the initial list is a sign.

I'm glad to see that PS2 owners will be getting wireless guitars, as I was wondering if it would only be the next-gen platforms that get them. It looks like we're getting a special guitar just for us, the Kramer guitar. Looks like Red Octane is preparing to make more money with removable faceplates, though.

Here's the first preview of Rock the 80s, at least that I've seen.

A bunch of new screens here.
Also worth noting, on the Gamestop website they give 80's Edition a July 17th street date and a mock up (dear God I hope it's a mock up) of the cover. Eitherway a part of me is dead knowing that's Pandora...

http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=281741
It looks like it's real. I couldn't care less about the cover, as the game itself is most important.

Just a minor nitpick, though it also looks like the look of the game as a whole minus the main characters are all being re-used. Eitherway, i'll bite, more guitar loving goodness.

I was hoping for some "Cars" on the 80's GH game. One of my favorite bands from the 80's, "Candy-O" would be a great guitar driven song to have in GH.

I hope Made in Mexico appears in GH3. I love both of the previous songs from I&II. Its already shaping up to be a hell of a game! Oh and we also need more Queens of the Stone Age.

Our hands-on time allowed us to play most of the full track lineup for the expansion, and while we can’t tell you about the unannounced songs, we were impressed by the ones still to come. A couple of old favorites even surfaced amongst the classics. Despite the apparent easier difficulty compared to the finger breakers of Guitar Hero II, the tracks on 80s seem a lot more fun to play. Fingering can be intricate and at times a bit frantic-–but nailing the big solos makes you feel like you’re actually up there, chafing in your leather pants and leading the band.

Those bastards. I can't wait to see what the rest of the tracklist contains.

Looks like not much of a difference, though second page of the IGN preview has pics of the Les Paul and it looks pretty awesome. Also note it has a removable neck so that kinda makes ne believe a possibility of a double neck guitar?
Since Harmonix is now owned by MTV and hard at work on Rock Band, Neversoft wasn't given access to the code from previous Guitar Hero games. That means Guitar Hero III is being built from the ground up.

I found that to be the most interesting part of that article.

Evenflow! I fucking cant wait to get my hands on GH3. And the best has yet to be announced. And roughly have of them will be masters? How awesome is that?
I found that to be the most interesting part of that article.
Could that mean that Rock Band's code will be based on Guitar Hero's?
Could that mean that Rock Band's code will be based on Guitar Hero's?
I don't know, but I couldn't see Rock Band/Harmonix straying too far from the style of presentation they've always used. I was surprised that Neversoft doesn't have access to the GH code, as Pachter was saying earlier about the Harmonix vs. Guitar Hero issue was that Red Octane owned everything about Guitar Hero (guitar design, HUD, and supposedly code), but I guess they don't.

Well it might have been fun to play this song, but really it was the song I was least looking forward to.

I know I'm late to the party, but I finally beat GH II on Expert. I went back and 5*'d Easy and Medium too and I'm working my way through Hard.
80's edition needs more:

Bryan Adams
Springsteen
Tom Petty
Yes - "Owner of a Lonely Heart"
Journey
The Cars
Whenever I think of Journey I think of tight sleeveless leopard shirts and keyboards glued onto walls...

The trailer says the game features "We Got the Beat"...I haven't seen that one confirmed anywhere else, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for pointing that out, I must've missed that.

Added to the OP.
Has the price been confirmed yet? Its $50 on many sites and that seems like too much for 30 tracks.
I don't think so just yet, just listings on various sites (besides TRU) that list it at $50.

Ok, 80's edition is turning out to be really cool. Sorry to see "I Want Candy" dropped but its not too big of a lose. Getting "We got the Beat" more than makes up for it. Hopefully they will include some INXS.

That song has a nice bassline.

That's a very blurry shot of the back of the pre-order box. These songs appear to be there:

The Vapors-Turning Japanese
Iron Maiden-Wrathchild
Anthrax-Caught in a Mosh
Scorpions-No One Like You
Winger-Seventeen

And some other, unidentifiable one.

According to Wikipedia, it's 38 special - hold on loosely. 6 more songs left to be identified.. this is starting to kick some serious ass.

fuck yeah it is. I remember reading in the EGM preview for GH2 a year back that they had an internal debate about whether to use Madhouse or Caught in a Mosh. Looks like we get both now. fucking metal.

Can't wait to see how hard Microsoft and Activision try and ass-pound people with these songs as Guitar Hero III "track packs", can't wait to watch how many weak-kneed, spoiled/addicted dipshits 'drop trou' and gleefully bend over. Hell, they'll probably bring their own red rubber ball on a chinstrap!

fuck that, I won't buy whatcha tell me!

guitar hero is an awesome game...keep coming with more games!! i think a game should be made with some of the newer songs on it like hinder or marilyn manson but of course i would like to see some of pantera's music on one of the cd's. even some of the older songs by guns n roses, metallica, skid row, poison, jimi hendrix, janis joplin and many more. just an idea for the creators..change the singers up some not that many ppl can take there focus off the dots long enough to notice the singers but after a while u start to notice that there are only one female and one male singer on the game...it's just an idea though....keep rockin!!!!!

Marilyn Manson and Hinder?

Wow.....just wow....

After watching the Transformers animated movie, i'd kill for the theme by Lion. Meaning literally i would die from nerdy joy just playing that.

Holy shit, I can't wait for this game. I actually have Killers (Maiden) in my CD player right now by coincidence. I might prefer another song off that album (Murders in the Rue Morgue?) but Wrathchild is really good, too. Hope it's a master track, cause otherwise the singer won't sound anywhere close.

(Also I really like those other 4 songs :) )
