I just saw that and wow, 2100 MS points is the price for this arcade.
Edit: Well they changed it to 1600 MS points.

As much as I wear my PA fanship on my sleeves, that's a really hard damn sell. Especially when it should be on PC as well, and thus you could get it on sale at some point.

Plus, I remember being very underwhelmed with the trailer from a while ago.

It does have Ron Gilbert working on it - who is a god, and who shall take his place in the Parthenon when he passes to the next world - which means the merit of the game is already leagues ahead of lots of other games.

But still, that's a lot of cheddar. I'll have to hear some reviews first.

Holy fuck on a fucking sandwich.

That article says 2100 MS Points=19.99, but don't 1600 point cards = 19.99?

Also, let me remind you that this is the first part of an EPISODIC GAME. Yowzers.

I imagine the continuing episodes will be cheaper... but, yeah; that's a lot of points.

I'm not a fan of Penny Arcade, so I'm in the clear.

I wonder if Penny Arcade is setting up to do something self-serving, on their blog, where they *bangs fist on table* demand that the publisher lower the price point.

I think the 2100 is a typo, because that would equal $26 or something, right? It's a very odd number.

The article states "AKA $19.99" because the writer is a moron.

My guess is it was supposed to be 1200 points, which would be $15.

For that price, it better be freaking awesome.

Also, 2100 points is equal to 20 Euros. I know the UK gets 2100 points cards and not 1600.

I bought Bookworm Adventures for $20, and I considered it worth every penny, even though it had fewer hours of gameplay than this. But being a short game, I loved playing it over and over again. I foresee the same here. I am definitely going to pick this up.
Yep, it's 1600---the article in the OP was edited.
So...$20 for a game that i can never resell if i grow tired of? I think i'll save my Mr. Jackson for GTA4 or something ;)

Wow, lots of haters in here. :) I think many of you are failing to factor in that this is not your typical XBLA game. Not that I know how many hours of play are in there, but everything I've seen that that in terms of scope and whatnot, this is a "real" game, maybe even more than say, Rez, IMHO the next XBLA game closest to a retail game. They're just going with a digital distribution model. There are no other full-fledged RPGs on XBLA, either (I love Puzzle Quest but I wouldn't count it in this category). Unless this turns out to really suck or be a 3 hour game, at $20, I'm hopeful it'll be worth every penny (pun intended).

I think it'll be worth $20. First off, I've been a PA fan for years. I get the humor. Plus, I love turn based games. Lastly, I'ma collector, so I rarely get rid of games. This is a no brainer, as long as it plays good. I'm pretty stoked for this one.

I like the idea of digital distribution, but I'd have to see a lot more about this game to decide if the 1600 pts ($20) was worth it. As it stands, I'm saving for the Capcom games that are coming soon.

I love Penny Arcade, but weren't they the very ones who complained about Arcade game prices? This is said to be the first installment in a series of games. I think they'll shoot for three games ($60) and a retail release, so I'll wait for the compilation - if not just pass on the whole series.

It IS an RPG kind of game. If it isn't short, features decent gameplay and allows you to carry over characters into the next episode (ala .Hack games), and very likely, it might turn out to be rather decent.

In the new issue of PC Gamer they played through the beta version and it only took them 6 hours to finish it. I'll wait for a price drop, I don't really want to spend 1600 points on a 6 hour game.

Keep in mind if played right you can beat Halo and others in 6 hours...
People still give a damn about about PA?

Seriously, I grew out of video games in High School myself...

yeah, me too.

Yeah, I haven't played a video game since the womb, tbh.

Even though this is the first part in an episodic game I expect longer play times in RPGs then other genres.

I'll be getting this, but hopefully there's some clarification on the price point come Monday from the PA people. I saw the trailer for this at last year's Comic-Con and it looked fantastic. I'm a huge PA fan and love their humor. To me, it is very hard to do what they do on a consistent basis and they do it heads and shoulders above the fray. Just look at the longevity of their comic. It's not like PvP which turned to shit and became an aimless mediocre comic.

Why? What is this fascination with how long a game is? No one says, "that new movie is only 90 minutes, I expect at least 2 hours before I'll pay to see it" or "that book is barely 300 pages, I won't even bother with anything less than 500 pages."

I can see wanting to know the average play length just to get an idea of what sort of time investment you'll need to have free to play it, but as a buy/pass decision making factor? Ridiculous.

The game is the length that it needs to be. I would much rather play 6 hours of excellent gaming than 10-12 hours of mediocre gaming brought down because someone dumped in filler crap to lengthen the game. Portal was one of the best games of last year, and it was only 4-6 hours. It's still worth every penny of its $20.

If Penny Arcade:OtRSPoD offers $20 worth of gaming, I'll buy it. Please stop bringing down the quality of gaming by clamoring that they be filled with time filling crap before you'll buy them.

Damian, quit saying things that make total sense. It's a well-known and widely distributed fact that if a game doesn't take you 60 hours to beat, it's not worth the money.

I mean I can finish a game of Tetris in 4 seconds and get a score of 16. What the fuck is that about? It's all about that bullshit, that's what.

We need XBLA RPG games bad.....so this might be worth picking up.....a year from now when it drops to 800 points.

I have a feeling that the PA game on XBLA is going to sell really bad and the PA guys will whine and bitch that XBLA is a joke and 360 owners only like Halo and Gears of War.

But really. It's episode 1, so just wait till episode 2 comes out to get it. Or wait till all 3 come out in a bundle. This is CAG you should be willing to wait for the price to drop on this.

And if it's really a episodic game, then the next one should come out soon right? (Yeah right, episodic games are a freaking joke, just look at Sin)

I think, simply, it is because a game costs $60. If I am going to pay full price, you're damn right I'm going to consider the length of it.

Well said. For me as well , as long as a game is good , I really don't care how long it is. I'd even take a really short game with lots of replayability vs long games where you beat them once then toss them aside. I consider $20 to be a good price point for short games anyway. Heavenly Sword probably would've looked far more appealing at 20 or 30 dollars wouldn't it?;) Reviews probably wouldn't have bagged on it's length at that price either IMO.

When I was reading your post , the first game to jump to mind when you mentioned filler crap was Assassins Creed.

In any case , I like PA , I've been intrigued by this game , and if the reviews are good I'll probably drop the $20 to download it. If not , I'll either wait for a possible price reduction or a compilation as others have suggested.
I think, simply, it is because a game costs $60. If I am going to pay full price, you're damn right I'm going to consider the length of it.
True , but only if your actually paying $60 for your games. I almost never pay more than $50 for any game anymore unless it's something I HAVE to have now. Even then , some of the games I paid that much for I either didn't REALLY pay that much for (Super Mario Galaxy) or got a hell of a bargain (Halo 3 Legendary for $60). Otherwise I wait for it to get to $30 or less , barring games that never price drop to begin with (Atlus).

I can admit that a few years ago I would be agreeing with you and if a game was short that I wouldn't be as interested in paying full price for. But I've gotten cheaper and lost most of my free time. I can't invest in games like I used to (Especially sad for me since I love RPGs , the biggest time sinks of them all:cry:) so I'd rather have a bunch of 10 hour or less games that I can actually make it to the end of , rather than one 30 hour game that might take me over a month to finish.

Why is there so little press for this game? I'm really looking forward to it, but I am a fan of the site/comic and turn based RPG's. I just thought there would be much more talk and hype.

Anyone else excited?

I am but I have so much to play in my backlog atm that I feel almost overwhelmed which is a "good " thing mind you but leaves me hard to get psyched up for anything really :/.

Well, Gabe announced on their site that it releases next week, which seems completely out of the blue. The only reviews I know of are some he mentioned in a previous post that basically said "someone gave us a low score and someone gave us a high score, which I think is great because it's like the love and hate relationship we get with our comic."

Looking at the trailers, however, I'm just not all that interested in the game. It looks good - matches the comic's style completely. And I'm even willing to bet the battle mechanics are pretty solid. But the trailer makes it look so generic - run around, parse out some menu commands, kill enemies, and move on.

Maybe there's a lot more to it than that, but right now I'm not convinced. I guess the idea is that fans will be drawn into the pure atmosphere of the game. I don't know.

Now, Ron Gilbert did work on it, who is a god among men, so the saving grace might be that pedigree alone. But given the price - 1600 points for an episodic game - I'll damn sure wait for some reviews that tell me whether or not the game seems worth it. And this is coming from a pretty big PA fan.

I was interested, but I saw 1up impressions and they said the gameplay is pretty slow and boring. That added to the 1600 point price tag means that I won't be getting it.

Considering how brutal these guys have been to various games over the years, no doubt their own game will be perfect.

The 1600 point price tag may kill it for alot of people, but it's definitely hurting them only based on what people already expect from the arcade. I got the feeling this is a complete game and much more than your standard arcade fair and the XBLA is just a digital distribution for it. People are just so used to paying 800 points for stuff that they're like "OMGZ NOT PAYING 1600 POINTS FOR ARCADE!!", which is a dumb mentality. XBLA is not just for shitty arcade ports.
