Just heard on CNET: Buzz Out Loud

Brad Bishop

CAGiversary!
The PS3 was outsold last month by the GameBoy Advance.

I'm beginning to think the end is near for the PS3. I think it may be the Atari 5200/Dreamcast of this generation. The Nintendo GameCube had better consumer appeal.

I like my PS3 and, even if all of the PS3 stuff dries up tomorrow, it still makes a good combo-machine (PS2/DVD/Bluray).

Sure, the PS3 could pull out. We could also have 17 hurricanes over the next month so that the folks who orginally predicted a 'very active hurricane season' will be right on the money. Both are pretty unlikely at this point.

Looking forward to some more demos, trailers, and wall-paper Thursday. Sony has done nothing but dropped the ball on this one every step of the way.

Not surprising. 360 stole the show because of Halo, and with all the rumors of the $400 40GB model that were rampant last month, even people who wanted a PS3 were unlikely to buy one last month.

Still, I wouldn't be that doom and gloom on PS3. It'll survive. It'll finish 3rd this gen, but it will do ok and there will be a PS3 that's hopefully priced reasonably for the start and gets Sony back in the game.

As far as this gen, I'm covered with the Wii60 combo.
mod lock this please before it gets to out of hand. This is a topic created for trolling.
Agreed. It's like the OP is asking to get banned if he keeps posting these topics.

I've avoided saying anything about it for a while just because you get that 'run on the banks' kind of deal out of it.

Really, behind the GameBoy Advance? I didn't go look up the figures - I took CNET's word for it. It could have been a flat-out lie, I suppose.

I suppose you could argue that with all the high-dollar purchases going towards the 360 that it was bound to knock the PS3 down. Still, behind the GBA? I'm not even sure if they're still on the shelves of my local BestBuy and Circuit City. The games are there - I just can't remember the last time I saw a GBA display.

Posting a desenting view about sales figures is asking to get banned or trolling?

Do you not ever look at NPD threads each month and see sales figures?
GBA has kicked the PS3s ass for many months.
Though PS3 started to beat it for a couple months in a row.

Will GBA punch back?!!

Don't listen to them dude. I have a PS3 as well but I am nothing but dissapointed in the damn thing. If HDdvd ever happens to win out, which looks unlikely at this moment, the PS3 is done. Sony still has the time and money to make corrections, but eh.

Full numbers from that link...

Video game hardware overview:
1. Xbox 360 — 527,800
2. Nintendo Wii — 501,000
3. Nintendo DS — 495,800
4. PlayStation Portable — 284,500
5. PlayStation 2 — 215,000
6. PlayStation 3 — 119,400
7. GameBoy Advance — 75,000

Luckily I bought my PS3 for BR otherwise I would have sold it. I am playing one game(Oblivion) and don't see me buying another game for it for a LONG time. Nothing coming out anytime soon that interests me.

I don't normally pay attention to the sales figures. I don't normally care. It's just when I heard them talk about the GBA beating the PS3 I thought, "Come on! How much worse can it get?"
I don't normally pay attention to the sales figures. I don't normally care. It's just when I heard them talk about the GBA beating the PS3 I thought, "Come on! How much worse can it get?"
Let me tell you something, don't ever listen to CNET. They've been spreading FUD against PS3 for the longest time. Last month was NOT a good PS3 month saleswise in the U.S.

However, you just assume that since PS3 may be selling the least in the U.S., it's doing bad everywhere, but that's not the case. PS3 IS in 2nd place in Japan and selling all right there. Everywhere except the U.K. (mostly GB) and Australia, PS3 is selling the second most on a monthly basis (especially in Spain, Germany, etc.). The main reason why developers have to support PS3 is because the Xbox brand just isn't too popular in Europe while the PS brand is.

Regardless, PS3 isn't going anywhere fast. The GBA STILL sells in the U.S. because:
-Too many casuals in the U.S. feel every handheld is a Gameboy (the Gameboy name sticks, kind of like how everyone use to refer to a game console as a Nintendo, or how people refer to a tissue as a Kleenex).
-There are still tons of casuals (Grandparents, parents, etc.). who have no idea what the Nintendo DS is and/or don't know it plays GBA games. PS2 continued to outsell 360 for a very long time until the recent pricecut and Halo 3. The U.S. market just tends to be behind at times on changes.

Also, there are many people out there who barely know what the PS3 even is. How many times do you see PS3 advertisements these days on TV???

I'll tell you about CNET, they once said:
PS3 is moderate to strong this holiday here.

Another article claiming Sony is as desperate as they look here

And there's more articles. Last thing I'd do is trust CNET because they can be all over the place, full of biases which can be good, or can be bad.

Also, you are going WAY too far calling PS3 a failure. I can bring up an article saying PS2 was a failure last gen, and looked what happened. PS3 is even doing better than what PS1 started out doing. And actually, if you were to compare worldwide sales between the 360 and PS3 during the same time frame of release, they are VERY close. The difference is that 360 has been out for longer (so it has more games and Halo 3 is oh course big), and the Wii just has a lot of hype behind it (causing it to sell like crazy).

And no Sony didn't drop the ball you retard. The biggest problem with PS3 is price. There isn't much of a way for Sony to reduce the costs. Those who say blu-ray is the reason PS3 is expensive are delusional, since it costs $8 for a blu-ray diode. The Cell and RSX themselves cost quite a bit to make. There's a whole lot of other pricing I can get into.

You are also spelling doom to PS3 too early. PS3 has now been releasing MUCH better games as of late, such as Folklore, Ratchet & Clank Future: ToD, Eye of Judgement, and some multi-platform games. Uncharted, Haze, Time Crisis 4, etc. come out later this year. PS3 looks to have the best version of Call of Duty 4, which is a HUGE plus. Most all the great 360 games the rest of the year (except for Mass Effect) are on PS3. PS3 looks to have a kickass 2008 lineup with LittleBigPlanet, Infamous, Resistance 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, White Knight Story, Disgaea 3, Gran Turismo 5: Prolouge, God of War 3 (rumor), Home, Socom Confrontation, Killzone 2, and many more. SCE themselves have 100 published PS3 games IN development, which shows they are committed to PS3.

I rather you get rid of something you're not happy well than spread your horrible disease of doom and gloom around the Sony forum. I'm perfectly happy with my PS3 owning 17 disc based games along with 14 downloads. Outside of maybe 2 downloads and 2 disc based games, I'm 100% satisfied with what I own. Ratchet & Clank Future: ToD is by far the best game this generation and cannot be found on Wii or 360. Go download some demos and I guarantee you'll find something you like.

HD-DVD won't be winning the format war anytime soon, because they'll never get Disney, Fox, and Sony, three really great movie producers (who cares about Universal IMO).

A GBA cost about $70.00 that is $10 more than a game these days. So of course they will sell more GBA systems. These posts are flawed and stupid.
A Toyota sells more cars than Bentley does that mean Bentley is in danger of going away?

And actually since the price drop in the UK the PS3 has been outselling the 360 at least 2:1.

If by Toyota you mean PS2, and Bentley Dreamcast, then yes! I'd say so.

What is a Dreamcast? Sounds like a fishing simulator.

For our slow readership (TheDuck)

PS3:GBA
Bentley:Toyota

I expect PS3 to explode even more when GT5: Prologue (the 4th sold more than every 360 game in Europe) and SingStar comes out.

Sarcasm is lost on you. Herpes you say? That is harsh. Dreamcast was not all that. Go play with your VMU and be quiet.

Internet sarcasm is best detected when you're familiar with the way a person posts and their tastes...judging by your previous analogy which completely sucked and collapsed on its self when you said the people who don't see it that way are stupid, I didn't know if you were for real or not.

and herpes is not that harsh...it's just forever.

Herpes can be the gift that keeps on giving, the gift that is breaking out all over... the gift that... oh never mind..

...besides we all know the PS3 has nothing but FPSes in its library... :booty:

I think I'll be worried if the PS3 ever gets outsold by the Neo-Geo Pocket Color.

I second Let's Meow Meow. Easily the most thought-provoking, well-developed storyline in an anime game where you fuck bitches hoez dressed as cats.

Lolz, this is a funny thread.

Dreamcast died out way too early, and they were still pumping games out earlier this year. [/OTT]
Once and for all: The PS3 is not going anywhere. Sony is not going anywhere. Lock thread.
I've got to admit to being pretty amazed at the 'trolling', 'banned', and 'lock-thread' comments simply because I dare to question the viability of the PS3 given that it's competing with the GBA for last place.

Really, hardware-wise, it's got a lot going for it, esp. the BC versions.

You've got to admit that, in the marketplace, it's performance has been disappointing so far. They can lock this thread or even ban me if they like (I don't think that'll happen, I haven't said anything controversial except to the zealots) but it's disappointing performance in the marketplace doesn't change.

I don't really want to crawl through, "If Sony did this it'd be better." Sony hasn't done it and they aren't going to. They seem to be filled with the arrogance of, "You bought the PS2 so now you must buy the PS3." Other companies have done it (Atari, Nintendo) and equally pissed people off.

The worst part of all of this is that the PS3 is a great piece of hardware. I think it easily trumps the 360. I thought the XBox trumped the PS2. It's got a standard (non-locked) hard drive that any of us can replace. It uses bluetooth as opposed to some proprietary wireless protocol. It'll play PS/PS2/DVD/Bluray. You can toss your memory card from your camera right into the thing and see the photos from your vacation. It has wireless/rechargable controllers. There is a lot in that little (big) box.

When I go see the games on the shelves I see 'More of the Same II' and 'Nada Quest IV' (all at $60). I think that has to due with what Nolen Bushnell recently said which is that the current gaming market is racing for the trash (that goes beyond PS3 and into XBox360 and Wii). It's not impossible for there to be another Video Game Crash. I was around during the 1983-4 crash. It had a lot to do with, "more of the same," and "Crap Ass VII"-kind of titles.

Bright side: it looks like some games are finally hitting $20-30. Oblivion at $20-30 is a great deal. Need for Speed, the same - although I don't get the chick trying to tell me how to drive. What is she, a witch?

Ignoring the retread of a retread of the same old console argument, I found this bit...
FFVII: Advent Children (one of the best movies ever IMO).
...to be a big ol' bucket of sad. You really need to expand your horizons, Mana Knight.

You shouldn't be surprised. For years the Sony faithful have had a stranglehold on the throne and now we are getting our feelings hurt. Among the most sensitive of the Sony faithful are those that actually own a PS3. Their natural instinct is to defend/justify, by any means necessary, their decision to own a PS3. Hence the responses you've seen.

In a nutshell, it is impossible to debate Sony's current situation because most people allow their emotional or financial involvement to sway their statements/beliefs.

Okay... to summarize what you were saying... fuck CNET!, OP, and anyone else hating on PS3. After PS3 finishes up with HD-DVD, then we coming for 360, and Wii...

Lollerskates at the Sony fanboys. I don't see why people get so emotionally involved. It's a video game system, for fuck's sake. I can't believe the insecurities of some people. Sony will be in last place throughout this generation. Get over it. This doesn't mean the system is dead or will have zero games. The Japanese support will be there. You don't have to run around trying to justify your purchase. No really, you don't. Buy your games and systems, play them, enjoy them, and get on with life.

That'd be great if we really debated... most of the time it degrades into a toss-up between the extremes.. sort of like a fanboy tennis match.

But in the realm of opinion, the hyperbole (god bless the word-a-day calendar) of most thread-starters in relation to how things are going is merely to see if they can poke the trolls out of hiding. Few, if any, non-specific game or hw question threads result in anything other than a virtual pissing contest. I defend no console or company.... so anyone who's thinking I'm an overt apologist can just get bent. (it's funny... laugh.)

I'd love to discuss the marketing fiasco that is Sony's promotion of both the PSP and PS3.... Microsoft's got the marketing down cold... Sony seems to miss the point at every turn these days... Them's the cycles... next gen we'll be watching someone else botch a launch/marketing package... roll the dice for who... no one would've predicted _this_ outcome judging by last gen's results... anyone who did is like the person who believes they figured out "The Usual Suspects" halfway through it. IOW... a boastful load of crap. :)

I would love to discuss the PS3. It's a fine machine that's _very_ well built. But alas, there are too many extremes... so I just enjoy the fun and throw a few kittens into the pit and see who rips them to shreds first. :bouncy:

This is the internet... when has _anything_ been actually discussed? I bet there are raving fanboys/girls on the knitting forums! :D

So, let's poke the bears on the 360 -and- PS3 sides and watch the fun... I'll bring the popcorn... I kid, I kid...
