Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

Just finished up the OreImo2 OVAs.  Looks like they really did go with the LN ending.   But that ending really just ruins the whole series now.  Really wish they would've ended the anime right before it got weird like Bunny Drop or did an alternate ending.

This pretty much sums how I felt about the ending:

Also working on Black Lagoon, since I bought that DVD/BR combo Amazon had on sale last month.  Really enjoyed first season and going to start on the 2nd season sometime today.  Now it's making me wonder if I should order the Roberta's Blood Trail set before I finish the 2nd season.

Black Lagoon is awesome, I've been meaning to check out Roberta's Blood Trail. Sword Art Online episode 4 was decent, don't like that they keep showing how super cool and powerful Kirito is.  And One Piece is finally being interesting.

My Bakuman volume 20 arrived the other day, read first two chapters today. It's finally going to be over! Enjoyed this series quite a bit.

I'm finding the complaints about SAO really funny.  It's not really a story of the guy getting stronger (I've only seen what's come on CN so far), it's about a really bad ass character helping others out.  It's no different from Rurouni kenshin, One Piece, or many many many other animes, in that regard.   I was amused by
all of the lowbies trying to beat up Kirito while he laughed at them
.  It is essentially what an anime about a traditional MMO would be like.  High level characters being attacked by lowbies and laughing at them.

It's not like those at all.

Because those are actually good.

While I like SAO, I feel like Kirito is more of a Mary Sue than Kenshin or Luffy. He's extraordinarily strong, all the girls he meets are attracted to him yet he's socially awkward and largely oblivious. Kenshin and Luffy start off strong, sure, but are often severely handicapped in some way in the early going, then eventually have to work hard to overcome stronger opponents. This at least keeps the fights interesting.

I've been watching SAO on Toonami, and I can definitely see where the hate comes from. It's entertaining enough to keep me watching, but it really doesn't seem very memorable. Not much substance but somehow all over the place in storytelling.

I agree with this. I was really disappointed as I found most of the show to be pretty funny.

On another note, I started and caught up with Gatchaman Crowds, and I am absolutely in love with it so far. Such a wonderful cast of characters on that show.

So Miyazaki has pretty much given Hideaki Anno permission to make a Nausicaä sequel. Mainly because Miyazaki himself doesn't want to make it and because Anno has bugged him about it.

Thoughts?

I'd be there day one. Nausicaa is hands down my favorite anime theatrical film.

What do you guys recommend that's airing currently?

I'm already watching Blood Lad, Dangan Ronpa, Gatchaman Crowds, Gin no Saji, Shingeki no Kyojin, Uchouten Kazoku, and Watamote.

hey guys wondering if there is any info for us getting hellsing ultimate 9 and 10, kinda sucks not being able to see the ending. Just finished Roberta's Blood Trail, enjoyed a lot, makes me want to see more stories of the lagoon crew. I heard the anime is faithful to the manga, so theres no reason to get it to see any differences or more story.

Just finished up Birdy the Mighty Decode & Fate/Stay Night. Birdy's 1st season seems like it dragged on up until the last 2 episodes, while the 2nd season felt more streamlined and fast paced. Fate Stay Night was good, but felt like it could've cut some parts out. As some of the episodes added some unnecessary stuff that really didn't add anything.

Now working on Green Green and Spice & Wolf. Mostly watching Green Green just to mark it off my backlog. It's kinda weird watching Spice & Wolf after watching the Maoyu simulcast earlier this year. As Lawrence/Hero and Holo/Demon King are voiced by the same seiyuu and both shows main theme revolves economics.

All Funimation is saying is that "they're working on it". They've probably have been distracted on trying to acquire Bandai's old catalog than working out on getting those last 2 episodes licensed.

Just finished Sword Art Online and I enjoyed it. However the last 10 episodes almost ruined it for me.

Somewhat spoilers:

All the sex fetishes were contrived anime bullshit. I could've done without attempted rape and secret onee-chan love. Asuna was a strong female character and they completely destoryed her. And did we really need tentacles?

completely agree, I still have about four or five episodes to get through and I'm struggling to find a reason to keep watching. Just my opinion, which maybe will change if I ever get around to finishing it, but I think it would have been better to simply end it mid season. So far everything I've seen of the second half (I'm on episode 19 I believe) has been rather abysmal :whistle2:(

Currently on the 10th episode of Fate/Zero and I am really liking it so far. I've heard Fate/Stay Night is pretty bad relative to F/Z so I doubt I'll watch it.

I didn't think it was quite worth it. The action was good but the plotline was eh and the resolution was pertty boring imo.

Just finished reading Monster the other day, and I don't know what took me so long to read it, but holy shit is that a good manga. One of the most intricate and well thought out stories I've ever come across. I'd highly suggest reading it if anyone hasn't before. I'm probably going to move on to the anime next and see how faithful it is. I know Viz is re-releasing the series next year as giant omnibuses and I'll be all over those.

Now I'm really excited to see if Guillermo Del Toro can successfully turn it into a show for HBO.

You've invested this much time with it, I'd go ahead and finish it. It's not the worst thing in the world but it was a let down considering how good it started off. If anything watch it for Yui. I found her relationship with Kirito rather charming, but that's just the father in me talking.

Jaco the Galactic Patrolman is quite the quirky series, but Toriyama REALLY needs to let somebody else name his female characters.

Just finished watching Lovely Complex. Went into it with lower expectations as I don't usually like the whole comedy, romance combination unless it is well done. (e.g. Absolutely loved Toradora, Didn't like Love Hina at all)

I can say I was honestly surprised with how much I liked it. Had a great balance between the two. Recommended it if you're into that type of anime.   Now to move on to finish Steins Gate!

Just a reminder to anyone interested, Evangelion 2.22 is going to be on Adult Swim tonight. There's also going to be a "surprise" of some kind after the movie is over.

Probably an announcement of some kind.

Predictions!

1) One of IGPX/Megas XLR/Sym-bionic Titan/ThunderCats has been revived.
2) Highschool of the Dead acquisition.
3) Lineup is moving to before midnight.
4) Eva 3.03 is airing next week.
5) Blue Exorcist acquisition.
6) Cartoon Network/Adult Swim/Toonami themselves will start acquiring anime.
7) Return of Bobobo.
8) Lyrical Nanoha or Precure have been picked up.
9) Eureka Seven AO acquisition.
10) Madoka Magica is Toonami-bound.

Well, the surprise was the acquisition of Kick Heart.

In other news, some casting news for Pokemon: The Origin. Red will be played by Junko Takeuchi, aka Naruto.

There were a couple people complaining on twitter last night about how bad the animation was on it. Which granted, it was distracting. But like some pointed out, that's what happens when you rely on a budget through Kickstarter.

One thing that has been bugging me lately is Sentai labeling their releases as "Complete Collections", yet are missing the OVAs(and had a more than a 6 month window to acquire it). Ran into this problem with Mysterious Girlfriend X & Another. Seems kinda misleading to do that. Which I think is why Funimation stopped doing it for some shows and went with "complete xxxx season" instead.

So, I have been watching some Sentai releases lately and I have to wonder, are they using new facilities from the ADV days? It seems like the Sentai dubs have worse direction from the ADV days and have a number of technical issues like lines being a half second late and several reactions undubbed at all. Didn't ADV used to own its own studio?

Yeah, they still have their own studio that they use(could've sworn they have 2 studios). But I've noticed that for years.

Plus the way they encode their DVDs hasn't changed since the ADV days back in the mid-00's. As they seem to have a somewhat muted color compared to stuff that Funimation puts out or even Bandai did during their last few years. Which kinda tells that they haven't upgraded their equipment in a long time. Even Aniplex/NISA/Nozomi does a better job on their releases than Sentai.

I guess one thing that can be blamed on missing subtitles is that they're rushing out so many titles(that's why they didn't delay Medaka Box until the error was found out after they sold copies at Otakon). But it just seems like lazy QC to me.

It's not missing subtitles, it's missing dub lines. A character will make a big statement, and the character's shocked reaction will be missing.

Also watching Gundam SEED and SEED Destiny HD Remaster. I had forgotten how much recycled animation the show used. Also, disappointed that Perfect Strike had nothing more than a glorified cameo after all the in-show hyping.

And Durandal calling the Impulse a highly efficient Mobile Suit system? LOL!

Promo for the new HSD Kenichi OVA:

It seems like it's going to cover the Apachai/Elder backstory and give us our first look at Sho Kano.
