Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

Did Funimation ever release more than the 1st 2 seasons? Do they have any plans to release more?

Also, started watching bodacious space pirates and fully expected to hate it and give up after 1 episode. I've actually enjoyed the 1st 2 episodes and it seems like something that I'll enjoy all the way through.

It's not missing subtitles, it's missing dub lines. A character will make a big statement, and the character's shocked reaction will be missing.

Also watching Gundam SEED and SEED Destiny HD Remaster. I had forgotten how much recycled animation the show used. Also, disappointed that Perfect Strike had nothing more than a glorified cameo after all the in-show hyping.

And Durandal calling the Impulse a highly efficient Mobile Suit system? LOL!
Quick question: what's the difference between the OG version to Hd version ? Does it have new dialogue? added scenes?

There are one or two minor dialog differences but nothing major. A lot of footage from the TV Movies was edited in, some scenes were redone (moat notably Sword Strike in Episodes 3 and 4 and Nicol's death), the clip shows were junked (with the George Glenn stuff moved to the next episode), the 2nd and 3rd ending themes of SEED are replaced (though Find the Way does make 2 appearences), the openings have the Gundams model numbers and pilot names during the pilot/MS spotlights, the shot of naked Murrue in the openings was redone, a few shots of Shinn were added to the second half of the series, and there is a LOT of pimpage of Perfect Strike. Though Mu only uses it on Earth and doesn't really take advantage of the Sword Strike parts. Though despite showcasing the IWSP in the eyecatch, Strike Rouge still only uses the normal Aile Striker Pack in the final battle.

Sadly, most of the cases of recycled animation and the majority of the flashbacks remain in the show.

It's also apparent in the first episode that for the subtitles that all they did is reuse the subtitles from the DVDs Bandai released(timing and all). As the HD one has a remix of the 1st ED song, but the subtitles start about 30 seconds before any vocals(as original version started earlier).

Yeah, that's another thing with the HD, as some of the songs are changed or remixed. Like the 2 EDs mentioned above are swapped out. Fields of Hope(in Seed Destiny) & Seed's 1st ED get remixed(referred to as "retracks" in the credits).

Not sure if they'll license more. On a recent ANNcast, they hinted that Season 2 didn't sell well when asked about more of it coming out here.

Thanks. You just saved me from 30 + hours of re-watching G:S and G:SD

Halfway through Gyo. Read Uzumaki last weekish. Junji Ito is an interesting man.

Edit: Gyo was... horrifying.

Going through SEED Destiny HD Remaster...I think the biggest problem with the series is that they tried to make it a standard Gundam show about soldiers and their immediate superiors and completely ignoring the political side of things. Unlike other Gundam shows, we have several main characters who are politicians yet never have them actually doing anything political on screen. Durandal does some in the early goings but drops off later, Djibril just sits on his ass all day petting his cat, Lacus becomes a petty officer, and Cagalli gets kidnapped and even before then apparently had no political allies at all.

It also doesn't help that regular joes are considered one giant mass all thinking the same. Everyone living in Atlantic Federation territory are racist against Coordinators, all Coordinators hate Naturals, and we never see how anyone in Orb not named Todaka feels about being in the Earth Alliance. Never mind what ZAFT citizens thought about the Destiny Plan. Granted, they rarely do this in other Gundam shows, but again, the focus was on one particular group, whereas Destiny forced its 5 main groupings (Federation, Logos, ZAFT, Orb, and the Archangel) into 2 and a half groupings.

The story of SEED Destiny was just too large in scope for the production staff to shoehorn it into a standard Gundam formula.

I wish they would just hurry up with releasing more Liar Game, the art at first is bad but it gets better. And the story to me is damn good. That and Black Joke by Masayuki Taguchi.

Here's a clip from the new episode of the Code Geass: Akito the Exiled OVA

Decided to start trimming down o the anime backlog, and started with El Hazard:The Wanderers. The show doesn't nothing special at all,but is just a very fun and enjoyable show.It has one of the best villians in Jinnai who has probably one of the best evil laughs in a show.

Do they meet my quota of hot asian girls piloting giant machines? If not it can go sit on its hands pardon my language.

I must say EVA rebuild has broken my heart, totally raped so much of the story ='(
Haven't seen Movie 3, but this is how the story probably would have gone had Anno not been battling depression at the time. And had an unlimited animation budget.

i always hear many times that creators did certain things "because of this or that". and while i'm not saying that it didnt influence anything (only he would really know). but the connection, the character progression is completely rushed.

example: asuka shows no interest in kaji, this really played into her whole "i'm not a kid, i'm the best" character. n the scene where she walks into shinji's room. she's wide awake, the convo they have is kinda plain, it ruined the whole symbolism of his problems with and being 14 years old with a half naked girl next to you in the original scene.

sorry for a rant. i'm all for remakes and such, but why not make new scenes altogether then? they've used almost all of the character interaction scenes. i just thought it would have been better to fill in story gaps from the original then this rushed work. its cool, but not a masterpiece it could have been.

There is a reason it is called "Rebuild of Evangelion." Anno is...rebuilding it.

There also wasn't much room for Asuka's crush on Kaji with the shortened running time, especially since Anno wanted to include Mari in the franchise.

Sometimes Japanese companies doing English subs leads to funny errors. The latest GSD Remaster upload had "Calm down!" spelled as "Cairn down!"

Finished OG Evangelion and the 4 movies recently. It was...interesting...

I'm only about a third of my way through the manga and I have to say that I like the manga more. Judging from some of the comments on Rebuild, I'm not sure if I want to go down that route.

o_O If you haven't seen Rebuild, then what other 2 movies are you talking about? The OG series only had Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion.

Rebuild deserves at least one watch if only for the freaking GORGEOUS animation. Makes the Platinum versions look 20 years older.

Movie 1 plays out roughly the same as the pre-Asuka section of the series, minus the stand alones, though some details not revealed until the end of the series are dropped here, most notably Lillith. Halfway through Movie 2 is where things start changing drastically.

My b, you're right. In that case I've seen the entire thing. And yes, Rebuild looks great. Funny thing is that after watching the entire series in release order, the original ending makes more sense.

On another note, I read Ichi the Killer a few weeks ago too. Now that is one Very disturbing manga.

Yes Rebuild is worth a watch and even owning imo. I'm sorry to say but Anno is simply trying to milk the series for related sales. Which is very clear with the addition to Mari, who is simply stepping in Asuka's scenes. She only added a minor explanation to the lost EVA 5 which is mentioned in the first series.

He also cuts out a major fact about why these kids can pilot the EVA, which is pretty much a big plot. Then he skips over some of the Angels. Now you can say run-time, but wouldn't that hurt the point of making a Rebuild?

In the Second movie he already had EVA 1 start the next IMPACT, how? There is no explanation even in the third. This shows me that he was just trying to stylize this...series. Plus the reveals of Lilith, the Lance, and the last Child who should be the final Angel is revealed so early when there are 2 more films. Come on.

So you're unhappy because its different from the series?

This is a yes and no answer. It is not a full retelling of the series, its basically a gut of the same scenes. That is my problem. If it was a retelling (which rebuild sounded like) then it would be okay.

Before someone says "well you can retell a story with same scenes", when do we not stop and think about what directors and the like try to pass off to the fan base? I am sure everyone here has one series that they'd get upset about if they did what they were doing here. I'm not one to say no to change. Just don't come to me with a storyline thats 75% the same, replace one actor/character for another to simply add a new face to the scene and tell me it's a whole different story. Hope some one gets this lol.

Well, it's not as if Karowu arriving early is new. The manga had him arrive much sooner and even gave him classroom scenes and sent him out on a mission in Unit 02. That's what happens when you're as big an Ensamble Darkhorse as he is.

I can completely understand cutting out the filler Angels. They provided some world building, but in terms of the overall plot they added little.

And a large reason why the movies have such a different feel is that Anno himself is a far different person than back when he was doing the series.

True on point of filler Angels, however they are using the same prophecy "drawing" which is why they were so many to begin with.
Yes Anno is a different person today, but I also believe he felt influenced by those that made fun of his "inaccurate" science. The redraw of how missiles were now dropped on the Angel, no more sync battle, no more using the battleships into Angels mouth. Ka had plenty interaction in first series as they did hang out, this could've been a pass had not already brought in the lance. To me its already showing too much of what u know is coming.

But then he goes and adds boosters to Eva 2 when she drops from the air -_- and flight.

I hear Conan is doing very well since Funimation has episodes available for digital download (I know it's a top seller on Xbox Live). What are the chances this movie will be picked up?

Probably depends on sales of the S.A.V.E. sets and the Fujiko Mine series. FUNi has already said they have no plans to continue the series.

Part of it is definitely Anno wanting to add cool stuff to the Evas, though a lot of it was introduced in various video games and other spinoffs. He may also want to subvert the usual compilation movies anime usually does, which is likely a big reason why the movies have made a gazillion dollars, so much that they delayed Movie 4 to get more.

As for Kaworu, he had one episode and a couple scenes in Shinji's head. Pretty much every other Eva incarnation introduces him far earlier, some right from the start. It's only natural he would appear earlier in the movies.
