Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

Just google "video game market crash". It probably won't be as dire as the previous one, but it's true that the market is fairly saturated with stuff that threatens to fraction and marginalize the industry as whole. Ouya, Steam Machines, Tablets, etc. There's arguably too many options and again we are getting a glut of cheap awful software on the most prevalent platforms with the powerhouse platforms being to costly for all but the megapublishers to even dabble in. If there is a huge slide in the industry in general, the only one I see not pulling out is Nintendo, because that's all they do and I'm sure they'd be perfectly happy being the big fish in a small pond.

i could very well see nintendo either being a company that makes 3rd party for pc and home systems or just become a hand held company the 2nd option seems really possible.

Eh, really doubtful, unlike the other 2, Nintendo is just a gaming company. They make so much money that they can keep going on for awhile. It hasn't even been year 1 of the Wii U yet so id wait till 2-3 years to see how poorly or well its doing.

Man. This thread has me so excited for my Xbox One. What Microsoft's gaming division's profits are were it's main selling point. Can't wait for Nov 22 now!!

In other news, I have my Xbox 1, Battlefield 4, and my Turtle Beach X04's completely paid off on Amazon. I spent maybe $40 total out of pocket. The rest came from sites like swagbucks and bing.

Is anyone else getting the Turtle Beach Headsets for the X1? They are being released on the 22nd but Amazon has their arrival date as the 25th. I'm assuming they'll ship with my X1, but that would be annoying not to have them day 1

Going to try to focus on actual discussion about games here....

I have points set aside for KI and Crimson Dragon and have Ryse on pre-order.  I just sent a bunch of stuff to Amazon to trade in and now I'm contemplating what else to get.  I have a love/hate thing with the AC games, but I'm a sucker for pirate stuff.  ACIV might be interesting.  With games like ACIV, Watchdogs, CoD:G or Battlefield 4, have they talked about what platforms the footage they've shown is for?  It seems easy to get mixed between current-gen, next-gen and PC.  I saw at least one video of ACIV where they specifically said it was a next-gen demo and it looked pretty damn good.  I also saw one BF4 side-by-side comparison video between X1 and 360 and the 360 version looked pretty rough in comparison.

Killer Instinct is looking good.  I know only 6 characters at launch with 2 coming soon after kind of stinks, but I'm excited for this game.  Here is a pic of the official stick from Madcatz.  I'm not a big fighting game fan, but I may need to get one of these for that authentic arcade feel.

I'm hoping for an official wireless headset at launch. Kinda surprised there isn't one yet but maybe they are assuming of people want wireless they use kinect.

They are probably just going to let Turtle Beach make them for awhile I'd imagine...

Oh wireless. It is weird that there aren't any wireless headsets yet.

I'm going back and forth on what games I want.

I'll probably get both CoD and Battlefield for some online play.

Then I'm wondering how Ryse and Dead Rising 3 will turn out.

I also have my eye on Killer Instinct and Watchdogs.

Watchdogs, Killer instinct are day ones for me. MAYBE Crimson Dragon.

Well any doubts that Xbox One/Kinect is basically an ad machine have been put to rest, this is kind of gross frankly:

Xbox One's Top Marketer Brags to Advertisers About Kinect's Abilities
original.jpg

Microsoft's top marketer tossed a juicy hunk of red meat to his kind of people yesterday. While Xbox One isn't selling the stuff Kinect collects from your living room to marketers right out of the box, the capacity is there, and it could be the kind of game-changer that makes ad buyers swoon.

Let's remember that Kinect is no longer mandatory to the Xbox One's operation and neither is a periodic check-in with the Xbox servers, requirements that were walked back under a firestorm of gamer outrage. That said, many users will simply leave both utilities plugged in. And when a publication like Advertising Age—whose audience ain't exactly privacy-concerned hardcore gamers—says "Xbox One can essentially work like TV that watches you, bringing marketers a huge new trove of data," you realize why Microsoft wanted those requirements in the first place.

Mehdi, at the Association of National Advertisters' Masters of Marketing Conference, in Phoenix yesterday, said Microsoft can see whether people are paying attention to ads and evaluate how their bodies respond to them, according to a marketer who attended but asked that his name not be used in AdAge's report.

"It could have a big impact on pricing," he added. AdAge agrees: "If even a fraction of likely Xbox One users could be persuaded to share data, the technology could create the world's largest panel for measuring biometric responses to advertising."

Mehdi told the panel, according to AdAge that "it's early days, but we're starting to put that together in more of a unifying way, and hopefully at some point we can start to offer that to advertisers broadly." He called this "a holy grail in terms of how you understand the consumer in that 360 degrees of their life."

Kinect's ability to distinguish voices in a living room, notice if people are watching the screen or not, and even pick up their heart rate, is well known. Worst-case speculation had it, back in the late spring, that these capabilities could be usef for things like tiered pricing in streaming movie rentals. More folks in the room, the more the movie costs.

Instead it seems like Microsoft doesn't plan on just selling eyeballs to advertisers, but their emotional reactions too. Maybe that's why they are not selling the machine without Kinect. Sounds like your extra $100 is going toward putting an uber-Nielsen box in your living room.

Xbox One's Data Treasure Trove Could Reshape Marketing [Advertising Age]

-I'd be more ok with ads if they subsidized the cost of the machine, but they clearly aren't with it clocking in at $100 more than the primary competition, or were used to subsidized live so it was free (maybe with an option to pay for no ads). I'm not pretending they aren't in this to make money and other companies aren't and I'm not even against ads but this just seems ridiculous on the face of it.

Yeah, I mean, I don't really care about it either way, Facebook watches anything you do on your computer while logged onto Facebook and sells it to advertisers. I hate to even think of what they know about me right from my phone, I'm sure almost anything they want to know.

That said, to outwardly brag about it after bad press being somewhat quieted down is just stupid. And arrogant, frankly.

I tried out the Xbone at the Bears game yesterday.  The only demo available was Forza.  It looks nice and the trigger rumble is a nice addition.  That's about it.

I'll wait until I win one, get one as a gift or find $500 lying on the street.

got news for you the government watches everything you do on internet your cell phone recs and your tv viewing and heck who knows if those built in webcams on labtops are not being used by someone. im so sick and tired of people going crazy over this omg look what kinect can do. i bet you have a facebook and twitter account and you still post on that garbage.

if people use things like facebook, google and other sites like those they all put tracking cookies on your computer and watch what you do online then when websites have google adsense they put ads up for items that you either have searched on google for or have viewed websites about so it's already going on in your every day life enough of this BS talk. but who im i kidding people like erad always seems to find something to bash the xbox one over but yet i never once see him bashing ps4 in their forums

Isn't the steam box just a small computer? It literally does the same exact things that a computer does right? It can play steam games and computer games. No console games. Why would that make you rethink getting an Xbox 1 or Ps4? You could buy a $500 gaming pc right now and it would be more powerful than either the Xbox 1 or Ps4. Apples to Oranges.

To answer my own question yes it is literally just a computer. Why is that making you rethink anything? If you want a pc get a pc. I personally can't stand playing on a keyboard and mouse.

So no price yet and you want to switch. LMAO.

it's not using a keyboard and mouse it comes with a controller plus runs on linux plus most games that come out for systems these days come to steam so not really missing much plus you get all the great steam pricing on the steam box. Even if igot a gaming pc i would love to play pc game quality on my lr led tv.

i would like to see you build a gaming pc for 500 bucks that is powerfull as x1 the gpu alone is 300 bucks. Plus i have had gaming pc for years and never use keyboard ad mouse i use a cord 360 controller.

price is not a issue when it comes to the main hobby i have which is gaming but some people are saying anywhere between 600-1200 bucks which is 3 diff kind of models. might i add it will be able to be upgraded according to sources which is not possible on ps4/x1. don't mean i will not get a x1 and ps4 but if this thing is out next spring i think i could hold out till next winter to get ps4/x1.

that thing is 1 k on it's own

the main reason i was looking at this thing is because more i think about it and the games out for both new systems right away all the games i want to play i could get on last gen systems and even pc. DR3 just don't appeal to me at this point the zombie game type is just stale seeing its been done so many times over the years. Ryse more and more i see and hear about it makes me not want to even play it. quantom break is really the only xbox one only game that make me want the system at this point and it don't even have a release date.

So wait....You were defending the Xbox 1 tooth and nail for months. The steam box gets announced and it will probably be an over priced small computer. You could make a computer yourself for much cheaper and buy a controller for it right now and play pc games. Why was the announcement of the steam box some tipping point for you? It doesn't make sense. The whole point of playing on a pc is better graphics and keyboard/mouse. Using a controller puts you at a disadvantage.

So the main reason you want the steam box is to play pc games on your tv? Can't you just use your tv as a monitor in the first place?

The thing with Facebook and things like that which people would compare this to is that they are completely free or you pay for the service and/or device and that's it. It's entirely possible to get a phone you don't get ads on, it's all those free/cheap apps that have the ads. I'm not paying for those or paying very little so the ads make a lot more sense there. And I'm not completely opposed to ads but this takes it to a kind of disturbing extreme and they expect me to pay quite handsomely for it. Yes I know it's "optional" but I'm assuming I'm buying an Xbox One at some point I'm paying for this "optional" thing. As far as the PS4 goes, aside from an uninspiring line-up which I have mentioned repeatedly, where's a negative story to post? Pretty much the worst thing you can say (and they actually brought this up on the last Gamertag radio) is that they aren't really taking advantage of the momentum they have by advertising the shit out of the PS4 and doing a public tour like Xbox One is. Hardly worth posting about. I have defended the Xbox one on plenty of occasions when something was unwarranted (i.e. Sony's swipe at Gamescom was unecessary and poor form frankly and I said that and the discussion about higher resolution basically boils down to nothing because most people won't see a difference). There aren't a whole lot of negatives to post about Sony at this point, though I was equally harsh on them in the beginning of this gen because they fucked up a lot in the beginning and hell it's really only the last 3 or 4 years the PS3 has been a truly good system. The first several years was just awful for them and it was pretty much their own fault. Much like it's Microsoft's now.

i honstly don't see it being over priced at all for whats all in it for lets say the one that comes with gtx 660 is like 600 bucks that still more powerfull then a x1 and ps4 for 200 or 100 dollers more. i already have a gaming pc but would like the steam box to play on my giant lr tv i have been waiting for steam box for awhile. Plus the amount of money you save buying games on steam would easy make up for te price diff of the system compared to x1 ad ps4. i play bf3 on pc right now with 360 controller and i finish near the top every game so it don't put me as a disadvantage at all.

So you expect them to make zero money on the SteamBox?

why would thye not make money the gtx 660 is only like 200 bucks? my guess is the lowest one would be some place between 600-800 bucks

You just said you don't expect it to be overpriced. In order to make money something has to be overpriced.

http://allthingsd.com/20131007/microsoft-denies-report-of-ad-data-being-harvested-from-xbox-ones-kinect/

"The reporter did not interview Mehdi to confirm his interpretation of the speech, a company spokesperson said."

"However, the company said that line was in reference to content that can carry over from the Xbox One into platforms like the second-screen companion, SmartGlass.

“For example, just as Xbox SmartGlass allows companion mobile experiences that are synchronous to what is being watched on TV, advertisers could create new experiences unifying their content across devices,” the company said in an emailed statement. “The quote from Yusuf in Ad Age is not in relation to Kinect.”"

Lol you can buy a fx8320 and a 7950 for about $350! That's twice the CPU and 3x the gpu. I can easily see building a gaming computer that will outperform an x1/ps4 for $500-600.

i would never in my life build a pc with amd you have to also add in the cost of ram, computer case a power supply unit, a blu ray drive, mother board fans that has enough power to cool all those things. would be more like 700-800 bucks if not more .

Ram $80
Mobo $100
PSU $60
Optical drive $40
CPU cooler $30

Only added the amd CPU because it's an 8core processor but I can build an i3 machine tht will smoke either x1/ps4

you would use a 30 doller cpu cooler in a high end gaming rig? remember both systems have blu ray playr not just normal drive.

Im confused why you just can't hook up your current pc to your giant tv. Graphic cards have hdmi.
yep i want to drag my giant desktop computer down the stairs everytime i want to play a game for like 30 mins. it's either buying steam box or buying a over price garbage alian ware computer that is size of a xbox 360.

Yup been using a $30 CPU fan on my 4.1 oc'd i5-4670k since it was released ;). You can build a mini-itx or micro atx gaming PC also for $500-$600 :) keep coming up with excuses.

See I'd love to get a solid gaming PC for cheap, but it still sounds complex, the last time I was really computer savvy was when computers all had DOS prompts. Now it's intimidating and I'd really just like to buy something that works without hassle.

I think it's a lot easier now because everything is plug and play, you don't have to worry about master and slave drives or partitioning your hard drive for OS's. I already have a solid PC that will take me into next gen I would consider it now more than ever to make that jump to PC gaming. With the introduction of steam OS/steam box and a new gen set of consoles things are bound to open up.

what would i be making excuses for ? im just saying i use water cool in my bigger computers seeing i host game serversa nd my computer is on most of the time 24/7. Even i it was not on all the timei would still spend the money on water cooling. i would really like to see the temp in that computer.

Benchmarks are usually 65-69C at full load. Like I said its a mild OC I only raised the voltage to 1.225 but if I really need to I can buy a loop and raise it to 4.8ghz or higher but ATM I get 112fps on skyrim and 78fps playing bf3 at 1080p. Not really interested in pushing my OC yet but I may with bf4 around the corner.
