Exactly...just split them into general categories at first. All of them will have a few of them that are kinda hybrid, but what's the point of making genre groups to organize all your games if you make 7 million groups because of your hybrids? Once you make the general categories, it'll become pretty clear which of your groups are overpopulated and need to be split into further groups. The only category of mine that definitely needs further categorization is RPG. RPG is such a wide category that a lot of different games fall into it - crpg, jrpg, action rpg, etc. And I feel like borderlands should be in a category called "lootfest" along with diablo and torchlight.
I'd recommend holding off on sub categories untill you have a substantial portion of games that fit said category. For example, Borderlands is the only shooter/rpg hybrid I own, so I keep it in RPG action, rather than creating a separate category just for it. Same with adventure titles; anything that's an adventure game, be it point n' click or more adventure than action, goes here. I just create more categories as I can sort them into large groups. No reason to have multiple categories with only 3 or 4 games in them. My limit is usually around 10 or so.

I have tried to get into the DMC games because they look visually stimulating, but for some reason, I just can't.  It's a genre thing I think.  I wasn't on the GoW bandwagon either.  Though I loved Bayonetta, go figure.

Oh this is nice.

I got my three Escape Goat cards, then I bought the two cards I needed. I got my badge. Well guess what? I got an Escape Goat booster pack today. Whee!

I'll sell it so I get cash for more cards.

So, for the people that organize their Steam catalogs by genre, how do separate games to allow you OCD and perfectionism to co-exist? Right now, I don't have any of my installed games categorized due to the issue of some games splitting genres. Like Borderlands is a FPS, but an RPG as well. I feel weird putting BL in the same category as like CoD, since I play them for different reasons. Or Mass Effect...TPS/RPG. My library is getting large enough that I'm now tired of scrolling through my list to look at every title, so some semblance of organization is required.
i usually use is 3rd person shooter if they dont have coop, fps if they dont have coop and sometimes if it 1st person view but not shooting cause im lazy i just put in fps. coop sometimes it depends on campaign or not or games that dont have ccampaign type then usually has coop it depend where i want to add to my library list. i have sports/fighting section adventure aka boring game no offense simulation stragtey others is im not sure where to put then top-down shooter than hot girls section not jk no hot girls section but mostlly i put coop if first then everything else. if this confuse u it realllly hard to explain.

That's funny, because I thought Bayonetta felt more like Devil May Cry.

BTW, in related news, Ninja Theory's previous game, Enslaved: Journey To The West, is coming to PC later this month. I think it was worth playing.

That's cool. I've been waiting for a $5 price drop on PS3, but I can just get it on Steam during a mega-sale event instead.

I think I am in for some DmC. I am tempted by Sniper Elite but I know it's been lower and it would just get shoved to the backlog. Whereas, I might actually play DmC after I'm done with MX vs. ATV.  :whistle2:o

I rarely makes sense to myself, let alone others.

And I really enjoyed Enslaved on 360, I'll definitely pick it up.

How is the port for DMC?

Going to grab it if the port is good.
The performance charts I've seen point to it being insanely good. Like mid range cards maxing the game with 120 fps kind of good.

Okay, maybe it's b/c of how I am - but I often groups things either by publisher or dev, 1st and foremost. As I've lately been buying and accumulating more games from certain publishers in bundles and stuff over the years - i.e. Take-Two, Focus, EA, Meridian 4, Valve, Zenimax, Microids, etc - I been going that route on sorting my categories through that. Especially since more publisher and dev-focused HB's and stuff from Groupees been popping up.

In some cases, I go a step further.

1st off - let's go w/ Zenimax (i.e. the parent company of Bethesda and Id). I have so many Id games, I have "Zenimax - Id Games" and another category is "Zenimax - Bethesda Games" b/c I have a bunch of Bethesda games [Skyrim, Fallout 3 GOTY, FO:NV (even though FO:NV was made by Obsidian, I feel it belongs near FO3 - I don't have enough Obsidian games on Steam, to make an Obsidian category)].

2nd off, let's go w/ 2K - For 2K, I have so many sports and non-sports and some Rockstar games (b/c I'm a big Rockstar fan), I have them in 3 different categories. "2K - Sports Games" and "2K - Non-Sports Games, and "2K - Rockstar Games."

Now, for games I don't own yet.

Any game that have had a "Free Weekend" before that I've downloaded and I don't own out-right, they're in a "Free Weekend" category.

"Demos" also get their own category, as well.

This it to let me know if I do like a game, I do need to buy a game eventually.

Any companies that barely put out many games, I just throw them into either a "Now Installed" category (general category for Installed games); "Not Installed" (if I ain't installed them yet); or specifically the "Indie Games" category (if it's made by an Indie company).

I also add lots of Non-Steam games to Steam - so gamers know what I'm playing, in case they got the same game or want to buy that game 'cause might want to get a MP-game going; or wanna know about more info from me about what I'm playing; or whatever the case may be. Those games, get "ZZZ - Non-Steam Games" category."ZZZ" is used purposely to force it to the VERY bottom so I know they're non-Steam games and so I know I can't it doesn't have full-blown Steam-version support there - those don't belong anywhere remotely even near the rest of my Steam-games, IMHO - b/c they ain't Steam-versions!

I'm always editing and moving games on my list, so it's a never-ending battle - especially as I get more games. I'm always rearranging stuff.

EDIT:

Also, b/c I own lots of games on Steam (over 360, currently) - I often just use the search to find a game or category. It's MUCH easier. A lot of times, I don't feel like going through my long list and scrolling. Since I do type fast and all - "search" command works much better for me.

I used to sort by publisher or developer, but it ends up taking up more space than just organizing by genre.
Once a publisher list gets big, that's when you break 'em down further - i.e. like what I did w/ "Zenimax" games.

Sometimes, if it's a game company w/ lots of games in a franchise, I'll break it down even further.

Example - I have like 4 lists for Valve games, that look like this:

"Valve - Portal games"

"Valve - Half-Life games"

"Valve - Team Fortress games."

"Valve - Counter-Strike games."

EDIT:

Actually, might be easier if I broke it down into "Valve - Half-Life games" and the rest into "Valve - Not Half-Life Games."

I really ain't got a ton of TF, CS, Portal games.

EDIT 2:

And done. For now, that's a better break-down for my Valve games, since my HL list is SO BIG.

Now my Non-HL List is now similar in size to my HL list.

I recommend DMC, its a good pc port, the combat is engaging and boss fight have different varieties. And most importantly to those who have a huge backlog like me, the story doesnt drag for too long.

And if you really want to play it again, there is a leaderboard to aim for. (That reminds me, maybe I should try beat JakeNoname's score some other time.)

I think that's the opposite of what he meant, as then you have even more categories taking up space.

I personally just do it by broad genres as much as possible, and then break them up as I get more games (ie shooters became FPS/TPS and 2D Shooters), and a handful of specialized categories such as Tower Defense. I find that generally it's easiest to keep it as simple as possible, as after a point there are so many categories that it's hardly better than non at all (one of my biggest reasons for using them is to keep detail view short).

Oh, great.

It's that magical damn price at 75% off, too.
And, I have both DMC3: Special Ed untouched from Retail and I barely touched some of DMC4.

FML!
But it's over $10. I'm not sure if that even counts as 75% off on a base game that's been out for almost 9 months. :whistle2:

There's basically no chance of Bionic Commando getting any cheaper right, it's already $9.99 regular and this is 75% off that. I think I'll grab this and maybe DMC. Ninja Theory is a great dev, I have tried DMC 3 or some old one on PS2 and didn't like it, but would try this for cheap.

Oh DMC is 12.49? I though someone said it was $5. Will pass.

Got my Mafia 2 key from the golden joystick thing.

I think I have mentioned this before but I can't stand the thought of my games not being alphabetized, so I just have them in collapsible categories based on the first letter of the title. Plus extra categories for mods, betas, duplicate entries (GTA mac versions...), and Amnesia Fortnight prototypes as well.

Of course this is not entirely foolproof - games starting with the word "A" don't alphabetize right (A Game of Dwarves, A Virus Named Tom, A Valley Without Wind) unlike "The" games. And then there's the age old problem of games within the same series being in the wrong order. Anomaly 2 before Anomaly: Warzone Earth? I could die.

Also, Square Enix has finally announced how the pricing will work for the PC version of Deus Ex: HR Director's Cut.

If you already own the game and the Missing Link DLC, it's just $4.99; if you own the game with no DLC, it's $9.99; and you can also buy it with the game for $19.99. Very fair IMO, they could've really hosed us if they wanted to. I loved the game on 360 and can't wait to replay with the DLC and DX content on PC.

My library is split up into two categories based on whether or not Mooby approves of them. It's not much different than it was before I spent 45 minutes sorting.

It seems I need to revamp my Steam library. My lists are too long and maybe too basic - Favorites, Completed, Indie, Newly Installed, Please Vanish From My Library! (PVFML), and Not Installed.

Is there a preferred app or program that helps organize ones library without manually moving games around within Steam?

From the reviews I have read it does not seem that you can access Codex from in-game which is lame.

There is a game manual in pdf format though if you like to look through that kind of thing:

http://cdn2.steampowered.com/Manuals/204560/CONFRONTATION_manual_INT.pdf?t=1337879717
Oooh, thanks for the game manual. Downloaded it.

BTW - bleh @ new access for Codex while in-game. That's just silly - since it does look like it's well done, too. I don't wanna look at that stuff outside of the game. I'd want to access it while in-game, to immerse myself further into the game-world - especially once I am told "New Codex Entry" for a pop-up and when I need a break from the constant barrage of combat.

So, does your list have A LOT more in either...

"Mooby - Approved?"

"Mooby - Not approved"?

Or " Mooby - No verdict yet"? ;)

Depressurizer; I don't have a link handy but it handles everything client-side and is really quick and easy to use.

Here's a link: https://code.google.com/p/depressurizer/

So this PVFML - will you be doing a lot of Family Trading to get rid of those licenses, once the Steam Trading thing goes active? ;)

EDIT:

I could see it now...

Friend: "I'm done w/ this game. You can have the license back for [insert game Det traded/shared]!"

Deutrium7: "Don't you even think about it!"

Friend: "But, this game sucks!"

Deut: "That's why it's was on my "PVFML" List and now on my "VFML" (Vanished From My List - for games Deut traded/shared)! I am not adding it back to my "PVFML" List! It's yours! Goodbye!"

First, a reminder that the Borderlands 2 $100k Loot Fest starts in a few minutes and runs for nearly a month. http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=333631

I only keep 100 or so games installed at any given time, so it's quite easy for me to do basic categorizations. As a result, my method is in line with what you suggest - keep it simple.

I have

FAVORITES - anything I play regularly (or want to nag myself into playing)

ADVENTURE

CASUAL

DRIVER

FPS

PLATFORMER

SHOOTER

STRATEGY

I mean, all you really want to accomplish is to create several shorter lists to view your games alphabetically, right? Clicking into multiple layers or having to agonize over whether a game is an ACTION/RPG or an RPG/FPS seems like it's more trouble than it's worth.

Is anyone else in the Family Sharing Beta? I just got the email and I read the FAQ and it's confusing.
Yeah. What questions do you have?

The biggest hurdle for most people is understanding that you actually have to log in on the machine with which you wish to share.

I don't even collapse mine. Just one giant list of alphabetized games.

Is there anyone you trust enough to give your log in info to? Anyone you haven't met in person? Some say make a new password for the other user to use and then change it back once they are added, but can't they make their own password changes on your account the moment they are in?

Once the other person has access can they install whatever they want barring the few GFWL exceptions? Can you revoke access to allowed comps?

For me? No. You're on the hook for any VAC bans that occur using your games. I granted access to the PC downstairs in my home so that my kids could play when I am not.

The PC with "access" to your account only has the ability to download and play games. They can't make any changes. They have access to all eligible games which you can revoke at any time.
