GOG Deals Thread

I'm strongly considering getting Nox. I remember buying it because a) I thought it was going to be like Diablo and b) Westwood Studios made it. I unfairly judged it because I expected Diablo and that's not what it was. So I stopped playing after a couple hours. Since then, I've heard many positive things about it from reminiscing individuals. I want to give it another shot now that I'm older and "wiser."

I used to be a Westwood Studios fanboy (Command and Conquer lover here) and I got Nox as a present. It was pretty fun almost like a weird action rpg adventure game where you have to solve puzzles and fight some fights but that's about it. not too bad at all and quite a bit different than diablo. I need to replay it as well as I only beat it with the Warrior.

Just picked up Undying + The Witcher for $2.39. Not bad. See a lot of Undying recommendations off of here and SlickDeals and it seems like a good Halloween game.

How's SimCity 2000? Is it "Will Wright good" or is it actually good?

I haven't played SC2000 since my middle school had a class dedicated to it. They called it "Compuer Lab."

Ed: GOG version is DOS, not '95 native: http://www.gog.com/forum/simcity#1378584303

I loved that game back then. I don't know how it will stand the test of time now, but it was amazing.

So about Jade Empire again: does anyone know if the GOG version is different from the Steam version? It seems there are issues getting the latter to work on modern systems, but the former is listed as compatible all the way up to Windows 8 so I assumed it had been updated to do so.

Signs point to "Will work fine."

Thanks, didn't think to check the GOG forums. Will probably be picking this up after watching some videos and seeing it is only a reasonable 20-25 hours to complete :)

EDIT: GOG seems to clearly not want me to buy this for some reason. Both Paypal and my card are being declined for whatever reason, despite all details being correct and more than enough money in the account. If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated, though I suspect it's just something stupid on my end :headache:

Sometimes things get declined at random.

If you still can't buy this later today, poke me on Steam. I'll buy it for you, just send me the cash through PayPal.

Probably old news, but I just noticed in my Groupees Be Mine 6 that we received GOG keys for Earth 2160 in addition to the Steam key.  Not sure when that happened.

If you want, I can buy/gift the game to you, which would temporarily fix the issue for you. Usually issues like these are caused by your bank, but I'm not sure what's happening if paypal is being rejected too. Your best bet is to contact their support. They're generally pretty fast at responding.

Also, I didn't know people had issues with the Steam version of Jade Empire.. Steam version works fine for me on Windows 7 64 bit.

First time I tried to buy on GOG it failed and my credit card company called me shortly after thinking I was phished. I told them no and was able to put it through the second time. That was back about a year ago when Total Annihilation was on sale.

CC CS is like Steam CS but not quite 100% Weekend at Bernie's. It's more like 32.9%, coincidentally matching your interest rate.

Finally bought Alpha Centauri. I owned the game back in the day, but never got the expansion that's now included. The fact that it works on Mac OS X now is also a huge bonus.

I'm eyeing up (most likely to least likely to buy):

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault War Chest

Ultima VII: Complete

Theme Hospital

Anyone have these and want to throw their 2 penny review in? I'd appreciate it.

I picked up Medal of Honor. Haven't had a chance to play it yet, but things like time of involvement and type of game it is matter most to me.

It's weird, but in these sales I rather pick up a game that's easier to complete than one more time consuming. I'm not much of a strategy/RPG/sim guy or anything, so about 90% of stuff I ignore just out of my own tastes.

I am a WWII history follower though and wanted to play a game like that, and old Medal of Honor games seem to be the most 'authentic' from what I've heard.

Ultima 7 is the best RPG ever (IMHO). But I'm a fanboy, I even think is the best PC game ever xD

Theme hospital... I miss bullfrog.

I have like 170 games on GOG now and I have played only 1 of them for around 15 minutes... To be fair it is more about having alot of the games I enjoyed as a kid around for me to dick around with when I feel like. (Police Quest 1 / Castles 1+2 / Simcity 2000 were some of my favorites)

LOL. Sorry, you have an issue. I don't get why people pay to have lists of games. Happens a lot on Steam. I'm guilty of a lot of Humble Bundle unplayed purchases, but that's mostly just a reason to give a few bucks to charity.

Wish I could comment to help you out. The version GOG sells is the one I remember playing as a little kid so I'm not sure if the Windows version is superior.

Never thought I would hear a system wars question about DOS and Windows 95, LOL. If it's the version available then it's the version avaiable.

Everyone knows the superior version of SimCity 2000 was the 64DD one. :bouncy:

Take a look at the reviews:

http://www.gog.com/game/simcity_2000_special_edition#reviews=1

I'm not sure they are to be believed, which is why I asked. (Go past page 1)
http://www.gog.com/forum/simcity/windows_95_version

That should answer it. It's the DOS version. The problem with Windows 95 games is they run in 16 bit, which makes it extremely dificult to be compatible with 64 bit systems. Even games from the old Microsoft pack in library like SkiFree or Chips Challenge or whatever it was called won't work.

Sources are telling me that it feels weird to pay for a DOS game because you should feel weird.

If you read my post, you would see I didn't ask what the compatibility issue was nor did I ask what version GOG sells - I figured that out myself. It's pretty obvious that 16-bit Win95 games don't run well on modern OS. What I asked if the DOS version was "inferior" to the Windows version.

I posted a link to reviews saying that GOG's version (DOS version) is worse or inferior - it should be pretty obvious that I know GOG sells the DOS version at that point, and that's not the question I was asking.

My question pertained to why people dislike the DOS version and say the Windows one is better. Gameplay differences? UI differences? Additional content? None of the reviews there really explain why the DOS version isn't preferred, so I was curious.

I don't care whether a game runs in DOSBox or Windows (I have plenty of classics on both), but when people are saying the versions have major differences it seems fair to ask.

Great Game, Terrible Version

 Hairball:

I sunk a lot of time into this on an old windows 95 desktop and was delighted to see it on the site.
However, this is not the same version, it's the dos version which is far inferior. I know that there would be all sorts of computability issues getting the windows 95 version to run but throwing up the dos version with dosbox just seems lazy.

I have MoH: Allied Assault -- I've only played a bit of it, but I like it. It's linear, it definitely shows its age, and It's not exactly a modern shooter, but the game is fun, the graphics are passable for a game that's over a decade old, and the music and atmosphere are amazing. If you like shooters, it's worth picking up.

Are you trolling?

Is the DOS version of SimCity 2000 (the version GOG sells) as inferior to the Windows version as the reviews have me to believe?

Please show me where I asked WHICH version GOG sells. I'm the one who linked the reviews, remember?

Are you mad that I'm asking why the DOS version is "inferior"? Do highlight in that review you posted where it explains why this is the case.

It was an honest, direct question. Are we not allowed to ask those anymore or even be curious at all, seeking the feedback of trusted peers?

Wish I could comment to help you out. The version GOG sells is the one I remember playing as a little kid so I'm not sure if the Windows version is superior.

stupidproz1 - I forgot to say thank you for your response. You actually read my question and responded with sincerity. Your reply was much more helpful. :)

Yes.

Subtly trolling since a few weeks ago. This place lacks punch.

There's nothing to spike so "what the fuck" is what I always say.

This might answer your question:

The Windows version does have several nice additions over the DOS version. Since it supports Windows Multimedia, there's much wider sound support. wit the extended resolution, you can fit more on the screen at once. The windows version also has a 4th zoom level, so you can get even tighter in on things - It basically just doubles the size of the pixels, but at high resolutions, even the 3rd zoom level is too tiny to work in). It also runs in the background, so you can crank on Excel or whatever while your sims are running around in the background. It also does fix a lot of the DOS (and even some Mac) bugs.

Thank you, MrNinjaSquirrel. :)

It makes sense that the Win version had extended resolutions and would have fixed some bugs the DOS version has.
