Free Stuff - Needs Updating

There are quite a few free and free2play games and mods on steam. You can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Yep. That's some mighty fine money laundering operation you got there, Gabe.

They usually are, but since they're published by Activision, they don't get that much of a discount. Frankly if you want the games you're better off getting them at GOG.
Actually GOG isn't any cheaper and is actually more expensive for Kings Quest as they split up each series into multiple sets. The Kings Quest series is $19.99 on Steam and its $30 on GOG, although you do get KQ 8 which isn't included in Steams collection. Not worth an extra 10 bucks tho. Space Quest is the same price on both sites, $20. Leisure Suit Larry and Police Quest aren't available on Steam so not much choice on that one. WIll have to buy those on GOG. Basically I am looking at $80 bucks for all 4 sets on GOG. Thats roughly double what I am hoping to pay. Hopefully I will be able to get Kings Quest and Space Quest on sale during Steams Sale. Otherwise it would be cheaper to just buy the physical copies of the games.

GOG will have a winter sale as well, and the Quest games will almost certainly be a daily sale at about 75% off.

My Steam Holiday Sale Wishlist (Many of these probably aren't likely)

$10 Dishonored GOTY

$15 Far Cry 3 + Blood Dragon Bundle

$10-15 Metro Last Light + Season Pass

$10-$15 Borderlands 2 Goty

$10 Assassin's Creed 3

$10 State of Decay

$5 Call of Juarez Gunslinger

$5 Guacamelee

$3.75 Gunpoint

Many of these probably aren't likely, but if I say $10, I'll probably stretch to $15 for Dishonored for example. I've waited long enough on that game.

I did the research and determined that it wasn't worth an extra $50 to have 4GB on that particular card. The key thing that allowed me to settle on 2GB was some advice I read, that by the time games really require more than 2GB vram (at 1080p/1200p resolutions) this card will be obsolete and not able to run games at max settings anyway regardless of the extra ram.

What I kept reading is that you'd only need the 4GB model if you were running higher resolutions or multi-monitor setups, or SLI.
I came to the same conclusion when I bought my 2gb gtx 770. I was originally sold on the 4gb version, but since I play almost everything on my living room plasma at 1080p I would probably never take advantage of the extra ram. And by the time I will Maxwell will be out and the limit won't be the ram. My next resolution jump will be 4k, and that is years away until the price makes sense and there is acutal content. The only difference is I payed $410 or so for my 770 back in July. It was worth it though, I had a window to play a bunch of the latest games.

Last year they had a sale with all 8 King's Quests, 5 Quest for Glorys, 6 Space Quests, 4 Police Quest and Swat 1+2 for $20 (if you bought them all together.)

Also, game series get discounts when there's no sale going on. If you buy all King's Quest games at the same time, you pay $20, not $30. Police Quest + Swat and the two Roger Wilco sets get a $5 discount. So you'd only pay $60 if you bought them all together right now.

30,000 Steam keys stolen during Wadjet Eye Games' Halloween promotion
Michael Jones at 18:46 on 01 November 2013

Wadjet Eye Games was giving away Steam keys for its adventure game, The Blackwell Deception, on Halloween before President Dave Gilbert pulled the plug. Gilbert says he planned on giving away 50,000 keys in total, but quickly changed his plans when he discovered that 30,000 of the keys had been stolen.

People downloaded hundreds of keys at a single time, Gilbert tells Red Door Blue Key, "collecting Steam keys for reselling later." To combat this, Gilbert removed the Steam keys and placed them on another website, attracting a backlash from players.

"It almost instantly led to a large number of angry emails and tweets," he says. "Even though it was a free game, it’s almost as if it didn’t count because it wasn’t going in their Steam library." He tried to find a way to prevent further exploitation by asking BMT, the sales provider Gilbert used, to create a "1 code per IP" system, but the hackers masked their IP addresses and continued downloading anyway. By the end of the night, 30,000 keys had been pilfered.

The problem began when BMT inadvertently posted a link to a Steam key generator. After 20,000 downloaded keys and at Gilbert's request, BMT removed the public link to the generator, but that wasn't enough.

"The next morning I woke up to discover something terrifying," says Gilbert. While BMT did remove the link to the generator, the sales provider did not remove the generator itself. At the very least, Gilbert says that fans have been genuinely sympathetic for his plight.

"The outpouring of support on twitter, Facebook, and email has been nothing short of heart warming," says Gilbert, who doesn't seem to hold any contempt towards BMT, saying "their service was never intended for anything like this." But he also admits his exasperation to Gamasutra that he could not persevere through the chaos for what started out as a free giveaway.

"[But] it was just too much to deal with, and there was only so much effort I was willing to put into a free offer."

No good deed goes unpunished.

That is just Bullshit. I cant believe people would do that. Makes me sick
Really? You do realize that 90% of the populace are dicks or variations thereof, right?

Hehe, wait until you see MysterD Client Technical Support.

If you thought Steam's Support was bad, you ain't seen NOTHING yet... ;)
Hire me, every reply will include a burger pic. ;)

I think it's more surprising that the guy from Wadjeye Eye didn't expect people to exploit his giveaway. He didn't limit the keys, or do anything to limit it being exploitable.. Some easy ways to avoid this mess would be to put up a giveaway on Steamgifts, or use the new system Humble Bundle implemented by linking your Steam account directly to redeem keys (not sure if that system can be used universally though).

If anything decent is being given away freely, it's going to be exploited. That's just how the world works, only takes a tiny bit of common sense to realize that..
The deal was throttled to 1 key per IP address, so people masking their address intentionally knowingly exploited the giveaway.

Well yeah, a lot of giveaways have an IP restriction, that doesn't stop anyone from masking it. Exploiting is usually intentional.. I never suggested otherwise.

So I saw this on Steam Market while looking to sell CARDZ!

What in the fuck happened on October 7th?!
Brutal Legend made more money in that day than on any other day since release...?

As for my Holiday Wish List... I'm sure I'll pick up games I'm not even thinking about but:

Stalker Games Bundles (Never played them, and I need to fix this.)

Bioshock Bundle

Borderlands Bundle (or a 2K bundle)

Transformers Bundle (Figuring this will be the only way for the prices to be reasonable.)

Kerbal Space Program

Prices... Not sure... I'll know them when I see them.

My OCD winter sale wishlist - taking into account potential bundle deals and Amazon credits.

Top wants likely to see steep discounts:
Tomb Raider
Civ Brave New World
To the Moon
Typing of the Dead
Pac-Man Championship Edition

Mortal Kombat Komplete

Top wants likely to see steep discounts that won't hit my price points:
DmC
Far Cry 3
BioShock Infinite
Endless Space
OMD series
Enslaved
Spelunky

Top wants unlikely to see steep discounts:
XCOM EW
Wolf Among US, WD Season 2
KOF 13
Injustice

So I'd say I'm prepared for sale season.  What's going to make the biggest difference this year is that after sorting through my backlog, even the number of games that I consider must-plays has now become far too large for me to reasonably tackle with my increasingly busy schedule, so I can wait for killer deals on pretty much anything.  On top of that, I actually went back to HOMMV this weekend and was surprised at how well it still holds up after all these years.  Even the music doesn't bother me as much as it used to.  I really wish Ubi would put a decent studio behind this series.  With a little more money and care, it could be really great again.

I've got too many games and not enough time to play them due to Baby Flow so I'm not remotely fussed about possible deals.

But if there's some crazy meta-game for Christmas I'll be all over it like a cheap suit. I love that stuff.

Apathetic about video game deals due to real life circumstances? How dare you sir. You are gross.

It gets worse. Since he's been born I've:

A) missed the launch price of not one but two Indie Royale bundles;
B) allowed up to half a dozen games with cards to go un-farmed;
C) gone to bed rather than stay up for an hour's gaming.

I am everything that's wrong with modern society.

On the plus side, the tiny little poop machines are pretty fun.

My list for Satan Santa:

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified + DLC

Saints Row IV + DLC

State of Decay

Metro: Last Light + DLC

Call of Duty WaW/BlOPs/MW2 (gotta complete my library)

Deadly Premonition

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Outlast

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing

Betrayer

Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches

BioShock Infinite Season Pass

Borderlands 2 DLC

Really, I want everything, but I'm told that's "unrealistic".

Baby's kill gaming. All that crying and neediness. I have to play things I can play in short bursts. Path of exile is my new thing

Sounds like all the regular non-regular CAGs that come out during sale season. Should be seeing some of them soon I'd think.
They are more annoying then screaming babies, that just shit through their diaper up their back and spit up hot cottage cheese all over your shirt you just put on.

If the projectile vomit didn't make such a mess of the sofa, it would be bordering on artistic.

Such grace. Those curves. That projection. It's a thing of beauty.

I have yet to experience projectile, what I get is usually the curdled baby milk spit up that smells like something died.

I'm I the only one trying not buy any game during rest of year?

Only must buy for me was Dishonored Brigmore Witches, but "bought" it already (free after coupon).

Thought might buy some good bundles / very cheap games / something I have to play "now".

During last year 190 games/bundles/dlc (transactions) and whopping ~100€ used (Actual real money used).

One positive thing: Cards. At first I thought they are totally useless, but in the end they have paid almost everything since that I have bought from Steam :D.

My Winter Sale for cheap:

Games that have been on my Steam Wishlist for a while:
Sid Meier's Civ 5: Brave New World
Winter Voices bundle
Ys bundle
Star Wars Jedi Knight bundle
Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes

Newer Releases I would like to have:
Outlast
Typing of the Dead
Wolf Among Us
Total War Rome II
Papers Please

I'm sure there will be various indie games and DLC that are cheap but you never know what you will find until the sale hits.  As usual I expect that my final purchases will be anything not currently on my wishlist.

Ok guys, enough with the baby talk. Stop giving me nightmares.
Did any of you guys watch A Serbian Film like I told you to? What did you think of the newborn porn scene?
This abused whore is in labor on a table in a torture warehouse. A guy with one eye comes in and natural births the child, smacks it to clear its throat, then unzips his fly and just goes to town on the poor infant while the mother watches, smiling.

If you feel like you're going to throw up, make sure you do it on Drabe's new shirt.

What the hell has this thread turned into? Baby battle stories and visual descriptions of  fuck shit?

Let me excuse myself to go find another Steam related thread... wait... what... there really isn't one? Damn it.

{full body shrug}

I might be tempted to pickup Shadow Warrior if it hits an acceptable CAG-like price in future Steam sales. Has anyone had any experience with it?

You're asking about opinions on a mashup of Duke Nukem Forever and Serious Sam 3, and you call us devolved? ;)

It looks pretty fun, although the trailers hardly show anything plot-centric. IGN gave it an 8.6. I wouldn't buy it for $10, but perhaps for $5. Ideally, it'll be a really good price on Amazon DD.

I feel like if you wait long enough this is the type of thing that can get pretty cheap fairly quickly. I'm also a bit interested.

Oh yeah, it's full on wait-till-it-gets-dirt-cheap territory type of a game.

Haha, I'm glad you caught my sarcasm.
