The following thread are for niche-based Japanese video games by smaller companies such as Atlus, NIS America, AKSYS, XSEED, D3 Publisher, KOEI/TECMO, SNK Playmore, Ignition, Natsume or any sweet deals for those who are passionate and hardcore about Japanese video games even from the bigger companies like SquareEnix, Sega, Bandai Namco, etc.

But to avoid any messiness of links everywhere, we'll focus on games within the last 2-3 years as opposed to the last five-ten. [although, if you do see older titles on sale, please post them regardless].

The theme of these deals are Japanese video games distributed in the US by the smaller niche companies. The thread is literally for those who love Japanese games.
There will be a few Korean games that you may see on this list, such as the "DJ Max" games.

If you see a deal, please post!

NOTE: Please check the most recent page for the latest deals.

And I want to thank many of you in advance who submit their deals and their support!!!

well vc2 only sold 90k in na so I can understand not wanting to support it after that on the psp. but with sales dropping across the board after moving it to psp you'd think that would of been a sign to move it back >.>
I wonder how it would do on 3DS?? Huge install base in both countries, and Atlus seems to be doing well on the 3DS in the West.

Hey! I did! And I got a nice little preorder artbook with it. Why I didn't sell it for $80 at the time is beyond me though... I think Folklore was out by then too so there were 3 games worth owning! Resistance being the other game. VC is the one of few games I knew I had to buy after playing the demo and the only demo I cleared twice. Also had to look it up - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Valkyria-Chronicles-preorder-artbook-On-the-Gallian-Front-/261303842664?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cd6ec3768 go me!
   I so wish I had pre-ordered Valkyria Chronicles. I so would buy that pre-order artbook.

I have the Udon artbooks for VC volumes 1 and 3. Hopefully that covers the material in that bonus.

This is the first time I have ever heard a pre-order bonus for Valkyria Chronicles. Was there also a physical bonus for VC2?

I know there was DLC offered. I bought Valkyria Chronicles 2 on release week from Kmart because of a Kmart coupon deal at the time, instead of Gamestop.

Gamestop didn't send out the DLC codes on VC2, from what I recall. At least I didn't get one and they gave some excuse about the promotion being pulled by Sega.

I didn't buy VC2 at launch but it might have been only DLC. I did get a set of pins at PAX East though so maybe that was a preorder bonus as well. How are the VC artbooks? I'm considering buying them but I like encyclopedia type stuff more than full artbooks - like Resident Evil Archives.

As for supporting games I figure the most important thing is buying new. I figure if you buy new in the first year you're supporting the company even if you buy after a price drop.

Lastly how limited are SE first print games? I have the $5 promo and its in my goldbox so I can get it for $35 shipped but I feel like NewEgg may have it later for ~$30.

I still want to know where this is going:

Oh dear god. I will buy a system solely to play this!

Any other RPGs in Japan in English? I know its not common but I know they're are some import friendly games out there I just don't know which.
The Inazuma Eleven games are in English in the UK. Need UK hardware for that instead, obviously, but the Nintendo DS ones are region-free, of course. They also got Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, which is arguably an RPG (and really weird and really fun).

Yep, I definitely agree with you there. I suppose in the end, maybe everyone failed: us and Sega both. Really depressing.

:(

I think it is a good lesson for us, though, like was said above--there are times when we can't be cheap and gotta support at full price. I do some of that, though not as much as I'd like. There are a lot of NISA games on PS3 that I want (some that are even really good! :p ), and I have not picked them up yet. Mostly I'm waiting/hoping for Vita releases of D2 and Guided Fate Paradox, but I know I should just grab them. When I have a job, I really am going to just buy stuff full price and support things better.
Actually, I think the main problem that happened with Valkyria Chronicles 2's sales in the United States was the move to the PSP.

Moving the game to the PSP made lots of sense for Sega in Japan because that console was where the majority of the domestic market was, mostly because the vast majority of gamers there play on portables for various reasons that I will not go in depth about here. However, in the United States, the PSP had the distinction of having a high console sell rate but an exceptionally poor attach rate (few games are sold for it). For reference, another console with that same sort of problem was the Nintendo Wii. In Nintendo's case, this had more to do with the audience being largely comprised of non-traditional gamers who only purchased the console for Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and possibly a Super Mario title. In Sony's case, the problem with the attachment rate could be attributed to its audience as well, but in this this case, it was the hardcore gamers and the fact that piracy on the PSP was utterly rampant because of the ease of doing so. Mind you, the Nintendo DS also had many issues with piracy as well, but the console was so widespread and ubiquitous that even with a significant amount of piracy, there were enough legitimate paying customers for first and third party titles that popular support continued. Notice how developer support dried up on the PSP in the West? It was not because of lack of consoles in customer hands. It dried up because development and localization outside of Japan became a losing business proposition for most.

Even more frustrating is that people would take 2 mediocre games for $15 instead of paying $30 for a quality game.
Well, if somone is trying to collect as many new games as possible, then finding the lowest price for each title, regardless of the relative quality (which is highly subjective and personal), is naturally going to be the overriding concern. It isn't feasible for most to spend close to msrp in order to support the developers AND amass a large collection. And those who buy first get the privilege of obtaining & playing the game immediately. Those who are willing to wait get the benefit of being able to acquire more games for their dollar. In economics that's known as opportunity cost, and I don't condemn CAGs who choose one option over the other, since it's their choice as to how they allocate their limited funds.

It also depends entirely on what you're willing to pay and whether you're willing to risk going in early and end up disappointed.  It would help if more games had demos and they were proper examples of things to come.

whole reason I picked up vesperia new was because it was good when I played the demo. While with xillia it was mostly a mediocre experience and I would of preferred not paying as much as I did even with the sound track and art book.

I'll pay full price for the next tales game when its actually complete

They are wonderful. I'm sure there are some video reviews that flip through them but these artbooks are more than just art. Lots of info.

Yeah, the VC artbooks are basically perfect. That is everything that I want from an artbook.

Can I do any better than MSRP on Hatsune Miku for PS3?  Gamestop has it for $49.99.

I've been really interested in the game (love rhythm games) but haven't seen a deal on it at all.  Though, it might be too obscure/rare/limited to get a pricedrop?  I don't see it very often.

Unless you're willing to wait, give Amazon Warehouse Deals a try. That was how I got mine for 30ish. Immediately picked it up and never looked back, considering how stupidly hard to find it is right now.

I know we're cheap asses, for sure, but if you really love rhythm games and want companies to take more risks with stuff like this, just grab it now at full price! :)

I don't like rhythm games, which is sad for me. But I know Sega will only take so many risks. We don't want Hatsune Miku to end up like Yakuza, Valkryia Chronicles, Resonance of Fate and other risks they've taken that haven't paid off.

If I see a non-gutted copy, I'll likely go this route. I have a $25 gift card to burn.

Does Xseed ever have any holiday sales?

Just curious.
I noticed that with Xseed, they have major sales during anime conventions like Anime Expo but they do occasional sales, but I see Amazon having sales on Xseed titles.

I was hoping for a major Aksys Games sale like they did two or three years ago.

Do you guys think NISA will have a PSN sale any time soon?    (I know, I just got done saying we need to support niche games by paying full price! Hypocrite!)

Speaking of NISA, and while it isn't major, Aksys is having a sale for their digital titles for a limited time posted here.

http://www.aksysgames.com/2013/12/03/aksys-games-prepares-for-the-holidays-digitally/
Hm! I thought those were permanent price drops on the PSN! They're not? I have most of them, but if it's not permanent, I will have to get what else I want, too.

They don't say when the "sale" ends, and on the PSN deals thread, it has them listed as permanent price drops.

I have never played 9 hours/persons/doors or the sequel on the 3ds. Is there any reason to expect these to go on sale? Wondering if I should use my $5 promotion credit on amazon or just wait.

I really want to get the sequel, but I keep hearing about a glitch. I wonder if they fixed it by now with an update. Because I know people kept mentioning to get the Vita version due to the 3DS glitch.

I doubt they will go on sale. you can check awd for them. I picked up 999 there ln for I think somewhere between 7 to 10 bucks and virtues last reward pops up there every now and then. last I saw was 23 ln.

From what I understand the glitch is only in one puzzle of the game and only occurs if you save during that puzzle. While it is a lengthy puzzle I guess as long as you remember this while playing its not so bad. It seems like they would have fixed it though, idk.

even without the glitch the vita version is superior in my opinion. i highly recommend it

This is utterly the truth. And it is a very big shame.
I've owned ~6+ PSP's and tons of UMDs since launch day including the Launch 32mb bundle. And I was involved in the PSP Homebrew scene from the 1.00/1.50 days as well.

It's because of the incredible rampant piracy early onthat we didn't get remakes of MMX2,MM2 and so on. Not to mention all the other games that tanked because of it. (MMMHX only sold like 10,000 copies initially IIRC. Which is insane).

Moving it to the PSP was the worst possible decision they could've made. Sega seems to be good at making those kinds of blunders.

When I was announced I was dumbfounded as to why they would possibly make such a move when it ended up selling so well on the PS3 in the west and that's where the audience was...

As for the PSP and Sony, Sony didn't help matters. Especially EOL with the PSP GO/PSVita and how they screwed literally everyone who legitimately supported the platform from day 1 by basically telling us "Oh PSP games are cheap on the PSN in the west! Just rebuy them! /Troll Oh some games aren't on there? Too bad!"

They never patched the physical version of Virtue's Last Reward, but they fixed the digital version.

If you know about the glitch it is easy enough to avoid anyway. Deciding between the two versions should be based on if you prefer sharper visuals/better sound and multiple saves (Vita version), or if you prefer 3D and the convenience of the second screen as a notepad (3DS version).

Wasn't VLR on sale on the 3DS eShop recently, or was that just a price drop?

Whatever the case, both are great games, and VLR is great on both platforms.  I have it on both.  Free on PS+, and then I grabbed it on 3DS when it hit the eShop (and I thought it was on sale).  Who knows why I bought it twice.  I just felt like I should.

for the first $20 is the lowest it will most likely go, since its the reprint.

The 3DS and PSVita version are on sale on their site for $30 each.

Good price for both.

Anyone know where I can get a deal on the VC artbooks? Or any sites that occasionally have artbooks on sale? I used my 30% coupon on the dark souls design works preorder :O

Okay found some used ones and was able to get VC 3 Complete artworks + Growlanser Art Works for ~$31 shipped. Now to find VC 1 and 2.

Amazon usually has artbooks for 25-40% off. for an every day "I want this now" kind of thing they're the best. Rightstuf does do sales on art books occasionally though and you can get any of 'em for 40% off if you're a gotanime member (33% otherwise which is still better than some of amazon's). if amazon taxes you then i'd just wait for the next. happens every 4 months or so.

Is Amazon still running the 30% off / up to $10 promotion? I picked up VC2 for $24 with that deal; it was the last one to round out the collection.

Sorcery Saga in a few days woo hoo !!
I'd like to do a day one purchase for this, but I'm a bit leery. Hopefully some reviews will be out before the game or shortly thereafter.

I don't want to get Hometown Storied again (my new mental term for buying a game day one and realizing that it's crap).

That happened to me with Assassin's Creed - I bought the limited edition too. It was the first game I gave ebay/10. Also if anyone is interested in the two artbooks I bought the seller has more.

http://product.half.ebay.com/_W0QQtgZinfoQQprZ159826370 - Growlanser 12.98 + 3.49 shipping.
