Haven't heard anything about a winter sale yet, but Nintendo doesn't really put their retail/eShop titles on sale much if at all so that's not likely to happen.
Yeah. The most progressive thing that I can recall Nintendo did as far as sales or promotions for retail games go is the cross-promotion of Fire Emblem: Awakening and Shin Megami Tensei IV for 3DS where they offered the $30 credit for registering both on Club Nintendo. I wish they would do things like that far more often or have eShop sales that were more comparable to Steam, PSN, or Xbox Live, but Nintendo has kind of always did their own thing when it comes to video games and distribution.

I wonder what the heck they did that Fire Emblem/SMT promotion for anyway?  What made them decide to do that?  Did they just want to push RPGs?  Test the market?  They did that and haven't done much with RPGs since (well, they are releasing Bravely Default, but... that's all).

They've been getting better though. Good sales on Monster Hunter and RE Revelations lately and I think they had New Leaf for $25 or $30 a couple months ago.

Anyone Think There's A Chance Animal crossing New Leaf Will Go On SaLe At Any point During This Winter SaLe? Seems it'S All VC And Smaller Titles. Was Hoping To Possibly Double DIp The Discounts Using The Best Buy Eshop Sale. Also, Only Want It Digitally....

And Yes, I Know My Phone Formats strangely On ThIs SiTe... it's WEird And I Don't Know Why
Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a joy to play. I would recommend just finding yourself a discounted physical copy on Amazon Warehouse Deals or taking advantage of a Buy 2 Get 1 Free sale the next time a major retailer offers one. Waiting for the digital version to go on sale is just begging for a Snickers bar (i.e. you may not be going anywhere for for a while).

Monster Hunter and Resident Evil were Capcom of course, though, not Nintendo.  I don't think any first-party games have ever been on sale unless it was the physical version being on sale because of the volition of a physical retailer.

I say just grab Animal Crossing for full price.  I buy first-party stuff the day it comes out now if I'm going to buy it digitally, just so I can justify it.  But AC is already $35, and it's great, and you want to have it on your SD card rather than having to pop in the game card.

I am just glad that Nintendo and Atlus are supporting the RPG market here in the United States. Square Enix is so risk averse now that it required Nintendo stepping in to localize Bravely Default (which by all indications is a fantastic game), even though there is a huge audience for the 3DS. I am inclined to think that the cross-promotion was a "long game" strategy to prepare the Western market for the localization of Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem for the Wii U. I certainly hope that was the case and that this is not going to require an Operation Rainfall situation to get that game on our shores.

Good point! The promotion did in fact involve both franchises, and those two franchises are the ones involved in SMT x Fire Emblem. I hadn't thought of that.

And yes, these are dark times. If Square Enix and Level 5 can't be f*cked to localize their games, then I wish Nintendo would hire more people and step it up and localize them. We are missing Dragon Quest VII, many other Dragon Quest games, and tons upon tons of Level 5 stuff (like Fantasy Life, Youkai Attack, and a ton more). I just don't get what Nintendo has to lose. Even the fact that they held back the release of Bravely Default until February is a little bizarre to me.

And don't forget; Reggie said Operation Rainfall had nothing to do with Xenoblade Chronicles getting released in the U.S. Pff. His body isn't the only thing that's ready.

I think that Reggie is saying what is required of any person representing a company that is publicly traded in the stock market. I tend to think that the major contributing factor to Xenoblade Chronicles getting a United States release is that Nintendo of Europe had taken the risk and localized the game in Europe, and fortunately, the British still speak the same language fundamentally that we do. This probably vastly reduced the cost of localizing here, and even so, Nintendo of America still distributed it in such a limited way that GameStop took advantage of this fact to artificially raise the price of Xenoblade Chronicles so they could later sell copies at a higher markup. This reduced the risk even further for Nintendo, but made it almost impossible for fans to legitimately find and play what may very well be one of the best RPG's of the last console generation.

You're right, of course, that Reggie is just doing what he has to do.  I have strong opinions about that kind of capitalistic business and prefer a different kind of business myself.

It seems asinine to me that Nintendo took that much prodding to basically just manufacture a game; as you said, it was already localized.  I know Nintendo likes to futz around and do different localizations for the U.S. and the U.K., but it wouldn't be necessary.  Hopefully if we ever come to a situation like that again, Nintendo can now just release the U.K. version on the N.A. eShop and be done with it if they aren't willing to break even (or do better than break even) to create some good will.

There are Inazuma Eleven games localized for the U.K. that I really wish Nintendo could somehow just toss onto the eShop and sell me.  It just seems like they have so little to lose.  I realize no one cares about Inazuma Eleven here, but surely if they stuck it on the eShop and put it on the front page they'd at least sell 10-20k to soccer fans and people who like weird Japanese games.

Oh well.  I'm always whining about Nintendo, but the truth is they're probably my favorite big video game company.  Even if they're not willing to make much effort on something they don't think will generate a lot of profit.  They need to do what they can where they can, though.  I don't think they've done themselves many favors lately.

It's also funny that because gamestop decided to do a reprint of the game it actually caused the price to go way down. Some of the prices were getting ridiculous. Same with Metroid Prime Trilogy

Awesome, I really wanted Attack of the Friday Monsters when it came out but couldn't justify the $8 or whatever it was sight unseen. Heard mixed but interesting things about Liberation Maiden and Starship Damry but I think the $3 price point is more where I would be willing to bite on those.

So..... any games going on sale this week? I want to buy something but knowing my luck it would be something that would be going on sale lol.
Level-5's Guild 01/02 games are on sale. $4.99 each (regular price $7.99)

- Crimson Shroud

- Attack of the Friday Monsters

- Starship Damrey

- Bugs vs. Tanks!

- Liberation Maiden

hmmm dont have most of the games (except Nano Assault)

thinking on Crimson Shroud, Liberation Maiden and Attack of the Friday Monsters

anyone can help with more recommendations etc?

For those games that are on sale can someone recommend me the best ones. Right now I'm looking at Attack of The Friday monsters
None of them are stellar, and some are kinda cruddy. The ones that will probably appeal to you are ones belonging to a genre that you favor.

For me, Crimson Shroud (which is a very text-heavy RPG based around pen and paper RPGs) and Attack of the Friday Monsters (extremely nostalgic, visual-novel-style RPG set in 1960s (I think?) Tokyo) were absolute must-haves. So naturally I already have them. I think everyone should buy them, but I know they're not to everyone's taste. If you need action in games, you will most likely dislike them both.

I grabbed Starship Damrey as well since it looks neat, but I know it wasn't all that well received.

I'm thinking about Liberation Maiden. I do like shooters, but I'm more into R-Type or something than these modern "bullet hell" shooters.

Crimson Shroud is a pretty good RPG that heavily favors the tabletop RPG thing, both in that it's almost overbearingly text-heavy to the point that I just played 30 minutes in my first session. The combat may be a bit more limited than you expect since you can't move, just choose attacks for specific enemies. The one issue I recall is that you can only save outside of fights and like the story bits, fights are long, so it's the sort of game that you close the 3DS until you can continue playing.

Giant Bomb has a Quick Look for Starship Damrey

I think that's actually the perfect summation of all the research I've done on these Level 5 eShop games. A number of interesting concepts that have mixed results on execution and following through on those concepts. You do have to give them credit for making a group of wildly diverse games based around various conceptual ideas by their designers and it's for those ideas that I'm interested in buying most of them.

And for releasing them in the US! Especially with text-heavy Crimson Shroud and Attack of the Friday Monsters, I have to wonder if they even broke even. (And if they did, then I wish they'd do that more often. There are about 10 Level 5 games I want badly in English.)

Man, I shouldn't have bought Crimson Shroud yesterday :(
Well, think of it this way: You're supporting a game we were lucky to get and may never get again. But if we do get more like it, your support will have helped it happen. I can't remember when I bought it, but I think it was full-price too.

I've heard some terrible things about the 3DS version of it, but for someone who's never played it, is Myst worth the discounted price?

I'm tempted on Liberation Maiden, but my gut tells me to stay away from all 3d shooters on 3ds. (Looking at you Kid Icarus and StarFox 3ds). Holding with one hand and furiously swiping and tapping the screen sound like horrible controls. Can someone provide more input on these.

I definitely got Crimson Shroud and Attack on Friday Monsters. The only other L5 game I was eyeing was Bugs vs Tanks, though it looks super crappy and reptitive.

Nano Assault retail can be had for $10 easy, but this EX version supposedly has better everything.  They have a demo available for it now, so if I love it, I guess I'll get it.  I just despise buying digital versions when physical exists for the same price.

I bought Cave Story eShop ($9.99) the day I got my first eShop money card.  I'm surprised that it's not on sale this week :)

For those that may not know them, the Guild01 (Aero Porter, Crimson Shroud, and Liberation Maiden) and 02 (Attack of the Friday Monsters, Bugs vs. Tanks, and The Starship Damrey) games are collaborations between Level 5 and some legendary creators in the Japanese gaming industry where the creator got to turn a weird idea they had into an actual game. They have a site for the games if you want to get more information on them, but I figured I'd list out the creators just in case that piques your interest in them:

Aero Porter - Yoot Saito (Sim Tower, Seaman, Odama)

Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale - Kaz Ayabe (Summer Holiday 20th Century series), His first game released outside of Japan

Bugs vs. Tanks - Keiji Inafune (Mega Man, Onimusha, Dead Rising)

Crimson Shroud - Yasumi Matsuno (Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, and Vagrant Story)

Liberation Maiden - Suda51 (Lollipop Chainsaw, Shadows of the Damned, No More Heroes)

The Starship Damrey - Kazuya Asano (Torneko)

I haven't played any of the others but Liberation Maiden is the very definition of mindless, mediocre nonsense. It's not awful but it's completely forgettable and dull.

Oh comeon, you become president of new japan and immediately go out kicking ass with ur butt sky high, what's not to like? I love the concept of these guild games and enjoy and support these developer's effort to kind of go off the deep end and try something fun/cool/new or just not fully fleshed out ideas that sounds coolers than it actually is.

Considering it's Suda51 it's probably among his least bat shit random.

Based on his approval history, translating RollingSkull's "not awful" into a numerical rating would equal an 82. I was sold after watching the video.

Completely off topic: Does anyone besides me think that Steamworld Dig looks exactly like a fleshed out, actioned-up version of Miner Dig Deep on XBLIG? It's the first thing I thought of when I saw it and scoffed at the "first game of its kind" remark they make in the video.

That's just the thing. It's not crazy. it's not weird. It's almost perfectly clinical, sterile, safe. The only remotely cool part of the game was the Japanese vocal song kicking in at the first boss. You think it will get better from there. It gets WORSE. Apart from the fact that the voice in your ear telling you what to go blow up calls you Madam President instead of Mobius or Storm One or Fox, the whole "little girl president" angle has absolutely NOTHING to do with the game. There are no villains, no characters to interact with, nothing AT ALL happens plotwise. Nothing that could be considered weird, bizarre, or trippy either.

Apart from that, it is a perfectly safe, perfectly paint by numbers shoot em up in the Star Fox mold that offers nothing in the realm of fun bosses or fun levels. it's just fly here, blow that up, repeat five times, have a soulless ugly easy boss.

On a system that ALSO has Star Fox 64 3D and Kid Icarus Uprising, there is no reason on earth to even BOTHER with Liberation Maiden. (And SF64 has aged like crap. You can skip that too unless you think really hard back to it and swear to yourself "Yes, I DO really desire another chance at SF64.")

Along with what Rollingskull said above, I personally also think Kid Icarus Uprising is a bit of a turd.  My 15 year-old Minecrafty brother sure liked it, though.

Might get all of these.

Still debating if I should get Nano Assault EX. Is there anything the retail version has that this upgrade doesn't have? Besides a physical box art and manual.

fuck yeah Crimson shroud is finally on sale again so I'll be picking that up. Now that leaves me with $25 credit to buy uhhh...I dunno. Saw some people mention Attack of the Friday Monsters so I'll check that out. Anything else?
