Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.

Oh man.. I remember buying the LE/CE of that for Xbox at around the same price on clearance at Circuit City, years ago.

I'm turning into a console retail version of MyD.
I have that game (Marc Ecko's Getting Up) from PC retail.

Yeah, you are starting to sound like me.

y u do dis spoder?

Yeah, that's the one. After seeing her in that I had wondered if she was a bad actress, but I watched Disappearance of Alice Creed soon afterward and she was good in that.
Given what I heard & read about Hansel & Gretel - figured it was *that* movie. Supposed to be horrible.

I ain't seen it yet.

But, yeah - Alice Creed was really good. I did see that one.

Wuh?

Why did my link disappear when I hit post? http://getgamesgo.com/product/london-2012
Awesome, been wanting this game for a while. I've been a sucker for poorly made sims for odd sports since California Games!

Just wanted to mention this was just released on Steam for $2 (-20%). Seems like something the maniacal members of this thread would enjoy ;)
So bot!

Posted the detailed press release on the Amazon thread but a quick recap here: Only five parties actively bid during the Amalur/38 studios IP auction. Amalur and its related IP didn't receive high enough bids to warrant a sale (lol). Rise of Nations/Legends and associated trademarks sold for $380,000. Steamalur = forever in limbo.
Hmmm, wonder how much they wanted? Like I said, Amazon DVG exclusive for the win.

Ugh, I've forced myself to play through a lot of crappy games over the years, but that's one of a handful I couldn't deal with.
Marc Eckō's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure is now on Steam and 50% off ($7.49) until the 19th.

Ha!
Awesome, I still have it on PS2 and plan to finish it, but I put in a ton of hours. dfg is just crazy if he didn't like it. crazy.

y u lie faux
y u greedy? steambox knot enuf?

I'm going to have to disagree. I think they tried to make her look even younger (Everything more rounded and softer), but in doing so, she lost something. Also, by using softer effects, it makes it more difficult to see details like mud/scars (as seen in the above images) Vs. the character model. In effect accomplishing the reverse of what the newer enhanced edition is supposed to offer (greater detail) The original is much sharper. Look at Laura's eyes in the left pic. Her eyes look as if they are searching, longing. Her eyebrows suggest she is in the middle of an emotion similar to slight confusion or bewilderment. There's a soul to be found there. Now look at the eyes of new Laura. To quote Flynn, her eyes are "lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye". Or am I the only guy that actually looks at a woman's eyes first? Updating textures is fine and understandable, but fucking around with the actual facial structure and retconning the characters look/persona is stupid, but then the look they used for the game differs from that used in the promotional art work anyway, marking this the third time they have changed her. I find it hard to invest myself in any story/character when the central players change so drastically. It cheapens the entire effort and undermines the purpose of having one (a story) to begin with.
I agree that there's more emotion or "soul" in the pic on the left, but I think the one on the right is more toward a photo-realistic direction than on the left, that's what I meant by more realistic. It does have less feeling, who knows if that's just an issue with that one shot or not, or maybe they were taken at slightly different times. I like this Lara look better than either of those:

Just to interrupt real quick, I'd like to draw attention to a little game called Savant Ascent which released a few weeks ago. I just finished playing it and had an absolute blast the whole way through! The soundtrack is awesome, the controls and gameplay feel fantastic, and though Warreni will I'm sure disagree I thought it looked outstanding. And it's MSRP is two bucks. Two freaking dollars for a lot of fun, it's definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of arcade like shooters and/or enjoy games with lots of wub wub ^_^

Still waiting on New Lara 2.0 boob shots.

I agree with you 100% on the images. The new one looks nice but really just looks soft focused which works in some places (upper lip of top images) but fails in others harder than it overall succeeds.

Old Lara vs new. I think the new one looks more realistic. I guess they'll use this face in the sequel, that's probably where they took it from in the first place. It looks almost like they copied the likeness of that actress Gemma Arterton who I just saw in some shitty movie.

All I see is the new one looks more Asian.

Edit: Didn't even notice Detruire's post.

To anyone interested in Tales of Maj'Eyal, it is a free game found here: http://te4.org/

The Steam version is just a 'donation' version so to speak (With some perks/DLC). Regardless, the game is awesome and I suggest you give it a try. I played it quite extensively for a while.

EDIT: Also all people who paid for the Indie Royale Debut 3 Bundle will receive a key. All I know is this.

EDIT: Also a sadistic amount of achievements.
Actually we already have the keys, sorta!

You register an account there, link your Steam account, and enter the activation key from Debut 3. You'll get a Steam redemption link, kinda like the Humble Bundle ones.

I've been playing the game for a bit, it's REALLY FUN if you like Roguelikes, though I find myself missing the Dredmor humor.

I think your link is wonky. Interesting background on that one, how the dev is a musician and the whole game is basically "the elevator stage". Obviously people will peg it as fundlebother, but can't be mad at that base price.

edit: Updated Lara looks uncanny-valley-anime Asian, not real-person Asian. Ew.

Or Prince of Persia? You know how awesome a movie is when you can't even remember if you've watched it or not.
Never saw PoP movie. I often am not thrilled w/ games becoming movies - they usually don't turn out well. Even Silent Hill movie - which was one of the better game-to-movie translations, IMHO - wasn't even that good.

It's just hard for a game to be a great movie, since games are so long - and movies likely only last 1 hr 30 minutes to sometimes 3 hours. That ain't enough time - most games are much bigger and much grander, often in the 6 hours to God knows what ballpark. Plus, often the interaction element us players love - yeah, that won't be in the movie. Ick.

I agree on the roguelikes thing. The game has a metric ton of variety. It can also be really damned hard and has a good amount of unlockable content.

If you've tried playing the first game and it didn't grab you, then the entire series may just be a lost cause for you.

The opening scene - the first hour even - in BioShock is pretty darn compelling in my recollection.
My problem with the first Bioshock is that back in my pre-backlog (pre-Steam, even) days I played the demo. Loved it, and bought the game the first time it went on sale for $5. I've probably tried three times since to get back to it, but since I no longer have that sense of wonder after playing the demo I never feel compelled to continue past that first hour. Also that's about where my motion sickness kicks in, usually. So Bioshock may forever sit in my backlog, along with all my other fpses I can't be arsed to fiddle around with the FOV for.

Hey, at least I got through half of Portal. And from what I can tell, the main points the first Bioshock has going for it are that first hour and some big twist later on. (No spoilers! :D:D:D) So, uh, at least I experienced half of it?

Tebow's the guy helping your character out via radio

that's not the twist though, the twist is that despite a bit of an accent he speaks perfectly good english

Edit: The only thing I really don't like about bioshock is the twist always have to do w/tebow...tebow's the guy on the radio, tebow winds up being the big daddy you play as in bioshock 2, tebows the songbird in bioshock infinite, it's always tebow, tebow, tebow...WE GET IT KEN

Bloody hell, that trickster Neuro had the nerve to give me Skyrim Legendary Edition telling me it was just Skyrim! I'll never believe a word he says again, such a crook.

So thanks for the lies (and Skyrim), Neuro.

Crazy ass Ubisoft just re-sent me my 35% off coupon code, I already received the same one from them on Dec 5th.
...and still nothing to use it on.

I completely agree. They made her look younger... in fact too young to be the grad-student-pushed-to-the-edge. I was waiting on a guy to say that first lest I be branded jealous... Also the PC-release Lara did a good job of displaying emotions, which I'm not seeing in these reworked screenshots. I live in California and mostly watch Japanese Dramas, and I think think the "more asian" comments are fairly off base.

+1 for California Games reference. And Skate or Die >> California Games.

Right, Portal 1, I was constantly on the edge of motion sick. I had to break up all of my 4 hours with it to avoid getting motion sick.

Ashes, alot of people say that it's actually the latency causing that issue and that it goes away with higher framerates such as the following quote from a topic on it at tomshardware :"The 120hz is useful in most 1st person or over the shoulder games that are controlled by mouse, from my experience.

Do you ever notice yourself feeling headaches, eye strain or nausea when playing games? I used to, and a lot of people do to some extend. I have learned over the past few years that this nausea was a result of low FPS. At 30-40 FPS, I get motion sickness badly. I found at 60 FPS, the nausea is tolerable, but I still get it after 30-45 mins. Last year, I have learned that it goes away completely when I reach 80-90 FPS with a 120hz monitor. It's possible that without v-sync, it would have gone away without the 120hz monitor (never test this), but even if it did, that means I have to live with screen tearing, which I don't like. I have realized it's not actually the FPS causing the motion sickness, but the latency, because if I'm not controlling the action, I don't experience any motion sickness (cut scenes or other people playing).

I don't think I could ever go back to 60hz now. As far as the smoothness, it is there, and seen quite clearly if you spin around fast, but most the time I didn't notice a big difference going up to 120hz, until I got used to it. Now 60hz feels a little choppy in comparison."
forum thread link

Valve also admits that fps/latency plays a role, and that relief can be had with higher than 60fps : https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8124-ISFL-6747

I myself had issues with it until I started using my 120Hz Sony Bravia as my computer monitor.

So, Neuro sold you "Lies?"

Wait - is Neuro now Lauren Mayberry? ;)

{baffled}

I don't know why I feel tempted to bite on BioShock Inf on GG for $8 (w/20%er status)... everyone raves about it, but I've been telling myself to wait for the complete/goty version due to the story DLC. (And I still haven't played BS1/2...despite owning BS1 from retail.)

...must be the gimmie-gimmie-gimme of the season getting to me. I still have to finish the last chapter of Dust, and I've got Saints Row 4 & Far Cry 3 sitting at the top of my usual massive backlog.
BioShock Infinite is very good, but I'd suggest trying BioShock 1 out first to gauge your interest. Even though there's a difference in gameplay between BS 1/2 and BS:I, they still have core similarities.

Every time I look at my massive backlog it freaks me out a little bit. I've often wondered if I'll ever play some of these games. At times wondering if I'm more of a CAC (Cheap Ass Collector) than a CAG. Or perhaps both are not dissimilar from each other.

If this helps, I didn't even like Bioshock 1 that much.
What!?! Just stop :speaktothehand:. Say no more warreni. My high self-regarded opinions can't take such a statement.

...

...
{raises hand}

That's always the first thing I look at with women, no jokes. Eyes are my favorite. Then their smile (if they're smiling), followed by whatever they're wearing at the time or showing off (in a classy but not cheap way). You can tell so much just by looking at their eyes though, which is why some actors or characters are much more believable than others. If you can act with your eyes, you can fool just about anyone into believing anything.

Eye and facial animation requires a lot of study and skill, it might be the most difficult aspect of character creation. Probably a good reason why motion capture became so popular for animation and character design work. It saved a ton on time in taking out a lot of the guess work and interpretation, giving a more life like appearance to certain characters. Kind of interesting really.

Edit: Games that really botch facial animation these days suffer immensely by ruining that line of believability and immersion for story driven games. Unless it's part of the art style and not meant to be realistic.

Unfortunate considering all the detail they put into Amalur's backstory. Too bad it wasn't a better game.

Funny all the talk about FF with me finally polishing off Final Fantasy X the other day. So, I've finished 7,9 and 10. I know I'm somewhat of a minority, but 10 was probably the worst of the bunch. I couldn't care less about the characters. I liked 7 and 9, tho. I also personally think 12 is underrated, with probably the most usable macro system in an RPG I've ever played.
Having played a lot of FF11, the battle system in FF12 felt like an offline MMO

Thanks for that! Yeah I should probably give it a shot on my 76Hz IPS monitor (2209WA, I'm an IPS die-hard, never bought a TN display, oh all the TN display's I've used I've only found two acceptable, a 17" NEC and a newer 22" HP). Yes, FPS used to be a killer, I remember, especially before 60 Hz solid fps. For me, it really varies, narrow FOV is bad for me. First-person camera is bad (over-the-shoulder is usually fine). Bouncy cameras suck (e.g. FO3). The more I have to look around (e.g. Portal & Tomb Raider Anniversary... and some very small bits in AssCred) the worse it is. This never happens to me in driving games (where the space is open, and the camera's movement is fairly slow).

At the moment I'm in a holding pattern on buying monitors... since I'm really curious about the $800 Dell P2815Q. On the 120 Hz monitor front, I'm really hoping Nvidia's Gsync technology takes off quickly... something I've been advocating for a long time... there's no fundamental reason for LCDs to have fixed refresh rates.

There's another factor that you glossed over, which is input lag on LCD displays. This is a major factor... you can really feel input lag even in normal day-to-day precision mousing. I'd been eyeing a U2313hm for that reason (though my U2412hm is no slouch).

For those who believe 60 Hz is enough, try this:

Just on the desktop of your computer, move the mouse around in a quick circle... you're see the individual positions of the mouse cursor 17 ms apart.

Just to interrupt real quick, I'd like to draw attention to a little game called Savant Ascent
Thanks! WIshlisted.

Those are two big moments, but BioShock is the rare game with several riveting setpieces or "wow" moments. I can think of at least six offhand, including the two you mentioned. I won't say more in order to avoid spoilers.

...and still nothing to use it on.
I've looked every day and still haven't found a reason to use my 35% off coupon at UPlay :(

Got tracking info for my Steam machine.. should arrive Tuesday.
Will bring popcorn.

Good, now it'll run on SteamOS.. assuming Steam gets the Linux version. If the Linux version is only on Humble, I'ma be pissed.

If you're willing to drop that kind of cash on an 8ms (the Dell) moniter, here's another option for far cheaper you could try Asus 144Hz 1ms (GTG) $280. It's an LCD/LED Backlight, but still. You're right about input lag. I also have an Asus 1ms (GTG), though it's max is 60Hz. It eliminates ghosting and has been a fantastic monitor. I flip between the two as needed. The color output on the Asus is unbelievable, but the Sony helps quite a bit when gaming and doing something potentially nauseous. I remember the original Portal being far worst than the sequel for some reason when it came to that queasy feeling. It's not exclusive to PC games either. I couldn't really play Metal Gear Solid 3 until they re-released it with the new camera options, Kojima specifically said it was because people were getting sick from moving the camera while playing.

Again, calling it a creepy furry game is a weird kneejerk reaction and pretty inaccurate.

The art style and tone is closer to early 90's animation like Fern Gully and Fivel Goes West, but a bit more self-serious.
