New Thread:

This thread has been replaced by TSDT v11

Daily Deal:
Please check the Steam homepage.

Weeklong Deals:
Steam usually has week-long deals that change on Mondays at 6PM UTC. They mostly feature indie games, and may not run every week.

Sale summary lists:

Key:
⤷ indicates DLC, — specifies part of a pack, + shows alternative versions, ⚠ highlights things worth knowing, ♫ is obvious, and ... denotes a multi-pack.

Holiday Sale 2013 | 19/12/13 through 3/1/14:
Days 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-14.

Spring/Autumn Sale 2013 | 27/11/13 through 3/12/13:
All days.

Steam deals on other stores: (Related threads on CAG.)

Indie* bundle threads: (*Not always indie, nor always a bundle.)

Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

Trying to figure out what CPU I have without opening the machine again (download some stuff and don't want to interrupt the download).

From web searching, the boxes can have a config, i7-4770, i5-4570, and i3 (not specifed).

From system settings, I can see that its a Intel processor with a base of 3.2 GHz and has 4 cores and 4 threads. I think that rules out the i7 as the base speed is 3.4 GHz I think.

I haven't been paying much attention to processors since my last pc build so hopefully someone can help me here. Do any core i3 have 4 cores and 4 threads or is that only core i5s?
Sounds like the i5. You're probably not using any Windows OS atm, but you could type dxdiag in the Start Menu and open this window.

I know this probably sounds like black magic, but if you can escape to the Linux desktop, you can run some GUI system info tool or open a command line terminal and type "/bin/cat /proc/cpuinfo" and you'll see something like the following among lots of other info:

model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz

Each core will show up as a separate processor (0, 1, 2, & 3 in my case).

FYI, I run Debian Wheezy on my desktop which is what the Steam Machines run as well.

Windows would tell you. SteamOS should think about integrating that feature.

Thanks, Linux is out of my element here (something I think Valve is trying to change) and will try that when I can get to the linux desktop.

Finding such info is trival on Windows but there are definitely many things that the SteamOS can improve upon (like info on how much hard drive space is left.)

Seems that getting to the linux desktop on SteamOS can only be done by enabling that option in the Settings. (Not on by default)

Download a program called pc wizard. It will tell you detailed info about every piece of hardware in your pc.

Like I said a few pages back, there is nothing special about a Steam machine - in fact, *that* is the whole point: open hardware with an open operating system (Linux). You can, right now, install SteamOS on that spare PC you have and, violalala, it's a Steam machine! Just like with Windows, the better hardware you have in the PC, the better your games will run. Put a "Steam" sticker on the side if it'll make it feel more authentic.

Given the state of Linux support for the billions of hardware configurations out there, unless you know what you are doing with Linux and know how to build PCs from parts, you will want to buy "certified" Steam machines from vendors. It won't matter where you buy it from: it'll still just be a PC with commodity parts. Some will look nicer, or be smaller, or whatever, but still PCs in the end.

The one special thing about it (which personally I'm not interested in) is the controller which I very much expect will be sold separately and will allow PC games that traditionally required you to be sitting in front of a keyboard & a mouse to be played from the proverbial couch.

As a long-time Unix/Linux guy who runs all his games on Linux and is happy with a regular controller, I couldn't care less for the Steam machines themselves. However, I agree with Gaben that it is important to keep the PC gaming platform open (which is what MS is moving away from), and that is what the Steam machines are designed to do. And, of course, getting all these games to run natively on Linux is the best part for me!
This is quite similar to XBMC, it was initally created for Xbox but now it can run on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, and Android. There are even NAS like Asustor with built-in XBMC running in them.

i3 are dual cores only. As for i5-4570 and i7-4770, they are both quad cores with the latter having higher clock speed and 8 threads instead of 4.

Yup. I built my own small shoebox-size Linux HTPC running XMBC a few years back. It sits behind the TV, with about a TB or two of music, movies & videos, photos, emulators & ROMs, and, more relevantly, already runs Steam and can play Linux-based indie games (thank you HB!) and many Windows games using Wine. I'm pretty sure Valve will eventually expand SteamOS to handle all your media through the Steam front-end & CDN should you want to do that.

I sit in day 2 of orientation in the same room for 8 hours listening to dumb stupidities like "remain professional at work by not cursing" and this is what I come home to?!? We need counseling. It's taking me all the restraint I have to not jump into bed w/that mediocre looking Bundlestars chick who keeps trying to stick her hands down my pants

To be fair, To The Moon doesn't have any pixel hunting, the term pixel hunt meaning that you are panning a mouse cursor around trying to find a fraction of an image to click to accomplish something, used almost exclusively as a negative term. You're instead walking your character around to interact with objects laid out on a grid. There's no precision or maddening overlooking involved. For the most part, it's "Oh hey, the rabbit's here, that's got to be one," in between dialog sequences.

I get that it's not everyone, but as someone who uses RPG Maker, I found it an interesting use of the limited tools available. I was expecting a story that tugs at the heartstrings with good music, both things I'd heard others say about it, and it delivered. Helps that I played it together with my wife. FOREVER ALONE memesters need not apply when it comes to this game. ;)
I don't think anyone can really defend the "gameplay" of To The Moon. It's certainly not a traditional RPG, but considering the time investment is so miniscule compared to an RPG, I absolutely recommend it to whomever I can. It's only ~3 hours long, but the story was a homerun for me. It's the only game I ever actually took time to "review" on steam with the caption:
"This game made me realize I'm not dead inside."

Great point. It seems silly for a "games console" to only be able to handle games now days. If it's going to sit there attached to the TV & internet it should handle all streaming-TV stuff that people do. (Well, you know people who have living rooms, TVs, or watching streaming shows. I don't have/do any of those.)

snakeybro is going make party someone tell our otheer host mysterd to get his ass on steam or aj will spank him with banderas and jenna haze aheh

Hold strong, it's just two more days till the Winter Sale! And I do believe Tony's getting the Amazon sale spreadsheet out to people very soon.

Thanks for this! I might be wanting to go the Hackintosh route in the near future and this will help a lot.

Okay, the middle click on my mouse is failing. Any suggestions on a new mouse? I'm not looking for anything incredibly showy or gaudy. Looking to spend $50.

It is frustrating that Tomb Raider has RPG elements to it. I don't want to have to decide what skills Lara needs to develop. I wanted pretty graphics, puzzles, boobs, and it to be on rails. Anything over that is too much.

Logitech G400s.

Go back a few pages in this thread. Tons of recs.
This.

But they have hyperthreading, so they'll usually show up as if they had four cores.
*mobile* i3 & i5 have hyperthreading (and only two cores). Desktop versions don't.

Just put the points wherever you feel like putting them. By the end of the game you'll have pretty much maxed out everything anyway; especially if you are fairly diligent about uncovering secrets.

What I don't like is when I buy a game on steam, and when I open it via steam, I have to go to Uplay as well.
Long-winded MysterD post on multiple DRM's on Steam-versions coming...

In many instances, though w/ Steam-versions - you are stick w/ BOTH DRM's. It annoyed me like crazy that POP: TFS from Steam used both some mild-version of UPlay and Steam.

I'd have no problem w/ a Steam-version of a UPlay game (or any other game using a Non-Steam 3rd party client program, for that matter), once I've got the game downloaded and everything from Steam - ONLY as long as Steam was NOT forced at all times to run in the background (i.e. Steamworks DRM isn't fully wrapping the game EXE or launcher EXE).

See, I have no problem w/ say, for example, Fallout 3: GOTY on Steam - b/c if worst comes to worst, you can run FO3 from the game-folder w/out Steam going; in case Steam has problems or whatever. This is true for other G4WL games on Steam, too - such as GTA4 + EFLC + RF:G). Once CEG / Steamworks DRM is wrapped around the game's EXE or launcher's EXE, then I start getting bloody annoyed - you have to now jump through numerous hoops.

Though, since G4WL is going away next year, I'd actually rather FO3 ditch G4WL entirely and get fully moved over 100% to Steamworks - like Batman: AA + AC did and Bioshock 2. Plus, FO:NV and Skyrim are already Steamworks-only, anyways.

I liked braining people with my climbing pick. I wish I got to do more of that in grad school.

What would you put in there? Psychonauts? Civilization 4? FEAR?

Definitely FEAR (original), yes.

That's one of my favorite FPS's of all time, actually.

I liked Psychonauts, but never finished it.

I have Civ 4 - but, never really touched it. Can't speak on it, honestly.

I think Guild Wars came out that year, as well.

You're completely dismissing the social aspects of (some) MMOs.
I was never a big fan of MMO's - so, that probably doesn't really help matters, either.

I recently for the 1st time ever played WOW, some months back when I got a free key from Blizz (for owning D3) - yeah, I don't get it (the appeal of WOW).

Maybe I've played too many games w/ ARPG style quests / MMO-style quests over the years or something (kill X this, get X that, go X location, etc.) It just wasn't doing much for me, for the few hours I played it. I was bored stiff.

I'll gladly take TSW over WOW.

And that's the Catch 22...

A higher end steambox (e.g. those GTX 780s) don't make sense until there are more graphically demanding Steam-Linux games. With a GTX 780 GTX & quad core i5/i7 I'd surely have a windows install so I can play all the eye-candy AAA titles. (For over a decade, I've had a win-desktop for the sole purpose of gaming... other computers for real work.)
I'm still curious how AMD Mantle will turn out for BF4.

And what OS's that Mantle will actually support.

I'm also curious, since I'm an NVidia guy, how much more performance could be squeezed out of something as graphically intense as BF4 running on something like Linux, instead of bloated-old Windows.

But you're not accounting for the discount Valve is going to get for buying all these parts in bulk. If Valve puts this thing out at over $1,000...it will fail horribly. They have to market it to people who are incapable of building their own PC...but yet are still open to having a gaming PC in their living room. If it's much higher than a Xbox One or PS4, who is going to buy it? Sure, you and I know the value of the parts inside...but you and I could order those parts and build our own PC as well. Valve has to do something to convince people that they want one of these...even if it means selling them at a loss. Otherwise, it's a waste of time.
Valve won't be manufacturing these things themselves, just these prototypes.

we want all gfwl game to go fullsteamworks or drm free cause now it doesnt like me either

I remember someone earlier linking to Tara's game of the year list and I figured it would be a typical list with the usual AAA suspects... imagine my surprise when her colleague Nick discussed his favorite top 4 games, which happen to be fairly unique (and some of my favorite games of the year as well)!

I'm with you on that.

I'm not a fan of G4WL - it causes more headaches and stupidities than you and I can even dream-up. I've had more problems w/ G4WL than any other freaking client. Not even Origin or UPlay were ever as problematic for me as G4WL.

G4WL is a disaster.

I'm usually borrowing from orcz or dgshiftcodes. It's mostly about putting them in front of people who care about them. (I dislike having to check elsewhere, imo, there should be a steam-notification for that sort of thing.)

We'll see. There is room for improvements from a better or lower-level api (It's how consoles do it. <waits to see if it gets broad support before caring too much>

I've never used DirectX, but OpenGL, while pretty neat, could use a more modern foundation.
