Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

I had no issues, though I haven't launched all of the games I transferred over. I did have some issues with a couple games not liking that they were no longer on C drive (bought an SSD) but that's about it.

I guess I should respond since I was mentioned. ;)

I didn't do a fresh install from Win7 to Win8, just installed on top and most games worked okay. As you mentioned Doom Rails is an odd one that doesn't, and don't expect a fix I think the dev moved on. Also The Sims Medieval if you patch or get the expansion uses a version of Securom that's incompatible with Windows 8. EA apparently has no interest in fixing it but since the issue is directly related to Securom there are, ahem, ways around it.

Pretty much everything else worked fine. I think a few needed to be set to Windows 7 or XP compatibility mode but the vast majority did not. If there's a specific game you're concerned about you can try checking the Steam community forum for that game and if there's an issue it's guaranteed someone will have mentioned it there, but just in general the majority of games (and I own way too many) I didn't have any issues with when I moved to Windows 8.
Thanks for the info. Motoki and Corpekata. I have a little over 5 TB of games installed so the thought of re-installing everything has zero appeal making a fresh install out of the question. I use to do fresh OS installs every three months or so back in the XP days but once you become a game hoarder, the appeal is done since I like to be able to play anything at any time and finish nothing... Is there such a thing as 'Gamer ADHD'? I can't focus on a single game for a long period of time if it is over 10 hours except for Battlefield series. I am glad to hear the upgrade sounds pretty smooth for the most part. I am seriously considering upgrading to windows 8 but am still not sure if the upgrade is worth it. Thanks again.

The only achievements I ever cared about were ones that had an in-game reward some like of the TF2 unlocks. The rest I don't care about -- no one is going to look at my achievements library and say "Wow, this guy is amazing!" and I don't think any better of myself for getting them so why bother.

I'll agree with Fox that some of the passive ones are a nice surprise, especially when they hint that you did something unusual or off the normal track (say, one for examining a painting in a FPS) but if I already know that collecting 20 widgets will get me a momentary blurb saying I got "Widget Hunter" then, eh, I'm fine.
Shit, I would.

I derive enjoyment outta gunning for achievements, but I'm glad I'm (still) rational enough to know when they would significantly detract from that enjoyment (e.g. speedrun-type chvs for Braid, LIMBO, DLC Quest = no thanks). My preoccupation with them has affected my queue choice, though, for better (small, short indies from bundles) and worse (Alan Wake). But it's also been fun to hook up with other seekers/whores in organized events.

Tried Valdis Story. I must say it's a pretty good metroidvania with a fuck ing god tier soundtrack. Really glad I spent the $3.50 or whatnot on it. The soundtrack makes the game very relaxing to play.

Also  fuck  Ubisoft and their shitty cables. That Rocksmith cable apparently has issues where sometimes it just stop being recognized and you have to reboot. Oh well, game runs fine besides that.

do you guys thing that with the steam box coming out that there will be more local co op on pc. I mean I assume most people use a 360 controller with pc so why remove local co op. I had a friend come over and most of the games only has online support so I had to switch to a super nintendo for multiplayer.

I hope so. I have around 40 local co op steam games and always have a bunch of them ready for spontaneous play. I showed a buddy Divekick last week and we were both rolling with laughter.

And LOL a different friend was stoked about picking up a N64 with Mario Kart. Those old systems just had this stuff down. They had to without online!

I will get that Genesis pack from Amazon one stinking day!!!

40??? I'm not sure I even knew there were that many. What are your favorites? I miss local co-op from the days I used to have friends to play with. Now everyone has families and lives far away. Bah humbug.

I usually play my genesis when I have people over. Streets of Rage 2 just too good. But I felt like playing some Donkey Kong and TMNT 4. Also I always hated the n64 controller. PS1 4 Lyfe

My personal opinion is that I think it depends if Valve can get their shit together with the streaming option because the library of Linux games is way too limited and they also need to come up with lower cost options.

I think if they had a lower end machine hardware-wise that could do indie and low requirement stuff on the machine and then do the AAA stuff through streaming like Shield or Onlive then it might take off. But at $500+ for just the Linux library of games on Steam? I don't see that becoming mainstream.

If they could compete on the lower end against say Ouya and the Vita TV (if that ever happens) and bring in good quality streaming for the entire Steam library of games they I think they'd really have something.

They don't seem to be moving in that direction yet though.

Until and unless the steambox really takes off I don't think local co-op is going to be a major factor on Steam because I don't think the majority of people are interested in playing local co-op on their main PC and HTPC is still a niche thing.

I bought Genesis in protest when Nintendo decided to delay SNES release in Canada. As soon as they announced SNES release I pre-ordered at Toys R Us and sold that Genesis faster than you can say "Whoa nice graphics!"

Divekick, Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light, Magicka, Monaco, Dead Pixels, Nation Red

There's board game like stuff with Ticket to Ride and Greed Corp.

The thing I don't understand is that there are games that have local co op on the 360 but for some reason the the pc counterpart that supports 360 controllers has it removed.

The thing is, most console games as well are moving away from local multiplayer. There's a few lately where the console version has it but the PC doesn't, but not many these days. So I don't think PCs being more couch friendly will have much of an effect. Off the top of my head the only release I can think of this year was Splinter Cell that had it on consoles but not PC.

There are still quite a few good games with it coming out. Forced is one of the best local co-op games around, been playing it a lot with my brother the last few weeks. Samurai Gunn is awesome, but really needs 4 players. Nidhogg is finally coming out and has extremely positive word of mouth.

I still have my Genesis although it's in the garage and probably infested with earwigs or something. Time to sell it on Craigslist for $200 -- "Real Genesis System w/ Sonik Game RARE!!!!!"

When my brother and his gal were over during the holidays, we pulled out the GameCube controllers for local multiplayer. Mario Kart and Smash Bros, good times.

I was always confused to hear people whine that console games with local multiplayer lacked online multiplayer, particularly back in the day when console online services were terrible.

I am always conflicted when it comes to using outside resources when playing a game but if I don't use them then I inevitably end up playing the game wrong. When I started Uncharted I didn't know I was supposed to be looking for stuff to pick up/collect and got through much of the game before I discovered this. I have since gotten stuck at a point where I can't get through an area without getting killed (because I suck at shooting things) so I don't care anymore but I was frustrated at the time and had to tamp down my OCD in order to avoid starting completely over. I guess you have to read something about proper game play or just wing it and take what you figure out.
This happened to me with Megaman Legends back on the PS1. I was in, I want to say, the second-to-last cave system when I discovered that I was supposed to be looking at the poorly polygon mapped walls for cracks to inspect for crafting materials. I'd been finding them in other settings like the city, but I had no idea that the cave walls were interactive. Blah, early 3D games. Never ended up finishing because I couldn't decide whether to see the game to the end or go back to all the old areas.

I love Megaman Legends. Yeah, you missed so many things if you didn't check the cracks.

That's right... I remember now. I wrote a post about how its had had such a massive price drop in less than two months that its going to get bundled rather soon. (Contrast.)

That's not the classic edition of 2013... Meaning the DLC isn't included. Its 15 bucks for the upgrade that includes both of them so consider yourself warned. :D

Whose on first?

Jeremy Clarkson is because Top Gear is the only thing worth watching on BBC...
uum i think cheap like fox might have some for cheaper

I'm still bummed RockBand never made it to PC, that is easily one of the best coop games of all time. I'd say I've likely spent more time playing it than any other game or series ever. So many good memories, a shame it pretty much dropped off the face of the earth a few years ago.

You missed out on some really great games then! I have both of those systems and I still think it was one of the greatest eras of videogaming.

Of couse, many of the great Genesis games have made their way to the SEGA packs on Steam, but there were so many more: Gaiares, Ranger X, Thunder Force III and IV, MUSHA, Mega Turrican, and, of course, Herzog Zwei.

Dafuq all y'all on about? You're PC Master Racers. If you really want to play console games with your friends, buy a raspberrypi and load it with thousands of emulated games. You can probably fit every Genesis, NES, N64, and Atari game on the included SD card. It runs on a Linux distro.

Sorry, Blade.  I'm a Nintendo fanboi first, an Atari gitoff-mah-lawner second, and a Steam whore third.

Anyone ever shop with G2play.net?  If so how did it go?  I have an order pending (aka the queued it) and now I'm a bit curious how legit/slow/unprofessional they are...

If you wonder why I didn't ask before shopping....  Well, its .65 cents via paypal so the risk seems to be nearly non existent.

Edit:  Legit it seems.  I'm a bit surprised that they sent me a picture of the CD Key from the box but, it worked, so I'm happy.  :)

For everyone that Kickstarted The Banner Saga, Steam Keys are now available at the dev's site. Just log into your backer account and it'll appear there.

The game is pre-loadable but won't be accessible until the 14th.

I think Dark Souls is an acquired taste.

Basically - it's built for gamers who love those brutal old-school games like the old NES days and want to learn patterns and repeat areas...b/c you will DIE A LOT.

I'm terrible at the game - but like them old-school games that I love, they are so tough that a victory is the most rewarding feeling that this game can give.

You basically have to play like you have unlearned EVERYTHING from the last decade or so of gaming. Do not expect maps, quest-logs, hand-holding, and a difficulty slider.
I've said before, I'd love this game if I had more time to play, but I don't.

I quit the game after getting killed by the rooftop gargoyles. I just can't keep replaying the same levels over and over, and I'm too prideful to watch walkthroughs.

Heh... Just overheard a console gamer friend of mine getting excited about how cheap Lego Marvel Super Heroes is at $30 :)

I remember those days :)
I spend a lot of time on a Playstation forum and they often get worked up over "great" 10% off discounts. I pointed out that 10% is pretty bad and some guy challenged me on that, crazy ass consolers.

How quaint. I bet they don't even know that they're supposed to get really angry when a game goes on sale for a second time at the same price on PSN.

Thanks! I just went fishing for my Banner Saga and Wasteland 2 keys this weekend. No dice.

10% can almost be achieved by dodging sales tax... (This makes a sizeable dollar difference on expensive stuff like Photography gear.)

I got my 14 year old a Playstation Plus subscription for Christmas.  We're looking at the 'free' games and I say he should just 'buy' all of them so they're in his library.  He's like "Eh, this one is a racing game and I don't care about those."

"Well, get it anyway in case you change your mind"

"But I'll never play it"

"So what?  It's free, just buy it"

"Nah"

"IT'S LIKE TWO BUTTON PRESSES WHY WON'T YOU JUST PRESS THE TWO BUTTONS??"

"Whatever.  Calm down, old man..."

Speaking of Kickstarter, if you backed Broken Age you can claim your key page at Humble right now. Sign-in with the email you gave Kickstarter and go to your account page and then click the plus icon in the upper right of the box that says "Claim Past Purchases."

There's nothing there yet, but a Steam key should be available tomorrow for the beta. The game should be feature complete so you're not missing any story or puzzles. I think the beta is more about ironing out last minute bugs and testing across lots of different configurations.

Your son has excellent taste.

To be fair to them, PC gaming is a big initial investment compared to consoles.
I think of it this way; at the very least you'll need some sort of computer for work/school/whatever, that's about $400. If you want a console that's another $300 (or more for the new ones). If you just combine those two prices you can get one super machine that does everything, and after that, it's all savings.

Or at least that's what I told myself when I got my desktop last year instead of [second cheapest laptop at Best Buy]. "And it'll be good for the economy."
