Steam usually has week-long deals that change on Mondays at 6PM UTC. They mostly feature indie games, and may not run every week.

Steam deals on other stores: (Related threads on CAG.)

Indie* bundle threads: (*Not always indie, nor always a bundle.)

Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

Yay! I can put off playing Dark Souls that much longer. And before all you DS fanatics jump down my throat, I have commitment issues. AAA titles in my library scare me. It's at the top of my AAA backlog, though.
If you play it now, you get those soon to be rare cheevos.

The current Poll of the Day at GameFAQs is relevant to our interests.
I chose the response that is in da lead right now
The current top response is "It's fine, although I worry it could be abused by big-name publishers". It's funny because Ubisoft and a couple other publishers did 'pre-order and get beta access now' on Steam before the Early Access days and no one complained even though it's essentially the same thing phrased a different way.

Also a big publisher seems much more likely to deliver a 'finished product', even if it's still buggy and not amazing, than an indie is.
Dark Souls and Ace Combat are officially going to have GFWL removed. Full list here (most of it is old info though):

What is their source? It was going around a while back that Dark Souls would have GFWL remove based on a screen cap of a supposed Facebook page but that turned out to be a troll hoax.

Edit: "Joystick reached out to get the official word" Hmm, yeah. No names or quotes or links and who knows who their source is. Hopefully it will happen anyway but their journalism and citing of sources leaves a bit to be desired.

Their source is themselves and the publisher, I guess. They were the ones that reached out to the publisher.

As new is Codemasters is going to remove GFWL from F1 2010 and F1 2011? I'm not inclined to believe this. F1 2010 on steam patches through GFWL. They are also several year old titles in an "annual sports franchise".

This! (GFWL removal stuff)

I really don't understand why the hell "It's fine, although I worry it could be abused by big-name publishers" is the leading thought... I trust that a big pub will actually ship their finished game and wont release it too prematurely.

Battle Tick-Tack-Toe Early Access

We've implemented the grid and the X's but we need your funding to implement the O's and some gameplay mechanics...

I think it's the same stuff we were seeing a couple of years ago in the wake of Double Fine's Kickstarter. People were panicking that EA was going to start demanding people pay for games before they were started. People like to get scared.

I'd be much more worried about smaller devs making promises they're not planning, or not equipped, to keep. The shady stuff we've seen with games on Steam seem to come from smaller devs and pubs like with Ashes Cricket or WarZ/Survivor Stories.

I still don't understand that...

That's the point I was implicitly making... I have no data/background/reputation on which to trust many of the smaller devs on Early Access. I don't trust them to actually finish or ship those games. Early Access seems like the perfect dumping ground for nice game ideas that didn't pan out.

Beta access for stuff like BF3 and 4 and early access are two completely different beasts IMO.  Technically, anything could happen and some big name devs have gone belly up recently, but I'm not too worried.  If I pre-order a big name game for the beta access and the company goes belly up, I can just get my money back from the retailer most of the time.  Most devs don't put up pre-orders until the game is within a reasonable release date anyway.  Early Access is just stuff that has no guarantee to ever be released and it's many times years away from being a game that should be sold.  I've still supported some early access games and I won't be up in arms if they go belly up (I half expect it for some of them), but it's just two completely different things.

As long as I  get something I feel is worth whatever I spent in exchange for Early Access, then I have no problem with it.

I use the same criteria I use to decide on Kickstarters... has the dev done awesome stuff before? Do I trust them to deliver?

(My sole exception was The Banner Saga... because I really want to see more classic animation in games.)

[Cross posted on Amazon PCDD Thread]

I've been getting back into The Secret World recently and I'd like to give a little something back to the CAG community. So, I'm having a little contest where I am giving away 5 codes for the game (not steam unfortunately, 4 amazon and 1 retail box).  Here are the rules:

1) Contest starts now

2) Contest ends on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at midnight pacific time.

3) PM me for one entry (Mulitple PMs do not lead to multiple entries and may lead to disqualifications)

4) Each entry will be assigned a number based on the order it is received. (but having an early entry does not give you any benefits)

5) You can get 1-4 additional entries by including in your pm: faction you think you'd play (1 extra), deck you like (1 extra) and an explanation of why (1-2 subjective extra entries based on how much I like the answer - you don't need to write an essay, just something interesting)

6) When I have a chance on Monday (no specific time, I have to work, but hopefully around 6pm pacific). I will announce the winners in both the Amazon PCDD thread and the Steam thread. I will also pm the winners. The winners must pm me back to claim the code by Sunday, January 26, 2014 at midnight pacific time. If anyone does not, I will pick another winner for their code.

7) Winners will be chosen by random number generator. For example if you are the 5th person to pm me, I assign number 5. If you include the faction you want, you get number 6. Include the deck and an explanation that I like, you get 7, 8, and 9. I will set the random number generator based on the number of entries and if your number comes up, you win.

8) No more than one code can be won by an account.

9) I hope this is enough, but I reserve the right to change the rules at any time. I don't have any plans to, but I've never run something like this before so there may be problems I have not anticipated.

10) These are all US keys, I'm not sure how it works if you are not in the US.

Requests - I'm not going to enforce these in anyway, but it would be nice if:

1) If you win, you use a trial from me before you sign up permanently so I can get the veteran points or whatever it is.

2) If you win, you add my character ("Pyrmancer") in game (you can ignore, me but if you're interested, I'm always happy to help out in the early areas)

3) If you already have the game, it's fine if you give the code to a friend, but it would be nice if you add my char in game and ask the person who gets the code to do this as well.

4) [maybe I'll think of other things]

Speaking of Early Access games, Assetto Corsa had a pretty sizeable update today:

- AI & Race Events
- End Race simulation
- Session Ranking app fixes
- Driver Names displayer
- Proximity Indicator & damage displayer follow GUI
- Small GUI fixes
- Special events have pre-determinate parameters such as Temperature
- Warning for high CPU occupancy
- Real time position
- Steam Achievement fixes
- fixed suspension animator in replay
- chase camera shake parameters exposed in launcher
- Modifications on tyre model combined forces grip. Tyres more sensitive in combined forces, cars more sensitive under braking and acceleration. Resulting in use of traction control more interesting even on racing cars
- Modifications on tyres heating modeling.
- BMW Z4 35is drift upgrade
- BMW M3 E30 group.A is now the early model with less power and no ABS plus chassis modifications and 5 speed gearbox
- BMW M3 E30 DTM version is now an upgrade to the early model and retains only the 6 speed gearboxes.
- BMW 1M series
- Lotus Evora GTE
- Modifications on Ferrari F40 suspension toe links
- Modifications on Tatuus FA01 aerodynamic drag.
- BMW Z4 35is toe fixes and tyre compound fixes
- Pagani Zonda R ABS levels
- Ferrari 599XX Evo default alignment setup modified to cure oversensitive steering.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Age of Conan MMO? I'll add it to my account, but I'm wondering how big the download is (more or less), how it compares to The Secret World and what the community is like.

Company of Heroes 2 Digital Collector's Edition $13.59 (89% off) on Amazon.

They've obviously matched the regular edition price against the DCE (which, of course, is not a complete edition.)

When it was P2P I played the trial a few times, I actually liked it. But apparently many people disliked the amount of endgame content and content in general. So I think it's a rather short but sweet ride.

if anyone is looking for an awesome sci fi first person MMO, the kind where you drop everything when you die and everyone can attack everyone everywhere (there are npc guards though, but that's about it), Neocron 2 just went free to play.

I had a blast playing the open beta of that game, but it was during a time when P2P was not an option for me so I had to quit after that. It's also a very mature game, features strip clubs and stuff like that. Go check it out ;)

Damn, January indie gala had deadly premonition added to it. It's actually getting to be a pretty decent bundle.
Pretty happy I got in on it. Is there ever any indication how many additional games will be added to these bundles or is it a crapshoot?

For Indie Gala...

Plus 3 MORE STEAM GAMES to be unlocked SOON for all BTA buyers!

One of the unlocks has speculated to be Rush Bros.

Wallace & Gromit is now gone from the remaining digital stores and doesn't seem like it'll return.

Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures has been withdrawn from sale on digital distribution platforms due to the expiration of our digital distribution agreement with Aardman Studios. We currently do not have any plans to renew this agreement at this time.

I don't recognize anything outside of Deadly Premonition. What else is good on there?
I've had my eye on Tales of Maj'Eyal for awhile, it's supposed to be a pretty good roguelike. Ravensword Shadowlands and Ballpoint Universe are on my wishlist, as well. None of the games outside of Deadly Premonition are well known, but there's a few that are worth buying the bundle for.

Dark Souls and Ace Combat are officially going to have GFWL removed. Full list here (most of it is old info though):

AWESOME ! :D

EDIT:

Now, what we need - is a G4WL-to-Steam save-conversion built in-game for Dark Souls.

Sure, some modders will probably come up w/ it - but, it'd be nice if it was officially done.

I do NOT wanna re-start Dark Souls w/ a new char...until I finish it once, of course.
