Only new things of note I've had lately are Green Flash Symposium was was awesome (earthy, super hoppy IPA) and Brooklyn Oktoberfest which was alright.  Had both in growler.

Otherwise just a bunch of the usuals--Stone IPA, Dale's Pale Ale, Sam Adams Octoberfest and Boston Lager, Bell's Amber Ale etc., and some seasonal favorites like Dogfish Head Punkin and Southern Tier Pumpking.

Man, Id be really nice if 3Floyds was available here in Jersey. I was able to finally get my hands on a bottle of Zombie Dust though and it was quite good. That Sierra Nevada Beer Camp set is really good. Loved the red ale and the black ipa

Had the Founders Mango Magnifico the other day. Really good. had a really up front spiciness to it with a little sweetness as well. Gonna crack open the Latest Stone Enjoy By after dinner tonight. .

 
Long time no see - I just haven't been frequenting CAG as much since the changeover.

Usuals for me too - Sam Adams Oktoberfest case we picked up at Costco just doesn't do it for me this year though for some reason. Having a get together this Sat. though so that'll help knock it out! Maybe it's all the bourbon I've been drinking lately instead. I did have a nice Founders Doom a couple weeks ago - didn't think I'd like it at first but it turned out to be great with a cigar.

Got some Pete's Wicked clone bottled and nothing fermenting at the moment. Been busy with travel and events and such but hopefully we can get something brewing this Sunday - me and my wife talked about just getting a brown kit and turning it in to a pumpkin ale - or trying at least. Hell I haven't even had a pumpkin beer yet this year - need to pick up *something* pumpkin - and pull out that  2012 Pumpking from the stash - there may even be a Punkin' stashed somewhere too.

Oh yeah - we had a huge Stone Brewing week long event throughout our state when they finally began being distributed here (AL) and it was nice - there were folks from the brewery and various reps. I went to an event at a Piggly Wiggly - mainly because they were sampling Vertical Epic 06 and 12 among their various year round and some season selections (nice cheese platter too! ;) ) Went in to pick up something and behold! one of the reps was pulling 06 Vertical Epics out of a box. I said "Are those for sale?" he said "Yep - we have a case of each (06 and 12)." Needless to say, I was excited - when can you walk in to a store and pick up a 7 year old beer for 9.49?!? I got a 12 too - my wife loved that xmas spice thing they had going with the 12.

 
Take the black is to be shipping this month.  It is the second of the Game of Thrones beers.  Has anyone seen it on shelves yet?

 
I couldn't be happier. Walking down the beer isle at Publix and I spot Fat Tire. It used to be unavailible down here in Florida. I got a couple 6 packs right away. It's still as good as I remember it. I don't think I'll be buying much of anything else from now on.

Also started drinking Narragansett. It's cheap beer but tasty. A friend told me it's the beer Quint was drinking in Jaws. Kinda cool.

Supposed to hit Denver next week according to my buddy. So anytime I guess? I'm having him grab me a bottle to go with my Blonde. I think I am going to cellar every release until they are done then have a tasting of every single one with some of my craft drinking friends. :D

On a side note getting some more harder to find beers next week. Pliny The Elder (it will be my 2nd time having this wonderful wonderful beer), 2 bottles of Rumpkin from Avery (very excited to finally get my hands on this) and a bottle of Evil Twin Biscotti Break. :D It is definitely porter and stout season for me (we got our first snowfall for the fall/winter just yesterday). Also on my last trip to Denver I picked up:

Avery Momi Hiwa (Barrel Aged Coconut Porter) *This was a trade with my buddy since this is long gone. ;)

Avery Uncle Jacobs Stout

New Belgium Lips of Faith Coconut Curry Hefe - I had this on tap in August at NB, very different and it exceeded any and all expectations for me. Not much of a coconut taste on the palate but the spice of the curry made this a very different wheat beer.

New Belgium Lips of Faith Yuzu - This one is a sour and pretty basic in terms of that style.

New Belgium Le Terroir - Dry Hopped Sour. I've recently become more intrigued with this style and supposedly this is one of the best ones out there. They don't brew this very often so it is fairly uncommon.

Bruery Batch 1000 Bryeian - My buddy from college actually brewed this one. He and his co-brewer won a contest and got flown out to The Bruery in Orange County and made this beer. It is pretty damn amazing.

Anyways it is essentially a Dark Rye IPA but since the Bruery doesn't really do hoppy beers and my buddy snuck one in on them, they classify it is as a Hoppy Rye Ale. Tomato To mato

On the tasting front I recently tried:

Avery Dugana - IPA in a 22oz bomber. This was quite the treat. I normally get their IIPA (Maharajah) but I think I have been converted. This was just delicious and will be my go to IPA for a while. Too bad it is a once a year release rather than a year round one. Guess I have to hoard it. ;)

Avery's Beast Grand Cru - A monster at 18%. I was not properly prepared and gravely underestimated this beer. Drinks a lot like a whiskey in my opinion. Got a raisin and date flavor with a lot of alcohol taste. I had to split the 12oz bottle because drinking the whole thing would have given me bad heartburn :razz:

New Belgium Trip XVII - This is a collabo with Elysian out of Seattle. I assume it is only released in Seattle and Fort Collins. This one was a Segal Ranch Cascade Rye IPA. It was not what I was expecting. That is a good thing though. This one wasn't really citrusy but more earthy and a tiny bit spicy. I rather enjoyed this, too bad the trip series are all limited and I probably won't get my hands on another bottle. :(

I have poker night tomorrow with a few of my buddies so I don't know what I am going to bust out of the cellar to try... Probably a stout or porter though :D

Looks like Ommegang Take The Black Stout (the GoT Beer) just hit Denver yesterday and today just in time for GABF so it should be starting to hit shelves in other parts of the country.

Speaking of GABF is anyone going?  I regrettably cannot go due to being in charge at our business while my parents are on vacation.  :cry:

 
Lucked into Ommegang Game of Thrones Take the Black Stout on tap yesterday. Pretty damn good.

Also had the New Belgium Lips of Faith Coconut Curry Hefeweizen the other day. Better than it sounds, but still not my cup of tea.

I had Stone's Enjoy by 11.12.13 (Double IPA) last Friday. Pretty damn tasty. I've got one more bomber for myself and one more for a friend.

Also, I've been meaning to ask, would any CAGs be interested in doing some beer trading? I figured since we're so spread out, it's a perfect way for us all to try beers from around the country. I've got a couple of bombers of Dreadnaught ready to go. :)

I'm dying to try some of Three Floyds' Beers. I'm able to get some Odell's Bombers if you are interested and have a few of Avery's Barrel Aged Series as well. :D Also should be getting my hands on some Goose Island Lolita (Raspberry Sour) this week :)

I will also be hitting up Denver in 2 weeks and will be doing lots of beer shopping, My buddy has gotten me the following so far: Evil Twin Biscotti Break (Very Excited to try this), Pliny The Elder, Avery Rumpkin, Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head Life & Limb 2 and a couple others he won't tell me what they are.

Dark Lord? Ha, I wish! :) I'm going to try to get tickets for Dark Lord Day next year, but I hear that it's no easy task. But I do have some of their other stuff. Currently in the cellar: Deesko, Calumet Queen, Blackbeard, Broo Doo and Munsterfest. Dreadnaught I can get any time. Same with Pride and Joy, Jinx Proof and Robert the Bruce. Zombie Dust and Gumballhead are hard to get, but not impossible.

And I wouldn't be opposed to any Odells beers. The guy at work would love me for it. Not a fan of the Lolita though. We get a lot of Goose Island here in Indy (plus I'm from Chicago), and I love most of their beers, but the Lolita just wasn't for me. Now the Sophie... that's some good stuff.

Let me know if you'd be interested in making some trades. I know packing/shipping can be a pain, but they do make special boxes/packaging to make it easier. I'll swing by the liquor store later tonight and see what goodies they have. :)

I'd be interested in Zombie Dust, Dreadnaught, and if you are able to get it Arctic Panzer Wolf.

For Odell's beers I am able to snag: Amuste (Their Porter with Grape Juice), Celestrina (Saison) and it is almost 2 years old but as you know it can age: Deconstruction. Also if you like IPA I also have easy access to Grand Teton's Pursuit of Hoppiness and Snake River's Pako's IPA :D

Let me know what you find and what you would want. I am totally down to make some trades :D

I assume New Belgium stuff is easy to come by since they pretty much distribute almost everywhere now. I can still get a few older Lips of Faith Beers (Paardebloem and Pluot and maybe a few Cascara Quad as well). I also have a Biere De Mars and a Imperial Coffee Stout in my cellar (both are extras).

I'd be down for trading! I wouldn't mind getting my hands on some 3 Floyds. We don't get Odell in Jersey, but I do have a bottle of their Myrcenary double IPA that I acquired through a trade that im willing to part with. We got some good stuff up here in Jersey, so shoot me a pm if you're interested.

 
Sorry guys, I haven't been ignoring you. I asked the guy at work for some advice, since he's definitely the senior beer snob. :) I'm definitely looking forward to trying some new stuff though.

I stopped by the liquor store earlier and I was in heaven. Grabbed 2 6-packs of each Gumballhead and Alpha King. Also grabbed a bomber of BrooDoo. Was going to grab a few other bombers, but I've spent too much already. :/

Drank some more of my Leinenkugels as well. The Orange Shandy is meh and Hoppin Belle's isn't half-bad. Not great stuff, but still a nice beer. Also, I visited the Minhas brewery in Wisconsin a few weeks ago and grabbed a sampler to take home. I must say, it's not very good. I had a few OK samples at the brewery, but the ones I took home were subpar. The brewery was cool, but I likely wouldn't drink any more of their stuff.
 
Well my interests appear to be shifting towards bourbon. I went to Chattanooga,TN to visit some friends and to the Oktoberfest event downtown last Sat. and Sun. I had a few different local brews from Chatt. Brewing, McHales and from the homebrew booth (really cool they let homebrewers vend their own beer!) The highlight was a *real* funky homebrew Oktoberfest that smelled suspicious ?!? (confirmed by three friends.) It was spiced up and had a nice kick to boot.

I also had dinner at Terminal Brewhouse - hands down the best local beer in Chattanooga. Good food too (I had the lamb burger my wife had the buffaloaf.)

But... I only picked up a Four Roses single barrel from a local liquor/beer store because there wasn't any beer that really caught my eye.

Tried a Green Flash Green Bullet - their triple IPA. It was real nice - ripped the enamel right off my teeth! 10.1 and could taste the alcohol.

Got a Lagunitas IPA clone fermenting right now. Dry hopped with some leftover hops from a previous brew that I forgot to put them in.

Picked up a half case of SN pale ale cans today because it was on sale (12.99!) and man that stuff is just so easy to drink!

Picked up a 4-pack each of the Sierra Nevada Narwhal Imperial Stout and the Founders Harvest Ale. Also walked into a ma and pa liquor store and snagged me the last two Firestone Double DBA's they had left. Been knocking off stuff from my beer bucket list the last few weeks. Finally got to try the Pliny the Elder the other week. Thought it couldn't get any better until last week when I got to try the Heady Topper. Both are excellent but I would have to give the edge to the Heady.

 
I picked up some Leinenkugel Snowdrift Vanilla Porter the other day.  I have to see it was really good.  I might have to start checking out some other porters.  If they are anywhere near as good as this or better I may start drinking them over a stout.

I also picked up Stone Brewing Co's R&R Coconut IPA.  I didn't taste any coconut in it or any thing else they said was in it.  All I could taste were the hops.  I'm not a big IPA fan as I don't like to taste nothing but hops however I have started to drink some and didn't think they were that bad.  This one wouldn't have been bad if it weren't for the fact that I was expecting something other than hops.  Hell I would have been happy for just a hint of a taste.  I should have read all of the label when I picked it up.  I didn't notice it was an IPA till I started to drink it.  Not bad if you like an IPA but don't expect anything other than hops.

Also does anyone else use untapped?

 
Any homebrewers have advice on starter kits?

I want to get my dad one for Xmas.  I know nothing about it, but his uncle started doing it and he's been interested in trying it, so figured it's a good gift idea.

 
The basic starter kits from Midwest supplies or Norther brewer would be fine. Keep in mind he'll need a big pot for boiling the wort (5-7.5 gallon) which the kits don't come with (there are actually a lot of things the kits don't come with and you find out after your first brewing session or two that you need this or that doo-dad). I'd start with an ale recipe kit (and if he's interested - a pale or IPA because they mask any off flavors you might get for various reasons better than other beer styles.) Ales because they ferment at normal-ish temps of 65-70 degrees.

To be honest, local homebrew shops (lhbs in brewing forum lingo) really are a good option in this situation. I buy *everything* online usually but many things are actually cheaper from the homebrew store. And the kit ingredients are fresh - they crack the grains right there in front of you. So if he has a local homebrew shop you might get him a gift certificate there even. Also - the owners are likely a wealth of info and willing to chat about anything.

My little setup differs slightly from the typical kit. I brew half batches - where the typical batch is 5 gallons - I do 2.5. The local store halves most any kit so it's pretty easy. I use a mr. beer keg for fermenting and a 4 gallon icing bucket I picked up free from the bakery at Publix as a bottling bucket (I added a spigot.) Batch priming is much easier than bottle priming. We got this nice All Clad pasta pot for our wedding and never used it. Now it has a use as a brew pot. We use our sink and ice/ice packs to chill our wort. I use brown/amber flip top Grolsch style 16 oz bottles but I do cap 3-6 12oz bottles for giving away to friends. The Grolsch bottles are easy - but capping isn't hard either.

This setup is very easy for me and my wife to manage in our kitchen. 2.5 gal means less wort to heat, less wort to chill, less beer to bottle (less beer to drink?!?) ultimately less time really. Most of the homebrew community will argue it doesn't take that much more time, effort, cost to do 5 gal but for us this is what works. We can go through the beer a bit quicker and try new recipes and ultimately (I feel) learn a bit quicker.

This is an excellent and free online book all about brewing - your dad may want to read the first section/chapter on extract brewing. It does a very nice job of demystifying the whole process. http://www.howtobrew.com/

(I'm just tacking things here as I think of them) Cleanliness/sanitizing is very important. Consistent fermenting temp. (esp. the first couple days) is very important. No-rinse sanitizer is nice. Bottle tree is nice (friend gave me one.)

I ended up going with the $79.99 kit from Northern Brewer, picked the Irish red kit as the included one, and also added the Dead Ringer IPA kit and a 5 gallon brew kettle.  Found a coupon to knock 10% of the kettle and add a free homebrewing 101 dvd.

I checked Midwest too, but their shipping was crazy ($30 something) while Northern has a $7 flat rate promo going.

 
If you like rogue a company sells kits for their beer also. I forgot what the name of the company is but the beer tastes dead on the what you will get from them. I made the dead guy ale, only issue was I had to leave it in the bottle longer than the recommended time the kit had.

Has anyone tried the chocolate wheat shock top is posting about?
 
After more than 2 months of sitting in my closet, I finally pulled out the beer making equipment the guy at work lent me. Made my first batch yesterday. It's an American Pale Ale that's loosely based off of a recipe that a local brewery (Bier Brewery) used to sell. It's fermenting now. I'll move it to the carboy for the 2nd fermentation in a few days, then I'll be able to bottle it sometime next week. Then it has to age for several weeks after that. :( It's going to be a long wait, but I imagine that once I get somewhat good at it, I'll be able to brew a batch (5 gallons, or 53 bottles) every 10 days or so.

For those of you thinking about it, it's really not that hard. The guy at work gave me his equipment, but you can find second hand stuff on the cheap. You could probably brew your first batch for about $150, then about $40 per batch after that. And total time investment, I would say all the way through bottling, is probably about 6 hours. Nothing bad at all. Also, don't worry about space or smell. You don't need much space (I live in an apartment) and the smell is actually quite pleasant.

21st birthday today! Woo! Won 7 bucks on a lottery ticket (Yes I'm proud of it!) and get to try Arrogant Bastard Ale for the first time! Hitting the Casino first though = )

 
Tis the season so I had a chance to try the limited edition Fra-Gee-Lay by Karbach Brewing Co. yesterday. Took me a second to realize that it's name came from A Christmas Story. It was a really good black ale. A little pricey though.

 
Tried possibly the best beer in existence to mankind at a beer tasting in Chicago last night. "Not Your Father's Root Beer" weighing in at an astonishing 10% ABV this beer is freaking amazing. I was seriously so blown away at how good they masked the ABV *AND* did a PERFECT Root beer taste! I don't even like Root beer! But this beer knocked me off of my feet. I immediately looked up places that pour it and came up with a nice link.

Yes, that is indeed a bottle of 2013 Dark Lord. I was in awe. I don't know where he got it, but holy shit. Now I just have to wait a year or two for it to age before I can drink it. ;)

It doesn't say on the bottle, but RateBeer says that 2010 - 2012 was 15%, so I imagine the 2013 is the same.

And I'm also going to try to get tickets this year. I hear it's a ton of fun. I tried to go to the brewery to buy some beer last year and it just happened to be Dark Lord Day. There was more traffic in Munster than I've ever seen, it was crazy. They had signs and cops everywhere trying to find places to fit all of the attendees. Hell, I saw one guy selling parking that was maybe a mile away from the brewery.
 
Been away for a while - been kinda busy! We added a new member to the family Christmas day! Our second little girl. We celebrated with an 07 N'Ice Chouffe winter special that was awesome. Had a Stone 17th anniv. gotterdammerung ipa which i think is awesome and they should add this as a reoccurring brew. The three year old and the newborn have kept us very busy but we are hoping to do some sort of stout (coffee,oatmeal) as our next homebrew.

Oh yeah, my wife got me a DFH ipa glass for xmas this year. Its really nice and a bit delicate on the bowl - feels a bit like a wine glass. Its sure to class up any brew though. Not sure it will replace my fav Sam Adams perfect pint. On a related note, I picked up a Unibroue tulip (of which I already had an older version but this one had etching!) at the thrift store then promptly dropped it in my living room when I got home and broke the foot...

*edit* Oh yeah - it's hopslam time - I doubt I'll get any again this year but it surely is good stuff!

A great, very hoppy, IPA.

I had a couple of editions of it last year and loved it.  It came to my town this go around too (saw post on the local beer store facebook that it and Hopslam were in yesterday), but was too busy to get their and try and get some.

Hmmm I can get my hands on some Big Foot. I would be very interested in trading for a Zombie Dust. I have easy access to all Odell stuff if you can't get that easily. Can get Friek if you like sours, Tree Shaker (though that might have lost some flavor since that came out last year in March). Also can get Pako's IPA from Snake River among other things.

As for me going to Denver this weekend and need to replenish my dwindling beer cellar.

Have the following waiting for me:

4pk of BCBBW (Bourbon County Brand Barley Wine for those of you that don't know what the abbreviation is, hell I still don't half of the ones I see on the Beer Advocate forums ;) )

Deschutes Abyss - Never had this before. Finally was able to procure one through a friend. Trading him a 4pk of Bourbon County Stout for it.

Perennial Abraxas - Had always wanted this one and it apparently disappeared off of shelves quickly in Denver. Glad I was able to score one.

Going to be shopping mainly for Sours & Stouts. Not quite back into IPA mode. I've been drinking nothing but Stouts and an occasional sour all winter lol. If anyone has a hard time getting Odell, I have easy access to it. :)

 
Had the Game of Thrones beer last week called "Take the Black Stout." Chocolate and caramel finish. I'm not a huge fan of stouts but it wasn't bad. Probably wont buy it again but I at least had to try it.
